Being a 12 year veteran in the web design industry and being in a similar space to Steve a) I still feel I have a lot to learn and b) I was intrigued to see what the competition was up to!

So, in answer to a) there is never just one right way to get to a solution in the world of web design and so yes, I did learn an awful lot from Steve. His approach is very customer focused. Especially in educating the DIY website enthusiast that it is not just about throwing together that looks acceptable from a visual perspective but that online marketing runs much much deeper. As the title suggests, building a good website is all about "PLAN"ning your approach and strategy and NOT diving straight into the build process.

Steve uses Plan Your Website to lay down customer expectations on all levels surrounding a website build, and encourages the reader to think about things like their target audience, customer journeys when someone lands on your website, time frames and associated costs. He uses the Time, Quality & Cost triangle/matrix which I quote to clients daily.

In terms of the book content;- I will forgive Steve a few typos because they are far outweighed by the value he presents inside the book, he has a very engaging writing style, which reflects his speaking style and general ethos for how he manages his business and clients. The visuals/diagrams Steve presents in the book are incredibly helpful and easy to digest (as well as on point).

So, we I to pick some potential holes, I would say that there is some technical content. I understand why Steve has added this content and, whilst this content is very well documented and explained, I do wonder whether this might create information overload to a novice, perhaps? But to be fair, if you don't understand Steve's explanations then perhaps you should reconsider attempting to build a website yourself and engage a professional web designer/developer to help. I was also concerned in the order that elements appear in the book, for example the branding and design chapter appears between the Content and Systems chapters. It would seem more logical to me for business functions, such as branding, to be dealt with first before embarking on building your website...if your brand isn't consistent then none of your marketing collateral will be.

Also, links to some of the testing tools in context would have been helpful. Steve is specific about tools for analytics but not for testing, perhaps the tools will appear in the workbook when it is ready.

Despite the minor points I've raised above I can't give the book anything else but 5 stars, overall Steve offers a brain dump of his many year's experience working in the industry and presents an interesting and very readable guide to what is a very technical and dry topic.

In terms of my answer to point b) I raised at the start, anyone would be lucky to work with Steve and Plan Your Website is a brilliant jumping off point.

Recommended book

I have no idea about how to open a website but after read this book I leaned few interesting things
Now I just need to follow the pdf work book and let's see how it goes.

Great read

Very informative, backed up strategies i have read in other books as well as outlining other strategies i had not thought of. Well worth a read
