*Big hair, leg warmers, bitchin’ music, and the Brat Pack—what’s not to love about the 80’s? Head back to 1984 in Melt With You (A Totally 80’s Romance) by Addison Moore coming very soon!

Melt With You (A Totally 80's Romance) Young Adult

Junior year is really shaping up to be something. After three years of trying, I finally made the cheer squad. And on the last day of summer practice the demigod of Glen Heights High, Joel Effing Miller, finally notices me—right after he runs me over and lands my leg in a cast. Yeah, junior year is really shaping up to be something.

I swear I didn’t see her. But I’m making it up to her every way I can. I’m driving her to school, helping her to all of her classes. I’ve never met anyone so down to earth—a girl who actually likes the things I like. Melissa Malinowski is a breath of fresh air. I can’t stop thinking about her. I swear I didn’t see her, but I should have. Melissa is too beautiful to miss.

My name is Kelly Masterson, and nobody messes with me. I’m Joel Miller’s girlfriend. So Joel ran Mouse-akowski over with his truck. So what? He should’ve finished her off. And now he wants to break up? As if. Nobody breaks up with me. Joel is mine, and he’s going to stay that way. And after having a nice little chat with his mother, it’s become clear why he’s bending over backward to please that human speed bump. I’ll make sure Mouse-akowski understands this, too. That will be the end of Joel and his nerdy little plaything. My name is Kelly Masterson, and nobody messes with me.

*1984 called and it wants to Melt With You.

If I could've chosen what era I wanted to be a teen, I would've hands down chosen the 80s. The music, the scene, movies, and the attire. Hooked! My parents raised me on 80s since it was their era and I've always loved it.
This story says it's based on true events just scrambled into unrecognizable traces, And as I was reading I kept thinking about what was true and what wasn't. Now that never broke me from reading or believing but I had a constant nag in my head about needing to know. The characters were 100% honest, great and crazy fun. The lingo back in the day was hilarious I didn't realize valley girl talk started back then, honestly I thought it was a 90s thing. I loved all the music band drops or song drops I had mostly all of the songs on a playlist already so it was fun listening to these while reading. Added to the element. The pace was great, a few hiccups near the end just didn't jive right with me but no biggy. I can't wait to read more from this series.
Like totally fer sure this book was pretty bitchin!

5 "totally bitchin'!" stars!

This book was like wicked awesome! I like loved it! Melt With You is such a fun read. Set in 1984, we see all the fads of that time and it was hilarious! Big hair, leg warmers, wild makeup, and rubberband bracelets all make an appearance. The scrunchies, yellow Sony Walkmans, Trapper Keepers, and mix tapes were reminiscent of my childhood. I felt like the characters were believable and I enjoyed every bit of this story.

Melissa Malinowski is a bit awkward, a bit geeky, and so relatable. She is entering her junior year of high school and this year should be a good one. After years of trying, she has finally made the cheer squad and feels like she is on her way to fitting in. Unfortunately, everything changes the last day of summer break when she is hit by a truck driven by Joel Effing Miller.

"[He] is a god among men, a deity on this and any other football field and rightly so."

"[He] is the perfect package. There's simply no denying it."

Joel, the star quarterback in high school, is sweet, smart, gorgeous, and an all around great guy. He has a big heart that we see from the beginning. After the accident, he wants to help Melissa with everything. Even when his girlfriend, Kelly, doesn't want him to, we see him sticking up for this girl he hardly even knows. Though his friends don't understand it, he wants to right this wrong.

Joel is constantly trying to fix things for me, to reassure me, to take care of me in the sweetest way possible. I’ve never had that before, but it feels amazing

Melissa has had a crush on Joel for a while but knows nothing will happen because they are from different sides of the tracks and she's always been invisible to him. However, as Joel starts spending time with her, he discovers there is so much more to Melissa. She is not only beautiful, but is smart and has a great sense of humor. They have things in common and have fun hanging out and listening to music. We see a sweet relationship form between Joel and Melissa and the excitement of young love.

"We kissed.” I fall back onto my bed and pull a pillow over my face. The word kiss sounds far too simplistic to describe what happened last night. It was something more, something intense, electric, spiritual even. It felt as though Joel Miller had grafted his heart over mine, and that kiss was simply a way of stitching our souls together. That kiss felt like more of an I love you than words could ever be.

Then there is Kelly Masterson. She is the quintessential mean girl. You do not want to mess with her. She rules the school and thinks she has control over everything, including her boyfriend.

"You belong to me. Don’t you ever forget it.”

Kelly cuts people down and says horrible things. She has made Melissa's life hell in the past and she's ready to continue the antics.

This book was a sweet romance with just a bit of angst. You sort of know what is going to happen but it was still so entertaining. It's a light read that will have you giggling like you are back in high school and smiling at how great Joel and Melissa are for each other.

Sometimes in life, you find exactly what you’re looking for when you least expect it, and I think Mel and I are living proof of that.
We’re proof of every good thing.

I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Had high school cliches (that was expected from the blurb though). It got a little cheesy at times (didn't really annoy me, more like amused me). Still cute and enjoyable though.

I was brought back in time with this book! Addison manages to pull me in with each and every book that lady writes. She is the type of author that you one1click even without looking at the excerpt!

Melt With You truly brought me every emotion I could possibly imagine, not like the best reads Ive had that have given me every emotion you could possibly feel, but much more. I was brought back in time to when I was in high school. It was like this book was made with me in made. It completely melted my heart and soul. Perfect name Addison!

This was an era when I branched out from books and actually began to have a life, so I was able to relate totally with the character. The story gave the real meaning to what life is all about as a young teen branching into adulthood, that people are more alike that what you think when you're that age. Hate jealously doesn't matter in the end nor, what click your in, but life in general is and of course love.

Addison is flawless in her writing skills and impeccably talented in giving you emotions and desires as if you are really there. I was glued to the book savoring every word! I cant wait till the next book!

Melt With You cute title right? I thought so too.

Melissa's junior year is right on track to be her best year yet. She secured a spot on the coveted cheerleading team. She has an awesome best friend. Like I said her life is looking up...until fate knocks her on her butt in the form of Joel Miller's truck and lands her in the hospital and her leg in a cast. Her whole world is turned topsy-turvy.

Now Joel Effing Miller is that "hot guy" in high school. You know the one I am talking about, the one all the girls fawn over and dream about being with but he's almost always dating a cheerleader. In this case an evil cheerleader who likes to make Melissa's life hell.

Joel decides to help Melissa while in the cast and soon realizes that she is not only beautiful but an awesome person. His girlfriend Kelly doesn't like this at all and is determined to do what she has to destroy her life at any cost. Will Melissa and Joel develop more than a friendship? Will Kelly win and destroy Melissa? Read Melt With You and find out.

Melt With You is an amazing coming of age story where you get to witness the growth of characters that will both touch your heart and in some cases bring back memories of your own. Addison Moore did an amazing job keeping the story PG because we know she can write R rated books like a pro.

Pretty sure if I say I love this book, that would do it a disservice. However.... I absolutely LOVED this book. If you're one of those people who love 80's movies, give this book a shot. The story and plot were great, the characters were fun and well written; they had fantastic chemistry too. You get so many music, product and just all around 80's references, that it becomes real to you. You see it in your head perfectly. When they talk about huge pink cans of Aqua Net, the spray cloud, the hair styles, the jelly shoes, the makeup.... it's amazingly well done. It flowed so well that I felt as if I were watching a movie, more than reading a book. Definite recommendation and I'll be awaiting the rest of the series eagerly.

What a fun read! Who doesn't remember Love's Baby Soft, Aqua Net and leg warmers? Melissa is such a sweet character with such endearing geeky qualities who is way too naive for her own good. Joel is swoon worthy and wise beyond his high school years.

Loved the angst and the humor and the retro references. This is the first in a new series from Addy Moore, and I am so loving it!

I was transported back in time and I loved every single moment of it. The 80's themed book was a wonderful read and goes to show that high school drama is something that NEVER changes. Addison Moore did a great job taking me back to a time that I loved. I am excited for the next 2 books that will take me back yet again. Also I can't get enough of the characters in the story...need more.

I was born in September 1984. I don't remember too much of the '80s, so I don't quite know what the author was writing about. Fashion of those years, styling hair are strange to me. I knew only a few songs and performers.
Overall, quite interestingly written book. Beverly Hills 90210 in a nutshell. Quickly read, from the point of view of the heroine and hero.

Melt With You (A Totally '80s Romance 1) - R
Violence: none
Language: fewer than 340, including deity. Just under 50 FBombs. Loads of nasty high school slang.
Sex: high school recreational sex alluded to, descriptive kissing, petting, sex

I'm not sure who the audience is for this book because it's the '80s, and yet it's like a YA or early adult book that's written in the style that YA's romanticize things are: bed hopping, disgusting language, absentee parents (except when you need them to move the plot along or to buy a keg), risky behavior (drugs, alcohol, shoplifting).

I graduated in the South in the '80s, so our world was quite a bit different, but I did enjoy the reminders about what things were popular. This book was edited very well.

I did not love the reminder of high school hell, though. It was like reading *Mean Girls* on steroids. I don't want to read about any more couples in their parts of this series. They were not presented in an appealing light. Deleted for Content. Hard pass.

Loved it even if it is a teen romance!! It has been years since I have read a novel about a teen romance. I sometimes think a YA novel involving college/university students is bordering on too young of a read for me seeing as I am over the hill so to speak LOL. I really liked this one a lot as the book took place in the 80's and that was the era that I was in high school so I totally (like totally dude) related to the book. I loved all the references to the 80's fads (Atari/Cabbage Patch Dolls, leg warmers etc) and to the 80's music and musicians. Loved, loved, loved it!!!

This was cute but had a younger feel- then I read through the list of her books (quite extensive!) and learned that this is marketed as young adult fiction! AH! With that in mind- it had QUITE a bit of language and a fair amount of sexuality (especially considering the intended audience). Overall, it was fun and well-written, but it makes me sad if this is what teens are reading...

This book was such a fun trip down memory lane for me. The eighties were the golden years of my youth, and the author reminded me of things I had forgotten about them. The music stands out the most in my mind, but she pinpointed so many of the fashion trends. Crimping the hair! Teasing it so it would be as high as possible! The not so subtle makeup, and the armful of bracelets. Everything was big and bright, and that time is bright and happy in my memory.

The romance in this book was realistic for a YA story. They acted like real teens rather than oh so jaded like many of the love interests in today's YA stories. They were excited and goofy at times and also unsure of how to act with people. The conversations they had read as natural to me, because they weren't the perfect conversations that convey everything that needs to be said between the characters. They were like real life conversations that don't follow a linear pattern but often jump topics when people get nervous or when they don't have much to add about a particular subject. This didn't hold up until the end of the book though. They started spouting off too perfect declarations to each other and their peers near the end of the story.

I appreciated that Joel wasn't portrayed as a sex expert. He had more experience than Melissa, but he was still a teen guy. I loved the kissing scene, because that is something that doesn't happen between adults. I miss those marathon kissing sessions.

The only thing that kept this book from being five stars for me was that the ending was too unbelievably perfect. Every single thing in their lives fell perfectly into place. There are no loose ends and no problems at all. I'll give you an example of a hopeful but not too perfect ending that I love: The Breakfast Club. It leaves you feeling good, but you also know that it won't be smooth sailing for any of them. They still have their family and school problems, and they haven't changed how society views them. They have not changed the entire social structure at school because they have gotten to know each other better. It wasn't all neatly wrapped up to a fantasy perfection, and I think that's why it resonated with people.

Still, I enjoyed this book very much. Bonus points for her thoughts on how her teacher would view her descriptions. The writer in me got a kick out of those.

Huaraches, scrunchy socks, Esprit, New Wave? Count me in!

I was in 4th grade in 1984, and I had tons of tapes and vinyls of new wave! The songs in this book have taken me back to that era. Ok, not just the songs, everything in it! Like, totally! Haha!

The author Ms. Moore, did a great job in writing this story. It's like getting in a time machine, and watching life in the 80's play back right in front of you! This should be made into a movie, I even think this would be better than 16 Candles (except there is no Long Duk Dong)! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute reading this! It sucks you in completely, especially if you experienced the 80's. You'll probably cringe when you remember some of the things you have done or worn, en laugh out loud at the memories!

I am looking forward to the next installment, and relive the 80's one more time! Everyone knows the music was better then!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was set in a Los Angeles area high school during the 1980's, probably one of the most "totally rad" eras ever - "like fer sure". I loved the 80s Valley Girls lingo, the clothing styles and all of the music wrapped up in this book which made it so fun to read. Melissa and Joel were so cute together and I loved their little romance, especially how they met when he crashed into her...literally. And that psycho bitch Kelly Masterson... I was so glad at the end when Mel finally stood up to her, except I probably would've just punched her in the face. This book was a nice change and a breath of fresh air from the dark and twisted romances I've been reading lately. I'll definitely be reading the next books in the series about the other characters.

This book is adorable! I loved the idea of a girl finally catching the attention of the guy she's been crushing on, only for him to find out she's perfect for him. Of course it didn't quite happen that way, there was some pain involved, but it was still quite wonderful after everything.

I love how Addison Moore took me back to a time I didn't quite experience myself and was able to through her words. Besides the nostagia for the music, I loved the way this book made me laugh. I also loved the characters. I loved being in Joel and Melissa's heads. I also loved their friends and hope to see them again in other books. I read this book in one sitting and couldn't put it down.

This book was like so totally rad. It was so cool to go back to a time without cell phones and social media. Back to when MTV played music and the mixed tape was the ultimate gift. The characters were real and entertaining. Two characters COLLIDE from different sides of the tracks where they have to navigate their way together. Lots of "French artifact linguistics history" was involved.
I enjoyed how the author was not afraid to take some risks. Most YA books skip over love scenes or avoid the issue altogether. There were a few "adult" scenes but not over the top or overdone.
I cannot wait to read the second one. Hope it's Jennifer's Story.

I really liked Mel I thought she was adorable, “you clean up nice yourself.” She leans hard on her crutch and runs her finger down my chest. “I wouldn’t mind seeing what’s underneath there sometime.” The things this girl comes up with, “how could you kiss me like that , and then cut what we had down to a friendship? I’m friends with Larry the Janitor, but I’m not going to let him suck on my boobs!” I liked this book it was a cute read.

I loved the 80s setting & references and the chapters titled after 80s songs, but otherwise, this book is a mess.

It's 1984 and Melissa is an upopular (?) cheerleader from the poor side of town, who is now forced to go to school on the rich side of town. (This 'class warfare' pops up sporadically throughout the book.) After cheerleading practice one late summer day, the campus hottie Joel Effing Miller (that's literally what Melissa calls him...even to his face) backs into her with his truck and breaks her leg. He feels so bad, he insists on driving her to school each day and carrying her books to class...despite the protests of his Mean Girl/Queen B girlfriend Kelly. Joel, of course, falls in love with sweet little practically-perfect-in-every-way Melissa. Kelly loses her mind and does psycho things like send dead mice to Melissa. Of course, love wins the day and Kelly gets her comeuppance (she breaks her leg, too!) and Melissa gets her revenge by announcing to a large part of the student body THAT KELLY MASTURBATED WITH A BANANA AT A SLUMBER PARTY IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. Yikes on a bike.

The author says at the beginning that she lived through the 80s, but the whole book felt more like it was written by someone after they watched ALLLLL the 80s teen movies and read a couple Sweet Valley High books. Every 80s fad/cliche is jammed in as well.

The characters are all very black & white. Sweet/perfect Melissa...knight in shining armor Joel...heinous bitch Kelly. Now I know this is set in the 80s and things were very different then, but this book was written in 2015, which makes all the slut shaming very uncomfortable. Girls are referred to as "hose monsters", "the Beaver Brigade" and just plain ol' sluts. After Joel dumps Kelly, he tells his guy friends to "have at her". It's gross.

My other issue with this book is how uncomfortable it made me. Look, I'm not a prude by any means, but I've never in my life read a YA book with sex scenes. While not as graphic as they could be, there is a heavy make out scene that involves nipple sucking and fingering. And later when Melissa loses her virginity to Joel, there is boob sucking (literally referred to as such, multiple times on one page) and "clenching arousal". It's weird to me to think that an adult wrote sex scenes about 16/17 year olds.

Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of anything that’s in the 80’s time period, but I knew for a fact that when I picked up this book I was going to be in for a treat. Addison Moore has managed to take something ordinary and adapt it in such a way that you just find appealing. Even though this was a book you can’t help but feel what goes on with the characters and how you can relate to them. If you look at now compared to back in the 80’s, times were a lot different, but it was interesting to read. I fell in love with Melissa and Joel right away and I honestly had no idea where this story would take us.

It all started off so well for Melissa, for the first time in a while she was happy with something that she had achieved. Yes, it may be small compared to what the people in her school normally achieve, but for to make it as a cheerleader was such a huge deal to her. And honestly, who can blame her, if I was her I’d be making such a huge deal out of it. However, before she could even get a chance to get her cheerleading career off the ground she falls short due to one accident….. I really want to put more, but I feel that if I do I will just pretty much give the story away and I would hate to ruin that for anyone. I do recommend that you go ahead and grab your copy of this book as honestly, this series is one to not miss out on. I’m looking forward to see what else that Addison can come up with.

I bought this book because my series of books, Mix Tapes and Stuff, Mix Tapes and Stolen Tests and Mix Tapes and Empty Buildings) took place in the 1980s. I wanted to see how we compared the times. When we write or read books that are dated in the past we tend to see cliches. The writer avoids them.
This book was like totally good.
She has so many pop-culture references without a lot of explaining each reference. The characters are typical of the time. The thoughts and feelings of each character, male and female were very authentic. She doesn't head hop when she writes, but we get scenes with each character that defines them.
The writing flowed and the story moved at a steady pace. Moore also put teen sex in this, which several of my editors told me to be careful of. Moore is honest about it. Teen hijinx and drugs are in there also.
This was an authentic and well done book.

It took me a good long while to get through Melt With You, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved all the nostalgia from the 80's and I think the author research or even life experience was spot on. It really brought back some great memories for me. As a child of this era, I find that some authors that try to write 80's style romance books just don't know how to capture the true essence of it. The only reason this is a three star read for me and not a four was the length. The book is too darn long and I felt there was too much-unneeded stuff left in it. I also have trouble with teenagers having sex like adults, this is unrealistic and especially in the 80's some of the phrases wouldn't have been uttered by teenagers. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a little flashback. It was good enough that I will read more of Addison Moore's books.
