Alliance #3

Collision

Rate this book
When Earth suddenly gains inexplicably high levels of magic, all fingers point at the Alliance.

On a distant world, where magic-fuelled forces of nature rule over humans, a disaster is sweeping the land, threatening to knock the Balance across the Multiverse out of sync. When Kay and Ada are sent there with the other Ambassadors, they’re thrown into the centre of chaos. Nature is alive, and angry.

Ada embraces the magic she still half-fears, but learning to control it proves harder than she can imagine. Kay, meanwhile, becomes more reckless than ever when testing the boundaries of his own abilities. When faced with living magic, no one is safe from its influence. Ada and Kay must choose what they’re willing to risk for the sake of saving a world that might already be doomed. Can mortals overcome the gods?

Collision is the third book in the world-hopping urban fantasy Alliance series.

Kinda confusing but an excellent payoff

So I super love this series. This book started out more than a bit confusing on how the new problem world fits into the universe the author has previously created, but it all came together near the end. There is a cliff hanger ending, so beware if that's something you hate, but I'm beyond excited to read the next book as it should delve more into questions about Ada and her history. I loved the character development of Ada and Kay, and I'm very curious about Ms Weston's story and the role she'll play in later books. And if I'm not mistaken, there may be some setup to discover more about Kay's father, which would be super interesting. Once again, the book is well written with a complex plot and world, but not so much that you can't follow. Have patience with the seeming contradictions and confusion because the payoff is definitely worth it.

Too many repetition of the same discussions like none of it ever happined in the previous pages and chapters

The story is excellent, however, there were a lot repeated discussions as if it was the first time it was discussed. I had to check multiple times if I accidentally turned back a few pages, even chapters, because the discussions the characters were having were having were exactly the same as the previous pages and chapters. It was like the characters have completely forgotten what they already talked about, even reported to the dragon, that they have to go through it all over again.

These repetitions was the turning point, again the story was good but those multiple instances of repeats killed immersion completely.

I struggled with the 1st and 2nd book until the endings, and I just don’t have it to keep trying to force myself to do that with the rest of the series. I don’t care for any of these characters. Ada has no personality and Kay is a self-important workaholic that thinks it’s his responsibility to fix the whole universe without any accountability. The best character is Alber and that’s not saying much when the best character is a 17yr old kid that might show up 2-3 times.

I've already read the first two books in the series and was really looking forward to this one.

Ada is now at the Alliance and doing well. It was nice to see her settling into the group while keeping the same nice, sometimes snarky Ada, as I've grown to appreciate in the series. She's strong, but not too strong. Assured but not too much so. In other words, fun to cheer for but not so much a hero that she becomes unbelievable. She needs help, acknowledges that and accepts it.

Kay, on the other hand, is still brooding and difficult. We learn more about him and his situation, but his thick skull is as frustrating as ever. There is, of course, a type of romance between him and Ada, but this by no means overtakes the main plot, acting more as a little breeze along the side - a stiff one.

One thing I appreciate about this series is the fantasy. There's still all sorts of new creatures, twists and turns in this book which keep it from feeling repetitive. Several things aren't based on logic, but seeing as this is a alien/magical adventure taking place on various worlds throughout the universe, logic won't always have a place anyway. The ending came very unexpected and left quite a few holes, but I'm suspecting (heavily) that there is more to come. It will be interesting to see where the adventures go next, since this one has opened up a whole new realm as far as Ada's concerned.

The action is non-stop and there are enough sub-plots to keep things bouncing around. I especially enjoyed getting to know more about the other characters and enjoyed watching them mold into all of this--puzzle pieces sliding into place. There were several choices and events toward the end, which felt a bit thrown together, but a lot happens, so I'm betting if I read through it again, several things might click into place.

Summed up, Collision is a great continuation in this fantasy-filled, high-paced adventure, and I can't wait to see where our heroes end up next.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I was lucky to be allowed to beta read this book. This series has introduced such a fascinating definition of magic! I especially enjoyed how Kay and Ada have come to trust each other, but at the same time, both know magic can throw a wrench in the works at any moment. Some fun new characters were introduced (especially love Iriel and her tech!). The world of the Multiverse and the Alliance is further deepened in this book, including the mystery surrounding Kay's father and Ada's home planet, and what part they'll play in the future. I'm really looking forward to finding out more! I'm truly impressed and amazed at the complex world and descriptions created here, although there were a couple of spots I found a touch confusing. As for the end of the book, well, let's just say we NEED book 4!

**I was lucky enough to beta-read this book.**

COLLISION. Where the heck do I start? Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed the third book in this fantastic, inventive, truly unique series. I was surprised by how action-packed and complicated this story line was, and I loved every minute of it. The growth both between Ada and Kay (and as separate characters) in addition to how intricate the world-building is getting blew me away. I really loved the relationship between Kay and Ada's brothers lol. Even though this book ends on a massive cliffhanger, I found it satisfying and fun. I can't wait to read book four!

Sucked in

Really enjoying this series and how magic works/doesn't work in this world. (Spoilers) really glad Kay and Ada got together, sucks that they were immediately torn apart...

Love them!

I keep coming back for more. All of the characters seem to make me want to get to know them better, even the bad guys. Kay and Ada? Very strong leads that I can't help rooting for. Love them!
