The German

Rate this book
This historical fictional love story follows the life story of a young German boy, who having been subjected to sexual abuse at the hands of three paedophiles on his sixteenth birthday, emerges from the drama to become one of Germany's top fighter pilots during the Second World War. It tells how he overcomes his ever-present nightmares and how his courage in dealing with his unfolding future comes to the fore. The continuing battle with his ghosts, and the very real dangers faced by the perils of war, are brought to bear when his unexpected love for a young Jewish girl becomes all consuming. Sadly, as in all wars, dreams are rarely fulfilled, and following a failed aerial combat mission on the Eastern Front, he abandons his aircraft over enemy territory, is captured by the Russians and interned in a Siberian Gulag. Whilst facing the grim reality of daily life in the Gulag, the Nazis deport the girl of his dreams to the dreaded death camp at Auschwitz. The story builds to a dramatic climax following a miraculous escape from the Gulag, when he sets about trying to find what has happened to his sweetheart.'
