Writings that touch the pure-flaming heart of God ... from the men and women who walked with Him through the ages ... guiding into a deeper friendship with the "Father of Lights."Can I trust God in every circumstance? Can I rely on His promises--of protection, security, safety, provision, comfort--when I most need them? Is God always there for me? So many struggle to find confidence in God. Amy Carmichael stepped faithfully into the darkness surrounding her, and found the greatest "refuge" of all--the sheltering love of God, who is with us in all things. When Amy Carmichael (1867-1951) arrived in India, she had no idea the dangerous work ahead--to save young girls from cult prostitution in Hindu temples. Nor could she imagine the times of material need, physical danger, pain and debilitating illness, disappointment and attack by friends. From this crucible, she writes of her uplifting times with God--who calls us all to find safety in Him, to live honestly before Him, and to receive peace as we live in His presence.
I read this book during the time I was recovering from heart surgery. During the summer while all my friends were overseas and having amazing experiences, I was stuck in bed. This book kept me sane and put my present situation at that time in perspective.
I feel I've been on a journey with this book. Amy Carmichael's words through her experience have brought me to a place where I can echo the closing sentence - "I will say, today and every day, You are my hiding place!"
40 short devotional readings from the writings of Amy Carmichael. This was great. I’ve read a lot from/about Amy Carmichael and I admire how she thinks, lives, and writes.
I did not realize when I bought this book that it was a devotional with bits and peices of Carmichael's other works. It was still a good read, but I am going to look for one of her complete works next.
An absolutely fav daily meditation/reflection go to by the poetic Amy Carmichael of Ireland. Inspy she discloses from her own spiritual journey whilst working in India in the 1800's.
After 5 years of walking with God I know I need constant reminders of His sovereign faithfulness and His never-changing Promises. God knows we need reminders and He uses authors from all times to bring a new perspective to current seasons and understanding for all seasons if we are willing to seek. I found this gem when I needed it most- while walking through another wilderness I never knew- losing my dad to cancer. This devotional was brought to me when I needed a hand to hold every night while wondering and waiting on God’s will to be done. I am very greatful for this inspirational missionary’s testimony however minimal she actually revealed about what she was enduring, she gave God all the glory. I appreciate her dedication to minister for ages past her time.
I very much enjoyed my time with this each morning! I've been intrigued by Amy Carmichael from the myriad of references to her life in works by/about Elisabeth Elliot. I can see why the latter missionary was so enamored by Carmichael's writings and life! This devotional is a collection of snippets of different texts from Carmichael. Each day begins with a Bible verse and ends with a prayer from the compiler of the collection, David Hazard.
While not very in-depth (as most devotionals), I found this full of Biblical truth and would love to check out more entries in this series and discover more Christian authors through history.

There are books that you read, books that you read again, and those singular diamonds that you read again and again. This slender book has earned it's place on the bookshelf, in the suitcase, on the dresser. The amazing truths are in such wonderfully short chapters that they are enough to ponder and draw closer to Jesus. I've even tried reading the original works of Amy Carmichael and found they were not as exquisitely edited as this wonderful tome. Publishers, please make a hard copy. I would snap it up in an instant.
I am so glad that I found this book. It was a wonderful way to begin this year with daily readings and meditations from the writings of an amazing woman of faith who shared not only from her victorious moments, but also from her weakest, most vulnerable moments in ministry. These are encouraging and challenging messages for the soul journeying with Christ. I will be using this 40-day journey again in the near future, to go deeper with these meditations and truths.
This small book is a compilation from Amy Carmichael’s writings. It helps to chronicle her struggle, then acceptance of pain, loss and seemingly uselessness when she had her accident. She is a gentle soul who loved Jesus with all her heart and ministers to all with her aesthetically beautiful language. One quote I will strive to apply: the absent are safe with us.
I have read several devotionals, but this book was so inspiring. Amy made you see that you are not alone. We all have struggles, but in our struggles, God is always there, and we are not alone.
A beautiful forty day devotional with the writings of Amy Carmichael. Good for those quiet places in your heart. Fresh beautiful ways of connecting with God through simple, yet profound words.
