Kate McMurray writes smart romantic fiction. She likes creating stories that are brainy, funny, and of course sexy, with regular guy characters and urban sensibilities. She advocates for romance stories by and for everyone. When she’s not writing, she edits textbooks, watches baseball, plays violin, crafts things out of yarn, and wears a lot of cute dresses. She lives in Brooklyn, NY, with a bossy cat and too many books.

~3.5~

Hollywood stars don't make the best MCs, but Devin Delaney is not your typical big name actor. He's nice and down to earth. Devin loves acting, and he likes fame too, but being famous has its price.

Having just broken up with his girlfriend *cough, beard, cough* of three years, Devin is stranded at LaGuardia airport the day before Thanksgiving. This is how he meets Andy, the short, feminine gate/flight attendant with the floppy hair and big heart.

Andy and Devin become fast friends and lovers; the attraction between them simmers and overflows. Devin pursues Andy, but Andy doesn't want to get hurt. He's already falling hard and fast for the beautiful, closeted Devin.

The story is told from Andy's first-person POV, but I would have preferred a dual POV. Devin has an epiphany of sorts after he meets Andy, and I wanted to see what was going on in his head.

Devin December, as the title suggests, takes place in December, and it has a definite holiday fairy tale vibe: ordinary boy meets his prince.

This is a low-angst, quiet story. The men actually talk things through and listen to one another. Devin accepts Andy for who he is, messy apartment and all, and Andy sees the real Devin, a guy who likes Thai food and Christmas trees, not just Devin Delaney the famous actor.

I would have liked more steam and a longer ending; we get a tentative HEA, but the book ends rather abruptly.

2.5 stars

I wonder if maybe I'm just not in the right mood, or that the author's stories are no longer works for my current reading taste (the last two of hers I read back in 2012 and 2013, I gave them 2.5 stars as well) ... but I didn't like this as much as other readers. Heck, I couldn't even think of this as one of my 'okay' reads.

The premise was nice, I liked the idea of connecting to someone due to being stranded on airport. It SUCKS when it happens in real life, but I imagine it gives a good set-up for two strangers to have long conversation about themselves since they can't really go anywhere. It's like being in small space of road trip, you know? So yes, I liked the premise. And I liked Andy in that beginning too.

But what happened next, I didn't really enjoy. One of my dislikes when it came to romance, gay romance especially, with popular people, is that ultimatum from the love interest: "I hate being your secret, come out or else". I don't know, I just never really like those. Yes, maybe it hurts not being able to be in the public with that person you love. But when you already decide to try the relationship and then demand such thing, it just makes me feel annoyed. It's easy to say that "hey, you need to be brave, why keep lying to yourself, come out as gay, you'll be happier, et cetera, et cetera" ... but the truth is, we will never know when we're not in that person's shoes, won't we?

On top of that, I also didn't connected to Devin as a character. I wish I could sympathize with him, but at the same time, he wasn't that too convincing for me as someone who would actually appreciate Andy.

So yeah, this just didn't work for me, sadly. I just didn't like both characters enough to push this into my 3-stars rating. On that note, maybe I should give up on this author's works for the time being. I just have to admit that my reading preference has chance over the years, and her works just don't cut it.

I'm giving the 3 Stars for Andy who I really enjoyed here. I think he can do much, much better than Devin. Although the read mentioned the two of them talking and getting to know each other I never got anything more than his shallow veneer. As a result, I never really connected with his character, too Hollywood for me.

3.5 stars. Cute, low-angst holiday story with an abrupt ending, but there's an epilogue at the author's website.

Mostly read it because I saw it took place in an airport and thought that was fun. Andy was a delight to read, such a great character. Devin was just okay, kind of a shallow and selfish Hollywood guy.

I liked that Andy was firm about what he wanted and what he was willing to do. Eventually, Devin stops being stupid at least. The book ends in a HFN; I would’ve liked a proper epilogue, to be honest.

Whew, not gonna lie. I wouldn't have been a happy camper, and would have felt some type of way with how the book ended, if she didn't have an epilogue on her page. It was a great one too. These two were great together and glad they got their HEA . I just love when a book has an epilogue, I could live without a prologue but an epilogue, I just love them.

It was nice. I liked the stranded at the airport idea. But to be honest I’m sure I really got into the story. Maybe it’s because it’s a short one. I felt the ending was to abrupt. Again, this is a short-read so I have to keep that in mind right?

I liked the characters well enough. I would have liked a little more depth though.

I really enjoyed the story, but the ending was MUCH too abrupt. An epilogue is here at the author's website: http://www.katemcmurray.com/2015/12/d...

But still a very good story, with guys who really got to know each other (in between the sex scenes). The guys acted like adults, and Andy really did get Devin to think seriously about what he wanted long-term.

Definitely too short. I also wasn’t satisfied with the ending, it’s like right when it got to the good part it all wrapped up and with a freaking hug? Seriously? The man publicly outs himself for you and then flies back from LA to NY and you hug it out?

Overall it was a cute Christmas story. The holiday airport hookup made the beginning hold my interest more than the last 50%. Andy started to be a little glum towards the end which took me out of the holiday cheer but I’ve decided to let it go cause holidays and all that. So 2.5 but I rounded up cause Christmas.

This is a new-to-me author. I’m not sure about the writing; I think I need to try another non-celebrity trope to see if that trope was the main issue for me. I did find there was too much describing of outfits, and a bit more telling than showing. Not to mention, while not instalove, it certainly did happen at a fast clip.

That being said, I did enjoy this. I especially found Andy’s direct, no-nonsense communication refreshing, and him calling Devin out a few times. And I liked where this ended (and no epilogue!). I’d definitely be willing to give this author another shot.

This story had more potential than was actualized. I never felt vested in Andy's and Devin's relationship, so I didn't care whether they survived Devin's closet or not. It was nicely romantic, but in that way that slightly overcooked spaghetti can be tolerable if accompanied by decent marinara. It's ok if you're hungry enough but you just want to get to that point in the meal when you're full. All in all, too sweet for my tastes and what felt like no effort. I'm left feeling très underwhelmed.

This book could have easily been a four star read bordering on 5 for me if it were longer & did not end quite so abruptly.Though it had a winter wonderland atmosphere it had enough flashes of reality to remain current & topical especially in regards to closeted Hollywood actors & the public's obsessive hunger to know about their sexuality.

This was a nice and entertaining read.
Regular guy meets movie star and they have sex on an airport lavatory. The sex is so incredible that said movie star comes back to New York to repeat the experience and of course falls in love for our simple guy.
If you are rolling your eyes about that plot you should probably not bother any further because, yeah it doesn`t get more realistic or believable than that.
If you don`t mind and are dreaming about Brad Pitt or Chris Hemsworth anyhow, this might be a nice little reminder how they could easily fall in love with you.
As the regular guy here is a flight attendant (like me) of course I am now always looking out for those straight celebrities who will choose me for their coming out experience, unfortunately no luck (so far) but who knows.....
Quick and nice read but nothing memorable, 3 stars!

4.5 stars

This is officially my favorite holiday read of this season. It starts around Thanksgiving and ends on Christmas eve. This book was sexy and funny. I was totally smitten with the couple. It’s novella length but I feel like I really got to know the characters. This was a perfect quick read with depth and a wonderful love story.

Andy is working at the airport tin New York the night before Thanksgiving when a freak snowstorm hits and strands thousands. One of those is the hunky Hollywood actor Devin Delaney who was just dumped by his starlet girlfriend. Andy is starstruck but he can tell Devin needs a friend. Doesn’t hurt that he’s friendly and hot. What he doesn’t expect is a returned interest in his attraction. They spend their night stranded at the airport making out and fooling around in secret. Both knowing it’ll be over when the runways are open in the morning. Devin has made it clear he can’t come out or it’ll ruin his career so Andy resolves himself to the memories until Devin appears on his doorstep.

I LOVED these two together. Though the story is told from Andy’s POV only I felt the struggle and pain Devin must be feeling to suppress and keep secret a part of himself so he can live his dream of being an actor. How he can’t be truly happy because others won’t accept him being a gay leading man. On the other side Andy is out and proud so he struggles with being Devin’s secret guy on the side. He tells himself they’ll ride it out as long as they can together because he wants Devin for as long as he can have them. Andy also fears for his heart because though he tells his head it won’t last he knows he’s falling for Devin. Devin and Andy are so damn good together but they can’t BE together. It’s kind of beautiful and tragic in a subtle modern way. They have amazing chemistry together. I loved every minute they spent together whether it’s talking or getting busy.

This book was also pretty funny. They guys had some good back and forth. I also really enjoyed hearing Andy’s thought process. He was open to the possibilities but smart about it as well. I liked how well they get along from the start despite being from very different worlds. This was a wonderful rich story with amazing characters. A great love story. All wrapped up in the warm and fuzzy feeling of the holidays. I highly recommend this one even if Christmas is over. If not this year then definitely put it on your list for next year or whenever. I loved it!

This is a very very sweet holiday book. I’m always a stickler for the rich, successful, famous guy falling for the middle class nobody sort of guy. There’s something about that trope that just does it for me. So, I was super happy about that. I loved the characters. Devin, the movie star, though clueless in a lot of ways, was super charming, respectful, and not very movie star-ish if you ask me lol. A dream guy basically. And Andy, the flamboyant flight attendant with the sharp tongue and tender heart. These two together are quite entertaining. I felt only slightly rushed through this book. I wanted certain places to linger more and though YES it was an HEA I was hoping for an epilogue. That’s just my personal opinion though. As far as flow, writing, all that jazz it was spot on! Great book.

Andy is a flight attendant who is stuck working gate duty during a snowstorm the night before Thanksgiving. Devin is a famous actor trying to get out of the city after a public announcement of his breakup with his girlfriend. Stranded in the airport, Devin and Andy spend some time chatting, and then eventually other stuff. A "temporary friendship" is formed. Andy is surprised when Devin reaches out to him a few days later, and the two embark on a real friendship and relationship. Andy struggles with having to keep everything hidden, and that causes some strife for our guys. Despite a short time together, the guys develop real feelings for each other, and they are adorable together. I loved reading their story, and I would love to see a short story about them down the road to see what they are up to.

Kate McMurray and Christmas stories, well worth the read.

The set-up was really good. Stranded in the airport during a holiday is a familiar concept, but I never really thought about what that might mean for the employees. It was fun to see Andy and Devin fill their time in more ways than just the obvious. Between the frustration of being stuck and trying to avoid getting caught with their pants down, they had some real opportunities to get to know each other.

I wasn't sure how they would continue after their first night together. We know that Devin ends up on Andy's doorstep, however there is a lot more that goes into that idea than just showing up. I liked that this part of the the book continued the same balance established at the airport: romance but with real world problems. Coming out is a very personal decision, but it affects everyone in a closeted relationship. I think McMurray did a great job allowing both men to work out their own feelings while respecting the other.

There weren't many secondary characters, with only Andy's co-worker Sarah being of note. I liked her as a kind of pace keeper for the story. She often used gossip to let the reader know important, sudden shifts in the story and the passage of time. Which brings me to the only distraction: the abrupt ending. Andy and Sarah had had a brief, jealousy-filled conversation about which one of them would be more Devin's type, with Sarah reluctantly allowing for the possibility that Devin was gay but still giving Andy zero chance, and obviously having no idea that Andy was already dating Devin. She seemed like a good person/friend/character otherwise, but this scene got to me more than it seemed to get to Andy. I was soooo looking forward to her eating her words. And the already ill-timed ending felt even more premature because there wasn't any reaction from anyone despite being in the absolute perfect spot for a reaction, especially Sarah's.

I have read the epilogue available on McMurray's website. It's the only part of the story with Devin's POV. It's cute, and it fills in the gaps between one Christmas and the next. But I guess I'm petty because I still want Sarah's reaction.

Overall, another solid story from Kate McMurray. Despite my own issue with the ending, I think most people will love the feel of this Christmas book.

So was very sweet and very much inst attraction. Andy is snowed in at the airport while working flight checkin when everything is grounded. Sexy box office heartthrob Devin is there since he was just dumped by his girlfriend. Some sparks fly, some sexy adventures, and Devin goes off to holiday. But Devin is closeted, and Andy does not to go back in the closet. He wants out and proud with his boyfriend. Devin's coming out was so incredibly sweet and romantic.

3.5/5 - enjoyable short read, but was just left wanting a bit more at the end. The ending all felt a bit too abrupt and nicely wrapped up, despite it being a novella I would have liked to see a short epilogue or an extended final chapter to see a bit more.

Review: Andy is a flight attendant working the departure gates for Thanksgiving. With the advent of a blizzard, all flights are cancelled, and hotels are quickly filled. The remaining stranded passengers have to stay at the airport, along with the staff. One stranded passenger is Devin, a Hollywood star who just broke up with his girlfriend of three years.
Devin and Andy talk, and hook up, when it turns out he isn't that straight. Andy is perfectly willing for Devin to be the one night stand that he can't tell anyone about (since he's not about to out anyone), but through the night, something happens as they talk.
I like the fact that Andy wasn't in awe of Devin or his celebrity status, and that was actually a detriment to beginning or continuing a serious relationship with him. Devin was hard to get a read on, because everything was from Andy's POV. One thing that I didn't really like was

Things That Happen in Terminal D

This romance is so off-the-wall and totally unbelievable that the main reason I got through it was the fact that Kate McMurray got so many details right.

For example, although Northeast Airlines doesn't exist, she sets much of the tale in LaGuardia Airport's Terminal D--which is where Delta Airlines is, and she gets everything about that place perfect--I should know, I live across the bay from it and fly out of it at least eight times a year.

And she is dead right on Astoria, Queens, where I grew up and which has basically not changed in 70 years and imbues its inhabitants with the kind of subtle accommodation of life that is part of the persona of MC Andy Weston.

On the other hand, movie megastar Devin Delaney also comes across as real as he can be, as a closeted man who is suddenly awakened to what his life should be like if he simply opened the door.

That the way this sweet romance turns out is totally unbelievable but entertaining enough to keep you turning the pages all the way to the end. It really deserves 3 1/2 stars, but I'll let it up to four instead of sliding it down to three.
