“Forgiveness doesn’t erase her crime! If we ignore it… Then what is the point of the law?!” – “Inspector. There is no greater law than one’s conscience.”
Valjean, known as Mayor Madeleine, is doing all he can to help Fantine because he blames himself for all that she has suffered. But when his past comes back to haunt him, he must decide whether to protect himself or his people.
This volume details yet another key moment in Valjean's development and life, a real test of spirit: has he truly changed for the better or has all his philanthropy in the past years been just a show, hollow at its core? Is he ready to self-sacrifice? I think Takahiro Arai captured the conflict he feels over the Champmathieu case very well: you could really sense his inner turmoil. Even though he is in constant danger of slipping back into the man he was, there were some really cool visual clues to show the reader how he has become so much better than who he used to be. When defending Fantine to Javert, we see the lion-like beast he has been represented by in the more visually wacky sequences of the manga now as a shining, calm and stoic, noble animal instead of the raving, scary-looking beast it used to be. The hounds of Javert are now the ones foaming at the mouth, thirsty for the hunt. I like all that visual, symbolic animal stuff Takahiro Arai has added to these characters: they are good and artistically stunning visual depictions of the characters.
The court stuff is not my favorite, even though I, as I said, like what Valjean is going through in this part of the story. Another thing I really appreciated was the way Javert was depicted, not just visually (though he really is perfect - apart from the long hair, I don't know why but I cannot imagine a Javert with long hair, but that's just a me thing) but personality-wise. The author did some nice nods toward his future development in his dialogue with Valjean, which was a lot of fun. He is not an easy character - he represents a skewed sense of justice based only in law rather than human decency and empathy - and he is an antagonist to Valjean, but he is not just a villain. He is, indeed, one of the miserable ones. He is his own kind of victim of society while also being a perpetrator of violence and injustice. He is an interesting character and I think Takahiro Arai established his character really well in this volume.
Reading this series has been a delight so far. And I am so fucking pumped for the next volumes because they will get to my favorite parts of this story and introduce nearly all of my top favorite characters!
Akhirnya saya berhasil melalui "badai tragedi Fantine" yang selalu menjadi rintangan terbesar saya dalam menikmati Les Miserables dalam bentuk apapun (film musikal, konser, novel, maupun komik).
Yeeeessss!!
this is the one where enjolras shows up. arai made the pacing a little weird but i love the art + bonus points for drawing enjolras how hugo intended him to be (twink)
I condemn Javert more and more. Why cant he leave Valjean alone! In this manga, Javert is depicted as ferocious black dog, while Valjean is a noble white-haired lion. Cheers for the lion!
