From the NAACP Image award winner and national bestselling author Victoria Christopher Murray, a novel inspired by the seven deadly sins about a woman caught between an entertainment mogul with a shady past and his childhood friend who is out for revenge.

Tiffanie has lived a sheltered life in a very strict household with her pastor-grandfather and grandmother in Washington, DC. But when she meets Damon King, she falls for the successful entertainment business man despite his history as a drug dealer. Everyone sees nothing but the brightest future for the couple—but there’s one person who wants to destroy them.

Trey Johnson is Damon’s childhood best friend with whom he built quite a successful drug business. But when the game got hot and Damon decided to leave, Trey stayed and continued to sell drugs, until he was arrested and spent seven years in prison.

But now he’s out and able to attend the wedding. While Damon is thrilled to have Trey back and hopes to bring his best friend into his business, Trey has other plans. He blames Damon for his demise and plans to ruin him, even if that means bringing Tiffanie down as well.

Trey is sure he will succeed, but he doesn’t know that there will be deadly consequences. And at the end, there will only be one man standing…

Whew, where to start?!?! Obviously I had an idea of what the content would probably entail because of the title, but this story was told in a way that kept me interested and that I think almost everyone will be able relate to. Lust. Desire. Taboo. If folks are being honest then we will admit there was at least one time in our lives that we wanted something and/or someone we shouldn't.

"God will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear. And if you can bear it, you can get out of it."

The main character Tiffanie finds herself in an unexpected position and at times she made it hard for me to root for her and her well-being. Not only does this story focus on Tiff's dilemma but it also has very important lessons in regards to loyalty, friendship, and forgiveness. Murray weaves a seamless storyline that delivers a valuable message on how it is imperative that we turn to God when fighting a battle instead of trying to do it on our own. As always, Ms. Murray delivers on all of the elements that I enjoy in a book: fully developed characters, there's an emotional connection, and it makes you stop and reflect on your own life.

Lust is scheduled to be released in February 2017 and I'd highly recommend you visit your favorite retailer and preorder now!!

First of all, Victoria Christopher Murray is the queen of the opening sentence and she brings it again in Lust, the first of the Seven Deadly Sins series. After reading Lust, I am convinced Victoria Christopher Murray is a writer chameleon. I think she could write any genre she chooses, and do it well. A+ for the descriptions, the jargon, the authenticity of the characters. This was Bold writing.
As the title suggests, Lust is a gripping, highly sensual read. Ladies, keep your legs pressed close and the fan on high, because this is Grown Folks Business. A key lesson is that even when we know better and want to do better, our baser urges takes over and we can either ride it or fight it. Those of us who know how to truly fight temptation are without excuse. We also know there are consequences. The question is, can we live with them?
My absolute favorite scene was how Damon handled his business. He handled it well. Trust. There was only a minor minor interaction that I didn't think was needed for such a strong page-turner, but why am I nitpicking when a book delivers?
A question to consider: Is there a difference between lust and love and do we confuse the two?
A Couple of favorite quotes from Lust:
"The truth always end up shining bright when you watched and waited."
"...whether the devil is outside or whether he has wormed his way inside, he is defeated."
*** I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.

This one really boggled my mind ... I am not sure what the intent was with this book : was I supposed to feel any sympathy for Tiffanie at any moment of this story? I mean, really?? I am going to go on and say no cause there is no way this could have been the writer's intention seeing how just stupid the whole situation was. Like, I got it that the title of the book is "Lust", written in bold glittered letters. But if the whole plot is just about this woman lusting after some guy and then feeling all guilty about it and then ....nothing, I am not sure it needed to take more than 3 sentenced to get around it. I really could care less about "Tiff's" (ah) inner turmoil. Not that I hated her or found her despicable and all that finger-pointing and bible waving shaming that is supposed to be the social norm toward women in her situation. I actually thought she was a decent person, and my have been an interesting (flawed) character if not for the stupid plot she was put into. I was even a bit sad for her and wondered why on earth her so-called best friend hasn't advised her to do the first and only thing she should have done the minute she realized what was happening (even before Trey landed in there): talk to Damon and go see a freaking counselor. I mean there is no shame in seeking counsel from someone whose job is tu actually do that. And I am sure since Damon loved her so much he would have ended up listening and going with her. But I guess we would had missed the utter stupidity that was this story so...In the end, the only feeling I could muster from any one of those two is some pity : for Damon, who, except for the many time he called woman "female (ugh!), sounded and acted like a great guy (...until he did not) who didn't deserved to be treated the way he was (being lied and betrayed by people he trusted; and for Tiffanie who looked and sounded like a decent character trapped into a bad B romance novel. Trey being just a non-character I assumed I wasn't supposed to feel anything for him and so I didn't. also the ending was just...what was it supposed to be again? Like am I supposed to believe that those two are now just gonna be happy ever after, now that they've decided to keep lying to each other and literally burying their problem rather than face them and try and work at resolving them? Yeah, right....

This was a change of pace for VCM. I didn't see this coming. Lust is about one of the seven deadly sins...Tiffanie, Damon & Trey had a love triangle of sorts. Tiffanie and Damon are deeply in love until bizarre feelings come up. They say that things done in secret come to light but not everything will be revealed. The devil may not win or will he?

VCM proves why she is the literary goddess as she pushes the boundaries of her writing with this sexy romantic thriller. Definitely a book to read.

Victoria Christopher Murray's Lust is the first offering in her Seven Deadly Sins series. And has proven itself to be a book that one can easily come to form a rather involved love / hate relationship with.

The reasons:
Love:
There are several aspects of this novel which are very well executed. The first of which being the urban power couple. Self made man from the streets engaged to good Christian college girl plot line.
As portrayed by Damon King and his lady love Tiffanie.
It is in fact a pared down version of a very similar plot used by a little television show by the name of...
Oh, what was it again?
Ummmmm...
Power?
With Damon being a near twin to Power's Ghost. Sans drugs, of course.

Hate:
The obviousness of the "snake in the garden" role of Trey Johnson. Damon's "fresh from jail" best friend with a secret.
Yada...yada...yada...
The man doesn't even get to put two feet on the ground in D.C. Before becoming the "Big Bad Wolf" to Tiffanie's innocent "Little Red..."

Love:
The fact that Damon is a compassionate and loving leading man. Willing to do all that he can to help and care for those he loves at all costs.

Hate:
-The fact that Damon and Tiffanie have such a huge blind spot, when it comes to Trey.
Where is the common sense here?
When a man comes into your office making references to how "fine" your fiance is.
And can't seem to tear his eyes away from a PICTURE of her.
Come on!!!!!!

-Tiffanie's reaction to Trey is just completely over the top; from their first meeting.
I mean, I understand instant attraction. But to say that a man makes you orgasmic with nothing more than the mere brush of his lips to your cheek.
You know they have medication for that right?

-Trey and Tiffanie together are just as unbelievable.
For two people who find each other so undeniably irresistible
They find more ways to have "almost sex" than an angsty adolescent in a "first love in the suburbs" YA novel.
I mean...
She's an adult and he's an adult.
Can we have a little ADULT behavior.

-Can we please talk about the fact that Damon spends so much of the book being nothing more than a sacrificial lamb to EVERYONE and EVERYTHING going on around him.
Until...
He finally gets the information he needs to FINALLY put the pieces of the "three piece puzzle together.
Okkkkkay.

Lastly. There is the "resist the devil and he will flee" Tiffanie epiphany.
Otherwise known as "the place where common sense goes to die. "
I mean...
I'm just as much of a "come to Jesus moment" fan as the next person.
But Tiffanie NEVER tries talking to Damon about her lack of passion. Instead choosing to fake orgasms and be happy with all the material and social advantages of the relationship. While at the same time. Many times in fact, trying to have an illicit affair with his best friend. Without one thought to the moral ramifications. Only to quote scripture at the very moment that you seem to be losing the battle of resistance for good. All the while telling where to will listen, how understanding your man is. And how willing he is to do anything for you.
My oh my!
How very Tyler Perry of you.

This is a very enjoyable read. In much the same way that an episode of Judge Judy or Jerry Springer are enjoyable.
Good for their drama and entertainment values. Able to provide a very relevant, though somewhat stereotypical dash of commentary on very troubling issues.
But not quite making the grade in the way of intellectual or emotional maturity.

In short.
Drama - common sense + good quality writing + come to Jesus moment a la Tyler Perry = Lust.
Which will mean a good start to what will hopefully prove to be a wonderful series.

Lust was a five star read, but I'm not surprised because Victoria Christopher Murray is a master storyteller and knows how to hook her readers from beginning to end. The pacing was written in a way that left the reader savoring every word and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen with Tiffanie and if she would surrender to temptation and let the "devil" win.

While reading Lust, I often heard from other readers that this was different in relation to the author's other books, but I didn't see that at all. I felt that it was classic VCM. The pacing, the characterization, her keen ability to describe settings and make them such an intricate part of the story is what makes her writing style so unique. I loved it, and I'm looking forward to the next.

Lust was totally not what I expected from Victoria Cristopher Murphy, it was the opposite of her other books that I have read. It was a good shock and I enjoyed it. While reading I felt like it was going to be predictable but it was anything but. I loved how she had our minds thinking one thing was going to happen but something totally different happened. Lust can be a powerful thing and lead us down the wrong paths, we have to resist those temptations or face the consequences.

Tiffanie made me roll my eyes too many times. And, if at al possible, do not listen to the audiobook. Imagine al the characters voices in your head. Otherwise, a good book. I am starting Envy, now.

Great storytelling! Characters with realistic situations. I thought Tiffanie's feelings were well expressed as the content was focued on the title. Trey was a master manipulator & dangerous. Lust was truly in the air.... I felt Damon handled the situation well as his love for Tiffanie was deep. I enjoyed reading the first book in this Deadly Sins series & highly recommend!

Wow! This author has a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat. Throughout the book I was yelling at Tiff "don't do it". Trey was evil and I don't think Damon owed him anything. Tiff finally came to her senses and listened to God. Damon handled his business and kept his wife. Loved him. Great story.

This book was so good!!! That doggone Tiffanie had me wanting to ring her neck sometimes. I was angry, sad, and hopeful. When a book causes this much emotion in me, that means it's 5 star.

I must say the book was much better and different from the movie. I enjoyed the movie but I understand that the producers had to cut out a lot for the television. This was our April book club read and it was great to compare the book to the movie. Great discussion!!!

Damon and Tffanie are engaged to be married. Damon's best friend Trey is the best man.

Damon loves Trey and would love for him to come into business with him, but Trey has other ideas.

For some reason, Tiffanie can't stop thinking about Trey and this could cause trouble. Damon feels something is not right between Tiffanie and Trey but doesn't want to believe anything bad about his best friend and his fiancé.

Something is not right and when it all boils down, who will be the last man, or woman standing? Read: February 2017

Uncomfortably predictable. You really can read just the first paragraph of each chapter and keep up with the story. I was excited to start a new book series because it’s not my “usual” and because I have enjoyed other stories by this author. I was initially hooked with the series being about the seven deadly sins, but I doubt I will go on to book two at this point because book one was disappointing.

Lust is full of intrigue and suspense. I could not put this book down, which is common in all of Victoria Christopher Murray's books. She is a phenomenal story teller and master wordsmith.

I have steered away from reading urban books because of the profanity, violence, blood shed and graphic sex scenes. However, Lust is different. This is the kind of urban literature I would like to read, which why I appreciate Victoria Christopher Murray's writing style.

You guys. O_O What did I just listen to.

I'm low key mad the library labeled this book as romance because ... it's ... it's not, really. I'd say it's more WF ... maybe romantic elements?
It starts out well/like a romance but then it just ...
y'all.

So this is Christian fiction ... [I think google called it "urban Christian fiction"? 🙄 Which...

Look. So I listened to the audiobook of course - and I've liked Adenrele Ojo in the past but ... y'all. All the whining. ALL. THE. WHINING. And while I can't check for sure since I don't have the text - literally the heroine spends at least 10% of the book crying. (Honestly I'd say maybe 20-25% ... but just to be safe...) She spends A LOT of the book crying. A WHOLE FUCKING LOT OF IT.
Her. Crying.

And like yes - I'm actually NOT a monster - I do feel for her in part. But just like... I don't ...
I mean - so I've never been in this situation - but when the book starts out with the sex between her and her fiance being terrible and it having been terrible for (8 years? however long?) and she's all "but this is a good thing because bad sex means I won't be a fallen woman like my mother was" I was like "... oh dear."
I just ... WHY NOT TALK TO YOUR MAN ABOUT THE BAD SEX? WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN IF YOU NEVER SAY ANYTHING? Especially if you [supposedly] love him?
And then to ~magically just be like... hit utterly lust dumb by his friend. She loses all her damn sense. Loses her mind. Loses her morals. Loses all reservations.

It's a little vague but I believe it says she orgasms just from him hugging her - in a ~friendly airport meeting for the first time hug.
I just... really?

Really?

Also it kept writing the dude [Tre? -> not sure on spelling cuz audiobook] but that he kept "licking his lips" and I know it was supposed to be sexy but it just ... sounded gross.
I kept picturing more a SNL type skit thing than ... actually sexy dude. Also even if a sex on a stick guy KEPT DOING IT it'd just become more a tic than a sexy thing.
[Like creepy dude in harry potter...] => more lip licking mental pictures... *shudders*

It kinda annoying [Julissa?] didn't take Tiffanie's concern's seriously. But like ... Tiffianie wasn't entirely honest with her either... I just... I didn't get Tiffanie's actions especially considering how much she AGONIZES over EVERYTHING... until Tre pops up and it's like a flip is switched and she hates him anyway so just WHY?!
It wasn't believable to me.
I was also annoyed she was never really honest with Damon.

Really, I felt the entire relationship was doomed because she wasn't honest with him from the start. And then when shit really goes down - with Tre - and the texting and shit.

And then O_O how Damon handles things.

What ALSO bothered me was ... Tiffanie is all "I love my man I want to be married to him" but also like ... "he leaves me cold" -> her whole thing about her mom - the ... "love is toxic and it killed her" - I get it's what she believes but like ... yo. Friend. You ... therapy would be helpful.
So she ~gets over it to marry Damon - which then also to throw it all away on this random fuckboy (out for revenge) - I just ...
BUT - more - Tiffanie starts having ~better sex with Damon because she's thinking about Tre 🤦🏻‍♀️ - or she's horny because of Tre ...
but the BIGGEST ISSUE is how Damon is like "well now she's a whore because she's hot for sex - my wife is good and pure, not like "all the other females" he's fucked - because it was always just meaningless sex cuz he's a gangster.

Damon and Tre used to sell drugs but Damon stopped... it seems like Damon's dad was a dealer too which also like Damon's all "my dad taught me so much" but like - CLEARLY NOT/NOT SHIT YOU SHOULD STILL BE LISTENING TO OR LIVING BY ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU LEFT "THE GAME."

I just...
There are a lot of holes.
And again - most of it is Tiffanie crying because she feels bad about literally ripping her clothes of pretty much any time Tre shows his face.
[Bitch - just stop?]

So then the whole blackmail thing... and I was like FINALLY she's going to tell Damon [and oof when she thinks he's going to murder her O_o] - which she doesn't even say anything to him but it is resolved ...
BUT THEN

OH! And throw in all the sprinkling of donald trump and his ilk and the "both sides"ism like "all the elites - and the son of the former republican president" which O_o

I just...
What a mess.

I thought about DNFing it a few times but I kept hoping it would resolve well/I HAD to know how things would resolve?
But ...
I'm kinda straight mad I spent all this time on this book.

I will say in part the issue might've been the male narrator. It was just ... he was so GOOFY. Like ... think overdramatic Carlton from Fresh Prince.
I mean it. I was like "what are you doing?!" cuz he could/would read ~normally but then he'd do the overdramatic shit again and I was literally laughing at parts that were NOT meant to be funny.

Just ... basically no part of this book was for me. :\

[SEEEERIOUSLY though - the "all women are whores except my precious woman - but now she's a whore cuz she wants sex" 😒]

Oh - and the church scenes, and the prayer - a lot of praying. So much of it too was like ... and then calling Tre the devil - I guess if you're all "he's literally the manifestation of the devil tempting me" from the Christian POV ... but I felt it also took away a lot of Tiffanie's own culpability.

JESUS WANTS YOU TO OWN YOUR SHIT, TIFFANIE.

I enjoyed this book.
I mean it is a work of fiction, so if you're looking for something other than a well put together story, then you should not get ready to read this book about LUST.
I really enjoyed the push and pull of good and evil.
Sin and shame.
Love and Blessings.
Commitment and relationships.
Covenant and purity.
Brotherhood and Friendship.
When does the understanding that marriage overrides everything?
And what exactly do you think that the Grandmother could "see" ?
I for one am in suspense for the continued stories in the Deadly Sins Series.

I have been a fan of Victoria Christopher Murray for years. When I started this book, it was moving slow for me but I was curious as to how she was going to weave this story, so I kept reading. I don't know when things shifted but then I couldn't put it down. It took EVERYTHING for me not to go to the end of the book to see how this mess was going to end. All I am going to say is I was shocked! I know there is no sequel planned but I definitely have questions. I really liked Damon but cautiously. Tiffanie made me so mad but I am struggling with that. Well, on to Envy.

SMH

The book started off a little slow, but quickly pulled me in. Women who seemingly have it all are the ones who seem eager to put their comfort in jeopardy. I have never met someone who had me addicted to them after our first encounter. Damon loved and spoiled his woman. Trey had the swag and cockiness that had Tiffanie rethinking her whole life. I'm sure that many have experienced lust at some point in their lives. You just have to decide if acting on that lustful feeling is worth it. The book was well written and I will definitely read more from the author.

Knowing VCM... she went in a different direction on this one and I like it. I really liked Damon and Tiffanie together. Tiffanie had other ideas which led her down a one way path. Damon's childhood friend and ride or die held on to some past trauma with Damon that affected every area of there lives. When you live by that sword. This was fast paced, steady and mysterious from beginning to end. I had a good time reading this work.. bravo..

Unusual that it took so long to complete a VCM book. Definitely not her normal writing style, and despite the characters being interesting it failed to truly captivate me. I was into it but not committed enough to focus entirely on it. I'm definitely intrigued to see how the rest of the deadly sins series will go.
