A very enjoyable book about a couple who suddenly decide to split up during a random argument. After a couple decades of marriage, Hannah and Dan Pinkman barely tolerate each other and when they reach the breaking point, Dan moves out and Hannah is left to pick up the pieces and figure out what her next step will be. Her friends convince her to start an online dating profile using Pamela Anderson as her inspiration. To Hannah’s horror and surprise and also excitement, Dan and Pammy connect online and start corresponding.
I got a big kick out of this story and have to say that in all of the online dating trope stories I have read, I have yet to read one where an estranged couple find one another online and begin to like each other again. I wondered frequently throughout this story how Dan would react when he finds out who Pammy really is and how Hannah would be able to keep it from him or how she confesses.
Hannah truly believes her marriage is over so she tries to move on but her heart isn’t really in it. Adding to that is her grown son who lacks any ambition, her elderly aunt Pearl, who is getting more action at the retirement home she lives at, the job she hates and overcoming the fear that nobody will ever want to see her naked again.
This book hit all the marks on fun, charm, wittiness and personality. The characters were easy to relate to and get to know. This was my first Polly James book but it will not be my last. Her sense of humor, snark and sarcasm were brilliant and brought these characters to life. I loved how Hannah’s humanity, faults and all, were displayed so eloquently that I couldn’t help but empathize with her.
For me, Hannah is a character that anyone who has suffered a break-up can see bits of themselves in. Love is never just smooth sailing. It can be messy, chaotic and sometimes painful. When the people who are struggling fight for that love, it’s worth it.
My Final Verdict: Overall, this is an amazing book that I highly recommend to readers who love a happy ending for characters that lose their way but refuse to give up.

This is such a delightful book. The cover initially drew me to choose it- I couldn't leave it unread! I could not put it down.
Hannah's life changes suddenly after an argument and her husband of 27 years says they should split. She is devastated- but after chatting to her aunt realises that she needs to make some changes. As part of her new lifestyle she meets friends and tries internet dating.
It's so amusing in parts and in others you can feel her pain losing the man of her dreams - even if things had been allowed to slip into humdrum. Her friend works for a very fashionable magazine and has some interesting conversations with Hannah and where she should be driving her life forward.
The characters are really warm, you'd love to join them with a glass of wine, but maybe not some of the other escapades! It's a book about family life, loss, relationships and dating for the over 40's in a new world they haven't had to contemplate before. You can imagine yourself in their place- whilst hoping it's never going to happen!
Some of the work stories really made me smile- I could just imagine her boss and some of the team building exercises that would make you cringe.
I will be keen to look out for more of Polly's work- her writing style really drew me in.

I've actually read "Would Like to Meet..." some time ago after receiving my ARC copy, having mixed the publication dates, but even though I haven't written my review then I can still remember the highlights of the book - which is a great thing because it means that I truly bear it in my mind and that it's not a book easily forgotten. It is also a second book by Polly James, and second that I had a pleasure to read and I can say that the author doesn't fear to write about things that are not so obvious, that are painful, about our everyday problems but in a very entertaining, down - to - earth way.
There is a great mix of characters in the book and you can choose between funny, nice, hilarious, unlikeable and all of them are going to surprise you. Hannah is a great character, so well written and rounded and it was a real joy to follow her on her journey to find happiness again. I loved her down - to - earthnesness and that she maintained a healthy distance to herself, not taking herself too seriously. She had moments of breakdown which only made her feel so much more realistic, because who wouldn't have a breakdown when in her shoes? The things she goes through are sometimes heart - breakingly sad and sometimes laugh - out - loud funny but always realistic and there were moments that I found myself cringing with embarrassment, saying "Oh God" and rolling my eyes but mostly I just wanted that everything went great for Hannah.
There was one character that bothered me a lot and it was Esther, Hannah's friend from work. I think I looked through Esther right at the very beginning and it frustrated me that Hannah hasn't seen what kind of person Esther is. This was this typical kind of toxic relationship and as much as it annoyed me that Hannah sticks with Esther, I also could understand and see the mechanisms that pulled her back from finishing this relationship and why she always tried to engage Esther in her activities. However, Esther, a very big no - go from me.
But my most anticipated part of the book was when Hannah eventually agreed to join a couple of online dating sites! You know how much I loved stories about dates, blind dates, online dating etc, no idea why to be honest, I just love them, and each time I can't wait to see on which levels of hilarity the author is going to take us with. And even though Polly James has organized neither an earthquake nor revolution when it comes to online dating, some of Hannah's experiences were hilarious and impossible to describe - just let me tell you that I wasn't disappointed! Hannah was sometimes speechless at what she discovered at the websites, and I was speechless with her...
I am not a specialist in splitting up (hallelujah!!!) but I think that even though some of the reviewers are moderate about the way it happened in the book, I think that this is the way it happens - the emotions and feelings rally for a long time and then what we need is a knickknack, a bagatelle, a detail for them to explode and here we are, splitting over a reality TV program.
Altogether "Would Like to Meet..." is a light, funny and entertaining story with a great depth to it. At first it will make you think about marriages and that not everything may be as we think it is, and then it'll have you in stitches/horrified/entertained while introducing you to the world of modern dating, and actually how dating looks like after many years you used to do this. Polly James just hits the most important spots and writes how it really is, without beating around the bush, but also without any patronising moments, in a very accessible way. The book is written in a easy and light way and I quickly found myself totally immersed in Hannah's life. It is a thoughtful and warm read, full of characters that it is easy to connect with, even if they annoy you every once in a while, so true to life and I really enjoyed it.

As soon as I saw this cover I was smitten! I couldn't wait to delve into the story of Hannah and Dan and I'm so glad I did! Would Like To Meet is one of those books that you just can't help but fall head over heels for.
Hannah and Dan have been married for what seems like forever. They have a teenage son and their own house and seem to be sorted in life. However when they start bickering over something small it escalates quickly into an argument that ultimately ends up in them splitting up. Dan moves out and Hannah stays at home with their son who is hell bent on getting his parents back together again.
As the weeks go by, Hannah tries to embrace single life with help from her friends but finds that it's not that easy...!
Can Hannah and Dan repair their relationship or is it over forever?
Polly writes with such wit and humour that nearly every page has a moment that puts a smile on your face or has you giggling at something Hannah ends up getting tangled up in. I loved that even though the plot was one that would cause agony and upset for most people, Polly managed to inject a lightheartedness to it and lift it from being dreary into a story that was enlightening and positive. I loved Hannah's character and even though I'm not in the same generation as her, I certainly could relate to a lot of what she felt and what she was going through which was really impressive; normally I find myself disconnected from characters that are older than I am!
The plot was pretty unpredictable too which was a nice surprise! For the vast majority of the book I had no idea where it would end up and it kept me on my toes. I also loved how the pacing of the novel never wavered; it was constantly moving forward and I was always compelled to read 'just one more chapter!' This is a book you could easily devour in one sitting too...Would Like To Meet has that ability to make reading it feel completely effortless.
I really recommend you pick this book up, it is a really funny, modern and positive portrayal of what happens when two people finally realise that they need to change the way they're living. Definitely one to read on the beach on holiday!

To be honest, I have a bad habit of (literally) judging a book by its cover. That said, I found the cover of this particular book really cute and the summary was quite interesting as well which was why I requested for this on Netgalley. However, as I read along, I found “Would Like to Meet” to be quite dull after a few chapters.
I found Hannah to be quite annoying and naive for a woman her age. Maybe it’s because I’ve always had this thought that as you grow older, you become wiser and more confident about yourself and Hannah just reminded me of a prepubescent whose nerves are all out of whack. Also, at her age, shouldn’t she have seen through Esther? I felt like they acted like a bunch of teenagers.
As for that part wherein they were shopping for clothes in London, I thought that if Viva Vintage were the salesgirls’ favorite magazine, they would have recognized the editor the moment she stepped in their store therefore casually mentioning it would be unnecessary.
The characters (as well as the way the story was going) were uninteresting save for Pearl and Albert.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find it in me to continue reading till the end. I did look at the ending and sure enough (was it meant to be predictable though?), it was exactly how I predicted it to end.

Hannah and Dan had a very long marriage, until one night, after a discussion, Dan said something to Hannah and the separation seems inevitable. Joel was the grown up son that still lived with his parents, can’t understand how or why they are separating. The book focus on this one fight, and I thought was funny and adorable that Dan was still in love with Hannah and vice versa, the online dating between both characters without Dan knowing that he was courting his ex wife was perfect.
I loved the characters, they were very real and Hannah had such a funny way to deal with her problems that was hilarious!
I give this book 5 stars! Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for sending me the book for a review.

I received this book for an honest review. I thought this book was fantastic, I loved the main character Hannah not just because she has my name but she does stuff that is hilarious though I did feel sorry for her in some parts. This is a story about the importance of friendship and rediscovering yourself. I would definitely recommend this book if you want a feel good read.

I think everyone goes through ups and downs in their relationships and marriage, and when the relationship is worth it, then they are looking to bring the sparkle back into it.
Recently I've read a few books where the heroines were looking for the One. When I started searching for a new book to read, I went on Avon NetGalley site and was instantly taken by Would like to Meet cheerful cover and when I read the synopsis for this book I could not wait to find out about Hannah Pinkman story.
And I can honestly say this book is a fantastic mix of well developed and lovable characters, intriguing storyline with a few surprises up its sleeve and heartwarming and emotionally gooey middle that drives you to literary inhaled this story in one breath.
I loved Hannah and her journey in searching for the new herself after a rather shocking split with her husband, Dan. Hannah struggles to come to terms with her newly single status that comes with a few panic attacks, lots of crying and... a couple of new friends ( some good ones some not so good). As well as I felt for Hannah's heartbreak I couldn't help but laugh at some of the situations she got herself into with the help of her two friends. Eva, who I adored! Eva is the bold and beautiful one. And Esther ( Hannah's co-worker) who I quite dislike from the beginning. Ester's attitude and her actions were frankly appalling.
I enjoyed reading Dan side of this story. Dan also struggles after the split from his wife. He moves in with some of his co-workers, and it almost seems like he is enjoying his new status but as the days/weeks go by, and Dan does all the things single people do or so are told to do even he starts to questions his future away from his wife of 27 years.
Aside from Hannah and Dan, I just adored their son Joel, who would do anything to bring his parents back together.
Would Like to Meet is a story about family/relationship break up but it is also a story of hope and a new beginning. Polly James writing style is captivating, witty and inspiring!
I am highly recommending this book to everyone!

I love this cover. I mean how could you not be drawn in with that?
Once you've picked this up, what you'll get is the story of Hannah. A woman cut off and left to fend for herself in the wilderness after 27 years of marriage to Dan. Her husband. Working in a place nicknamed halfwits by the staff and a fembot for a manager. With an ageing aunt having a more varied and interesting life than she is. A 25 yr old son, Joel, still living at home and his behaviour getting more erratic daily. Eva her glamorous new friend who has secured an exclusive and exciting new job as editor of one of the trendiest glossies Viva Vintage. Esther, a very "single white female "kind of a character. Hannah does all she can to improve herself and her confidence to prove to the world she can cope.
After joining a couple of online dating sites she is speechless at what she finds............
This is a well written book. Starts off with amusing asides and some outright funny moments. However, I did find the first part of the book a bit more enjoyable than the second. I found after a time some of it a bit repetitive and the lead character could be a bit ditzy and naive at times. Saying that though, I did enjoy it and would recommend It to anyone. Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read and review this arc.

I got far more from this book than I expected. This book dealt with some serious real life issues, dealing with marriage and separation. I don't usually like these type of books. I wasn't prepared to care about this one either, but the author made me feel for these two main characters and I actually hurt for them and their situation. I felt all kinds of things for them.
I give it only 3 stars because while I liked it and it made me have all kinds of feels, I really wish that the message here of having to separate to find yourself and then you can come together again-I see this a lot and I don't feel its necessary to separate (from your marriage and your partner) to find yourself. But I get it.
Overall, worth a read if this is the type of book you like. I don't feel everybody would like it, but it is good.

I was given advanced copy for a honest review. I loved this book. I found it hilarious in parts. But also heartwarming. I didnt want this book to end. Couple Hannah and Dan have been married for such a long time. They have a son called Joel. After a sudden rocky patch in their marriage they decided to split. Things need to change. The story then tells of both of the trying to cope with single life. Hannah tries Internet dating, she puts up a fake profile and then she discovers thats ex husband Dan is also on the same dating site. Hannah has the idea to pretend to be someone else to find out what he is upto. But, also at the same time she starts dating.
The story also describes Hannah's work like and also they lengths she goes to transform her life for the better with the help of her friends and family.
This is such a enjoyable story I loved every minute of it.

When Hannah has another silly row with Dan her husband of 27 years and he says he wants to split up she is devastated. Totally lacking in confidence about her looks and her age she thinks she will be left to live on her own for ever and she has let all of her old friendships slip over the years.
She starts going to clubs and lectures every night to get out but without really enjoying it but then she meets Eva just back from the States and a very glam editor of a vintage magazine. Eva decides she needs taking in hand and gives her a makeover and persuades her to go on dating websites......and guess who comes up as her perfect match!
A lovely fun story with some great comic moments, especially over the dating, and some brilliant characters, definitely worth reading
She starts going to clubs and lectures every night to get out but without really enjoying it but then she meets Eva just back from the States and a very glam editor of a vintage magazine. Eva decides she needs taking in hand and gives her a makeover and persuades her to go on dating websites......and guess who comes up as her perfect match!
A lovely fun story with some great comic moments, especially over the dating, and some brilliant characters, definitely worth reading

I wanted to read this book as soon as I read the description, as it sounded like a funny, contemporary read.
I found I could relate to the protagonist very well, along with some of the situations she found herself in.
With comedy moments, times that make you want to knock two people's heads together to make them see sense, and a very engaging style of writing, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good long holiday read, or simply a book to escape into when they have a few spare moments.
At times the writing style reminded me of both Helen Fielding and Debbie Viggiano, both authors I enjoy reading.
Highly recommend 'Would Like To Meet'. I would love to read more by this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK/Avon for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. I am not going to give spoilers, but will say this is about a couple who is going through a rough patch, leading to separation. They have to leap into the world of online dating, with unexpected results. This was a fun read, which had good characters. It also makes you take a look at your own relationships.

A funny book that reminded me a little of Fiona Gibson's style of writing (a good thing ).

Polly James has written another wonderful touching hilarious novel.Hannah is in a long marriage she thinks it will last forever.When her husband suddenly asks for a divorce her world falls apart.The Steps she takes to put her life together will have you cheering her on &when she joins the modern day invention of a dating service the fun?begins.

Always a pleasure to read a well written book. I thought it had an interesting premise, and I immediately felt connected to the main characters, and their dilemmas. It was a thoughtful, warm and funny book about life, love, relationships - both old and new - familiar and chaotic. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. This was such a great read and full of surprises. incredibly funny story about a couple in their almost fifties, that break up on New Years Day, and then try to spend the next year trying to move on from each other.
Told from Hannah's perspective, we see just what dating is like for a slightly older woman, and it sounds no better than for younger women! It is hilarious, from an outsiders point of view at least!
I loved how Hannah tries to make new friends, tries internet dating, and all sorts of other things to try to get over Dan, but you need to read the book to see if anything works.
This was quite a quick and easy book to read, and I think there are characters within it that anyone can relate to.
Really enjoyed Would Like To Meet and would be interested to see what else the author writes in the future,

Totally different romance novel from my usual choice, but it was kind of refreshing to read. Hopefully I don't ever end up in a similar situation, although finding a friend like Ava is a lucky bonus.
Minor remark: the heroin seemed a bit too pathetic sometimes to be really likeable.

To start with, what a cover. I saw this and somehow knew that there was such a little chance of it being anything but enjoyable, and I wasn’t let down. So we begin with a prologue that tells us of the beginnings of Hannah and Dan and we smile at how in love they are. Fast forward twenty seven years and now we are beginning to see the end, when a simple few comments quickly turn into some home truths that get out of control. I loved Ms James’ style, it reminded me of Fiona Gibson or Aimee Horton, more dialogue and funny goings on with a nice mix of realistic descriptions that put you at the scene of the crime each time. There were a few things to be sorted as you read, in the back of your mind you had an idea of what was going on, and sneaking suspicions of other happenings. The characters were great, I loved how human Hannah was, how strong her aunt Pearl was, and I loved the ‘baddy’ of the story-again so human that you couldn’t figure out what to feel about here. Joel was great, as was Dan, and I loved the insights into how both parties of the break-up felt.
My only issue with this book was, I suppose, a big enough one. When the pacing dipped I found myself having to push myself to keep going, just a little bit. A pleasant read, although I did find the beginning where Hannah and Dan split up quite abrupt. One minute they're arguing about nothing in particular then they've decided to separate, no discussion, nothing. When you've been together for 27 years surely it at least deserves a discussion about if it's the right thing to do or should they try and make more of an effort, but no, one minute they're disagreeing slightly about a reality TV program and the next they're splitting up.
There were some funny bits in the middle once Hannah had met Eva and tried to negotiate the trials and tribulations of suddenly being 'single' at 50, but really Hannah needed to get herself together. For a woman of her age she was surprisingly inept at practically everything, from trying to fix a broken tumble dryer with a knife and fork, to dropping pizza down the back of the oven shelf or on the floor - it's pizza.... I'm no chef myself but even I can manage to cook a pizza!
She then joined an online dating site and finds out that Dan is also registered... and they start online chatting. Hannah knew it was him at first as she'd found his profile earlier and had been hacking/stalking his account, but Dan didn't realise who he was chatting to as Hannah used another name. After Eva's transformation of Hannah though, with new clothes and a haircut, her confidence was boosted quite a bit and she ended up seeing a younger guy for a short while and really trying to make more of her life. I really didn't think much of her co-worker/friend Esther, she always put a downer on things and I'm not sure why Hannah had anything to do with her, and then when she did what she did towards the end, well my suspicions about her were confirmed!
This was a book that grew on me as it went along, and it ended up with a happy ending, which is always good in my book!

When a brief petty argument leads to a permanent separation for Hannah and Dan Pinkman, they find being single again isn’t as easy as they’d hoped.
My goodness I’m grateful for this book. Life has been extremely difficult over the last week or so and Would Like to Meet has been the perfect antidote. It is funny, entertaining and wonderfully warm so that I have found myself laughing when I thought the chances of that happening again in the near future were very remote. Polly James has incredible skill in turning a phrase to encapsulate exactly how a middle aged woman like me might think, feel and speak, even when we don’t have the same experiences as Hannah. Reading Would Like to Meet has been like having a break from the challenges of life at the most expensive health spa and I feel refreshed as a result.
Polly James has such an effortless, flowing style, making Would Like to Meet a pleasure to read. I also really enjoyed the fact that the narrative is chronological, spanning a year without the challenge of time slip or dual narratives so that I could be entertained without having to think too hard. This is perfect escapism.
The main character, Hannah, frequently addresses the reader directly so that they feel part of the story too. I thought all the characters were well defined – even when they themselves weren’t sure exactly who they were or wanted to be.
Even though this is a lighthearted read, there’s a strong message about grasping experiences in both hands, not taking things for granted and making the most of life.

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. I must admit the cover of the book drew me in and the description intrigued me so I decided I needed to read this book. Hannah is about to find out that sometimes life doesn't follow the rules at all and you need to be careful what you set out to get when you say and do certain things. She has been married to Dan for twenty-seven years and life has become a tad humdrum. An argument one evening escalates and before Hannah really realises what's happening Dan is walking out on their marriage moving into a rented room in a work colleague's house (a female work colleague at that). Hannah is determined to prove that she can make it at fifty without Dan by her side; internet dating, blind dates and makeovers all cross her path as she navigates 21st century relationship building. She isn't very good at any of it and even her Aunt Pearl who has just moved into a retirement home seems to handle dating better than her. This book did have some laugh out loud moments and some cringe worthy situations. It had a genuineness to the story and some of the characters were extremely likable. I did have a few moments when Hannah annoyed me a little with her attitude but I actually think that is how I needed to feel (very similarly to how people in Hannah's life were feeling). It does feel like a bit of a rollercoaster ride as Polly James takes you through all the ups and downs of life when a long term relationship is coming to an end; while you might scream along the way you can't wait to do it all over again.

This book has been sitting on my TBR for quite some time and as much as I longed to read it I never had the spare space in between other books that also were due reviews. But as they say some things are best the longer you wait and this is no exception.
I made the conscious effort to read something that would raise a smile and this truly did, not only a smile but some rather unladylike guffaws.
Hannah and Dan have been married for yonks, have a grown up son who hasn't yet managed to fly the nest and any little irritation is likely to cause a row, sounds a bit familiar if I'm honest!
Anyway as Hannah approaches her 50th birthday she finds herself single, considering online dating, craving friends and a social life. She seems to have lost herself during her marriage and the consequences of being alone after Dan leaves are both hilarious and mortifying.
We follow her day to day adventures as she goes away with her friend, dates new men, endures some hideous situations at work, deals with her son etc.
I warmed to Hannah eventually although at times she was SO melodramatic, Eva her friend is totally scatty, Joel the son is a typical 'male' of that age and poor old Dan the hubby is the one I actually felt some sympathy for.

The cover first drew me to Would Like to Meet..., but what is inside hooked me on this “new to me” author, Polly James. Hannah and Dan have been married a long time, long enough to have an adult son and long enough to not really remember why they were together in the first place. It is one those moments that seem small, a flippant comment over a TV show, and then by the time it is over, so is a marriage.
The book follows Hannah as she tries to figure out what went wrong, who she is now, who Dan is now, what she is supposed to do next, how to navigate the treacherous currents of online dating, how to make friends when you’re a grown up and how to row a boat. The book has both laugh out loud and tissue box moments. The emotional tone of the story rings true even through some of the more outrageous adventures that Hannah embarks on.
I really enjoyed reading this and will keep an eye out for more books by Polly James.
