"Stranger in a Foreign Land"

This is volume six in the Dino Learns German series of graded readers by André Klein. In this edition, Dino takes some time off from touring German cities to head home to Palermo, Italy where his brother is getting married. During the wedding, Dino pulls a drowning refugee from the sea, and gets involved in smuggling her to family. I said at the end of my review of the last book that I didn't see how his trip to Italy could match the experiences he had in Hamburg, simply because he would not be in Germany. But, I was wrong on that count! Like with Hamburg in book five, the reader's vocabulary has expanded to the point that the plot takes off, making the story a much more meaningful part of the experience of practicing reading in the German language.

My next read in the series will take me to Vienna, Austria. I hope to read the rest of this series in January and February. I read these books in Kindle and Audible, reading first from the e-text, then following along again with the audio for practicing my pronunciation. I recommend this series for German language learners of all ages. Learners will make much progress with the new vocabulary lists, questions, and answers provided following each chapter; while learning more about the culture of Europe by reading quality stories that match their own reading level.

I love this series. With this series, I feel I am reading more for enjoyment than just to improve my German. I think this may be my favorite book in the series so far. The vocabulary is getting more difficult, so the reading was a little slower. But the characters are wonderful, and the plot is engaging.

This installment of the Dino series finally starts to feel like an actual book with a plot. Some action, a bit of social commentary, some budding romance. All while keeping the vocabulary and grammar at a reasonably simple level.

The story took a weird, unexpected turn that really doesn't make a lot of sense. But it helps with learning more complex words and sentences. This series has been very helpful!

I just love learning German with Dino. I read them aloud and my husband has commented on how much more fluently I am reading now compared to when I started book 1 (Café in Berlin).

Thoughts and Notes on Plötzlich in Palermo...

“Curiosity is one of the permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect.”
~ Samuel Johnson, The Rambler

Recommended reading if you are curious to discover the culture and cuisine of northern Sicily, want to learn about the sights and sounds of Palermo, and improve your German effortlessly along the way.

By working with "building blocks" instead of just single words, learners can accelerate their understanding and active usage of new material and make the learning process more fluid and fun.

My German comprehension is improving. This is the Sixth book in the series. The way to improve is to read the chapter twice before looking at the vocabulary. Then read it a third time before answering the questions. I plan to reread the books again.
