The Refuge Colection #1.2

The Wrong Path: A Tale from Refuge

About Refuge
There is a town called Refuge about which I plan to relate many curious tales. Remarkably, every house is oddly dissimilar from its neighbour, which is different again to the next.

Some of these places where the residents of Refuge find themselves living appear to be average family homes in a town like the one where you live, or where you grew up. Some are council-owned terrace houses straight from the back streets of post-war Birkenhead across the Mersey from my home town of Liverpool. One is a Canadian ‘fixer-upper’ that has seen better days. The one across the road is reminiscent of a Victorian cottage from the Kentish countryside. There are gentrified Melbourne townhouses, a South African hovel, a pre-hurricane era French Quarter brothel from N’awleans. One is a ski-lodge extracted from the Austrian Tyrol, while its neighbour would more closely suit the ‘burbs of Seattle.

There is a Tavern that looks like it may be of Irish heritage, a wooden fisherman’s shack that seems to have come straight from a Greek postcard. The list goes on; the homes are as varied as their inhabitants, and often reflect the nature of the people whose lives are led mainly within the confines of Refuge.

Apart from that, all seems normal- The people of Refuge have an assortment of occupations (most of them), families (some) and all have stories to make your hair curl… Oh, and they are hungry to share their stories with you.

The Wrong Path is first in a series of creepy little tales from the township of Refuge, a community in which the dregs of human society, and indeed some not so human citizens, have made their homes. This one is a retelling of the Red Riding Hood fable, only the wolf is a cat, Riding Hood isn't a little girl and the woodcutter might not be there to help. There is definitely a walk in the forest, though. And spatters of red.

I read this as part of volume one of the The Refuge Collection. All starts of normal enough, but things go very strangely, horribly wrong. A disquieting little tale for when you've got a moment of quiet. Enter this part of Refuge, if you dare.
