After years of travelling for work, private assassin, Tobias Black is ready to plant some roots. When his sister’s mate offers the perfect solution, the powerful wolf shifter relocates to bear country. His first mission is to protect his new boss’ sister, but when he meets his mate, things get complicated.
Bear shifter, Layla Price, is sick and tired of men and their stupid macho games. She’s tall, thin and beautiful, but she’s also bold, confident and strong. Above all, she doesn’t need a man to take care of her, which doesn’t sit well with most men, especially shifters.
Tobias makes the ultimate sacrifice to keep Layla safe, but every decision has consequences, and spending nearly every hour of every day with the she-bear is enough to drive them both insane. When Layla insists she doesn’t need his help, Tobias works against the clock to finish the mission and protect his feisty mate.
This was like numerous other shifter reads I've come across. It had insta-love and no real character or plot development. Pretty blah throughout and nothing memorable for me. Not one I'd recommend. Glad it was offered as a kindleunlimited though.
I have read a lot of Ruby Shae and most of the plots are held together with floss and are constructed entirely out of projection but this book took it too far for me. They was really no reason that Tobias needed to lie to Layla. Also he knew that it was Danny so why didn’t he just kill him after the coffee shop meeting or after he found out all that bad stuff. There was no reason that she needed to be authentically angry or hurt I’m sure that Danny would still be a dick even if Layla was happy.
So I liked the story. I liked how they worked together to solve a problem. And I’m glad when the truth all came out, it was not overly angsty. Can’t wait to read the next one.
Author's Lesson: Apparently being a woman means you are to have Zero self esteem no matter how much of a bad ass you are. So horrendously sad. Wish I had never read this book.
We met Tobias in the Emerald Haven series when his sister Violet met her fated mate. Her mate Jase sent Tobias to join the Enforcer team in his old pack. Where he met his new boss and his sister. Who was his mate…now what?
Tobias Black, a wolf shifter, has just joined the bear security Enforcers team and as soon as he meets his boss's sister, he learns she's his mate. But she's receiving threats and he's responsible for investigating it so he fakes not being her mate so as not to distract either of them. Only she takes it as rejection and doesn't respond well. He blows hot and cold for a while, until she has no idea if she's good enough for him or not. But as soon as the villain is captured, Tobias has every intention of grovelling and winning back her trust.
Unfortunately, Tobias never grovels. And Layla, this supposedly bad ass, strong woman just brushes aside all that rejection in the name of her protection, after saying all along she didn't want to be protected, and just forgives him. And to make matters worse, although they'd spent the past several days in close contact, they never spoke, so they know nothing about each other. So, even knowing next to nothing about Tobias, when he says he loves her and wants to mate with her, immediately after admitting what he'd been doing, she's all for it. So this bad ass woman was really pretty much a doormat all along. Their sex was rather underwhelming too. What I really did like though was the build up...there was some great UST and angst as Tobias kept feeling guilt for his actions and Layla kept feeling terrible about being rejected. If it had led up to a fantastic grovel, it would have been perfect. But it led up to the heroine being a doormat instead.

This book features 2 characters that were mentioned in the other 2 books so we have an idea of who they are. I found that this book was the best by far. Shae really got into he groove with this novella. Tobias is an interesting character and he does make a sacrifice to make sure his mate was safe which is an excellent tool to use. Layla is a strong character who is targetted because of it. I feel like in out society of double standards that is something that a lot of stronger women have to deal with.
I liked the blurb but there are several reasons I didnt rate this as a 5 star. There wasnt hardly any romance in it. I mean normally her books have a little but honestly this had none. Then the fact that he didnt treat her well. Treated her like she had cooties most of the time and that he felt it was OK for him to constantly reject her and use her. I get him wanting to protect her but I think he could have done it a different way. Yeah they could have put off mating but he could have told her his plan and honestly Layla isnt stupid and she can act professional. There was no REASON for him to deny she was his mate. Ouch! Oh and then when she figures it all out...she doesnt even make him grovel or earn the right to mate her! Talk about weak and a little pathetic.
Ok...so yeah my review is sorta negative but there are some things I liked in it. I LIKED Tobias honestly I did. I also liked Layla. He was a great brother to Violet. I even saw a smidge of his sweetness when he saved Layla from being hit by the glass. He touched her cheek and that was a sweet moment. The story was good just aspects didnt make sense to me and I disliked how Tobias treated her and Layla forgiving him so easily.
I absolutely loved this book! Omg so worth the read.
This is Tobias and Layla's story and let me tell you it's quite a story. Tobias is a hybrid who also is a skilled assassin. Layla is a bear shifter who doesn't need a man to protect her she can take care of herself. Layla doesn't hold much hope on finding a mate check she'd settle just for a man strong enough to handle her in bed. Tobias just come into town to join the pack as an enforcer. When Layla shop is set on fire Tobias knows right away that she is his mate and so does she. So why is he pushing her away? Does he not want a strong mate like her? With someone after Layla her mate will do anything to protect her including not claiming her. How long will Layla put up with this carp can he convince Layla it was for her on good or will it be to late for them? I could tell you but I won't lol. Get your copy today to find out what happens. I loved this story I love this series. I hope for another one in this series. Loved the characters easy to relate to. Overall it's freaking awesome and did I mention the hot as sin sex scenes. No more get your own copy lol.
I enjoyed this 71 page short novella, currently Book Three of five in The Enforcers series. It is a quick read that covers all the bases without leaving a lot of holes or questions. It's also a standalone with an HEA. Tobias Black is a wolf shifter hybrid with the ability to conceal his scent, a trained assassin, and a desire to get into a job that will allow him to stay in one place. His brother in law recommends the bear shifter owned Price Security and he gets a probationary position with them. His first job is to protect the boss's sister, Layla, the owner of Java Corner. Layla is a 5'11" slim but fit woman who has a reputation for being able to take care of herself, which is just the way she likes it. She has been disappointed by men and when she recognizes her brother's new employee as her mate, she doesn't expect him to be any different, especially since he is blocking his scent and behaving like she's just another job. But Tobias knows that to keep Layla safe and to find the ones after her, he will have to keep her at a distance, which will be harder than anything he's ever done before. A KU library read.
Layla found her mate. But was it too late? The assassin had a job to do to prove to the alpha and her brother he was good enough. He didn't take kindly to someone threatening his mate. But Layla wasn't some helpless woman who couldn't take of her self. She was after all a bear shifter with mad skills. Would they finally get their HEA? Will they find her stalker? Get the book and find out. While you at it get the first two as well.
I choose this rating because Ms. Shea has done it again. Tobias and Layla make an awesome couple. I love a strong woman who isn't afraid of her power, y the same token I love aman who s secure enough to let his woman shine. Thank you Ruby can't wait for the next one.
This is a great couple . Most shifter stories have the lovers fighting against their mate in this case they both recognize it but he cannot take her until find who is threatening her. The fact family reactions will surprise you. This is one kickstand couple. And book. Do not miss them.
I liked the strong female character Layla. I didn't like that she was at times wishy washy with her confidence. Nor did I care for Tobias's game plan. He could have told her why he was acting like an ass. And. Trusted her to help him in his mission. He said he realize that she was strong so he should have trusted in her strength.
Layla and Tobias story was short. It was O.K., but not remarkable. Tobias is an Enforcer who happens to find his mate on his first mission, but he makes decisions that can affect him and his mate.
The author is creative and talented. The story has enough action, passion, and steamy romance with awesome characters. A must buy and keep them coming.
