According to the latest studies, the people of Lao came from china. They are considered to be the most ancient people in the south east of Asia. From the 2nd to the 5th century, the South Laos was under the control of the Chams. The Middle-Laos were probably colonized by Buddhist Indian Indonesians by then. The south of Laos was then ruled by the Khmers from the 6th century. The Khmers from Cambodia were the rulers of the region that is now Laos in the period between the 9th and the 13th century. Khmer realm collapsed, due to internal problems in the mid 13th century.
From the 13th century, the ancestors of the Laotians founded the Lang Xang Kingdom. The Lao Kingdom existed from the thirteenth century precisely 1357- 1707. It was later divided into three rival kingdoms of namely Champasak, Vientiane and Luang Prabang. This happened in the period between 1707 and 1779. It later fell to Siamese suzerainty in the period between 1779 and 1893 but it was reunified in the era of the French Protectorate of Laos, which was in 1893. It was ruled by the French colonial government until the year 1953. It is during this period that Modern state of Lao’s borders were established.
