A dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers, the seven members of The Umbrella Academy spent their childhoods fighting evil and honing their extraordinary gifts under the tutelage of their guardian and mentor, Dr. Reginald Hargreeves. Here is one story from their past where they learned a powerful lesson and fought a mysterious murderer.
Conceived and written by Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance), The Umbrella Academy features interior art by Gabriel Ba (Casanova) and Dave Stewart (Hellboy) and covers by multiple Eisner Award-winning artist James Jean (Fables).
The Umbrella Academy debuts with a twelve-page story set before the start of the ongoing series.

I chose to ebook this since it was free on my KU and I LOVE the show on TV. I didn’t realize it was going to be a comic book, but I stuck with it just to check it out and bring back a little nostalgia. It was fun!
Gave this free teaser issue a shot, because I keep seeing the TV show. Haven‘t watched it yet. The comic was ok. The art is a bit flat, but nice enough. Too short to really say something about the story. Alas, this proves to me again that I do not really like superheroes.
More than a little disappointing as the above synopsis explains far more than the comic did. I liked the artwork and lettering but the cover artist could have made better use of the space, it looked a bit "under done". The story however was totally WTF!?!
My husband and I started watching the new Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy. It promises to be an intriguing show, so I looked up the series on Amazon and downloaded two free graphic novel teasers. [The Umbrella Academy #0] was originally titled …But the Past Ain’t Through With You and was issued on Free Comic Book Day 2007. The title is a lyric in the song “Kill All Your Friends” by My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way’s band. The premise of this graphic novel series is that on the same day, forty-three women who were not previously pregnant gave birth to children at the same time. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a wealthy scientist and entrepreneur, adopted seven of the children. With the six children who had supernatural abilities, Hargreeves formed The Umbrella Academy to teach them to fight crime.
In this short graphic novel, Séance, Rumor, and Spaceboy are perplexed to find Rumor’s dead body. Meanwhile, on TV, the Murder Magician claims to have killed Rumor and introduces his Murderbot to the audience. The Umbrella Academy shows up at the studio to deal with the Murder Magician and find that Monocle (Hargreeves) is there as well and may somehow be involved in the mystery.
More of a sneak peek than a prequel to the series, I found …But the Past Ain’t Through With You interesting, but incomplete. I suppose this is what I should expect for something this short.
--- This is a free comic book day taster of the Umbrella Academy universe. The art is interesting and it give us an basic idea of the group dynamics even if it might be a little confusing without knowing the characters. Only for fans.
I was somewhat indifferent to the first volume of The Umbrella Academy – there were some interesting details, but it was lacking what was needed to suck me in deep – yet it did leave me willing to give the prequel story a try.
Although another quick read, it did not clear up any of the questions I had after finishing the first volume. It was interesting enough, yet it was another great concept that wasn’t all it could have been due to the lack of information.
I’m sure fans of the series will enjoy this, though.
Uhm I might be trash over this tv-series. I might have downloaded this kindle comic book just because of that. I may not even like comic books normally.
Since this is only a few pages and it took me like five minutes to read I can't really give a big review. I can say that I won't read the other volumes since I don't like comic books. I can also say that I really like the world and the characters in the TV show. Especially Klaus and Five are my favorites. And I will for sure watch the second season because I have MANY questions and there were many things that even though I just rolled with it and it's fine, I'd like more information about it. So the tv show is for sure 4 stars, but this isn't the place to review tv shows ;)
A penas es como la introducción a los personajes, así que no hay mucho que decir. Ni siquiera puedo decir qué personajes me intrigaron más y así. Lo único es que The rumor tiene un poder interesante.
Wanted to try the comic book out as I love the series. A short snippet to the Umbrella Academy, not sure if it is the best way for someone new to this world to be introduced to it.
Mini cómic que introduce un poco lo que era el trabajo en equipo aun cuando el monóculo seguía vivo, el mago como villano se ve muy bien, ojala los adapten a la serie.
This is a free teaser about The Umbrella Academy. I don't have any clue about the comics, I've only watched the show and it was pretty good despite some weird teen drama elements. Not going to lie, this made me curious about the graphic novels. I would see myself read it someday.
Edición argentina pensada para regalar en el poco extendido día del comic book gratis local. Revista que traduce dos historias cortas y además incluye la intro a cargo de Grant Morrison que se salteó en la versión en tomo.
The Umbrella Academy Plot/My Thoughts: This was not the best introduction just coming into the series. All I understood of it was that someone named Rumor was supposed to be dead, but then (surprise, surprise!) she isn’t. And The Murder Magician (which is a pretty cool villain name) is on television boasting about how he killed Rumor and then introduces his murder bots to the audience. He’s defeated by the superheroes. Ad we meet someone named Monocle. This feels like we’re starting a series a couple of issues in. We don’t get the backstory of what happened to Rumor. We don’t even get who she is, or who these people are. Or must confusing of all why there's a dead body of her but then she's obviously not dead at the end. Are we dealing with holograms? We don't know. And that is probably the most interesting element of this 15-page graphic novel. The characters and the plot are just thrust at us with no prequel (to the prequel) or previous knowledge how they came to be. It just wasn’t enough for Issue O. I’ll still read the rest, but this didn’t do anything to generate interest in the rest of the series.
