Yep, I'm still loving this series and the characters. Naru is such a sweet bean, and I love her.

I find it hard to believe anyone could be both so mannerless as to show up uninvited at the home of a person he'd beaten for a prize to gloat about AND so clueless as to expect to be put up for the night, but come to think of it I have experienced behavior almost that rude. I guess I'm just used to characters in Japanese fiction being more concerned with politeness! And I did find it touching how the local kids tried to keep them apart (with bugs!) so Handa's pride wouldn't be wounded.
Here the children have made paper planes out of the visitor's vanity collection of calligraphy magazines.
Also, I think your sticky-up hair is adorable, kids! Don't get haircuts, please!

City Mouse and Country Mouse.
World: Solid art that is simple but effective. The world building is small and serves the story, there are aspects of town living that are done well here and when paired with a city mouse the world building stands out.
Story: Fun little arc where city friends visits Sensei and of course chaos ensues but also they learn from each other. The idea of art and inspiration is done well here and also the idea of rivals and life changing art and vice versa. I love the interaction between the Tokyo people and the town.
Characters: Beautiful little interactions with character that show the difference between rural Japan and metropolitan Japan, it’s done well neither is stupid or backwards just different and those banter and character moments are earned.
Solid arc.
Onward to the next book!

Having read Vol 2/3 first...my general thoughts.
Don't ask about Vol 1.
I wondered if the story would delve into the mysticism of Japanese calligraphy especially since a young rival of Sensei Handa arrives in this issue.
So far no .
What we've got is a rural comedy with a bunch of likeable characters.
My fav?
Probably Naru...a child who I think was identified as a female...who seems to be a force of nature..drops the occasional word of wisdom and speaks of themselves in the third person.
Their accomplice is Hina, equally small/cute and generally quiet
The only exception when her daily exercise card was stamped upside down...and nearly caused a minor breakdown.
I know the feeling..

Kritikan senada dengan itulah yang menjadi salah satu sebab Handa Seishu ‘mengungsi’ ke desa atas rekomendasi Ayah dan Kawafuji, teman satu-satunya. Kali ini, Kawafuji datang ke desa bersama dengan Kosuke Kanzaki, si juara 1 kaligrafi usia 18 tahun, yang pernah mengalahkan dan membuat Handa stress akut.
Sempat membuat Hiroshi dan Miwa khawatir dan melakukan aksi pencegahan, ternyata keadaan tidak semengerikan bayangan mereka. Seri kali ini terasa lebih dalam karena mengangkat motivasi dan semangat Handa dan Kosuke bergelut di dunia kaligrafi. Tetap gokil dan sarat dengan kehangatan persahabatan penduduk desa.

Alright, we've arrived. Things sort of coalesced in this volume, both in plot and tone. With the arrival of Sensei's city friends and the calligraphy rival, it starts to make sense what Yoshino is doing with this character. I like where this is now.
But I can't tell the difference between Seishū and Miwa and between Hiroshi and Kōsuke. Someone's gotta cut their hair or grow some boobs or something.

I gave it the 3 volume try but this series is doing nothing for me. I love slice of life stories but these characters I don't find interesting in the slightest. There's nothing for me to grab on to that would make me want to continue so I'm going to stop here.

Another winning volume!
Kawafuji, satu-satu nya temen Handa, (mereka udah temenan dari SMP... WOOW, kuat yah Kawa ngadepin Handa.. XDD )datang berkunjung ke pulau. Dia tidak datang sendirian, tapi juga bersama Konsuke, kaligrafer muda yang tidak hanya seorang kaligrafer yang mengalahkan Handa di kejuaraan kaligrafi, tapi juga fanboy nya Handa.
Susah payah Hiro dan Miwa, menyingkirkan peluang buat Handa & Konsuke buat ngobrol dmei menjaga perasaan Handa, tapi ternyata Handa menjawab tantangan dan ajakan Konsuke dengan kalimat bijak (courtesy of nenek Yasuba XD):
"Silahkan duluan dan tunggulah aku. Aku pasti segera mengejarmu dengan menunggangi angin."
Kawafuji dan Konsuke pun pulang kembali ke Tokyo dengan kesadaran bahwa dengan tinggal di pulau mungkin telah membawa pengaruh baik pada Handa. Yah setidaknya Kawafuji telah memberikan kata-kata penyemangat pada dua kaligrafer tersebut, seperti ini:
"Tercatatlah dalam ingatan bukan dalam buku rekor"
"Menangkan pertarungan walaupun kalah dalam pertandingan"
"Daripada nomor satu, jadilah satu-satunya"
"Barang yang bisa dijual lebih baik daripada yang juara"
Hahahaha... yang terakhir tipikal Kawa sekali
Setelah kehebohan akibat kedatangan Kawa dan Konsuke, Handa pun kembali menjalani kehidupan sehari-harinya di pulau. Main dengan Naru, minta makan ke rumah pak RT, maen dengan Miwa dan Tama... dan pengalaman pertama menghadapi badai yang melewati pulau.
Di sini kita diperlihatan cara-cara menghadapai badai yang bahkan seorang kakek-kakek dan anak kecil bisa melakukannya. Sugoi!!

Another delightful volume to the series! Truly the addition of Handa's friends from the city were so funny! Them fishing was priceless!! As Naru shaking people down for money for shells!! Then you have the storm on top and poor Handa being scared to death once again!! For three volumes I find these characters really flushed out and fully formed! I am looking forward to seeing their stories grow!!

Wollte es jez doch noch fertig lesen und ja, was soll ich sagen, ich mochte auch diesen Band wieder sehr. Gerade die Situationskomik macht Barakamon einfach aus und auch die Charaktere sind einem schon richtig ans Herz gewachsen. Die Entwicklung kommt auch nicht zu kurz und so kann ich nur sagen, freu mich auf den nächsten Band xD xD

Another good, though not great book in the series. I love how we get to know more about the characters, as they are what makes this series good. However, I loved the first two volumes and this is the first one I didn't love as much, unfortunately. I do own the fourth volume, so lets hope it picks up again.

Este tomo se me ha hecho un pelín más pesado de leer porque he tenido que buscar demasiado en el diccionario... Por suerte tengo fresco el dorama, aunque la parte de la pesca apenas la recordaba. Tengo la sensación de que no es tan "wholesome" como por ejemplo el primer tomo. De todos modos tengo ganas de seguir leyendo esta serie.

On average, it took me more than one year to read each volume thus I just finished the third volume in its fifth year. The stories in this volume still packed lots of laughs. Such an enjoyable read.

On sent bien dans certains passage le sexisme paternaliste à la japonaise ce qui m'a pas mal dérangé. Le reste est plutôt bon enfant mais dans le même genre (homme qui garde une enfant agitée et mignonne) j'ai été beaucoup moins dérangée par Yotsuba&.

Fun manga. Kawafuji and a fellow calligrapher come to visit Handa and have fun adventures in this one. The book is still fun to read. Not as brilliant as the first two volumes though for some reason.

We got new characters introduced! I honestly really like Kawafuji ( probably the tattoos, lmao ), but Kosuke is extremely annoying. Like this man gives me Zenitsu from Demon Slayer vibes with how whiny he is, but at least Zenitsu grows on you and actually has a reason for being upset all the time.
