I aloudread the Canzone on rain to my poetry group that's met for twenty years. Retired Smith prof, Irish foklorist, English anaesthesiologist (female), Portuguese personnel director, and me, Shakespearean and Brunonian/Italianist. Each brings a couple poems to share with the others, and we all read from a longer poem--the Odyssey, or this same translator's fine Dante, Inferno (his, the best).
I'm reading most in Italian.. "lungo i muri, con le facce di lenoni" in I morti e i veri:
I know what leno means, populating Plautus's Latin, but I thought it meant something else in the family palazzo. Raboni makes leaps in association which Palma encapsulates well.
So, he's done a good job suggesting the normality of a voice despite such diversions. Many recognizable subjects, crossing borders: the film theater with the variety of humanity looking to emerge from their daily boredom--the man standing in back, pacing, the woman alone, the handicapped girl, etc."Cinema di pomeriggio." One on a Tavaglio, one on Urban Renewal (Risanamento, also personal renewal), an Italian perspective, against. I too feel this because my hometown destroyed a famous writer's home a couple years before they built a kids' park in his honor, Theodor Geisel (Seuss).
