Urgh, I feel this book offers dangerous advice. So the idea is that the book quizzes you to get to your addiction type - I apparently wasn't seriously addicted because my sugar consumption doesn't leave me with any additional health problems. Never mind the fact that almost every time I reach for food I want something sweet ... So I went with the type I identified closest with despite the quiz results and it suggested I have a yeast imbalance, and that I should take fluconazole daily for 6-12 weeks. FYI, fluconazole is the medication that treats thrush with one single dose, good luck even finding a pharmacy or doctor to dose you up such a ridiculous amount! The book itself states that you can't test for a yeast imbalance but still recommends a ridiculous quantity of a prescription medication? No thank you. Some of the advice was ok, but that is drowned out by the severity of the stupid advice given.
The ideas seem plausible. But I thought I had a major sugar addiction, took some of the tests and it seemed like I fit in one of the categories of addiction a little better than others. Lo and behold I got all the way gluten free and the sugar addiction is gone, really gone, like I was able to use brown sugar in a recipe and was never tempted to hunt for lumps in the bag to eat. So my .02, if your sugar addiction is serious try getting off the gluten, if that doesn't fix it this would be the next place I went.
I mostly skimmed this book yesterday and today. And there were a few gems that I want to retain: - don't eat foods that list sugar in the first 3 ingredients - consider using a sugar-alternative for my tea at work (Truvia, Purevia, Stevita, Body Ecology, sucralose, saccharin) - look into the natural sweetener: ribose - quick fix for a sugar craving: a small candy under the tongue, which goes straight to your bloodstream
I liked some of the concepts, but I didn't like the product promotion. The author REALLY wants you to buy certain products to help you beat your sugar addiction, which only makes it sound like a marketing scam...
This book read like an article in a glossy magazine.
The authors did not make a convincing case for people being physiologically addicted to sugar, but identified four types of persons have strong cravings for it.
Their prescriptions for overcoming a sugar dependency include: sleep, exercise, eat low carb, take zinc and manage stress.
My mom is battling diabetes and my friend recommended this book. Some of it is hard to fit in with the diabetes information, but mostly this is going to be good for our whole family. Dr. Teitelbaum and Ms. Fiedler do a very good job at explaining how to make better choices. Too bad a lot of it is just willpower.
The part I liked best is when they give quizzes at the beginning so you can see what your problems are, and the quizzes were easy to take and I learned a lot. Also, there was god ideas about making different food choices and things to eat instead of sugar and bread. Also, this book looks really long when you look at it from the outside, but its a workbook, so it is not as long as you would think. There are lots of charts to fill out and it is easy to read.
I think this book will help me cook for my mom and also for myself. It also gives information I didn't know, like watermelon is way more sugary and bad for you than other fruit and if you cook pasta for longer it has more sugar and is not as good for you. This book is like a workbook but with some more reading, but it is okay reading and you will learn a lot.
Good information. What I like about this book is you don't have to read the entire book, just what pertains to you. Me, A. Teez? I'm a Type 3 Ho-Ho Hunter. In earlier years, I have eaten an entire box of Ho-Ho's at one sitting, open up, palm the end and shove it in. Oh my Lord, what short lived elation I feel, pseudo-orgasm, but that is just the sugar craving candida within my gut, fooling me, using me.
The sugar cravings can be defeated. It is difficult to implement all of his recommended changes at once, but if you can, results will be quicker. If you find all of it disheartening, then pick one thing and start with that. For Ho-Ho hunters, start with a good acidophilus, probiotic - remember you get what you pay for, go for quality. Pick his book up at the first of every month and try implementing another suggestion. You can be a slow and steady tortoise or a napping hare, either way, candida's going down. Like I said, it's good information.
I didn't find this book especially helpful. I took the tests to determine the "type" of sugar addict I am (or types) but I didn't fall into any of the categories. As I read the rest of the book I realized it is primarily for those who really rely upon gross amounts of sugar (after reading the book I apparently don't take in as much sugar as I thought) and treating the ailments that are associated with, or caused by, to much sugar. I don't have any of these ailments (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, IBS, depression, heart disease, migraines/headaches, obesity, sinusitis, etc.) and so this information was not helpful to me, nor were there any strategies to help me overcome my sugar addiction that I felt were useful toward my specific type of sugar cravings.
I’ve been trying to cut back on the sugar and white flour I consume and this nonfiction was a great motivator. It identifies the four types of sugar addiction and gives advice on how to break cravings. I recommend it if you’re contemplating healthier eating habits and want more information about sugar addiction in particular.
Great book! This book gives suggestions on what to do to beat sugar addiction and also suggests vitamins and their doses to make you feel well again. It also has suggestions on what to do if you have a chronic illness.
This book had many helpful hints in it. I am working on offering my family a healthy lifestyle, so the hints from this book will be put into action. The information in this book was layman friendly and well organized.
This book was interesting in the fact that it broke sugar addiction down into four main types. Beyond that not much new....don't eat sugar, exercise, blah blah. Too many recommended vitamins and supplements for me.
Sugar addiction, like any kind of addiction, is detrimental to your health. If you suspect sugar is taking over your life, you likely have one of the four kinds of sugar addiction.
The SHINE method helps you overcome fatigue by quelling your sugar addiction. SHINE stands for Sleep, Hormonal support, Infections, Nutritional support and Exercise. Let’s go over what each of these means.
First off, sleep. Be sure to get in eight hours of sleep every night. Your body craves sugar when you’re not getting enough sleep because it needs more energy to keep you going.
Next, hormonal support. It’s possible you’re tired because your thyroid, the gland in your neck that releases the hormones that extract energy from food, isn’t active enough. An insufficiently active thyroid makes you feel tired and crave sugar. A physician can treat this condition according to your individual needs.
Infections comes next. Sugar addiction flattens your energy levels, which weakens your immune system. A poor immune system, in turn, makes you more susceptible to infections, like the flu. There are a number of ways you can improve your immune system, such as by consuming more zinc, which is found in multivitamin supplements. Foods high in protein give your immune system a boost too.
You also have to consider nutritional support. Be sure to eat plenty of whole foods, like unprocessed fruits, vegetables, grains and meat. Whole foods are critical to a good diet because they contain a lot of nutrients and much less sugar than processed or prepared foods. You can also supplement your diet with vitamins; your body doesn’t crave sugar nearly as much when it has all the vitamins and minerals it needs.
Finally, exercise! Exercise boosts your energy and suppresses your sugar cravings. You don’t have to run a marathon to “exercise;” you can start by taking a 30-minute walk just four to seven times per week.
People are wired to love sugar. This is an unfortunate byproduct of our ancestral times living as nomads and gathering our food.
Beat Sugar Addiction Now is a book written by Doctor Jacob Teitelbaum and Chrystle Fiedler. It claims that there are four distinct types of sugar addiction. It presents each type, how they differ, and how to battle that particular type. The advice is relevant, but not exceptional.
Beat Sugar Addiction Now was written in 2010. It presents a lot of supplements that you can take and a complete sugar detox menu. I am suspicious of such advice since it seems as though the people offering it always have a personal stake. For example, the person might have invested in the company making a supplement.
The book has numerous checklists. Sometimes the book changes the font it uses. These are small complaints in the grand scheme of things.
In conclusion, sugar addiction is still a concern. I don't know if this book will aid anyone, but it can't hurt either.
An easy book to skim. Gave me some good info on what sugar can do to a body, and how eating healthy can affect bodies physically and mentally. A good reminder for me to be careful about what I eat and get the vitamins and minerals for my body to function at its best. Much of it is repetitive, but helpful. Can be a bit overwhelming because he lists so many supplements and minerals, but I think you can just decide what is most important and reasonable for you, and it will be helpful.
Sugar is not healthy, that's true but authors offer to take vitamins without any medical tests. Vitamins without control can be worse than any sugar! Be careful and don't follow their reco without doctor's guides
This book promotes two things: author's clinic and self-medication. While some information here can definitely broaden the reader's mind to a certain degree, this mindset can be quite dangerous.
Lots of helpful information in this book. I liked how it was laid out sos you can easily focus on those chapters that apply to you most. A few things seemed outdated like advice about aspartame, but overall it was helpful.
The author's theory is that there are four types of sugar addiction and includes questionnaires to determine which one you are. He also has descriptive names for the four, and I knew immediately that I was a Happy Ho-Ho Hunter, as that was my lunch every day for four years. Not surprisingly, the questionnaire validated my instinct.
From there, the book provides ideas for addressing the addiction. There are big picture items, like sleep, and recommended actions for addressing the big picture items. For women (and men with low-Testosteron), the information for type 4 sugar addicts is interesting, whether or not that's your addiction due to the discussion about the effects of PMS, menopause, and low-T and possible fixes for them. For supplements, he recommends amounts, brands, and how long to take them. I appreciated the brand recommendation (for his brands, he donates the profits to charity), which often came with explanations of why he recommended the brand (e.g., most of the menopause research on black coshosh has been with the brand he recommended).
The recommended actions are designed to improve long term health, and I got the impression that weight loss is more of a side effect of improving health. It makes sense that someone's weight isn't going to change if there's some health problem that is the body's priority.
Over the past five years, I've gradually given up grains for the most part, but was still finding the siren's call of sugar to be overwhelming and was thinking about looking into an AA-like program for sugar. The recommendations for Happy Ho-Ho Hunters should take me bout 5 months to figure out if they work -- I'll will try to remember to update this review then.
As for the reviewers who found that they really weren't sugar addicts, bashing this book for that reason is as nonsensical as bashing the big book because you're not an alcoholic.
