When Tommy the cat witnesses a murder taking place right beneath his favorite elm tree, at first he’s not too worried. After all, humans will do these things, and as long as his own human keeps the kibble and the milk coming, life goes on. But when the murdered woman’s ghost comes haunting him and accuses him of gross negligence by not interfering when he had the chance, things definitely take a turn for the mysterious.
Nic has a background in political science and before being struck by the writing bug worked odd jobs around the world (including but not limited to massage therapist in Mexico, gardener in Italy, restaurant manager in India, and Berlitz teacher in Belgium).
When he’s not writing he enjoys curling up with a good (comic) book, watching British crime dramas, French comedies or Nancy Meyers movies, sampling pastry (apple cake!), pasta and chocolate (preferably the dark variety), twisting himself into a pretzel doing morning yoga, going for a run, and spoiling his big red tomcat Tommy.
He lives with his wife (and aforementioned cat) in a small village smack dab in the middle of absolutely nowhere and is probably writing his next ‘Mysteries of Max’ book right now.
Nice Saint has a knack for writing a story featuring cats, not as detectives per se, but spies. He silly hoomans don't realize there's a whole agency of felines and their consultants keeping an eye and occasionally a claw out for us. Tim, a 'large bond's kitty was just as unaware. Chilling in his favourite tree onese night, Tim notices a couple talking about their torrid affair. Enter Dana, the local feline femme fatale. Whilst chatting up Tom, neither notices the murder going on below. Suddenly, a young girl is lying dead in the ground. Or is she? When the body is discovered in a park pond, Tim finds himself recruited by Dana into the FSA (Feline Spy Agency). With a seemingly dull-witted partner, Stevie, Tom is determined to find the killer with the pimple on his nose. Steve's human's local play ends up involving Tom's human and the race is on. With Dana hiding a secret, Tim determines it's up to him to track down the killer
The Whiskered Spy was not enjoyable. It was both confusing and disappointing.
I typically try to avoid including spoilers in my reviews but I feel I would be remiss to not briefly explain in the vaguest of terms possible the reasoning behind my low rating and disappointment in the book.
Having grown up around cats and dogs, the characters - Tom, Dana, Frank, Stevie and Brutus were realistically portayed by the author but when you reach the end of the book you find yourself reliving that moment in history on the popular show Dallas when the entire season was revealed to be a dream. It's never a good thing to leave your audience scratching their head while uttering, "Say what?"
Wonderful read which is what I expected to experience when purchasing a Nic Saint story.
Wonderful read which is what I expect to experience when purchasing Nic Saint’s truly imaginative creations. I just subscribed to the duos newsletter to be apprised of new series they will offer. Kudos for them!
Very cute. Similar to the Mysteries of Max series by the same author. I really like this and hope the authors continue this series. Mystical cats solve crimes and are detectives/spies. I would like to see where this goes. I hope they make this less comedic than the Max series. It is a fun light read for cozy and cat lovers alike.
You can tell this was an early work of Nic Saint’s. It’s a bit far-fetched & the continuity is somewhat lacking. I’m glad I read it last, after reading all 60 Mysteries of Max books & stories, otherwise I might not have read them. If you read this, please go on to the Max books & stories, they are much better & keep you looking for the next & wanting more.
I'm disappointed in this because the Mysteries of Max series is so cute and well thought out that i was hoping for more of the same. This was just weird and uninteresting to follow along with.
THE WHISKERED CAT by Nic Saint. I' m one that loves the JOE GREY books, so this was a delight for me. Tommy and his friend Dana, enjoying their tree top view. When two humans, disrupt his Cat Guild Rulebook, of stopping under his elm tree. He was leaving, when they said" take him out". They wanted to be together, but, this person wouldn't allow it. The guy consoles her, and then he's not. The cats don't know what to do, of what they saw. Tommy's going home, Dana doesn't want him to, while they are arguing, the scene below is cleared. So,now what. A delightful humorous look into the world of cats, observing humans. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
The story, while rambling at times, is told from Tom's POV. Tom is a cat. He loves to hang out in his favorite tree in the park. One day while doing this he is joined by Dana. Both watch as 2 humans stand under them and one murders the other. Tom is recruited to be a spy-in-training. Their mission to protect humans. His first case: to find the murderer. This is story gets funnier and funnier as it moves along especially when Tom gets the ability to read minds! The ending was a real twist, but it sets this series up to continue on, which I hope the authors do. Join Tom and his cat friends and one poodle who thinks he's a police dog in this rollicking mystery! My only negative comment was that the writers identify Dana as a Siamese in the first chapter, but then write her as a Persian a couple of chapters later. There's a big difference between these 2 breeds. I should know, I own a beautiful Siamese!
this is a Arc review , given in exchange for an honest review . so what do you do when you find yourself in a midist of a murder or is it . and why are they replacing both female and male roles in the towns play . and what do you do when your a cat and see a murder happen . is it a trick of the eyes or reality . find this and much more when you buy and read and review this humorous book .
Not a big cat lover but Tommy may have swayed me just a bit. I found this to be very funny as it is written from the cat's POV. Strange you might say but it works. In this funny look at murder through a cat's eyes and trying to get the human world to understand what you are trying to convey was pure fun. Especially when the ghost comes haunting him. I have found a new favorite author
Cat detectives are in a genre of its own. That seemed promising. However, I expected fun, new, cat-chy phrases. As another reviewer pointed out, a MC breed was changed mid story. And how did a month old amphitheater have dust and cobwebs in a room? So details were inconsistent. Kind of raw. A second edition or polish should ... clean up dead rats in dirty ducts ...
This is a very nice book that combines cats and humans from a cat's point of view. Very well-written and great characters. I can't wait to read the next.
