Kathy Kolbe and Amy Bruske have succeeded by trusting their instincts.
Kathy Kolbe is the global leader in discovering and accessing the power of human instincts. She’s done the brain research to prove the relevance of her Kolbe Theory of Conation to individual and organizational success. Kathy was the first person to connect conative behavior to instinctive drives, which she postulated as the source of the patterns of mental energy commonly known as a person’s MO.
Amy Bruske is the president of Kolbe Corp and leads seminars for business leaders throughout the world. She was recently named Business Owner of the Year by the Phoenix chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).
Kathy and Amy are both award-winning consultants and advisors to over 3,000 family-owned businesses, as well as to Fortune 50 companies, and both are also sought-after speakers. As mother and daughter, working together for more than two decades, Kathy and Amy have personally experienced every situation discussed in Business Is Business. Neither recalls a time when she wished she were working anywhere else.
My husband read this book and wanted me to read it because he thought perhaps it would help us understand each other. ;) Not only did it help with that, but it helped me understand myself. I appreciate it and may have given it 5 stars if it had been better written/organized. I might describe the concept of conation as “amazing,” as five stars would indicate, but I didn’t find the book itself amazing, although I still enjoyed it for the most part because of the subject matter. Kolbe’s concept of conation is still in development, but while I’m not sure what I think of all of it, there is definitely something to it. It has lots of practical application in not only understanding but also working with people. And yet, to satisfy my Fact Finder requires more details than Kolbe provides as a Quick Start. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you should read this book. :) Some readers may be annoyed that she promotes her testing services some. The tests are probably not needed to get a functionally good idea about where you and those you know best probably fit on the Kolbe A Index. She also has a little e-book published recently called Striving Zones that helps to fill out and slightly update her theory (not changing anything at the root, but changing some of the terminology to better communicate, and give a little more detail), which I found worth viewing.
I appreciate the Kolbe because it cares more about How one does things, rather than What they do or Why they should do them. I see this being especially helpful in building teams, working with other people, identifying learning styles, etc. For example, some folks might write a book starting with an outline, some might just start writing, some might start with research, some might start with physically experiencing the things they want to write about, etc. I care more about each person having godly ambition for His Kingdom than I do about how they do it.
That being said, my concern with all tools that define people into different types are: • not realizing that whatever the type is, it's just a stereotype. Stereotypes are helpful, but they can also box people in. • assuming people are never difficult, they are only different. Sometimes misunderstandings arise because two people are very different from each other. Sometime misunderstandings arise because one or both of the people are sinning. Sometimes it's a mix. It takes wisdom to decide between which is which.
Amazing! I'm having all my kids do this profile. I get myself, my husband and my older kids better already. I will definitely be exploring more from Kathy Kolbe. I am very excited to use the information to help my kids understand their innate way of doing things and use the information to create a synergistic family team.
