"JUMPING JEHOSHAPHAT! YOU'VE SHANGHAIED THE NEW SCHOOLMARM!"

Ma Reklaw bellowed at her sons and wielded her broom with a fierceness that had all five outlaw brothers running for cover; it didn't take a Ph.D. to realize that in the Reklaw household, Ma was the law. Professor Jessica Garrett watched dumbstruck as the members of the feared Reklaw Gang turned tail --- one brother up a tree, another under the hay wagon, and one in a barrel. Having been unceremoniously kidnapped by the rowdy brothers, the green-eyed beauty took great pleasure in their discomfort until Ma Reklaw found a new way to sweep clean her son's disreputable behavior --- by offering Jessica's hand in marriage to the best behaved. Jessie had heard of shotgun weddings, but a broomstick betrothal was ridiculous! As the dashing but dangerous desperadoes started the wooing there was no telling what would happen with ... ONE BRIDE FOR FIVE BROTHERS ...

The quick run down: professor Jessica Garrett and some colleagues are staying at a dude ranch and take a ride on an old stagecoach dressed in period piece. Whilst travelling through this mysterious canyon, they hit a bump in the road, Jessica’s knocked out and when she wakes up, she’s landed in the 1880's. Their stagecoach is robbed by the notorious Reklaw gang and the boys decide to take Jessica home to Ma. Ma Reklaw rules the roost with her broom and fiery temper and insists the boys court Jessica like proper gentlemen and let the best man win. Oldest brother Cole (the strong MCP silent type), doesn’t fall all over her like the younger boys , but he’s hot for Jessica and she’s soon hot for him as well.

Jessica adapts to life in the 1880s with relative ease (doesn’t seem to miss running water much at all), and starts teaching the Reklaw boys how to read and write, act like gentlemen and even encourages them to come to town and attend church and social functions so they can meet nice young ladies of their own. ‘Course, since they are notorious outlaws they have to take on assumed names but it doesn’t seem to occur to anyone to wonder about another family of five brothers…

Oh well. Jessica and Cole have lots of misunderstandings on the way to happiness, the brothers have sweethearts of their own, and there’s a big battle with the evil nasty mine owner. Sound silly? Well it is supposed to be a *funny* novel, but unfortunately the humor falls flat as a pancake. The younger Reklaw boys were ridiculous as all get out, their twanging accents got old very very fast, and Ma was more harridan than loveable curmudgeon.

My quibbles: Jessica calmly tells anyone and everyone that she graduated from university in New Mexico and had tought college level in Greeley. Over and above the fact that none of the males batted an eye at that statement, is that the story takes place in the 1880′s (I think it was 1888, but I am not going back to read again to find out). I googled universities in New Mexico for that period. Found one – the University of New Mexico - and Wik says it was founded in 1889. You do the math, but even if they were accepting ladies back then she did her four years just a wee bit early. Googled universities in Greeley. Found one. Same problem – even if women were allowed to teach college level students back then, the school wasn’t founded until 1889.

Now I know it’s a romance and we can’t expect as much historically, but still! OK, maybe they didn’t have Wik back in the late 90′s when this was written so that’s an excuse. Neither here nor there, the writing is just awful with plentiful silly prose and eye rolling bad sex.

“your eyes…so damn beautiful and big.”…”I have big eyes for you.”

*Rolls eyes*

“His powerful body backlit by sparkling morning sunshine, he appeared the epitome of arrogant, cynical male.”

Oh, the scintillating prose. Not. Almost forgot to tell you about the sex by an anthill scene. See, Jessica unknowingly sits on an anthill and Cole has to rip her clothes off to save her. Perfect lead up to sex (natch), but they do it on the ground right by the anthill and does either of them say a word or get bit during the act? No, they do not.

“There was only one way to ensure her silence, her cooperation-and that was with his mouth on hers and him buried deep inside her.”

“I’m claiming that other pulse of yours, the one deep inside you.”

Gag me.

”Hot filaments of passion threaded their way deep inside her, tormenting her…It was going to happen she realized. They were going to have hot, uninhibited sex again and she was powerless to do anything about it.”

And let’s not worry, younger brother Billy and his darlin’ Dumpling (yes, that is her name) get their own hot love scene,

“Billy was beyond replying, totally focused on the exquisite womanflesh squeezing about him. Dumpling was tight, velvety, so hot. He eased back and forth, tasting her, teasing her, spreading her wetness. Her moans further stoked his passions, and even though she was slick now, her virgin flesh gripped him with a pressure and friction that almost shattered his control. He pulled back and penetrated deep, beginning to move in earnest.”

Words fail me. Then there’s the big love scene in the upscale hotel in the public bathroom down the hall that had me scratching my head for a moment,

“He caught her hand and pressed his fingers to his swollen manhood.”

Uh, his fingers? Kinda sounded like a one man party for a moment there By this time you won’t even care if Jessica gets back to the future or stays in the past to marry Cole, and you’ll be gagging over Jessica’s Susy Sunshine Pollyanna attitude. There is a sequel called Bushwhacked Groom, but I will be passing on that party. Anyone else game to read it and report back?

I was so confused reading the first chapter of the book so I guess I can understand why Jessica was confused, too. I guess when I bought this book I didn't realize time travel was involved. Professor Jessica Garrett and some colleagues are staying at a dude ranch and take a ride on an old stagecoach dressed in period clothes. They travel through a canyon, they hit a bump in the road, Jessica’s knocked out and when she wakes up, she’s landed in the 1880's... then the real story begins!

Except I couldn't get into that story either... I won't spoil anything for you. Just know what you're about to read. It wasn't my cup of tea.

Four stars..Not like her other books basically centered on old west...Cole an robbery, and she a professor..Lots of sensual overtones..No real connection of why she was send back..I did not feel like it was a time travel novel not like her others..Have to wait and see.

I was in the mood for a time-travel romance and decided to give this a shot. This is a long read so be prepared. We have a college professor that is thrown back in time and has to learn how to live in the past. The other issue she was just kidnapped by a famous gang. They grow to love each other over time and it was a well done story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has my strong woman that I almost always look for in a book. There are some sex scenes between the main characters. The four brothers are so funny. Can’t wait to read the next book--Bushwhacked Groom.

Reading marathon

What a great book. I had one of those days that only a reader will understand - a marathon reading day. I love the banter between Cole and Jessica - seductive and sophisticated set within a great story. It was a book I simply couldn't put down.

When she is kidnapped by five outlaw brothers who are ruled by their mother, Ma Reklaw, and her broomstick, Professor Jessica Garrett's hand in marriage is offered to the best behaved brother, and chaos ensues when the courting starts, in a rollicking romance.

I enjoyed this book. Jessica was a bit weak-willed and wimpy at times, which I found frustrating and some parts were silly rather than funny but still worth reading.

Ugh.

Content warning : Rape, sexual assault.

It's too bad such a talented writer believes sexual assault is sexy and is rather confused on what rape is.

silly

If only I had a dollar for every time I read, “Sugar.” The least you could have done was make Cole intelligent

If you like western time travel romance, with Eugenia Riley's books you will feel like you've hit the jackpot because that is totally how I feel. I admittedly enjoy the cheesiest of cheese, so I also know that there will be a many readers who are just waiting to pick a book like this apart. To them I just say, "Get off my smut."

This is the second in this genre by Ms. Riley that I've read (and I may already be working on a third!), again I absolutely adored her character's performance but found the time travel aspect mediocre. The overall plot had excitement, suspense and a whole lot of hard edged encounters. Readers are brought to a setting that perfectly captures not only the primitive way of life, but the wild and untamed beauty of loving an outlaw.

Jessica is definitely out of her element, yet I didn't find her as frantic about her situation as I would expect a scholar to be. Cole on the other hand was every bit alpha-male and ready to face the situation; that sexy caveman-type. While he adapts to her being in his rather rustic conditions and decides to pursue her hot and heavy, he has doubts about a relationship because of his past. Neither can deny though, that when the flint strikes and the sparks ignite there is plenty of fire between them. Making "Bushwhacked Bride" one sultry romance.

Many of the secondary cast are also well-developed. They are a very eclectic group of people that I enjoyed getting to know. I was happy to learn that Ms. Riley offers a second novel where we get to see many of these characters again.

So here we have another delightful romance, that I heartily recommend. A truly wonderful cast of characters along with an action-packed story line make this a must for lovers of the genre.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I really like this book. Ms. Riley is one of my favorite authors so I may be a little biased by saying it was fantastic. I loved how she was able to connect past and present, how she was able to create a love between two characters that was completely undeniable. When Jessica meets Cole in the most unlikely way it is evident that she has feelings for him and him her but they just don't know it yet. Jessica finds Cole arrogant and undeniably sex but she is not able to admit her true feelings. As you travel with Jessica as she helps those who she was mwant to help, you learn a great deal of things. You learn that things used to be drastically different, you learn that one way or another you can change from bad to good if you truly wanted to, you learn that if you're loved you will be able to do anything. When Jessica helps the Reklaw boys better their education and themselves you are able to be inspired by her relentlessness. Im very glad that I was given the chance to read this book because I know that if I didn't, I would miss out on a lot. Give this book a chance and you will get to experience the amazing writing by Ms. Riley.

Who needs a gun to keep a guy in line when a broom is handy !
This review is from: BUSHWHACKED BRIDE (Bushwhacked in Time Book 1) (Kindle Edition)

Romance, and a broom, a combination to make you laugh. History professor winds up teaching a bunch of bandits how to read, write and capture a ladies heart so they will find their own loves and allow her to not be forced to marry one of them ! Stolen from a stage four brothers want to have a contest for her, when the oldest decides he wants to be the fifth choice and he's willing to cheat what's a gal to do?? Wedding bells, gun fire and stolen Gold makes this a romance to keep five outlaws on the straight and narrow. This is the type of Mother in Law you all want... one that will take your side and take a broom to a suitor that forgets his manners !

How cute! Rogues, robbers, bushwhackers and charmers! Those Reklaw men are too much for the women of 1888! I also loved that Jessie was a strong woman and held her own with "Ma and the boys". I laughed and smiled a lot while reading this one. A throwback to the old west definitely worth the read! Didn't really care for the backwards in time storyline because it didn't have much effect on the story other than the occasional mention of it towards the end. I thought that there would be some comparisons between 1888 and 1999 but it never materialized. Still, good for a laugh or two and a wink and a kiss!

Started this story about a month ago and then lost interest, it wasn't that it was so bad I just wasn't sure where the story was going. It had so many things going on, time travel, outlaws, school teachers obsessed with reforming these outlaws to be church going citizens, five separate romances-only two in detail though. Well it was interesting, was surprised by the ending wasn't sure how it all worked out, the whole time travel thing never really was explained except that this haunted gorge was like the Bermuda triangle I guess. This was obviously written over ten years ago, due to the lack of any technology mentioned in the story. Which was sort of refreshing.

Bushwhacked

Working on her dissertation on the life of a woman in the wild west, Jessica is whisked away from a stagecoach by a band of outlaw brothers. Determined to reform them, she is disheartened when they continue to rob from the local mine. Can Jessica reform this band of dastardly outlaw brothers before they all swing from a hangman noose? Will Cole truly change his ways for the love of a good woman? Will Jessica want to stay in 1888 or return to 1999? Another wonderful time travel romance from Eugenia Riley and highly recommended.

3 1/2 stars. Decent read. I enjoy time-travel romances, and I thought this one was fun. I don't expect to take the too seriously (their time travel for Pete's sake). I thought this one was a little "silly"-- especially the dialogue sometimes. Characters were pretty good, but I really didn't feel a strong connection between the H and h. Not the best story I have read from this genre, but definitely not the worst.

A rather funny book, it does kind of drag on in parts but there are other spots that are just priceless. The time travel part wasn't all that important which bugged me a bit, there wasn't much said about the adjustments that Jessie had to make, and even though she was a Professor for Old West type history there should have still be issues that popped up! the Ending was very sweet and Cole is one of those one in a million to dye for kind of guys. Over all I would say 3.5 stars

Nice read

Bushwacked Bride is an interesting and nice read. I love the story and the characters.
The way the story started is good and as the story goes, it keeps getting better and better.
I love how the story was written but there are times that I don't understand some words but it did not prevent me from enjoying this book.. =)
Love this.. can't wait to see the next book in the series!!

I like time travel books and really wanted to like this but I couldn't. I was fine with the time travel twist and liked that aspect of the book but the characters were all stupid. All of the them. There are much better time travel books available. I wouldn't recommend wasting any time on this one.

It might have been free download, I hope so.
Interesting idea, but wishy-washy story, plot and character development was awful.
Romance meets western life, there are better time travel books.
I was hoping the book would get better, but now I'm glad I can remove it from my nook.

Great book. Usually don't like time travel books because they become too convoluted but this one didn't. A little danger along with romance. Good character formation and interesting plot.
