Every leader or aspiring leader wants an edge. Today that edge comes through the power of effective innovation capacity. Gone are the days where giant corporations can put up seemingly insurmountable barriers to entry. Innovative thinking organizations small and large can leapfrog them in both profitability and productivity given the right tools.
The prescriptive methodology in these pages will show you the positive impact that a well-designed innovation program can have on organizational culture, design, values, strategy, and human resources. If you want to be a leader in your industry, you need to consistently produce ideas and get the good ones from the mind to the market, early and often. This starts with you!
Next will show you what it takes to create a successful and sustainable innovation program, regardless of the industry or market you are in.
Thanks for taking a minute to get to know a little bit about me. As you might have picked up on, I’m passionate about innovation, sharing and learning. I like to have fun with it and make it useful for you. As you get to know more about my perspective on innovation, you’ll see that it’s both a mindset and a lifestyle; one that I hope you’ll embrace with me!I suppose now I need to spend a little time telling you why I’m qualified to talk to you about this subject and help you with your innovation efforts. I grew up in upstate New York (yes, it’s really cold here in the winter) and it’s also where I attended college. I received a Bachelor of Science in Management and Business from Skidmore College.
From there, I did what many business majors in upstate New York do, I moved to New York City to try and make it big on Wall St. This was my first lesson in the negative effects of following the masses. All told, I spent seven years in financial services in capacities ranging from real estate investment banking to institutional asset management and retail advisory services. They were all great experiences in different ways, I learned a ton and I wouldn’t go back and change any of it, but at the end of the day it wasn’t where I was cut out to be.
At that point I decided it was time for graduate school, so I packed up my things and moved to Virginia Beach to attend Regent University. I completed my MBA there and it’s where I first started learning about innovation. Of course, I had heard the word before, but that was the first time I learned what innovation really is and from there I was hooked!
As I neared the end of my Masters degree, the Dean of the business school offered me a job. I thought to myself, I may never get an opportunity like this again, so I went for it and I’m sure glad I did. In my time at the university, I designed continuing education certificate programs for the professional development of adult learners and I also managed customized corporate training and leadership development programs for organizations ranging from small non-profits to multi-national corporations throughout the United States. During that time I also completed my Doctorate in Strategic Leadership at Regent University.
In the Fall of 2014, I co-founded SBS Strategic Innovations, LLC. It’s a boutique consulting firm serving the needs of small and medium size organizations. I oversee the innovation and leadership development area of the firm. The other partners gave me the title of CEO, but I think that’s because I was late to a teleconference one day. I’m not big on titles, but I love engaging with people and helping them learn and grow, both professionally and personally. That’s why I’m also an adjunct professor for the School of Business and Leadership at Regent University.
In what seems to be a diminishing amount of spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, traveling and exploring new places, writing (yes, more of it) and a good round of golf.
Now I want to learn about you! So let’s connect. I’d love for you to share your story, learn what brought you to this site in the first place and of course, help you in any way that I can. It’s time to find a better way forward and make innovation the next great tool in your skill set. Are you ready to join me?
Dr. Seth Michael Stone has made an excellent and timely debut with Next. In an age of disruption and globalization, organizations and their leaders cannot afford to remain stuck in their old ways and rest solely on core competencies and expect to survive, much less thrive. Stone offers up a compelling and knowledgeable voice in the fields of leadership and innovation that will engage the reader and get them thinking about what comes next for their companies and organizations. There is something in this book to benefit everyone, from top level management at the largest multinationals, to the sole proprietor looking to expand his business. I look forward to hearing more from Stone in the coming years. Highly recommend.
