I’d never thought this would happen. Where's my life headed? I loved L.A. Tri. My mom had to uproot my sister and me to a small city called Springville. College isn’t too bad, but I miss the mysteries I used to solve. It was one of the reasons for our move. Mom wanted me to have a typical college experience. However, I’m not sure how normal I can be with what has happened in my life. There's too much unexplained. The birthmark on my arm resembling a fox paw. Why do I have it? Visions my family claim were, waking dreams. Taking me away from L.A., wouldn’t change any of this. I’m grateful for Molly and Jenson. Without them, I probably would have ended up a loner. Now, I have to figure out where I belong in this new city and who I’m meant to be.

Angela K. Crandall was born in 1977 and grew up in the small town of Cadillac, Michigan. My first writing experience started in first grade, introduced as a way to express my emotions. I was encouraged by a teacher at a young age to begin writing stories. Then later was introduced to poetry in middle school. "The Dream inside the darkness, " my first release and a short story, was originally four pages long. I wrote it in first grade. I continued to work on it in high school and then college until May of 2013, when I picked it back up, hoping that I could resurrect it and bring it to life. I enjoy writing ghost stories that deal with paranormal elements and poetry. I want to embrace and explore other genres of writing in the future. I've considered writing children's books, fantasy novels, or biography in the future. Currently, I have three full-length novels in a series available Myth, Spirit Guide, and Seeking Justice. My stand-alone books include: "A Destiny of Light" and "Kenya." I also have a poetry book, "Social Suicide."

**I've received this book in exchange for an honest review**
It's been a long time since I couldn't finish a book. I hate it when it happens, and I really tried to finish this book, but just couldn't get past the fifty page mark and that was after struggling for over twenty pages. I didn't read the summary before it was given to me and I have to say, reading it after I gave up, I learned more about this book from that than in the first fifty pages. As far as I can tell this is a paranormal mystery, though neither were presented very well.

Let's start with the fact I felt like I had been thrown into the middle of a book. With the way events played out and how people accepted certain events, I felt like I only had the second half of a book. The main character, Starla, seems normal in the first few pages, but then she's attacked in her room by what she thinks are vampires, but has never met a vampire before. She's only seen them in movies. This is the first paranormal aspect that is shown to us and it felt very jarring. As this attack is happening, Starla shifts into a fox. This has never happened before, but even though she's panicking because of the attack and the shifting, she just up and accept what happens and run out of her home to her friend's house…who accepts what happens without issue. It's like this is a normal occurrence but it's clearly said it's never happened before. As events continue to unfold, this same confusion continues as the same acceptance happens over and over again.

To further the confusion, I didn't know anything about the characters that were introduced, but the way they were, it was as if they had been introduced before (but they weren't). I also was confused by Starla's age. At first I thought she was an adult as it was late and she was coming home from work right in the beginning. Then, you find out she's living with her mom and sister and they just moved to the area a few weeks back making you think she's more high school age. This is further reinforced by how she's treated by her mom and how Starla acts. But then you find out she's nineteen and in college. Nothing added up with this and it was really irritating.

The icing on the cake was the writing. It constantly jumped from Starla's POV to her mother's and I didn't like her mother's POV. It was too jarring and gave strange bits of information that only confused me more and otherwise felt irrelevant to read. And there were many times where in the middle of one person's POV in the middle of a passage it would switch heads and then switch back. I had to reread parts many times because of this until I realized it was a writing mistake.

From what I gathered in the fifty pages I read, this book is about Starla who has a secret heritage because of her dad that her mom is trying to keep from her as long as possible, which is why they moved because Starla's abilities were manifesting and she was using them to solve mysteries. By the time I stopped reading, her father suddenly showed back up in her life just as all this new life craziness has gone on, and he might be the cause of some of it.

If what I picked up is correct, then the story idea has promise, but this book needs a lot of work.

I've recently started reading a novel by Angela K. Crandall, "Myth". As of this review I have yet to have thoroughly finished it but I prefer to do my reviews as spoiler free as possible. I tend to lean more towards sci-fi/horror in my readings but this book is a page turner. As the tale of Starla begins it thrust you directly into the mysterious world in which she resides. At first, it seemed as though the tale had a "to fast to the point" build which I've seen in other books; like a firework of sorts. A quick ignition, a big "bang", and then a fade to fizzle. This story on the other hand keeps adding to the beginning opening bravado much like an opera. Each chapter adds more questions that keeps you delving deeper into this world. Even while running a fever I couldn't set the book down and in less than an hours time I've found myself 14 chapters in. That is when I decided to stop and write the review. I'm still going back to finish it but to know if I had read it all the way and did a review I would be compelled to ramble on about it potentially spoiling it for others. A reviewer shouldn't do that as the story is something each individual should experience on there own. I highly reccomend it as an amazing tale. Being as it's not my normal read I still found myself coming back to see what else Springville has in store for Starla. This being said, I'm giving this 4 stars because as an author you are always meant to broaden your horizons and hone your skills; 5 stars means that you've hit your pinnacle and as a writer it's both a blessing and a curse. The curse being that you've hit your ceiling and the only direction is to stay as is or to slip back down. Please everyone, this is an amazing story and I'm hoping everyone gives it a read.

This is a hard review. While I was hopeful after meeting the author that this would be a wonderful story, I was unfortunately let down by what has a great plot but so many mistakes. Times were mixed up, the same day would end and begin throwing reading off. The sentence and paragraph structure was so off I found myself rereading multiple times. Characters that were there, all of a sudden disappeared leaving the reader wondering where they went.
I had such a hard time reading this book that I actually put it down for several months before picking it back up again, and that is not like me. While the characters are in college, they're written like they should be attending Highschool. Feelings come out of nowhere and are unexpected. For instance, someone will be talking and it states they're yelling, and the atmosphere isn't justified for that emotion at the time.
Unfortunately, I can't recommend this book. I do see promise in the author if they get a new editor.

Imagine trying to fit into a new city. Anyone who has been through that knows how difficult it can be. Just when you were beginning to discover yourself! Add to that angst the discovery that there is something very unusual about you, something that will change the way you look at life forever.

This book is full of twists and surprises that one does not expect in a typical YA book. Without giving anything away, the diverse population of the setting gives new meaning to the word “diverse!”

Fast moving, and a fun read!
