As the fiercest Defense Agent at the THIRDS, Destructive Delta’s Ash Keeler is foul-mouthed and foul-tempered. But his hard-lined approach always yields results, evident by his recent infiltration of the Coalition. Thanks to Ash’s skills and the help of his team, they finally put an end to the murdering extremist group for good, though not before Ash takes a bullet to save teammate Cael Maddock. As a result, Ash’s secrets start to surface, and he can no longer ignore what’s in his heart.

Cael Maddock is no stranger to heartache. As a Recon Agent for Destructive Delta, he has successfully maneuvered through the urban jungle that is New York City, picking up his own scars along the way. Yet nothing he’s ever faced has been more of a challenge than the heart of Ash Keeler, his supposedly straight teammate. Being in love isn’t the only danger he and Ash face as wounds reopen and new secrets emerge, forcing them to question old loyalties.

Charlie Cochet, why did you do this to me?! Ash and Cael's story was supposed to be epic!!

I'm having a pity party over here, folks. I've been waiting on this story for the past few mediocre THIRDS books, and I was honestly expecting greatness. I've seen some glowing reviews, so I guess some people loved this one, but for me I think I'm being generous with my rating.

What really bothered me was Ash's lackluster and totally wimpy excuses as to why he wouldn't or couldn't be with Cael. It was just... lame. I've heard some excuses in my day but this just took the cake. Gimme something real, something that makes sense, because you guys have been pining after each other for YEARS!

Also, there is barely any sexual tension in this story. There are a lot of miscommunications and lots of missed opportunities, but sexual tension is just out the window. It was all so... boring.

And was I the only one who thought that Ash treated Cael like a little kid, or a little girl? He always calls him "blushing" or "sweet" or "cute". Cael felt very neutered for me. I didn't get the fire and passion between them, and the relationship dynamics felt very M/F romance in a bad way.

The plot... ugh. It is getting so muddled and confusing. Stop complicating the story, Charlie Cochet! This isn't Inception over here!

I think I need to tap out of the THIRDS world. When my favorite character isn't even the main focus of the book (love you Dex, my boo), I think it's time to move on to greener pastures. Though this book had some bright moments, I felt mostly irritated and let down when I finished.

Yeah... That's exactly how I'm feeling after finishing this.

I was so excited about this story. I feel like I waited so long to get it and in the end it left me feeling just so unsatisfied.

I have a feeling I am going to be very alone in this boat of unsatisfactory.

But for me it just all kind of came off as predictable and the humor seemed so cheesy to me. The relationship felt kind of rushed as did the story even though it was over 200 pages. I wasn't feeling the Ex-boyfriend thing and especially with him coming back all of a sudden once Cael is in a relationship. The ending was wrapped up so nice and clean and for some reason I wasn't expecting that. It frustrated me for some reason. And I am totally confused on why. But like I stated above, it felt unsatisfying.

There were some things I did enjoy though. I liked the sweet intimate moments with Ash and Cael. I do love them together.

I enjoyed reading about Sparks and learning more about her badassness. No that is not a word, but it should be. She reminds me of a Scarlett Johansen as Black Widow.

And of course I loved every second of Sloane and Dex being on the page.

I love this series and unfortunately not every book is going be as good as the last or the next. But I still enjoyed this one to some degree and am eager to read the next book in the series.

Got to admit....I'm a little disappointed with this one. Don't get me wrong I still liked it.

But I really felt like I was reading about a completely different Cael and Ash then what was portrayed in the previous books in the series.

I was always curious about what was holding Ash back, and I knew Cael would end up being a bit of a doormat, but I found myself a little bored with their romance.

I think my favorite parts of the book were the scenes with Dex and Sloane. I really never thought I would say that. Cael and Ash were my most anticipated couple. Maybe my expectations were too high?

Ash frustrated me with his fears and I thought he flipped really quickly. In the same scene he went from calling Cael his "teammate" to calling him his "boyfriend. It didn't fit.

Still I love the Thirds gang. We got some laugh out loud moments, some sweet moments, some steam, and a bit of suspense.

I look forward to getting in to Calvin and Hobbs' heads.

This is the first book in the series that was centered on a new couple, and it's one we've all been waiting for. Cael is Dex's brother and he's a cheetah-shifter. Here's something I didn't know, but was all over youtube to hear it: Cheetahs chirp. It's freaking adorable!!

Isn't that so cute? ... wait, what about their daddy issues?

Okay, the daddy issues might explain why Cael is into Ash, a lion-shifter who is a lot older than him. Ash is a grump ash-hole who is horrible to everyone but Cael. He also considers Cael adorable. Because, once again, Cael is adorable. I can't stress this enough.

Yes, this adorable.

So, here was the problem.... it was hard to see Cael as anything sexual. He was cute and bouncy and chirpy and you want to hug him. But, he seemed asexual because of it. And, Ash's relationship with him was very paternal or big-brotherish. It seemed weird for Cael to be the center of anything sexual. It would be like a panda porn. Have you ever heard of panda porn? No? That's because there is no such thing. It's wrong. Pandas even know it's wrong. That's why it's so damn hard to get them to procreate. They look at each other and think about how cute the other one is and want to cuddle it while saying "awww", not have sex. That's icky.

Except this guy. He's only got one thing on his mind. Pervert!

Other than that, I really liked the book. Cael is a character I want to adopt and smother mother with my love.

It's time for Cash' story! In this book we finally get to know these guys better and see others from their point of view.

Cael and Ash both have their own demons they have to battle. Ash cares for Cael and he wants to be with him, but he's afraid of letting people get close to his heart. Though the feelings they have for one another are already strong and Ash tries to get his stuff together, so they can make their relationship work.

"I think I might die of how adorable this is," Ash said. "This sort of cute should be illegal." He grinned at Cael and kissed the tip of his nose. "You should be illegal."
These two should be illegal. Cael, my beautiful and precious cinnamon roll, and Ash are too damn adorable together. They literally made me melt into a puddle of goo.

There were moments that made me grin and laugh, and there were also the ones that gripped my heart. I especially loved the family bonding scenes. I just adore how close Dex, Cael and Tony are.

I can't wait for Calvin and Hobbs' book! Hobbs is such a sweet guy and after what happened in this installment I wanted to wrap him in a protective blanket, give him a hug and punch his brother in the face.

Pre-ordered!

Now all I gotta do is wait... until August. *stares into the void*

This wasn’t what I expected for Ash & Cael’s story and you know how long I waited to read it but still enjoyable. I expected something more for them. Their relationship went so smoothly. And another thing that bothered me was that the main focus wasn’t on them it was scattered between others. The first half was more about Sloane & Dex (from Ash & Cael’s POV), don’t get me wrong, there is no complaint here, you know who is my fave but still it was unfair to Ash & Cael. The second half was mostly action part, so there was a little for their relationships. Now I’m wondering how the next book is going to be with a character who barely talk (or should I say never talk)! Told in multiple POV (mostly dual), 3rd person. It’s the fifth installment in the "THIRDS" series and has to be read in order. Overall, liked it and hope you'd enjoy it as well!

Reread September 2021

Ash still annoyed me in the beginning, but I love Cael and I'm still glad it all works out for him.

Reread May 2020

This one is still not my favorite but I enjoyed it more this time. I still don’t get some of Ash’s reluctance but he didn’t grate on my nerves as bad. Go figure 🤷‍♀️

Reread June 2019

Ash didn't annoy me as much this time around...go figure. I still didn't buy why he kept pushing Cael away. I wish it would have been explained better or more on page time to figuring it out because then all of sudden he's "okay". I didn't buy it.

So this one was probably my least favorite so far. I was really looking forward to Ash & Cael's story. This is just a me thing, but I had a hard time buying Ash's reluctance to be with Cael. He obviously was attracted to guys when he was younger but I just didn't get what happened to his brother was the cause of him "not being gay". I absolutely hated that he kept pushing Cael away and hurting him. Cael is so sweet and he deserves to get a HEA and be treated special by the right guy. I wanted to punch Ash so many times. When he does get his head out of his ass I did like their relationship it just didn't "WOW" me.

All the stuff near the end was exciting and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next with the team. I'm keeping my fingers crossed Hobbs & Calvin are going to give me what I missed here.

3,5 rounded up

It pains me to admit this was my least favorite in the series. I had such high hopes for this one. I've been dying to get to Cael and Ash's story. I absolutely loved them in all the other books, but here I didn't get what I expected. I wanted to smack Ash so many times! I felt like this dragged too much. There were SO many unnecessary scenes and Cael was super patient! I know I couldn't be this patient.

We already know about Ash's sad past from the previous books. So here we don't get much more. I didn't like his POV. He just didn't let Cael in.

Thank God Dex comes along and makes me laugh so much, again! Actually he and Sloane were present most of the book so I think I got to enjoy it because of them.

We get a lot of drama, from Cael's past and also from Ash's. They are hot together but there wasn't much tension and I have to admit some scenes were too sugary sweet for my taste. I just wanted a little more. A little more tension, more surprises on the way. They kind of fell into place too easily.

I'm rounding up because the last chapters kept me glued to the pages. We get again suspense and many unexpected turns. I loved how Sloane kept his ground and defended their team in front of a very scary Sparks.

I love this series and I adore how it still surprises me.

5+++++ for the Audio-book.

Mark Westfield's voice was made for these books. I love how he has been consistent with the voices from book 1. You can easily tell who is who.

I have loved Ash and Cael from book 1. They had chemistry from the get-go. BUT their book was a disappointment. Going in i expected to be blown away but sad to say i was not.

description

Ash- the Lion Therian, was just off. His character turned into this "i can't be with him because of my past". At some point i wanted to smack him in the head to wake the fuck up.

Cael- my sweet adorable Cheetah was like some damsel in distress all the time.

description

Despite all that, i still enjoyed the sweet moments between the two. The cuddling, the talks, the banter and Cael talking to Ash about tech stuff. My heart broke for Cael about his past relationship and Ash too and his family situation.

Sparks, i love me a bad ass female boss, she is the best. And the team dynamic is great as usual.

Now what i loved the most is Dex and his shenanigans.. He had me laughing all through.

I hope Hobbs and Calvin's book is much better.

And can we please get Austen's book in the near future.

Overall it was just ok. I wanted more for Ash and Cael.

Against the Grain is the fifth book in Charlie Cochet’s THIRDS series. I’m a huge fan of this series. It’s addictive and I love the characters and enjoy seeing what they get up to, both good and bad.

Against the Grain is a little different than the first four books. This time, we get Ash and Cael as our MCs instead of Dex and Sloane. Honestly, it was so good to get these two at last. It feels like it’s taken forever for them to get to their own book. This series is one of my favorites. It’s got extremely likable characters, laugh out loud moments, great story lines and enough sexy times to keep you happy.

This book picks up where Rise & Fall left off, only it switches POV. The opening scene is funny, but then it turns very fast and we lean some things about Cael and the Maddock/Daley family that we didn’t know before. I wanted to hug Cael when Tony was telling Ash about Cael’s past.

 photo tumblr_m400fc21VL1qkc12fo1_500_zpsdc7a61b5.gif

Things between Ash and Cael are better than they were in the last two books, but there are still issues. Ash is still fighting his demons and it’s causing problems between him and Cael because of his fears. But Ash is determined to get past them so he and Cael can finally be together.

We get to see a different side of Ash here. A side we got a tiny glimpse of in Rise & Fall. It was hard to not love him when you find out everything he’s been through and how much he suffered. His relationship with Cael brings out his softer side. But there are times, even when Cael isn’t there, when you see a gentler side to him. And of course, you get to see the relationship with Dex through Ash’s eyes.

“Hey Ash.”
Ash turned, studying Dex and the wide smile on his face. He braced himself.
“You hugged me.”
Ash held back a smile. “Don’t let it go to your head. It was a momentary lapse of judgement.”

Cael and Ash are so great together! The two of them are really sweet and cute together. Their relationship has grown a lot since the beginning of the series and it’s so good to see them happy at last. They supported each other a lot through this book and while they still had their ups and downs, everything really worked out well.

We get some really nice family moments in this book. Family moments that managed to break my heart and make me smile. The dark times in the Maddock/Daley house were brought up here and it really showed a new side to Dex and Cael’s relationship and Tony’s relationship with his boys. I love the close relationship Dex and Cael have and I loved it even more in Against the Grain, because there was pain here, a lot of pain.

God, Cael had been such a despicable jerk to Dex. They had so many arguments. One in particular stood out among the rest. His hurtful words to his brother echoed in his head. He’d never forget them. You’ll never understand me. You’re Human, and what’s more, you’re not even my real brother.

I love seeing the team together and hearing about their personal lives. Poor Hobbs went through a lot during this book. I had the urge to climb into the book and hug him tight and make it all better. All because of Rafe, who I wanted to strangle. What he did made me so angry! And I’m not sure if I’ll be able to like him after what happened in this book.

 photo tumblr_mtgsn7kFxm1rryxomo1_400_zps17cd15a1.gif

I can’t wait for the next book! Calvin and Hobbs are up next and after this book, I really can’t wait for them to get their own book. It’s going to be interesting to see everyone through their eyes.

A copy of this book was provided by Dreamspinner Press in exchange for a fair and honest review.

DNF at 67%, and a good chunk of that was me skimming over the unnecessary filler.

Really, I have no one to blame but myself. Rise & Fall was barely 3 stars for me, and after reading a few of the lower-rated reviews for this book, I had a feeling that Against the Grain wouldn't be much better. But I had pre-ordered it, so I thought I might as well give it a try. I was disappointed, to say the least.

I was really looking forward to Ash and Cael's book, but this definitely wasn't what I'd expected. Ash and Cael were barely the same two characters that I'd read so far in this series. Cael went from a spunky tech-whiz to a blushing ninny, and Ash from a total badass to a whiny jerk. Granted, Ash was already a jerk, but I couldn't take the woe-is-me routine.

And that ridiculous reason for Ash not wanting to give in to his feelings for Cael. "I don't want you, because I want you so much that I'm scared I'll mess up because of how much I want you."
description

The action wasn't much better than the romance. The plot arc for this series has gone from entertaining to very convoluted. I skipped to the end to see how things played out, and I wasn't impressed.

I'm also not a fan of Cochet's tendency towards using repetition or unnecessary side stories to fill in the pages. There were only so many times that I could read the same conversations over and over again, but just with different characters. And all of those stories about Dex when he was younger went from funny to annoying. I'd say that up until the point I read, that filler accounted for about a third of the book.

The THIRDS series is OTT galore. That silliness was entertaining for the first few of books, but it's gotten old at this point. From what I read on her website, the author has six more books planned. I think I'm tapping out.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Can Contain Spoilers*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

My luck ran out. Book number five centers around Dex's adopted brother and a cheetah Therian, THIRDS Destructive Delta Agent Tech Expert, Cael Maddock (27?) and Sloane's best friend, Ash Keeler (37? 38? 39?), a lion Therian and Destructive Delta's entry tactics and CQC expert. I had kinda hoped every book would be centering around Dex and Sloane as I feel like their story isn't complete, but I was certain I wouldn't get my wish, and right I was. However, from what I gathered, this one (#5) will be the only book centering around the lion and cheetah, while the next one (#6) will center around a certain tiger and human, and then it will go back to Dex and Sloane. So I just have to get through these two first. Man, I have to say; I suck at loving characters who has been side characters first. Rarely do I love them more than the first couple we met.
Ash stood silently beside Sloane in the back end of Dekatria while Maddock glared at them, his nostrils flaring and the old beat-up baseball bat in his hand. How many others had come up against—what had Cael called it? That’s right, Old Betsy. How many potential boyfriends had seen the rough side of Old Betsy? And now here he was, his every instinct telling him to flee. It was hardly the first time they’d seen their sergeant pissed off, but this was a whole other level of pissed.
This was stupid. Ash was a top agent for the THIRDS with twenty years of experience, skilled in entry tactics and close-quarters combat. He could handle one Human officer holding a baseball bat.
“Which one of you heartthrobs wants to go first?” Maddock growled.
Ash didn’t hesitate. “Sloane.”
“Wow.” Sloane shook his head at him in disbelief. “Way to throw me under the bus, buddy.”

Take for example Trey and Taryn from Feral Sins ; they became one of my favorite characters and couple of all time and I adored Dante as a side character in book one. However, as the series changes couple each book, I struggled - fine, it was a battle lost - with liking Dante when he became the center. I ended up hating the book and stopped reading the series. I pretend like book one's the only one published, it seems. Same with for example Guild Hunter . So therefore, I tried, going into this one with an open mind. The trick, I think, is to make yourself believe that this is book one instead of book five and you just meet them and no one else... It didn't work. Not fully.
He’d never admit it, but he counted Dex among his family. Sort of like the annoying brother-in-law. You’re happy he’s making your bro happy, but damn, sometimes you just wanted to punch him in his stupid smiley face. Who the hell smiled that much, anyway? A crazy person, that’s who.

The story begins right where book four ended. Just a switch of POV. The book wasn't bad, not really. It was wonderful to see Dex and Sloane through Ash and Cael's eyes. I also adored seeing Ash and Dex becoming sort of friends. I loved seeing Ash and Sloane, you really see how close they are towards one another. After all they've been through, so it's not surprising. It was also good to see the Daley-Maddock family act like a family, a really close one. As the team are on the leave because the needed healing time, we didn't get to see a whole lot of action - not until the end, but that was okay, because we got a chance to get even closer to the team, specially Dex, Sloan, Ash and Cael together. We even got a chance to see Tony in a more parental light. I liked that.
Ash’s gaze went to Dex’s bandaged arm. “Didn’t realize things were that serious between you two.”
Dex followed Ash’s gaze to his arm before moving on to Sloane. “Surprised the hell out of me too. I think that last mission was rough on everyone. Put things into perspective for all of us. One minute I was thinking he might never feel the same way I did, next thing I know he’s telling me he loves me and that we should move in together.” He brushed Sloane’s hair away from his face and stroked his cheek. “It’s scary, isn’t it?”
“What’s that?”
“How one person can become your whole world. One day you’re going about your business, and next thing you know, you’re handing someone all your trust, your love, your heart, everything you are. You’re just handing it over and hoping for the best.”
“Hope for the best, prepare for the worst,” Ash said quietly. It’s what he and Sloane had always done. They’d embraced it. Now things were different for the both of them. Ash never would have seen this coming, at least not for himself. Sloane had always wanted someone to love him for who he was. Despite of what he was. Ash remembered his best friend confessing as much.

I also liked that it didn't feel like Ash and Cael tried to take over Dex and Sloane as a ... power couple as Suzanne Wright did with the couple in book one and the new couple in book two. They had suddenly switched places. It felt like the new couple was the same, just a change of name. So credits to Charlie Cochet for doing a good job with keeping the leader the leader and the second in command the second in command. It's important for me that everything doesn't change to make a new couple look better. Overall, it wasn't a bad read, but I'd like to go back to Dex and Sloane's POV. But it was nice to get a conclusion for Ash and Cael as we all know where this was going with them. Same with the next couple. Though I had to admit that Hobbs interest me a bit... so on to the next one!
“You bonded?” Cael couldn’t believe it. His brother had been marked as a Therian mate.
“You what?”
Cael and Dex both gave a start. They spun to face their dad, and Dex hid his arm behind his back.
“Dad, hey. Sloane and I had a bonding moment. You know, heart-to-heart.”
Their dad’s laser-beam stare bore into them. “Boy, you must think I was born yesterday.”
Dex shook his head. “No, not at all. I think you were born way back when. What were the dinosaurs like?”
“You’re looking for a grounding.”
Cael held back a laugh at Dex’s scandalized expression.
“You can’t ground me!”
“Try me.”

Other Characters:
Dexter ‘Dex’ ‘Rookie’ Justice Daley (35) Defense Agent for Destructive Delta (used to be a homicide detective; the Human Police Force) and his Team Leader Sloane Brodie (37? 38? 39?), who's also his jaguar Therian partner and lover. Dex is Cael's adopted big brother and Ash is Sloane's best friend.
Isaac Pearce, a Homicide Detective. His brother, Gabe, who had been a THIRDS agent and died a year ago; had been killed by a Therian informant. Though that proved to be a lie; Isaac had killed his own brother. Gabe used to be Sloane human partner. Sloane and Gabe were sleeping together. A year before Gabe died, it had gotten pretty serious. They’d been together four years. Got killed in book two.
Anthony ‘Tony’ ‘Sarge’ ‘Sergeant’ ‘Sir’ Maddock, Dex's adoptive father and a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron (Destructive Delta) otherwise known as the THIRDS.
→ Cael's human partner, Recon agent Rosa Santiago, Destructive Delta's crisis negotiator and medic.

Rafe (the oldest brother), Team Leader for Alpha Ambush and Tiger Therian and Sebastian ‘Seb’ (middle brother), Agent for Theta Destructive newly promoted to Team Leader for Theta Destructive. Was once on Destructive Delta but was transferred after his relationship to Hudson ended in a breach of protocol and civilian loss. Is a Tiger Therian. Both Hobbs’s big brothers.

Bradley Darcy, bartender and owner of Bar Dekatria and Jaguar Therian.
Austen Payne (23? 24?), Squadron Specialist Agent (SSA) for Destructive Delta and a Cheetah Therian.
Angel Reyes, Member of the Order. Former member of the gang Westward Creed.
→ Dr. Abraham Shultzon, was the head doctor during the First Gen Recruitment Program who was personally responsible for the wellbeing of the THIRDS’ First Gen Recruits. He was also responsible for the tests that were run on the Therian children.
Arlo Keeler, Ash’s twin brother killed during the riots in the 1980s.
Beck Hogan, a Tiger Therian and leader of The Coalition.
Drew Collins, a Cougar Therian and a part of The Coalition; Hogan's new second-in-command.
Felipe Bautista, Drew Collins’s boyfriend of ten years and a wolf Therian.
Cael couldn’t help the big dopey grin that came onto his face, his cheeks feeling hot. “We’re officially dating.”
Dex gaped at him. “Shut the front door!”
“I can’t. My dorky brother broke it,” Cael said, giving him a push. His excitement bubbled up, and he grabbed his brother’s arm. “Can you believe it?” He bounced in his seat, and Dex grabbed Cael’s arm, bouncing along with him.
“I’m so happy for you!”
“Oh my God, we’re like teenage girls!” Cael squealed, still bouncing.
“I don’t care! Oh my God, Ash is your boyfriend. That’s… I can’t even. I don’t… I’m….” The sliding glass door to the balcony slid open, and Dex stopped bouncing. “Play it cool. They’re coming back in.”

*** 3,5 not what I hoped for stars ***

Rating 3 stars, and extra half star for old times sake and the story picked up towards the end.

Okay, so where to start.

First, I hoped for more with this book. I mean, it's Cael and Ash! I've been waiting for ever to get their story. What I got was not what I had hoped for.

There was literally no relationship build up in this one. No UST (Unresolved Sexual Tension). In the previous book Cael and Ash kissed, so that removes the excitement of a first-kiss-scene and a build up to it. Cael also told Ash he loves him, and Ash told Cael he has feelings for him. But, this was in the previous book! So there's no excitement and giddiness to see if they when or how the come together. There was just waiting around for Ash to get his head out of his ass. He has demons from his past he is dealing with and that has been his reasons for not getting close to Cael in all the years they've worked together. How long has that been? Ten years? Ash has everything within grasp, a great and sweet guy who has offered his heart on a plate to Ash. And Ash still holds back, because of his issues. And I have to say I don't really understand what his big problem is. They are never really addressed either. Ash goes from retreating from any form of affection from Cael to being his boyfriend in a hurry. What changed his mind was a asshole and abusive ex-boyfriend showing up and smacking Cael around. Of course this brings out Ash more protective side and suddenly wants to be Cael's boyfriend, because he wants to be with Cael and love him and protect him. Ehm... what? What about working through it? It was like flipping a switch with Ash. And Ash has had feelings for Cael in all the years they worked together, not to mention all the scenes in the previous books where Ash could have had a change of mind, he had to be prompted with a to get his head out of his ass. It did not sit well with me, I'm sad to say. I had higher hopes for Ash and Cael. They deserved a better romantic development than this. I wished for more, more, MORE! *sniff* And I had to wait four books and get this?

I'm hesitant to say this, but I feel the whole PR package around the THIRDS series is actually better than the last two books to get published. I started to feel this with #4 and I still feel it with #5. I feel the series has become too hyped up. I still love the series, the world build and the characters, but the danger of hyping up a series this much also makes the expectations go way up. It's fabulous when expectations are met, but all the more disappointing when they are not. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. I also think with a hyped up series it's easier to either be very excited or bummed out, than a standalone, if you know what I mean. There's a difference of seeing a book in a series as a book of it's own and an extension of the series. And I believe the ratings for this book reflects that. The wow for the series gets included in each book. I don't think this book (as a book of it's own and not as of a series) is not that good, it lack build up of Ash and Cael's relationship, which I had been looking forward to for four books. Ash's issues were not dealt with at all, he just decided he didn't have them anymore and wanted to be with Cael. Why didn't you do that years ago, eh? Or earlier in the series? Cael deserves a medal for putting up with Ash's asshole-ness, because, man, he says and do some stupid shit sometimes.

All that being said, I did not hate the book. It was just frustrating to read, especially the first half. But there were some great, sweet and funny moments (mostly because of Dex). The story plot, which picks up the tale of why Sloane had his uncontrolled shift in the last book, is explored in the last half of the book. So the book got more interesting towards the end. In addition, I admit I got a bit choked on the book. The book and I got off to a bad start, and it might have clouded my judgment of it. But hey, I'm supposed to enjoy reading a book I've been looking forward to, aren't I? Well I did, and I did not. I wished the story of Ash and Cael to have been better. *pouts*

I recommend you read this book for yourself. And please tell me what you think.

Check out my updates, they show off my up and down feelings reading this book.

I've been excited to read Ash & Cael's story for several books now & this did not disapoint. I just love how we saw a grumpy Ash in the past several books and now we see his secret soft sweet side.
The case they worked in this book has been my favorite of the series and was such a good set up for future books.
Excited for Calvin & Hobbs now!

Okay Charlie, you had me for a microsecond there. It was good egg on my face, because I was ready to flip the crap out. You could have not done better IMO for Ash & Cael to me. I liked the pace that they took. I'm so happy it was not instant for them to get together. Thank you for kinda giving us strictly contemporary at this point. I know it's PNR, but I was kinda tired from the first few books and I kept forgetting things. LOL. I liked the refresher on terms at the beginning as well. Good job with that. I actually liked the story alot. I saw some familiar faces, and new people. I would like to see Ash and his mom in the future. I thought that was good. YESSSS, the holiday scenes were hilarious. I think I swooned with Ash & Cael at that point.

Everyone knows I love me some Sloane, but I would throw him under any bus I can find for some Hobbs. OMG, my heart was breaking for him. I swear to goodness I need his story NOW. I love him alot, and to see Ash being a great friend changed my view point on him alot as well.

A couple of things I felt like we could have done without. Some people were introduced in the beginning and I didn't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out why. Glad he got his butt handed to him, but I would love to have seen Daddy Maddox throw down big time. I also enjoyed Rosa & Letty in this, these are two women who I don't mind in my mm stories. I can't wait for more of this series. Can't give away the plot, but I thoroughly enjoyed this from beginning to end. P.S, Charlie please send Hobbs my way Thanks!

It’s been a long time coming getting Ash and Cael together, and though not as epic as I would’ve liked, this still had its sweet and poignant moments. As always, for me the happy ending that we get for these two is what ultimately counts.

Of course I loved seeing gruff, grumpy Ash fall hard and show his softer, vulnerable side. In turn, Cael is just one of the best guys ever. He has infinite patience and is devout in his love and utter trust with the reluctant Ash. Though I missed Dex and Sloane quite a bit, it was a very nice look at them from other people’s perspectives.

As this focuses on Ash and Cael, and how they reconcile their problems in and amongst the craziness that is their and Destructive Delta’s lives, the action and fun factor did not fall short. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - I love the evolution of this series and the entire cast of characters. Each story builds upon itself and makes the experience richer and more entertaining, as well as more meaningful. There’s a new challenge for our team which seems like a complete game changer. I look forward to what the future brings!!

Reread/Relisten: June 2023

um yeah same as last time, i don't think this book lived up to the hype that Cael and Ash are given in the series... this just makes me appreciate Dex and Sloane's books more haha hopefully Calvin and Hobbs' book is better than i remember haha.

2.5-3 stars November 2021

I had such high expectations going in to this book, Cael and Ash they were suppose to be awesome but for me they didn’t live up to the hype that was surrounding them.

Ash was doing a lot of the push/pull thing and was very hot and cold to Cael, and Ash even knew what Fuller did to Cael and did that anyways…

But then out of the blue Ash was okay with being in a relationship, maybe I missed that lead up but it didn’t flow as well as Dex and Sloane relationship… I mean we got hints of Ash and Cael in the previous 4 books but for some reason it didn’t flow and didn’t feel like their characters…

Oh well I hope that Calvin and Hobbs book is better because I am rooting for them and can’t wait to see inside Hobbs’s head!

-----------------------------------------

I liked this more than I expected. A lot of my friends were disappointed in this book, so my expectations were very low. And I think that helped.

I got why some people would be disappointed in Cael and Ash’s story, because yes, this could have been better, but I was still happy with the way things turned out.

I expected lots of angst, since everyone was complaining about Ash getting his head out of his ass, but the relationship angst happened in the previous books, it wasn't too bad in this book. Yes, Ash was very hesitant in the first half, but he did make it up to Cael in the second half.

Ash has issues, but he tells Cael he wants to work on them and asks if they could take it slow. So they do. And I had no problem with that. They were cute together and despite there not being a lot of sexy times, when they did get together they were hot!

Cael was just adorable in this, and even Ash was not his asshole self with the way he was just melting every time Cael was near.

And even though the funny times were missing in this, I like where Charlie Cochet is taking this series.

First off I just want to say how much I absolutely LOVE the whole THIRDS series! Second, Ash Keeler drives me nuts and Cael Maddox is the epitome of "sweetheart". Third, I did miss Dex and Sloane not being at the heart of this installment. Finally, as much as I missed Dex and Sloane being front and center, I loved seeing inside the gruff exterior of Ash and it's always a pleasure to see more of Cael.

When I first started Against I thought "what am I going to do without Dex's crazy love of everything 80s and Sloane's closeted nerdiness?" Well, by the time I was a chapter in I realized that not only were Dex and Sloane still there but that there was more to Ash than we were led to believe. I won't give any more details about the story but I will say that getting to see into the hearts and mind of other members of Destructive Delta was a pleasant surprise and lovely treat. Learning more of Ash's history doesn't soften his gruffness or increase his tolerance for Dex's antics but it does make me love him nearly as much as I love Dex, Sloane, and Cael. As for Cael, there really isn't much I can say because he's just as adorable now as he was the first time we met him Hell and High Water.

All in all, Against the Grain is a brilliant addition to the THIRDS universe. Even though a different couple is the focus of the story it furthers the ongoing journey of Delta and should be read in order. *Rushing off to read #6*

Reread April 2025

I think the problem with this book is that Cael and Ash have already gone through the pull and push (or rather Ash's reluctance to sign up for 'more') of their romance in the previous four books. All that's left is for Ash's to grow some balls and commit. Which, of course, happens. And pretty easily, too.
So there is very little emotional angst and relationship development, leaving us with cute domestic scenes, humorous family celebrations and, as I said in my original review, a lot of the same on the action side of the plot.
While it was nice to see that Ash does have a soft side, I found all the sweet things he's uttering to Cael rather too much, and not quite fitting in with his character.

Saying that, this was enjoyable enough, and I will continue my quest to finally go through the whole series!

original review

I have to agree with many other readers: this instalment was a bit ... much of the same.

I had hoped for some more earth shattering developments, particularly for Ash and Cael.
Instead I felt like watching a bunch of puppies, a lot of the time.
Nothing wrong with that of course (it did make me smile), but it neither made me really understand what Ash’s problem was, nor did it do anything to cover up the somewhat mediocre plot.

I also felt that the sweet-talking, pie baking Ash was simply not the same guy I knew at all. Not that I mind either in a guy, but this was so OTT I was near getting the sugar shakes.

So... half way in the series, and time for a break! But despite this one, I will be back!!!

I really did my best to get in the zone with this one but it’s not just for me. I ignored Ash’s asshatery towards Cael since he came around eventually but the story just didn’t click for me. Reading Austen’s POV was such a distraction and the whole Therian Intelligence Network (TIN) just made the whole thing a hot mess. The out made for Sparks was just all too convenient – and….

I loved that we still have a lot of Dex-time here who totally saved this read for me. I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed the first four books but I will definitely continue to support the next books in the series.

Okay let’s say I’m a wee bit disappointed with this one. I mean, I was freaking excited for Ash’s and Cael’s romance since book one. Buuuut somehow, maybe because we saw so much of them and their beginning love story in the previous books already , it feels like it had already reached its peak and we now only got what came after - like how they settle in and get comfortable with each other.

Of course I still loved getting into their POV for a change and they were sweet as pie but somehow I was expecting a bit more thrill from their romance. And let’s be honest here, I was also hoping for a bit of wild cat cuddling for some reason *shrug.

[fyi: Ash (a lion Therian) is Sloane’s best friend and Cael (a cheetah Therian) is Dex’s little brother and they all work together as THIRD agents in one team with Sloane as their team leader. Maddock (a human and Dex’s and Cael’s adoptive father) is their sergeant]

The ongoing story however was captivating as ever and I can’t wait to see where this is headed in the next book - which is again, from another couple’s POV.

Adorei, teve momentos tensos, tristes, engraçados, românticos e quentes. Espero que Calvin e Hobbs tbm tenham um livro com pov deles. É bom quando vc entende os pensamentos direto dos personagens. BR with Sandi! Ash and Cael, Ash and Cael!! Hell yeah! I was so excited for this one and it didn't fall below my expectations!

How can a big, manly, lion Therian be afraid to fall in love? Well, enter Ash and hear his story from his childhood and you will understand. But who better to melt his heart than sweet and adorable Cael. One of the best parts is that Cael is Dex's brother and Dex and Ash are like oil and water.

What happens when two characters like Ash and Cael have pent up sexual frustration that has built up over four books? Fireworks! Oh how I wish I was there when they first got together....you know, just to watch and observe :)

I loved the evolving relationship between Ash and Cael. I also loved the dynamic between Ash and Dex. I know they give each other a hard time, but I think they respect and care for one another deep down. And how could they not? Sloane is Ash's best friend and Dex makes him incredibly happy. Cael is Dex's brother and he is never happier then when he's with Ash.

Not only was it fun to read about Ash and Cael, but there was also a great deal of excitement in trying to figure out who to believe regarding the THIRDS agents. I love Austen by the way!

Plus, I want to give Hobbs a huge hug. I can't wait to read more about him and Calvin.

Alas, back to the waiting game. Love, love, love this series! I'm going to be so upset when it's over. Until then, I can't wait for the next one!

Can I tell you how excited I was to finally get Ash and Cael’s story? VERY EXCITED! There may have been some squeals heard when I got this book. Maybe. Though I’ll deny it actually happening if anyone asks.

I’ve been waiting for their story ever since Hell & High Water.

Picking up immediately where Rise & Fall left off Against the Grain starts off humorous with Tony confronting Sloane and Ash as to their intentions. As quickly as the humor comes so does the action, adventure, sexy times, and all sorts of secrets about Cael and about the THIRDS…

Between all of the covert craziness we’re treated to the nail biting will-they-won’t-they yo-yo back and forth of Ash’s inner struggle wanting to be with Cael, being in love with him, and yet constantly pushing him away…I’ll admit I was totally frustrated.

He was afraid they’d hurt him. Cael had his heart. There was no denying it. Ash had presented Cael with the most vulnerable part of him. Was he overthinking their relationship? Next to Sloane, Cael had been his closest friend. Their relationship had changed, but their friendship was still there. The only difference now was that he could act on all those desires that had secretly consumed him for so long.
“You’re so beautiful,” he said quietly, reaching out, then pulling back. He shouldn’t start something he couldn’t finish. It wouldn’t be fair to either of them.
Fucking hell. Everything he’d ever wanted was right in front of him. All he had to do was reach out…

Of course, knowing they had to end up together, I persevered!

This is really hard to review, because I would have to spoiler much of the story, and I don’t want to do that here. I know, I know! Try to contain your absolute shock and incredulity that I am opting to not spoil the story.

Yeah, you’re right – who am I kidding? Click on the spoiler here to get the low-down on spy-town…or not, you know, if you want to be all pleasantly surprised and stuff.

Once again it’s Charlie Cochet’s fabulous use of humor that makes this series so thoroughly enjoyable for me.

Full of humor, action, suspense, and sexy times - fans of the series won’t be disappointed with this installment. RECOMMENDED!

Side note: I can hardly wait to get this on audio so I may enjoy Mark Westfield’s performance.

Oh man, I dunno why I took such a long break with these books. Probably in part because of reviews I read for this, which didn't always favor it, and the fact that Dex and Sloane weren't the main couple of this one.

But I needn't have worried. I love this world, I love the characters, their relationships, and even though Dex and Sloane, who are still my faves in this series, aren't the main focus, they're still heavily featured of course, and that made me happy.

This is Ash and Cael's story, who were kind of already built up before this book, which made it different than the first four (and made it probably the only book these two will get focusing on them, which is okay. I really liked these two together but they don't make me as happy as Dex and Sloane).

But this book was mainly about getting these two together, and making revelations about things we didn't even know needed to be revealed. But it cleared up a lot of questions (even as it created more, which is what the rest of the series is about, I'm sure) and it made for excited reading, especially at the end.

I gave off half a star only because Ash and Cael didn't quite live up to Dex and Sloane's standards - but I think most of it is because most of their love story happened before the series started/in the first four books as side characters - because we didn't get a close look at their relationship from the beginning, them together didn't pack as much as a punch as Dex and Sloane together.

But, these two were hot together, and also incredibly sweet. I love how mushy asshole Ash is able to get around Cael, and just how adorable - but also badass - Cael is. I feel the same as Ash (and everyone else) in just wanting to protect the guy. I "aww"ed at several parts between these two, and I loved Ash calling Cael sweetheart. Their love is very strong, and it does come across throughout the book, I was just saying I didn't feel it as much as Dex and Sloane, is all.

Also, I thought this would mostly be filler, only focusing on Ash and Cael really while the team was off from work, but it did have plot, even if it wasn't as dangerous as it has been in the past four books (although, at the end, it gets pretty damn close. There's plenty of danger then) and I also understand why it focused so heavily on Ash and Cael, as this is their (one and only, I assume) book and it had to get them to that HEA place, or if they will be the focus of a later book, then HFN. But I choose to take it as a HEA, because this feels like they got their HEA and will go back to being side characters - but still important - in books after it.

I do also think that Ash kinda got to a place where he could be with Cael a tad easily. Like for half this book he's still not quite there, but then he just kind of...is. I mean, an event happens to for him to come to that conclusion, but it still didn't feel quite earned. I really wanted Ash to have been seeing a therapist, but that didn't happen. Which made the event of these getting together feel not quite right, because all of Ash's reservations from before seemed to silly then, with how easy he was able to let them go when they had been what had been stopping these two from getting together before for so long.

But I still enjoyed the events regardless, and seeing these two so happy - especially Cael, who I love - together.

Of course this also was pretty hilarious at times as the past four books have been, mainly because Dex was present (lol I love Dex so so muchhhh) and also, I loved how insatiable Dex and Sloane are for each other lol. Like, they weren't even the main focus but their inability to not fuck on the regular was emphasized in this book and it made me laugh so much (and made me giddy).

Overall, a solid 5th installment to this lovely series. Can't wait to read more :D
