I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

I liked outsiders. I didn't immensely enjoy it, I was too busy rolling my eyes at a lot of things but I do believe that around the end of the book, things started to actually become interesting and for that, I wouldn't mind reading the sequels.

The contemporary part of the story wasn't anything new. But the plot about the whole alien thing did pick up my interest.

I liked the diversity of the characters in the story. Jaylen is black and Michael is mixed. You don't see that a lot in the current YA books so it was a breath of fresh air. Also one of the characters was bisexual.

More than anything though, I liked the relationship between the main characters. It felt like something that could happen in real life, not something straight out of a fairy tale.

Now, the things that really bothered me throughout the book:

1. First of all.... there is insta love.

And as if insta love isn't bad on its own, the third party of the stories love triangle (yes, there is also a love triangle, what were you expecting?) also fell in love with Jaylen at first sight. And trying to sugarcoat it with the fact that they're aliens? Saying 'They fell in love with one glance, because they felt this very strong connection to each other. That connection is because they're aliens. Not cool.

2. How come Jaylen accepted that she's an alien so easily? I mean, yeah, she was different and all but not to the point of accepting such a fact in a heartbeat. I myself, am immune to cold and also smell blood. Sometimes when I wake up, there are scars and injuries on me that has appeared out of nowhere. Now, if my friend comes and tells me that I'm, what?, a werewolf-vampire hybrid, should I believe her?

3. When did exactly Indigo find out that Jaylen knows she's an alien? I mean, first she acted like she knows and Jaylen knows that she knows. Then it becomes apparent that she doesn't know or at least Jaylen doesn't know that she knows. Then she totally acts like she knows what's going on but Jaylen insists that she doesn't know.

4. What happened to those other aliens that Michael kept feeling their presence? I suppose that was Indigo but I'm not sure because it was never confirmed. Was I supposed to guess it all on my own?

Overall, like I said at first, it was a good book. If you're not as sensitive as I am to suh things, you'll definitely enjoy it a lot.

Normally I do a little recap of the novel but I'm going to skip that as I don't want to give any spoilers away for this book. You need to read it for yourself. It's just an awesome read. The author's writing is easy to follow and flows great. The way she wrote her characters make them feel real.

I love that the author wasn't afraid to make her character different. Jaylen is an atheist and I think it's fantastic to see that in a YA book. Most people skip that or just don't mention religion but this author put it right there for everyone to see. So if you don't like that, don't read. But you'll be missing out. Not everyone is a Christian and it's so wonderful to see diversity!

Speaking of diversity, Jaylen is African-American and that is great to see! We need more books like this! It's also a good book for the LGBT community because Indigo is bisexual.

Finally, the last thing I want to touch on is the sex scenes, pretty much all young adult books will skip over or give the smallest of details and it's always bothered me. I mean yes, I understand not wanting to let kids read that stuff but this is aimed at young adults. And most young adults are already exposed to all this. I mean come on, 16 and pregnant people!

I thought it was a nice balance, in no way was this book overloaded with sex, it fit perfectly with the story and you could see how much they loved each other. It wasn't some random hook up. Very tasteful.

More books should be like this! The risks this author takes and just how brave she is. Great job! Awesome sauce book and I just can't wait for more!

*I received an epub copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my review. All my opinion.

Stunning cover, not so stunning book. When it's a Paranormal book of course it has a lot of coolness, an action packed plot or creepinessbut turned out NOT ALL Paranormal books are like this. I tried liking this book but I failed. Outsiders is the first book that I read that has an alien concepts and I don't know if that affected my dislike of this book.

"I've never been religious. Never picked up the Bible to read a scripture. Never even prayed."

WHY I DID NOT ENJOY IT:

1. Insta-love! Can I escape insta-love for a few moments? It's annoying When Michael saw Jaylen he felt a "strong connection" to her and explained it that it's because of their alien abilities and blah blah. Everytime Michael says babe I cringe. The book is more focus to the romance than the action.

This feels uncomfortable. Whatever happened between the two of them definitely left behind a big blanket of tension. I like Indigo. She’s the first person I clicked with. But I really like Michael. I’m drawn to him. I met him only this morning, and already I look forward to seeing him and talking to him. I actually wish we could spend this time alone.

Indigo warned Jaylen about Michael but she didn't listen and instead daydreaming about him. UGH.

“And you’re beautiful. I would just ask you out, but I thought with you being the new girl and hearing of my so-called reputation, you might want to get to know me taking the strictly platonic route.”

AND ALL THAT CRAP

2. HATE the characters. I was just reading the book and I can feel it that I'll hate the characters especially Jaylen and Micahel and I was right. Really right. Jaylen was not a bad-ass character. The only like-worthy is probably Josh.

“Yeah, but I’m not considering all of them my friends. I’m not considering any of them my friends.”

(If I wrote this review in Bisaya I would literally say " EDI WOW.") I like characters who doesn't trust easily but Jaylen's situation is different.

3. The plot was a Gahhh. There wasn't a major action and fight scenes but there was a minor one which I didn't enjoy reading. I was only expecting a Paranormal and Young Adult air but then mixed genres came which made the plot dull. The Paranormal (and a bit of sci-fi) elements didn't work with the plot. It's more of a Contemporary book.

4. How Jaylen easily accepted that she's an alien? Well if someone said that I'm a vampire, I'm going to jump around, roll, goes hysterical, stress eating then accepts it. But when Michael said that she's an alien and Michael said all of this when they were on his room *eye roll*she only asked questions-and a sign that she accepted all of it easily.

5. Questions that are not answered like why and how do they feel connections. I know that because they're aliens but HOW. Are their ancestors aliens? Why can't they just go back to the "alien world"?

"Damn it. I should’ve just kept quiet. I’ve always been great at hiding most things about myself, but I almost always reveal that my brain unexplainably produces answers to things I didn’t know just seconds earlier."

And I would also love one . How do Jaylen's brain produces answer? I know there's a word that says UNEXPLAINABLE but surely there's some scientific reasons right?

Also this book is a cliffhanger.

There are only two things that I liked:

1. There's diversity. Jaylen's bestfriend is bisexual and was attracted to her. There was a black character, a mixed one, and a protagonist that's an Atheist.
2. The writing style was easy to read.

I received a physical copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. First of all, I’d like to thank the author for shipping the book to another continent for me. I’m happy I had the chance to read Outsiders!
It’s a young adult fantasy with elements of action and sci-fi. If I had to compare it to something, I’d say Twilight + I Am Number Four (but without the silliness and vampires). What I mean is the mysterious tone, the small town setting, new school, new girl, dark secrets, and romantic suspense. I loved Twilight for this, and I loved Outsiders just as much. The characters’ natural dialogue and realistic teenage personalities were very attractive, and I’d say that overall, the young adult aspect was bigger than the fantasy/action in this book. Something tells me that now that we know the characters and their situation, the following books will be more about their fantasy nature and adventure. The mystery of what they really are is still there by the end of the book.
The intrigue and suspense is there in every chapter, that’s why it was hard to put the book down, and I ended up reading past 2 am. The book is beautifully written and will make for a great YA read for the older reader. The first person/present tense style is difficult for many, but Tammy Ferebee managed to make it natural and flowing. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that I had absolutely no problem with, nothing annoying or irritating. I look forward to the next book of the series, and I recommend Outsiders to any fantasy fan, especially, if they’re into the YA genre.

My friend Temecka who blogs at Library of Tomes received a review copy of this and after talking to her about this book, I decided that it might be up my ally and I wanted to give it a shot. So, I contacted the author and got a review copy. Now to the review...

I had quite a few issues with this book, the main one being that it was really a just childish and full of teenage drama. For those of you that are keeping tabs on me, you know that I am trying to veer away from Young Adult literature because at this point in my life it just kind of pisses me off and I want to read something more mature. That being said, this book is kind of one of the reasons why I'm doing it. There was just so much unecessary drama, and I realize they are teeangers and teenagers are supposedly really extra, but I just can't take it anymore.

Plot wise, most of it felt like it wasn't headed anywhere. This book is like a combination between sci-fi and contemporary and that doesn't really work. The sci-fi elements honestly did not make any sense and just made the plot all the more unbelievable. I think if the sci-fi elements were gone, the plot would be much improved. That being said, I wasn't a fan of the plot for most of the book, but it definitely improved towards the end and caught my attention more. I can tell the series is headed in a direction with more action and a plot.

Now on to the characters... I didn't really like any of the main characters. I thought they were rash and infuriating teens, which as I have stated above, I am trying to avoid. They were so diverse though and I highly appreciate that. The main character was a female person of color who was an athesit, and I can identify with that, and I have never been able to identify with that before. Other characters were diverse too, being people of color or members of the LGBT community, and I think that it is amazing that the author included such a diverse array of characters. And the way she described them and portrayed them was really realistic and it is hard to get that.

As for the writing, it wasn't too special, but it was very realistic of how teenagers think and act and I appreciated that, even though, you know, teens annoy the hell out of me.

Overall I feel like I could like this series. The author has some things she can improve on and I can probably get over the whole teenager thing. I'm hoping she develops the sci-fi aspect of the book so that it makes more sense and doesn't make me want to roll my eyes.

Wow. Outsiders had me hooked from the very start. After finishing the Hush, Hush saga, I needed something to read. I saw Outsiders sitting there, so I began reading.

Jaylen really doesn't fit in, until she discovers that she isn't alone at her new school. She's always been different, but she finds others like her.

Outsiders is a great book. It really took my mind off reality, which has been a struggle for the past few days. I didn't stop reading until I finished.

Tammy Ferebee has set Outsiders in modern day US, but also managed to incorporate another race into it. I really loved Outsiders, and I can't wait to read more from Tammy Ferebee.

Who's curiosity isn't peeked by aliens??? So, this book is about Jaylen and her struggles with who she is and those around her. She knows she's not like your typical teen, what with her unexplainable abilities. She also struggles with losing the people she cares about. When she is transferred to a new school something very strange happens. She feels familiar with others that she knows nothing about! She is instantly drawn to two people, Michael and Indigo. As friendships (and maybe more) develop Jaylen feels stuck in the middle. Whose side should she take? When things escalate between the three someone will get burned. I really felt for Jaylen because she really tried to be a good friend, but sometimes people just have to mess things up. Michael was a really great guy and he did make me laugh a few times and go awwww during others. Indigo......I have no words to express my feeling to her. This was a really great read!! I highly recommend this book to a YA audience (most likely upper YA) and those who enjoy paranormal romances!!

I received a free ebook version of the book in exchange for an honest opinion, thank you Tammy Ferebee.
When I started reading this book, I was drawn by the mystery of it. Hated by animals? This sure must suck. It's 2 am now and I am really tired yet here I was finishing the book cause I really wanted to see what happens next. There were good parts and bad parts. I trusted some characters but they turned out to be the exact opposite. And what saddens me is that a new adventure starts in the end and the book finishes and I am sitting here blinking at my phone. I love the fact that the protagonist of the book is a girl with dark skin colour. I loved the characters, the plot. The story was great.

I really enjoyed this book! It captured me right from the start giving me a Lux series vibe that I loved! The characters were extremely diverse making this such a unique and fun read! I also loved the slang to the way the characters spoke. The only two issues I had with this book is towards the middle it felt a bit instalovey, and I wanted to see a little less contemporary and a little more of the scifi element of the book. That being said it was still a really good book! I do plan to put a full spoiler free review of this book up on my channel soon!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~ I received an autographed first edition copy of OUTSIDERS from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is a new release book. It was only released on September 25, 2015.

Jaylen Hayes may be a seventeen year old girl, but she has always known that she is somehow different from other girls her age.

Being super-smart certainly doesn't help her feel like a typical teenager. Throw in the fact that Jaylen never gets sick, wild animals seem to hate her and the fact that she has an unknown medical condition which requires her to have access to drinking water at all times and readers can easily understand why Jaylen feels like she doesn't fit in.

Forced to relocate and change schools in the middle of her senior year, Jaylen starts at a private Catholic school that is vastly different from any school she has ever attended.

She has never emotionally connected with any of her peers, so she is understandably shocked when she meets not one, but two people she feels instantly drawn to.

As the story progresses the reader learns more about Jaylen and is also introduced to Michael and Indigo.

I do not want to give away the story but I will say that Jaylen does finally discover exactly why she has always felt like an outsider. She also figures out the reason that she felt so instantly comfortable around Michael and Indigo.

Even though this book is a tale of Jaylen's search for self-identity, it is also so much more.

I did not mention in my synopsis that Jaylen is black (or African American if you prefer the politically correct term). Michael is a mixture - he has a black mother and a white (Caucasian) father and Indigo is Latino. This mixture of races is actually more realistic than when you read a novel where all the characters are one race. The world today is a "melting pot" of colours, races and cultures and it is unfortunate that more books do not reflect the wonderful diversity of our current society.

Chapter One begins with Jaylen describing her beliefs. She states: "I've never been religious. Never picked up the Bible to read a scripture. Never even prayed." This actually surprised me. It is rare that an author so blatantly admits that a novel's main character is an atheist. I think Tammy Ferebee is very brave. Religion seems to be a subject that most authors (especially Young Adult authors) shy away from. However, I understand why religion in fiction is generally avoided. In my opinion this avoidance stems from fear and/or from an eye towards mass commercial appeal. Why do I say that? Well, if you are an extremely religious person and while looking for a book to buy, you pick up a book that starts out the way this one does, you may never read past that first paragraph. I believe that most publishers would have asked Tammy Ferebee to exclude information about Jaylen's beliefs before agreeing to publish "Outsiders". I think they would be concerned that they could lose potential sales by having this information included. That is why I say that I believe Tammy Ferebee is brave. In fact, I actually admire her for the fact that she chose story purity over commercial profitability. Good for her.

Still on the topic of religion in "Outsiders" the novel, I think that it is important to include this topic in Young Adult fiction because most young adult fiction readers are not often exposed to religious ideologies other than their own family beliefs. I was trying to think back over all the YA books I have read and I cannot think of a single one in which the main character was a professed atheist. Kudos again to the author for incorporating this topic into her writing.

Fiction is a vehicle for young adults to attempt to relate to the characters and to escape their own lives for a while. It is also a vehicle for them to learn about the lives of others. In addition, it is a safe and secure way to learn about topics that may interest them, but that they do not feel comfortable discussing with others.

Jaylen has moved from New Jersey to Virginia. The school she had previously attended was a large public high school and her new school is a private Catholic school. She has never been exposed to a school setting where the majority of the teachers are nuns and the Lord's Prayer is recited every morning. Imagine how different and out-of-place she must feel. How does an atheist fit in at a Catholic school? I think just about every person can relate to the feeling of being out of their element, especially young adults.

Another aspect of this book that I was thrilled with was the socioeconomic aspects of the story. Unfortunately, several of the YA books I have read that feature black leading characters have also included the typical, fictional black stereotype of low income being the norm. This is not the case in reality and it is nice to read about a black girl who comes from a high income background and whose challenges do not have anything to do with poverty, drugs or gangs. Again, I give kudos to Tammy Ferebee for not falling into the trap of writing two dimensional and stereotypical characters.

In the Young Adult genre I rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ For the reasons I have listed above as well as for pure enjoyment and escapism, I highly recommend OUTSIDERS to anyone who enjoys Young Adult fiction with great characters, lots of twists and turns with a science fiction flair.

The ending of this book leaves an opening for the story to continue in a second book. I will definitely be on the lookout for it and will be adding it to my "To Read" list.

2.5 stars.

I was expecting to really like Tammy Ferebee's Outsiders. The description sounded really interesting and I was excited to read a book that held a number of diverse main characters.

BUT...

I just wasn't into it. I really did love the story line and premise. I think it is a really strong debut novel. But, the whole thing just didn't do it for me. I thought the pacing was out of wack. It wasn't until around 65-70% into the novel that anything started happening. Up until that point it was just character development. Which I usually wouldn't mind, but I just felt like the romance portion of the story overshadowed everything else and I just don't like it when that happens. I think romance should compliment a book and it's characters. I don't want to read 75 pages of a teenage girl's thoughts about how great her boyfriend is and how she's never felt this way before. It's just irritating.

Even though I did enjoy the plot, I thought the mystery portion of the story was quite transparent. I knew exactly which character it was that was going to turn vengeful. I kept reading to see what exactly was going to happen, but I wasn't surprised or shocked when it did.

Also, some of the religious stuff throughout the book rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't really like how some of the characters reacted when the main character, Jaylen, told them she doesn't believe in God. I also thought it was interesting that aliens believed in the Christian version of God. Seemed a little ironic to me but raised an interesting set of questions to the readers.

Overall, I am REALLY excited to see what else Tammy Ferebee has in store for us. I did enjoy her writing and think that I will enjoy her writing more and more once she has some more books out. I will definitely keep my eyes open for any new Ferebee books!! I think her voice and characters are desperately needed in the YA and Sci-fi/Fantasy genres. Even though I have been fairly critical of this book, I am very much a fan of Tammy Ferebee's. I know it is early in her career and I desperately hope she will continue writing YA fantasy and Sci-Fi with characters who's voices are not always told.

Here is my full review on this book. I have updated it since I read it, but my feelings have not changed: http://libraryoftomes.blogspot.com/20...

**4.5
I actually LOVE the use of the creature of this book. It's hard for me to find a book with this focus that I like. I didn't feel like it took from any other plots;however, I feel like there were some things that I felt like needed to be answered that were kind of pushed aside. I didn't like the usage of modern pop culture (aka the walking dead and modern music). I just felt like this made the book kinda meh. It just left me feeling like the book would seem older than it was in the future. The diversity in this story was amazing! I loved how the main character in particular was black. I loved it so much. I also felt like the way the author went about having some really deep conversations about religion and dress code were really well done. Also an atheist protagonist in YA?! And the use of sex?! Perfect. So beautiful. I have never read anything like this is before and I feel like this book will turn into a series that will continue to out do itself. This book was so close to a 5 star read, but I felt like because there were some things that were left unanswered I can only give it 4.5. This book is beautiful though and I suggest everyone reading it!

Well I am literally lost for words. I have just finished this novel and now I have to attempt to organised all my crazy thoughts and emotions into writing a great review - because it was literally that brilliant! When I first found Tammy and learnt a bit more about her novel, Outsiders through a video she posted on her YouTube channel explaining the book and reading the blurb so that we could have somewhat of an idea as to what it was about. I am literally so glad that I found her because this book had me pining for more and more. Basically I couldn't handle not reading it, so I did everything that was required to have the house clean and everyone fed so that I could lock myself away in my bedroom, sit down on the bed and binge read until the end. It was only a few moments ago that I finally came back to civilisation and realise that Jaylen and Michael were just fictional characters and there's no such thing as aliens with super powers (well you never know, I might actually believe that) and so here I am - back to my own life where I am suffering through a major book hangover, drinking tea and writing this review.

Jaylen Hayes doesn't feel like she belongs anywhere especially since her mother's passing. Jaylen moves in with Ms. Ward for the remaining five months of her senior year. Yet when Jaylen enters Trinity for the first time, she realizes that she's not alone after all. Meeting Indigo and Michael Reed changes everything for Jaylen. Jaylen feels a level of comfort she's not experience for a long time. Michael becomes very important to Jaylen in a very short time. But Indigo makes Jaylen uncomfortable as time goes on. What does Indigo feel for Jaylen? Why is Jaylen so comfortable with Michael? Your answers await you in Outsiders.

This new to me author really hit all my paranormal and science fiction buttons with this story. The characters and story were flawed, raw, gritty, unique, compelling, real, honest, and complex. I've not read many books like this or had this unique concept either. Leave your expectations behind and simply enjoy this book for all it's worth. Looking forward to more from this author in the future.

I was sent this for free in exchange for an honest review. This book started off very mysterious, making me want to know what this crazy medical condition the main character has, and wanting to know what the weird vibes were that she kept thinking about. I don't want to say what book series this reminded me off because it would ruin the mystery. But it was amazing, never boring, easy to read, & very few typo's. It was different, unique and kept me interested from start to finish. I felt very deeply for Jaylen, Michael, and Indigo. I thought it was a bold move from the author that the main character is an atheist African american, but Jaylen proved religion doesn't define the good in people. All of the characters were diverse and enjoyable. I recommend grabbing this before book 2 comes out! I can't wait!

This is one of the annoying boring books I have read. There is absolute nothing compelling about this story. The characters are weak, the plot is weak, and even the romance is weak. Yeah, there is a little action here and there, but it doesn't affect the plot or pacing. It is like an action scene happened, instead of characters figuring things out or even reacting to it, they go back to their boring life like nothing happened. Man, i am grateful that I only paid a dollar for this book. If I had paid more I would be piss off.

WARNING: This review contains spoilers, so read at your own risk there, fam. Also, swearing. Lots of it.

I'd like to send a giant (seriously, like, the size of the universe), long overdue (no joke) thank you to Tammy Ferebee, the author of this wonderful book, for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review. Honestly, thank you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Now, to be honest, I don't even know how or where to start. Like, I just... Okay.

THE FUCKING GOOD:

1. THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE:

The thing that I loved most about reading Outsiders was that, for the first time in a long time, I could actually feel the amount of effort that was put into the novel itself. I could actually feel the love and dedication and hardship that goes with the daunting task of writing a novel. Of baring your soul on the page.

That's what it was. Soul. This book has soul carefully threaded into its pages, like the author actually cared more about what she was putting to paper than the amount of dollars it would make on shelves.

I like that shit. Outsiders has tons of it .

2. THE WRITING:

The writing was another thing I enjoyed. I think that part of the reason why I was taking so long to read this book is because I was just too busy soaking it all in and didn't want it to end. As I said earlier, while reading, I felt as if I could feel a good piece of the author's soul within the pages of the novel itself through the writing.

I really have no way to describe it other than simply being pulled in, mesmerized. The characters felt as real as any person I know; their emotions came off the page, the way the characters' individual relationships with each other grew felt genuine instead of rushed, like some books. The dialogue was realistic for a bunch of high schoolers, too.

I did find a few extra or misspelled words, as well as some grammar mistakes. But, they were so few and far between that I honestly forget when or where they occur in the novel.

3. THAT FUCKING AWESOME MC:

Jaylen motherfucking Hayes is by far one of my most favourite leading ladies to date. Definitely in my top ladies with Johanna Morrigan from How to Build a Girl and The Grisha Trilogy's Alina Starkov, among others. She's not a fucking idiot by any means. This girl has a HEAD on her shoulders and a BRAIN inside of it that she actually uses and I love it.

4. CHARACTER DIVERSITY:

Did I mention that our fucking awesome MC is also African-American? Not only that, but so is Michael, our love interest. I honestly can't remember the last time I read a novel that did not feature an all-white cast of characters. I really can't, and that really is a crying fucking shame, because our planet is filled with so many different races, cultures, nationalities and what-have-you and basically 98% (99%? I'm not good at math) of them just don't seem to be represented enough. It's so damn nice to see some real racial representation, for once.

5. WAIT, RELIGION?:

Before anybody says anything (and this is more just a personal thing than anything else), I'm not very religious by any means whatsoever. However, I did go to a Catholic elementary school as well as a Catholic high school when I was growing up. I'm not a good Catholic at all. I remember the prayers, yes, but I can barely stumble my way through the parts of the Mass. I mean, it's been years since I last went to church.

That being said, when I realized that the new high school Jaylen was going to be attending was in fact a Catholic school, that kind of brought me back a little. It faintly reminded me of my own high school days. Also, usually unless the book is sold as a religion-inspired book, nine times out of ten, world religions are hard to come by in YA. Even a larger one like Catholicism/Christianity. At least, that's what I've found, but maybe I'm just not finding those books very often. So, it was kind of a refreshing change of pace and a little bit nostalgic to see this.

(As a side note for anyone who may be wondering, this book is not all "praise God and love Jesus" for 332 pages. Not even close.)

6. FUCK YEAH, EXTRATERRESTRIALS:

Our beloved Jaylen and Michael, as well as Indigo, the third member of our beloved trio, are not human. They each are very attuned to each other's presence, i.e., they can physically feel each other's presence and that feeling can have affects on their bodies as well. Not to mention, they each have an incredible healing rate with no scars left behind, and they constantly have to stay hydrated in order to make sure they stay alive (like, more than your doctor's recommended daily water intake). They even have some special abilities, such as Michael's telekinesis and Indigo's invisibility.

7. FUCKING INDIGO.

I suppose you could say Indigo is our antagonist, and I almost want to say that she was written a little too well. I loved her, I hated her. I wanted both to hug her, and punch her in the face simultaneously. There were so many times when I found myself saying (or screaming), "FUCKING INDIGO!" and I'd want to throw the book across the room.

I actually think I might have, once.

She infuriates me so, but I still so, so love her. Not to mention, she's a bit of a bad bitch, let's be serious. I think she actually might be my favourite character from this book.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD (Or rather, 'things that weren't totally bad but still kind of bugged me'):

1. ROMANCE FUEL:

The plotline mostly revolves around Jaylen and Michael's relationship, how it grows and the turmoils they go through. However, while the romance fuels the plotline, it's not in a totally overwhelming way. I'm not usually one for books with these kinds of plot lines, but this time around, it felt kind of different. I mean, it still bugged me, but nowhere near enough to make me put the book down. But, maybe that's because I fucking loved that twist.

THE BAD:

THE FACT THAT THIS BOOK IS NOT AVAILABLE IN STORES FOR EVERYONE TO BUY

Seriously. If you can get your hands on a copy, I suggest you do so. This book will take you on a ride of emotions. The characters will stay with you long after you've finished reading, and it's a story you won't forget.

I can't wait for a second book. I want to know what happens next.

I really wasn't intending on doing this review in a list format but, whatever works, I guess. I honestly enjoyed this book so much. It's the first book I've ever received in exchange for review, and it holds a very special place in my heart.

Now, I just have to hold my breath and hope my manager doesn't mangle it while I let her borrow it.

I found Outsiders to be quite an interesting book. I utterly enjoyed reading this book and finished it in a matte of days…that is how good it was.

The main character is Jaylen Hayes. Jaylen has always felt different in her home town. She knows the answers to any question without ever knowing how she got to the answer, is hated by animals and just feels different from everybody around her. It was when she entered Trinity High that she felt something. She automatically felt drawn towards two students, Indigo and Michael. She felt comfortable around them. She knows they are different to but she does not know why…or how.

I absolutely loved reading this book. I loved how the author made it modern to fit today’s society. It had modern day slang and everything! I don’t see that much in YA literature, or at least the ones I’ve read. It was refreshing and different and a good thing about this book. I loved how the author incorporated world problems of today into this novel, without it ever sounding out of place. She ever so intelligently mixed it in the dialogue in this book. She points out body image, people trying to change themselves, and many more topics. I loved it! She also added bits of LGBT which I thought was clever and something that took a lot of courage because again, its not something everyone is comfortable with reading or writing about. Also, it is something not a lot of people have written about.

Another thing I Really loved about this books are the characters. They were all so different and well written. Every character had his or her own story to tell, values, and personality. My favorite character hands down was Jaylen. First of all, she is a colored character; which I haven’t seen much in YA literature and she is badass! I loved they way she thought, the ideas she valued, her strength, her individuality, her personality and her story. Each character was different and provided the story with so much color! Loved it!

Let’s talk about the romance in this book. It was swoon worthy. I don’t believe the love in this book was insta-love. But the romance made me swoon and blush and omg. It was sooo cute at some points and made me teary eyed. It felt like real love and I just loved how it felt so real with the characters.

I actually loved Tammy’s writing. It was easy to read and easy to follow and had modern day slang. The Beginning of the book was good. It made me want to read more and find out about the characters and what she felt with Indigo and Michael. There were many twists and turns that I did not even see coming. It was jawdropping! The pace of this book in the beginning was good, but then, towards the middle, it was a little rushed and sometimes dull which made it kinda…eh. But then, towards the middle-endish, things got serious! THAT is when I picked the book up an finished it in one sitting! I swear…this book killed me in many places. Multiple times. But I resurrected just to finish the book. Hehhe. There was this one scene in the book that made me cry…just a heads up. It picked up at a good point and did not go back down until the end, which left me kinda satisfied ….because I want to know what happens next! The ending was sort of a cliffhanger and left me shocked and angry and OMG WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT! AHHHH! Sorry…freaked out there. Anyhow, I really liked this book.

All in all, I felt this book is read worthy. It was satisfying and a really good read. I only felt that the book got a little dull in the middle-ish which was kind of upsetting, but don’t let that stop you from reading the book! I promise, you, it is really good and unique. I loved the storyline, characters, romance and kind of the ending. I hope there is more to this story because I seriously want to read it. I want to know what happens next. So pick up this book and start reading!!

*I received a pdf copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my review. All my opinion.

First off, I want to thank the author for allowing me to read this wonderful book!

In my book reviews I normally start off with a synopsis of the book I read, but this is the type of book that is so much better when you go into it blind.

At first, the beginning of the book dragged a little for me, so I had to take a break from it for a few months. After I took a break from it for a couple of months and got closer to the middle of the book, I instantly got hooked and couldn't put my iPad down. When I started reading it again I read it in only a day.

This book is a YA contemporary with a really cute romance that you constantly are pulling for, aspects of Sci-fi and fantasy, and tons of mystery and suspense. Through out the book there were so many moments that made my heart drop to my stomach because of the suspense and there were also heart wrenching moments that shocked me and made me feel the loss and heartbreak the characters felt. This book was never predictable and I was constantly surprised by how the events ended up happening and I constantly was on the edge of my seat to find out what would happen next.

In this book, the protagonist Jaylen never felt like she belonged and always felt different from the people around her. When she starts going to Trinity, she meets overbearing Indigo and dreamy eyed Michael who are just like her and she finally feels like she belongs somewhere and doesn't feel like such a freak of nature anymore.

When Jaylen finds out why she is so different and what she is, she automatically accepts it and doesn't freak out very much. If I found out I was anything other than a human, I probably would have a moment of denial, before I either cried or had a panic attack. The fact that Jaylen never really freaked out about what she was made Jaylen's character not as relatable for me.

However, I do appreciate how Tammy Ferebee doesn't use cliches that are normally used in most movies and books about the thing/creature that Jaylen is.

The characters in this book were well developed and I really appreciated Tammy Ferebee including characters that were very unique and were the minority. Jaylen is an atheist who is attending a Catholic School. I love the diversity aspect of this book! Most authors shy away from the whole religion aspect in books, but Tammy Ferebee shows that not everyone is Christian or believes in the same things through the characterization of the characters. The protagonist in this story, Jayden is African-American which is different from what we normally see in books. That could have been enough diversity in one book, but there is also an LGBTQ+ aspect to it as well. Diversity being included in this book really makes this book more realistic and relatable.

I wish the ending didn't end the way it did. I thought the book should have at least two more chapters of the book left, but it just ended abruptly. The characters didn't even solve the central conflict or even decide what they were going to about it before the book ended. I just wanted to scream "What happened?". I heard that there is going to be a sequel, which I am beyond ecstatic about, but I can't believe I have to wait so long to find out what happens next.

Overall, this was an amazing book not only about aspects of fantasy and love, but also about real life issues. I can't wait to read the sequel and I am so glad I got a copy from the author to review! I definitely recommend this book to everyone!

Spoiler Free Review: It's best going in to this book blind, so STOP READING REVIEWS RIGHT NOW! (after this one of course!) The world is dark and full of spoilers.

This book was super interesting and intriguing at the beginning, it really pulls you right in to the characters' world. After a couple of chapters though, the cringing starts. Lines the characters say, things they do, just little things that were unbelievable or just plain awkward. Unfortunately, these things made me stop thinking of the characters as real people, and instead as characters following plot events designed to force the book in a certain direction. This is my biggest pet peeve in books, as it stops me getting absorbed in to the characters' world and living in the book.

Towards the end the book started to pick up again, however the ending had me rolling my eyes due to another plot point.

Overall, Outsiders is a quick easy read if you want something to kill a few hours or need a holiday read. I won't be continuing with the series.

First off I really need to applaud this book for how greatly diverse it is. The main character is a black. The other two main characters are mixed and Dominican. This book felt really real for me. This is the type of ethnic environment I grew up in.The language used felt appropriate. I don’t ever see this in books of this genre.

The book also had some religious diversity. When I heard that the main character was an Atheist I immediately wanted to read this.I have not read enough books with an atheist main character. I’ve read books where religion is unmentioned by the main character, but not ones where they discuss being atheist. Jaylen is also surrounded by religious character as she has to enroll in a Catholic school.I loved seeing her have to interact with religious people because it wasn’t a big deal. Interfaith friendships and relationships happen don’t have to be difficult to have.

The story felt like it could have been kind of just a contemporary story about a girl that is forced to go to a new school after something unfortunate, makes new friends, gets a love interest, and a possible enemy. Except then you add in the fact that the girl is special. She has abilities that aren’t like other people but doesn’t know what she is. I really enjoyed the sci-fi elements of this story. I was able to figure out some of it, but was completely surprised by some of it as well. I did wish that we were able to get a bit more on it, though.

Teen angst can be a draining thing to read depending on how it's written.Jaylen’s POV definitely wasn’t an exception to that for me. It felt different than in some other books that have this issue for me, but there were definite points in the book where I just wanted to get through to something else.

I also was not feeling the connection Jaylen and Michael enough. I really wanted to but it wasn’t fully there for me yet.It may have just been the pace of it. It isn’t instalove, but I still didn’t feel it work enough for them to go to the lengths they do.

Sometimes Michael would be a little frustrating to read. I felt like the way he did things was realistic, but I he just frustrated me a lot at certain points. I wasn’t really a fan of his character from the beginning and nothing in his dialogue made me care for him ever. I liked Josh, and Ayana more even though they are side characters we don't see too much of.

At the end, there are just enough questions unanswered to leave you wanting more.I’m ready to learn more about what Jaylen is. Among a few other things. I won’t mention because it would be spoiling. I will say that I’m intrigued by the conflict that is set up in the end of all this, though. I also definitely think that I will continue with the series when the next book is released.

**I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

Jaylen's life changes when she starts attending Trinity High. Her expectations for a church school go out the window when she meets Indigo. She feels a connection to Indigo unlike anything she's ever felt for anyone else. A sense of belonging. Indigo and Jaylen instantly become friends. But Indigo isn't the only person Jaylen feels a connection to. Her connection to Michael is just as strong if not stronger than her pull to Indigo. But there's clearly some bad blood between Michael and Indigo and Jaylen doesn't know who to believe.

This was a fun, fast read. The plot moved smoothly and there was never a time when I felt like putting the book down. If there's anything I love it's relationships like Jaylen and Michael. Heartbreaking and heart warming at the same time! I love the idea of the whole "pretending to be human but really we aren't" thing, but I feel like it wasn't played up as much as it could have been. There was a whole opportunity to explore the culture and to ask questions, but the book focused more on human stuff with a few scattered tidbits of other-worldliness. Of course, that might just be because it's the first book, so it's developing the characters and all the information about the "other species" will be in future books, but I would have enjoyed just a little bit more of it in Outsiders.

I love the incorporation of LGBTQA+. You don't see that a lot in books, especially in the case where all the character seemed really chill about it instead of being flabbergasted. But even so Indigo made me quite mad at times and by the end of the book I was thoroughly convinced that she's slightly mentally unstable. Michael was by far my favourite character. He just seemed so at ease all the time and every scene with him and Jaylen together just made me want more. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to get my hands on book 2 when it comes out!

Outsiders (Outsiders #1) by Tammy Ferebee
I received an ebook copy of this book for a honest review.
Summary:
Being a teenager in senior year of high school is hard enough trying being from another world. Jaylen has suffered a family tragedy and feels lost and alone. Things are about to change in a big way for her, when she walks into first period at Trinity High and starts to actual feel a connection to others. First, she meets the beautiful but very mysterious Indigo, who quickly becomes her best friend? Second, she connects with the handsome and funny Michael who she knows for some reason she will not be able to live without. Will Jaylen find out why she finally feels a connection to these two teenagers? What is it with all the water? Final, what is the beef between Indigo and Michael?
Characters:
Jaylen, a teenager who lost the most important person in her life.
Indigo, a beautiful mystery of a teenager. She wants to feel a connection to another but at what cost.
Michael, handsome, funny, and smart what is there not to love about this guy. (book boyfriend)
Kennedy, Warren, Eugene, other students at Trinity
Ms. Reed, Michael's mom, who will protect what is most dear to her heart.
Ms. Ward, Jaylen's foster mother. Loves Jaylen as if she were her actually daughter.

Quote:
We already feel like Outsiders. Sh*t we are Outsiders.

Final Thoughts:
Love the diversity of the characters not something you see a lot in YA novels.
The beginning of the novel was a little slow and not a lot of originality. When the truth came out the book picked up speed fast and the story become highly original and hard to put down. Loved the ending. Can not wait for the sequel. What happens in Jersey????
Recommend for YA paranormal romance fans.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Jaylen’s always known she’s different. Moving to a new town, she finds others like her, and hopes they can tell her what she is exactly.

Outsiders was a young adult paranormal romance, though this book lovingly waltzed the line of a few genres.

This was a refreshingly diverse book. At times it was a little too in-your-face with it, but only in the first few chapters until everyone was introduced.
The writing style was very easy to follow; and for a YA book light on the teen angst. It does contain insta love, but given the plot this is perfectly justified and just adds to the intrigue.

The main character wasn’t prone to emotional outbursts, so some of the reactions I would have expected from shocking news never eventuated. At times it felt a little too casual for the sort of revelations Jaylen was being dealt, somehow lessening their significance. The main twist and mysterious past were revealed early on in the story line, without the usual dragging out of carefully doled titbits. Again, these moments were played down, so the usual drama found in these books was a lot smoother and less accentuated.
I loved the side characters, and wish we could have seen a little more from them.

The book lost stars for me because of the dialogue, which made up a large portion of the content. To me it didn’t always seem authentic, and there were inconsistencies with the characters across different scenes.
The end conflict also left me confused. Without saying too much, it escalated rather quickly, and the agreed course of reparation was illogical and somewhat insane.

That being said, it was still a highly enjoyable book, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

I’m a subbie on this author’s YouTube channel which is how I found out about this book. I was a little apprehensive about reading it because I wasn’t sure if I’d like it. I’m not a fan of scifi. The author mentioned that it wasn’t hard scifi, but I still wasn’t sure. Anyway this was a really fun book. I loved the alien/extraterrestrials in the book. Could you imagine animals always wanting to kill you? OMG crazy to think about. Anyway these were the most realistic teens ever, and fascinating because of their powers. I loved the mix of races and the pop references that really helped make the characters that much more real. The plot surprises were exciting. The love triangle was unique to me. I’ve never read about a guy and a girl wanting the same girl. That was kind of hot. I really loved the romance between Jaylen and Michael. OMG Michael is sooooooooooooooooooooo sweet. I was rooting for him from the beginning. I’m so excited for the sequel. I am a Michigander so the mention of Michigan excited me so much. Jaylen is right, the water has gotten pretty dirty over the years but come up here anyway. It hasn’t killed me yet hehe. I hope the sequel takes place here. I’m so ready for more of these characters. Kill off Indigo so I can read a whole book of Jaylen and Michael without her shit.

**Review update- I can’t believe I forgot to mention the diversity of the characters. The author really created enough diversity for everyone to find themselves or at least their friend hehe. There were also positive messages for young women in the book too. I loved this book so much:)

My reaction for this book from beginning to end kinda summed up in one gif

When I first started reading this I would kinda zone out because it didnt catch my attention like I expected it to but I can honestly say once I got over the first few chapters I was all in like

There were a lot of secrets and shit 'being said without being said' and moments were I was confused like with the whole situation with Indigo knowing or not knowing if Jaylen was like her and during times when Jaylen would talk about her mom when she meant her foster mom and vice versa and I'm just like

Got to the end and I'm all

because I didnt want it to end and now I have to wait to see what happens now. Whats up with Indigo's aunt. What's gonna happen with Kennedy and Ethan.
All in all I really enjoyed this book and I enjoyed reading about Jaylen and Michael because they were so cute. I loved their friendship. I loved his relationship with his mom I would most definitely read more by this author.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I just couldn’t get into this. I tried, and I kept reading, thinking that with another chapter or two I’d finally make a connection to at least one of the characters. Unfortunately, I didn’t.

The plot moves a bit too slowly for my taste. I anticipated it being more about what exactly Jaylen is, but that actually seems to more of a sideline. The main part of the plot focuses on typical high school drama. The only difference is that these characters aren’t exactly human. But even that isn’t revealed until a fourth of the way through the book, and when it is it’s very anti-climactic.

I felt that the characters had personalities that were nearly indistinguishable from one another. I understand the immediate bond between Michael and Jaylen, but I don’t understand anything more than that. His personality seems just the same as everyone else’s, and hers doesn’t seem like anything special either.

All in all, this seemed like page after page of teenagers talking about mundane things and going to dances. Yes, there’s a character who jumps a little bit on the crazy train, but as I never became invested in the outcome of the characters, I couldn’t bring myself to care very much.

Final Rating: 1.5 stars

I was given this book for free by the author and it did not influence my review in any way.

Let me just say, from the beginning of this book, I was hooked! The plot and the storyline moved quickly and kept me entertained. I told myself over and over as I read this book, that it reminded me of the TV show Roswell, that I was hopelessly addicted to. I think I've found myself addicted to this storyline as well.

Reading along Jaylen's story, I found myself always trying to guess what she was going to do next. I loved the developement in her character and I loved how some of her relationships grew throughout the story, instead of stayint stagnant like they sometimes do in books.I'm not going to lie, it did take me a while before I figured out what Jaelyn was, but I was so involved in the story and wondering why she had the somewhat magical powers, and her confrontations, that I didn't even reaize it.

I was never a fan of Indigo's and I am very intrigued as to where the story is going to take everyone next. I did really enjoy Kennedy's character! I was sad to see the story end and am eagerly awaiting the announcement of a second book.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review, and I will be more than happy to give one. My full review of Outsiders will be available shortly on my blog, www.myquietponderings.wordpress.com

Firstly, I was more than impressed at Tammy Ferebee's writing style in her novel. Hooked at the first page, I finished the book in only a few days. I really appreciated how diverse her characters were and how engaged I became in their well being.

There was a point in the novel, I believe, when all the characters were happy and I knew that something terrible was about to happen. Like the calm before the storm. Sure enough, I was right! I've never wanted to be wrong so badly. Finally all my friends were happy and then BAM! I read feverishly to see what would happen next.

Overall, I really enjoyed Outsiders! I will definitely be reading the sequels. Fair warning, there were a few steamy scenes, but nothing too graphic. A big thank you to Tammy Ferebee for allowing me to review her book! I highly recommend it to all young adult readers!

Okay so I'm going to be extremely blunt here... I did NOT finish this book. I hate when this happens, which is very rare by the way. I HATE not being able to get through a book, it sucks.

NOW this didn't happen because the book was bad or full of awful things, this was simply because it wasn't good to me. I'm thinking it might be time to venture away from my ever so awesome Young Adult genre because lately it's just been teen drama and more teen drama and a lot more unnecessary teen drama. It's almost unbearable anymore. SO this book is probably really good...for someone who REALLY likes reading Young Adult...

That being said, I hope others give it a try because there are great things being said about it and I don't want my ' I'm getting too old for this' opinion to scare anyone away.
