The Eldritch Files #1-3

The Eldritch Files #1-3

Rate this book
Eldritch...eerie, weird, or spooky. Perhaps, all three. Come to New Orleans where the Witches rule and the weird just keeps getting weirder.

This is an omnibus of the first three books of The Eldritch Files, together in one convenient volume.

Book I - Elemental Arcane

Samantha Hawthorne lives a rather curious life in New Orleans running a magic and herb shop. As an Elemental Witch in the Big Easy and owner of a wolf Familiar as well as the head of a former Faerie Queen, curious is as quiet as it gets for Sam.

Until children start turning into blood-thirsty Changelings and attack their parents.

When one of these children shows up in front of her shop, Sam and her friends are determined to find out where they’re coming from and where the exchanged children are being kept and put a stop to it. But will they succeed when they find themselves pitted against ninja ghouls, one of the oldest and darkest enemies of the mortal world, and a secret from Sam’s childhood that could unravel her magic?

Book II - Elemental Shadows

How do we tell the good from the bad when they look the same?

Elemental Witch and Magic Shop owner, Samantha Hawthorne, faces her future with the knowledge she was raised, taught, and groomed by the very evil responsible for the disappearance of her mother. Threads of Arcane Magic linger alongside the guilt Samantha endures for killing an innocent in her failed pursuit for revenge.

Now Clerics, the Witch’s Judiciary Branch, appear and request her aid in proving the self-appointed Witch Queen of New Orleans possesses the rumored Malleus Maleficarum, The Witch’s Hammer. They believe her command of the book’s Arcane power is responsible for the death of three Witch Elders.

But something else is rising in the city as reports of ghost sightings and evil shadows increase. Faced with a lingering fear her own use of Arcane Magic has tainted her in some way, mounting pressure with the threat of a warlock from the Clerics, and suspicion that the evil that escaped her is still influencing her decisions, Samantha calls upon her friends to weave their unique magic together to stop the rampage of Elemental Shadows.

Book III - Elemental Moon

Adjusting to the news her wolf is more than just a Familiar while lobbying the Witch's Parliament to remove her recent warlocking, Samantha Hawthorne is approached by an Alpha Werewolf. Two of his pack are missing and he asks Sam to help find them.

Before she can answer, the Alpha marks her with a bite in order to guarantee her assistance, and to declare her his mate should she fail.

Now it's a race against the Alpha’s venom to find the missing pack members while battling Ceremonial Magicians, revenge-seeking Clerics and Sam’s Arcane power that has suddenly acquired a voice of its own!

I have to say I really enjoyed this series. I downloaded the first 3 books from Book Bub and once I got finished the 2nd book I knew immediately that I was going to want the rest of the series. These books literally had me glued and wanting more.

As with most serials, the first book was a teeny bit slow as the author was setting up the world Samantha Hawthorne, Elemental Witch and owner of Bell, Book & Candle lives in. So wasn't until about half through when I really started getting into it. I love reading all things paranormal and this was a tad different than some of the others I am used to reading. There are many paranormal elements in this: witches, vampires, lycans, faeries, but each have a different take on how they are normally presented.

Set in New Orleans, the books center around Samantha and her "Merry Men"; Ivan (Cyber Witch) and Kyle (Hedge Witch). Added to the mix are her on-again, off-again boyfriend Crwys, his cop partner Levi, and her wolf familiar, Grey. We are also introduced to Samantha's Aunt Ina and Kyle's Aunt Arden who are also front and center for many of the novels. As expected, this is a 7 book serial so far and each book has a new mystery or magical problem for her and her friends to solve.

In my humble opinion, this is not a series to be read out of order. However, the author does a great job of giving a quick blurb about past events. Normally this pisses me off in a serial, in that I am already reading book 4, so it's safe to assume I've read books 1-3 and I don't need a COMPLETE rehashing of the events of the previous books. But, these blurbs were literally, short, sweet & to the point, enough of a refresher and not overly done.

The only thing that bothered me about the book was something minor. It drives me nuts when authors use "big" or "different" words to mean something else, but then proceeds to tell us anyway what the words mean. For example, one of my favorite characters is Crwys and in the beginning when she is introducing the character, she says "pronounced like Cruise, as in Tom Cruise", so why not just spell it Cruise? I am assuming that it has something to do with his background, but we haven't quite gotten into that yet. And another example, using words like "widdershins" and "desolil" to refer to "clockwise and counter-clockwise". Can't you just say "clockwise"? That really is the only annoying thing about the book.

Otherwise, I love all of the characters, even the bad ones, and I am very anxious to see what happens in the further installments. Highly recommended for any fan of the paranormal.

Excellent series! I am hooked and now reading book four! Plenty of mystery, action, twists, some humor and romance. Meet Sam,Crwys, Ivan, Kyle, Levi and Grey. There are more characters you will meet but these are some of the most important ones. Each book has a story and they are tied together. You will learn about their pasts, have surprises as the characters grow. I highly recommend this book and the series!

Witches, warlocked and spells

Excellent read! Fast paced and filled with magical spells and incantations that grow more interesting and complicated as we learn repercussions and unintended results. Enjoyed the strong female lead as the author fully develops her character letting us into her head and watch events unfold. Will read more from this author.

Interesting Books

I found this book set to be a very interesting read. Good cast of quirky characters and an interesting take on the paranormal society and hierarchy lend themselves to a creative twist to the storyline. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Sam is a witch - well, half witch on her mother’s side - who owns a shop on Bourbon Street in New Orleans named Bell, Book, and Candle. But when children start killing people, things could get personal as danger creeps closer and closer to home.. These attacks are only the beginning of the cases she will solve in this boxed set, and they could potentially start a chain of events that ends with someone she loves dearly being taken from her. Add a possessed doll head, a wolf familiar, and cyber magic, and this makes for quite an interesting read.

I must admit to a love/hate relationship with this particular set of books. Part of me would love to keep them, while the other part - the editing/proofreading part of me - wants to chuck it in the bin for its too simplistic writing and the fact that as a reader I feel like some of the antics of this main character have been lost in the ether. These supposed first three books should definitely not be the first three. There should have been at least one before these three according to situations described in the not aptly named first book of this series. However, in this case, the part of me that wants to keep them has won out, and that is due to the likability factor of the characters involved. Even the villains of these stories are likable, in a “hope they get caught and put away for life and afterlife” kind of way.

The Eldritch Files Series, Books 1-3: Elemental Arcane, Elemental Shadows, Elemental Moon (Kindle Edition)

No spoilers...

I'm so glad I have the boxed set; it meant that I could just continue to turn the pages, no rushing back to Amazon to hunt up and buy book two then later book three.

The story line was fascinating to me. There was no point at which I became bored, or had thoughts of writing it in a different way. The storyline completely sucked me in - hook, line and sinker.

I fell in love with all of the characters, and my heart broke when...no, that would be a spoiler and I don't do spoilers. Suffice to say my emotions became well and truly entangled.

My heart belongs to Crwys❣

There were a few typos that I made a note of, but apart from this, I thoroughly enjoyed the read. My thanks to the author for a story well told.

I cannot wait to read book four.

This is entertaining. There is a love story, but it didn't get in the way of the rest of the action. Until the last chapter of the 3rd book. It may have just jumped the shark for me.

Trilogy was very entertaining and worth the read. I could stand for less of the love story element, but overall worth reading.
