"I think I might die of how adorable this is," Ash said. "This sort of cute should be illegal." He grinned at Cael and kissed the tip of his nose. "You should be illegal."These two should be illegal. Cael, my beautiful and precious cinnamon roll, and Ash are too damn adorable together. They literally made me melt into a puddle of goo.

“Hey Ash.”
Ash turned, studying Dex and the wide smile on his face. He braced himself.
“You hugged me.”
Ash held back a smile. “Don’t let it go to your head. It was a momentary lapse of judgement.”
God, Cael had been such a despicable jerk to Dex. They had so many arguments. One in particular stood out among the rest. His hurtful words to his brother echoed in his head. He’d never forget them. You’ll never understand me. You’re Human, and what’s more, you’re not even my real brother.

Ash stood silently beside Sloane in the back end of Dekatria while Maddock glared at them, his nostrils flaring and the old beat-up baseball bat in his hand. How many others had come up against—what had Cael called it? That’s right, Old Betsy. How many potential boyfriends had seen the rough side of Old Betsy? And now here he was, his every instinct telling him to flee. It was hardly the first time they’d seen their sergeant pissed off, but this was a whole other level of pissed.
This was stupid. Ash was a top agent for the THIRDS with twenty years of experience, skilled in entry tactics and close-quarters combat. He could handle one Human officer holding a baseball bat.
“Which one of you heartthrobs wants to go first?” Maddock growled.
Ash didn’t hesitate. “Sloane.”
“Wow.” Sloane shook his head at him in disbelief. “Way to throw me under the bus, buddy.”
He’d never admit it, but he counted Dex among his family. Sort of like the annoying brother-in-law. You’re happy he’s making your bro happy, but damn, sometimes you just wanted to punch him in his stupid smiley face. Who the hell smiled that much, anyway? A crazy person, that’s who.
Ash’s gaze went to Dex’s bandaged arm. “Didn’t realize things were that serious between you two.”
Dex followed Ash’s gaze to his arm before moving on to Sloane. “Surprised the hell out of me too. I think that last mission was rough on everyone. Put things into perspective for all of us. One minute I was thinking he might never feel the same way I did, next thing I know he’s telling me he loves me and that we should move in together.” He brushed Sloane’s hair away from his face and stroked his cheek. “It’s scary, isn’t it?”
“What’s that?”
“How one person can become your whole world. One day you’re going about your business, and next thing you know, you’re handing someone all your trust, your love, your heart, everything you are. You’re just handing it over and hoping for the best.”
“Hope for the best, prepare for the worst,” Ash said quietly. It’s what he and Sloane had always done. They’d embraced it. Now things were different for the both of them. Ash never would have seen this coming, at least not for himself. Sloane had always wanted someone to love him for who he was. Despite of what he was. Ash remembered his best friend confessing as much.
“You bonded?” Cael couldn’t believe it. His brother had been marked as a Therian mate.
“You what?”
Cael and Dex both gave a start. They spun to face their dad, and Dex hid his arm behind his back.
“Dad, hey. Sloane and I had a bonding moment. You know, heart-to-heart.”
Their dad’s laser-beam stare bore into them. “Boy, you must think I was born yesterday.”
Dex shook his head. “No, not at all. I think you were born way back when. What were the dinosaurs like?”
“You’re looking for a grounding.”
Cael held back a laugh at Dex’s scandalized expression.
“You can’t ground me!”
“Try me.”
Cael couldn’t help the big dopey grin that came onto his face, his cheeks feeling hot. “We’re officially dating.”
Dex gaped at him. “Shut the front door!”
“I can’t. My dorky brother broke it,” Cael said, giving him a push. His excitement bubbled up, and he grabbed his brother’s arm. “Can you believe it?” He bounced in his seat, and Dex grabbed Cael’s arm, bouncing along with him.
“I’m so happy for you!”
“Oh my God, we’re like teenage girls!” Cael squealed, still bouncing.
“I don’t care! Oh my God, Ash is your boyfriend. That’s… I can’t even. I don’t… I’m….” The sliding glass door to the balcony slid open, and Dex stopped bouncing. “Play it cool. They’re coming back in.”
