From the author of the “clever, creative, and sweetly delicious” (Kirkus Reviews) The Coincidence of Coconut Cake comes a novel about a frustrated wife and mother who hatches a scheme to reignite her marriage—and risks everything in a gamble she hopes is a sure bet.

When Milwaukee-area wife and mother MJ Boudreaux notices her husband Chris seems more interested in the casino than her, she’s more bothered that she isn’t upset than by her husband’s absence. She picks up poker as a way for them to spend more time together—and reignite their marital flame.

Although the game doesn’t give her the quality time with Chris that she’d hoped, MJ finds she has a knack for it. Increasingly unhappy at home, she turns to the felt top of the poker table for comfort. Intoxicated with newfound freedom, MJ begins spending more time at the gambling tables and less with her family, finally carving out for herself a place outside her role of wife and mother.

After a string of great wins, MJ finds herself in Vegas, attracting the attention of a certain magnetic poker star. But when she’s forced to choose between her family and her new exciting lifestyle, the stakes may be higher than she thought and MJ will have to play her hand carefully…or risk losing it all.

3.5 stars. First of all, I liked Love, Luck and Lemon Pie because it was about MATURE WOMEN... yep, with kids in their late teens, with harried marriages, with somehow, somehow one of them, MJ, realizing that a wedge has crept in between herself and her husband, Chris and she can't pull them back together.

Chris likes to play poker at the club, so MJ naively thinks that joining him might give them a chance to spend adult time together. Thing is, she gets plunked with the beginners and Chris heads off with the experienced dudes. So...MJ decides to practise, then play in a tournament... and Chris is off chatting to her former never bff who has moved back to town.

I know... this sounds BORING... but for old married ladies whose marriages get a krink in their Kaboose, it is actually a pretty sweet piece of mid-life chick lit. Those marital dead spots, the clod hopper dumb inside "who am I" spots, the too much routine and needing some razzle before forever losing the dazzle- this little engaging novel covers the gamut. It was a pleasure watching this twenty year marriage revive itself - yes, look love in the face and see it was there all along.

Light, easy chair reading only!

Luck, Love & Lemon Pie by Amy E. Reichert is a 2016 Gallery Books publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

I loved The Coincidence of Coconut Cake so much I could hardly wait for Amy E. Reichert’s next book. I have to say the wait was worth it. This is my kind of book in every way imaginable when it comes to contemporary fiction.

MJ’s marriage is in a rut. On her twentieth wedding anniversary, she finds herself waiting for hours for her husband, Chris, to show up for their lunch date, consuming an entire custom made lemon pie, an anniversary tradition, while she waits. But, Chris is late due to a poker tournament and can only stay a short while because he won and needs to get back to the tables for the next round. MJ should be crushed, but instead, she feels relieved. She can go home and take a hot bath and read a book. What does that say about the state of her marriage?

So, MJ decides to kick start the relationship by taking up poker, something she and Chris can enjoy together. But, things go horribly awry as an old nemesis returns, and MJ and Chris find themselves drifting further and further apart.

As a person close in age to MJ, and enjoying a long marriage myself, I could really relate to the ups and downs of married life. There are peaks and valleys, and times when you fall in love with each all over again. This is something MJ acknowledges in her marriage, but right now, she’s having a pretty hard time summoning that ‘in love’ feeling again, and Chris is not much help.

I could understand MJ’s feelings and admired her tenacity to at least try and rekindle the flame. Chris was a guy I had my doubts about, and had a hard time understanding his treatment of MJ. So, I must say I rather enjoyed his little wake up call, and was super happy when he starts to work redeeming himself.

The secondary characters all played their roles perfectly, especially Tammie, a woman who is hard to like, but one I felt confident could change if given half a chance. MJ’s mother was a riot and I loved her sage advice.

This is a terrific story all the way around. It’s realistic, honest, and emotional, and could certainly work as a cautionary tale. It is so easy to fall into this trap, so remember to always be diligent and never take your significant other for granted. But, the thing that stands out at the end of the day, is that this story is a tried and true love story and is proof that everlasting love is entirely possible, but you must to be willing to work for and fight for it.

This book....don't waste your time! I grabbed it thinking it would be a fun read (I hate the label, but chick-lit) with food mixed in. NO, no....nope. Thankfully, I got a free copy at work, unfortunately, I kept reading hoping something would redeem the book from the floor where I threw it when it was all draggingly OVER. Again. Wrong. I really need to stop being so kind and optimistic.
This is the story of a headstrong mother/wife who gets into poker because her husband is interested (for a very short moment) and then becomes so addicted she loses her family....goes to Las Vegas for a tournament....and her family falls crumbling down. The lemon pie? a gimmick. It is mentioned 3 times in the whole book...not worth being in the title. Gah. This book!
Things I disliked:
1) Female main character is unlikable--- she is just plain clueless and dumb (sorry, but who is deathly allergic to something, yet pays no attention to what she is eating/drinking?!) and really has nothing to do all day--- as she keeps saying she is a bad housekeeper and can't cook.
2) Husband is unlikable---- he is portrayed as faultless at the end--- all blame on his wife, yet he is AT FAULT. He is never around and pays little attention to his family. If the author had put in more details about how amazing he was....before trying to show his other side....
3) No gorgeous man who can have his pick of woman goes for a middle-aged MARRIED woman who has pushed him away....I know that sounds sexist and like I am generalizing, but in fiction (chick-lit) this does NOT happen and is not buyable. The main character? Is NOT so amazing he should pursue her.
4) Poker, poker, poker--- I am sorry, but someone who grew up playing poker does NOT need a refresher from her husband...she knows how to play. It was condescending. And then--- her husband went from never around to then blaming her for having a hobby?
5) Private jet!!!?? Sure. (rolling eyes)

I hate books that don't jive. This story did not. So many details that should have been edited out--- so many details that didn't work to build up the characters' background...a story that just didn't work.
Yes, I am negative. No, I do love a good story.
Don't read. Don't kill a tree. Please.

Catching up…

I remember how much I enjoyed this author’s book, “The Coincidence of Coconut Cake,” so much so I asked my husband if he would be willing to make her actual recipe coconut cake. He did. After all, he is the baker in our family. And, it actually was very good.

So, when I received this book as a donation to my Little Free Library Shed, I was hopeful that maybe this one may also be a delicious addition. Of course, it did have recipes, Anniversary pie (lemon), lemon syrup and whipped cream. 😋

But could the story also be as good as the pie?

Unfortunately, the book’s theme and plot fell flat. It was hard to connect to the characters or feel sympathy or empathy about their plight. I didn’t like the setting, or the direction the characters chose to take with their life choices. It was like watching a poorly written Hallmark movie, knowing a predictable ending was coming. And, it did.

2.5 stars because there was a recipe, but rounded down for the plot

As MJ Boudreaux sits anxiously waiting for her very late husband to meet her to celebrate their anniversary at a restaurant to which she has brought a lemon pie, lovingly made by someone other than herself, a pie which at one time during their long relationship had been a symbol of their love and affection for each other many years ago, she begins to realize they are no longer those two people.

Yes, work, children and life have taken its toll on them, always having to put other's needs before their own. Especially MJ who not only works, but takes care of the house, children, husband and dog. Her husband Chris seems no worse for the wear as he appears content to work and play poker, something he enjoys so much that he is late for their lunch! So as MJ sits waiting, she decides things need to change in their marriage. They are drifting away from each other. She can feel it. They must try and have more in common, go on date nights, anything to rekindle the spark they use to have.

It's then she realizes poker may be the glue she needs to hold this relationship together! She will learn and play so they can go together. Not a novice to the game, she worked at a bar during college, where she met Chris, and her mother owned a bar when she was a child which use to hold poker games. She did use to watch them play. At first Chris is wary of MJ's plan, especially when they have a friendly game at home which does not go so well, but Chris agrees spending more time together, even if it is at at casino might be enjoyable.

After her first poker experience at the casino, MJ decides she needs some practice. She discovers she may actually have a knack for cards and reading opponents. She begins going separate from Chris to hone her skills, so much so that she decides to enter a poker tournament whose prize is a trip to Las Vegas and lessons from the top poker player who also is a handsome bachelor.

Chris seems supportive at first, but when MJ begins to neglect not only him, but their children in order to spend time practicing at the casino, the rejection hits him hard. And when MJ wins the tournament he decides not to go to Las Vegas with her.

An idea which was suppose to bring them together, now seems to have separated them even further. With MJ going to Las Vegas and Chris staying home with the kids, the situation goes from bad to worse. What happens in Vegas is suppose to stay in Vegas right? But not in this case! Will MJ be able to repair her marriage before it is irrevocably broken? This may not be as easy as a simple slice of lemon pie!

Reichert, author of the Coincidence of Coconut Cake has once again mastered the telling of a love story with characters who are a bit flawed and yet she is able to teach us all lessons in life and love.

This book is my least favorite of all of Amy E Reichert’s books. Not too interested in the poker world (and I found myself skimming parts of the book) so I was kind of bored with the whole storyline but I kept reading till the end. Just ok.

I adored the quirky romance Reichert delivered in The Coincidence of Coconut Cake so I was eager to begin Luck, Love & Lemon Pie. Set in Milwaukee and we enter the Boudreaux home. Chris and MJ have settled into a routine and are busy raising two teenage children. When, Chris is late for their anniversary lunch it sets in motion doubts about their relationship. MJ attempts to rekindle their connection but miscommunications, trouble from an old nemesis, and plans backfires MJ is unsure where she stands.

All marriages go through phases and having been married for close to 29 years I can attest to this. Sometimes we are like new lovers, other times like roommates who bask in holding hands and watching a movie. We both have our own interests and things we enjoy together, but sometimes life gets hectic and we forget to make time for us as a couple. This is where MJ and Chris find themselves.

Chris enjoys playing poker, and MJ decides to learn so they can spend time together. With things going south at home, MJ loses herself in the game. She discovers a renewed confidence in herself and a sense of accomplishment as she begins winning. She pushes herself and enters a competition. While she is becoming more confident in herself, it also leaves her craving what she and Chris once shared. I felt for MJ, but was frustrated by their lack of communication. Even Chris had me shaking my fist for being closed lipped. So much could have been resolved if we just locked them in a closet for a few hours. Bwahaha!

I found the threads on the game of poker interesting from finding tells to strategies. Reichert shared just enough to get us into the game and understand its allure. She offered insight about what draws folks to the felt and it fit MJ perfectly. I do wish Chris was a little more fleshed out, particularly with his poker habits and secretiveness.

Reichert touched on many topics from jealous to the pressure and insecurities a stay at mom faces. While I did not always agree with the actions MJ took the author did a great job of making me understand her. Admittedly I worried we might cross the line when a certain sexy poker player entered the picture and we did indeed teeter that line, but his attentions helped MJ focus on what really mattered. Funny, sexy, and outrageous he boosted MJ's confidence.

The back of the book contains a recipe for Anniversary Pie and questions for Book Club. I for one cannot wait to bake the pie!

Luck, Love & Lemon Pie wrapped up with character growth and tender moments that made me smile. Reichert delivered another heartfelt novel with realistic characters who drew me in and allowed the outside world to slip away.

We step into the life of MJ and Chris who have been married for over 20 years and have fallen into that trap of boring existence and not taking care of each other in the manner that they should. Nothing in common anymore, working overtime, putting the kids first, and basic existence plague this couple.

As you’re reading the story I found myself reflecting on my own marriage and correlating with the authors writing. I’m sure it’s not a popular position that MJ took things a bit too far, but I can also relate to why she did that too.

Thankfully, it wasn’t all a loss and we are treated to a heartfelt HEA. While not intense or overly dramatic, this book does reflect what a marriage can look like after it’s been ignored for a bit.

This book is a delightful reminder of the fact we need to learn to take care of our spouse as much as we take care of the kids, work, housekeeping, and other items that seem to get on the list first.

A wonderful book that speaks to the heart of marriage and the importance of working together to make it stronger every day. Amy has a lovely talent in being able to tell a story women can relate to. A lovely summer read…. And make sure to check out the recipe at the end! Yum

MJ Boudreaux is feeling like the sparks are missing in her marriage. When her husband appears late to their twenty-anniversary dinner, she knows she must do something to improve their relationship. Since her husband Chris enjoys playing poker, she decides she can join him at the tables and learn it herself. This could be something they could share together. To her surprise, she finds out she is good at it and little by little she starts spending more time at the casino.

To make matters worse, her husband is hiding something involving her college nemesis. MJ doesn't know what it is but she starts having doubts about how faithful Chris really is. When she wins a trip to Las Vegas, she decides to go and here she runs into interesting characters including the current poker champion who makes it very clear he wants more from her if she is willing.

MJ must make a serious decision of what to do next. Try to fix her marriage or move forward with someone new.

I loved The Coincidence of Coconut Cake and I was looking forward to reading Luck, Love & Lemon Pie. It's hard for me to say it but I didn't love it. I had some issues clicking with both main characters.

The writing was smooth but there just wasn't enough romance in it. MJ was frustrated with her marriage and at first, it felt like she was on the brink of giving it up until she believes her husband might be interested in someone else.

For his part, I never felt like I got to know Chris well. I do know Chris had as much blame as MJ for things not working right in their relationship. The lack of communication was their downfall. I don't agree with the way things were handled after MJ came back from her Vegas trip. In my opinion, they needed marriage counseling to fix what was missing.

Cliffhanger: No

Totally gutted over this novel. I read Reichert's first novel in less than 24 hours and absolutely loved it! I went running to the computer to find more by her! When I was approved for this novel I think I actually did a happy dance!!!

I didn't stay dancing for long. I sometimes actually like "chick lit"...okay, so maybe this will be the only time I admit to that....

butttttttt....this novel is one of the reasons I will rarely admit it. You have a middle aged lady who is all but ignored by her husband and children. She gets drunk, basically decides to ignore her family and seeks to "find herself" by doing exactly what has made her feel so unworthy to begin with. Not spending time with her husband, not spending time with her children and ignoring their wants and needs.

No one is saying that you need to devote yourself 100% to others and ignore yourself. However, I feel no sympathy for someone that complains about how they feel unappreciated and then precedes to go off and "unappreciate" their own loved ones and justifies it as it's about time she did something for herself.

I don't think you need another man outside of your husband to make you feel attractive. I don't think your husband should only find you attractive once someone else does. AAMOF you should feel attractive all by yourself...no need to rely on ANYONE to do that for you...

I think there is a happy medium and that author took the easy way out and went to the extreme.

Sorry, I absolutely loved her first book...and I will keep her on my radar for the future, but there wasn't really anything I found to like in this novel. Women often sell themselves short in real life..and then go to the extreme to correct that...This novel is a perfect example of how to do just that...

I loved this book! And far more than I expected I would. I was hooked immediately by the cover and title from the very first time, but by the description I wasn't sure if I would have an appreciation for the plot. Simply because poker bores me, I don't like it...which might have to do with the fact that I can't play worth my life. And there was quite a bit of poker in this book. But I am soooooo glad I read it.
Amy Reichert is such a talented author. (I was actually interested in the poker) I was completely swept away in the story. The characters were so flawed, real, and lovable, and relatable at the same time. There were so many instances where I would be so angered by a character's choices, but they were also so relatable to me at the same time.
Flawlessly written, this book had just the right amount of romance, family, jealously, and love.

I absolutely loved this novel -- it had everything -- laughs, a few tears, a little romance, jealousy, friendship and love. What more could you want to spend a few hours to take you away from your own problems? MJ and Chris have been married for 20 years and have two teenage kids. Chris has been spending more time at the casino playing poker than he has been spending with MJ so she decides that she needs to start playing poker, too, so that they can spend some quality time together. Boy does her plan backfire! Because of her history (which I won't go into because of possible spoilers), she is a fantastic poker player and soon becomes hooked on the game and HER time at the casino. Read the book to find out if Love or Poker wins the game of life for MJ and Chris. Its a great read!

How do you recapture the romance and attention you once had after many years of marriage? MJ and Chris are drifting away from each other. MJ must find a way to rekindle that spark they had when they first met. Chris enjoys hours at the local casino. MJ decides to find out what the big deal is with playing poker. She's a quick learner and discovers she has a real knack for the game. She meets a renowned poker champion and starts to enjoy his lavish attention. Will this attraction lead to the destruction of her marriage or will Chris and MJ find their way back to one another.
Told with humor and insight, this was a believable, enjoyable read.

Review
MJ and her husband Chris are going through some rough times in their marriage. One reason is Chris's love of poker which seems to keep them apart. The bigger issue is MJ doesn't really mind. In an attempt to rekindle their relationship MJ tries to use playing poker to find common ground. Instead as MJ starts to play more and find something for herself she puts more space between herself and her husband and kids. After winning a trip to Vegas to play in a tournament which MJ goes on without her family she will have to figure out what is truly important to her.

Another book, another case of mixed feelings. I wanted to love this. I went in thinking I would love this. I came out feeling meh to good on it.

MJ was someone at first I felt bad for. We start off with her being stood up but her husband. This automatically had me on her side and kind of hating her husband. I was rooting for her plan to rekindle the flames in their relationship to work. I saw where she was coming from thinking a shared interest would be a great way to do that. But then she got all wrapped in poker herself and kept putting off her relationship issues. So pretty much at a point, I didn't really care for either MJ or Chris. That is never good. Then I started to feel bad for Chris because she kept ignoring and putting of him. She was kind of hiding her wedding ring and getting jazzed up for poker.  Then there was some jealousy issues and temptation on her trip. It was all just kind of f*cked.

There were relationship dynamics I did enjoy, though. I enjoyed seeing the family dynamics with their kids. Their son was super sweet and their daughter was too but she was a bit older and having her own issues. They were old enough to get there was something going on with their parents so that was interesting. I also like MJ with her two best friends. They were fun, honest and loyal to each other.

While this one wasn't a big hit with me, I did still enjoy it enough and got through it rather quickly. I am still excited to read her other book, The Coincidence of Coconut Cake.

Review
A reunion book? I am in! I was so looking forward to this one and then I was so disappointed. This is a case where the premise was so good for me and then the characters were pretty much all awful. I mean you don't have to like characters to like a book but they can definitely bring it down.

We have 5 friends coming back to their old college house at the behest of their old friend who passed away years ago. They have been living separate lives and haven't stayed in touch. When they get together lots of old feelings and events are brought up again. They need to deal with these old feelings so they can move on with their lives.

The female characters - Lindy, Annie, and Catherine - were probably the ones who annoyed me the most. I think it has to do with that they were probably the most involved and a lot centered around them. Lindy was selfish, outspoken and rude. Annie seemed a little clueless, weak and obsessed with appearances. Catherine came off as a controlling bitch who didn't listen enough to her husband or really anyone else. Owen, her husband, wasn't necessarily annoying but childish during the weekend and not capable of standing up for himself to his wife. Colin, while actually a central part of the overarching story, was just there for me. I ever felt like we got to know him much. He didn't add anything for me.

I think we were supposed to see these characters grow or come to realizations about their lives and, in the end, I guess we did. Still, I didn't quite believe it or think it would stick. If there was ever a need for an epilogue it was here!
The two characters I did enjoy were their dead friend Bea who we get to know a little in the beginning and through their stories and Leon, Lindy's kind of person (it's complicated). Bea was kind and loyal. She tried to keep the group of friends together - even after death. Leon, while high most of the time we spent with him, was a truth teller and laid back as anything. I was glad for the two of them in the book.

It took me a little while to get into this but it did move nicely after that. Despite my dislike of the characters, I did quite like the writing and how the story progressed and was told through the different viewpoints. While this wasn't my cup of tea, I think that there will be many who enjoy this storyThis review was originally posted on Rebel Mommy Book Blog

A delicious and witty story about a woman who learns how to play poker as a way of reconnecting with her husband and instead finds a part of herself she never knew existed. This book will resonate with every wife and mother who wonders what else is out there or if she can find happiness where she least expects it. So fun!

I found Amy E. Reichert first through The Coincidence of Coconut Cake which was absolutely delightful, so of course when I saw that she had another book getting released in July I jumped at the chance to review it.

Luck, Love & Lemon Pie is a bittersweet book, an insightful journey of rediscovering yourself and the person you love and learning to fall in love with them all over again. It's about middle-age crisis, drowning in a routine and disconnecting from your kids.

MJ made me smile, she was so real and normal and so very flawed. She started with a scheme to join her husband in a game of poker as he got addicted to it and forgot about their anniversary, but instead she got addicted to the game herself. What would you do when you realize that you are better at it than your partner? Would you keep up or step back in order to not to hurt their feelings? MJ's decisions turned into an emotional minefield, and my heart went to her.

She was having fun, getting confident and happy, but at the same time she kept going back in time, digging into her memories of happiest times with Chris, and when a certain high profile charming poker player started boldly flirting with her and making advances, that's why the clarity of her decision hit her.

Chris, her husband, wasn't an ordinary man as well. I loved how Miss Reichert did not do clear cut characters, and in many ways this book went from disillusioned and bitter atmosphere to a wild romance and beautiful declarations of love.

It's worth reading, peeps. it makes you think and appreciated what you have. Recommended.

No, no, no. There are so many things wrong with this story. Honestly if it weren't for the writing, which I think was great, I would have rated this even lower. I was not a huge fan of MJ and her lack of communication with her husband, but I understood her. I have zero love for Chris. Why was he constantly sneaking out on his family to meet with some other woman?!? I don't care if she needed someone to talk to, he was leaving his family...on holidays, no less, to go meet with her and then he lied about it?!? When MJ forgot him at dinner for a poker game he wouldn't talk to her. When he did it, on their anniversary, he barely even apologized. MJ made some pretty awful decisions and was far from perfect but why did Chris never have to own up to his shit. I just can't. He's awful and this whole plot makes my stomach hurt because I can't help but think that he isn't as innocent as he claims. I won't even get into the snarky way that Tammie talked to MJ, but somehow MJ was the bitter one. Ugh.

I'm probably a glutton for punishment because I NEED to follow through on reading the next book. Hopefully I'll like this one as much as I did The Coincidence of Coconut Cake. I think the author tells a great story but this book just pissed me off too much!

This is the second book of Reichert's I've read, and I loved it even more than the first. MJ is a vibrant character, with real problems, who makes real mistakes. She and Chris are delightfully flawed, but in a way that makes me want to root for them. The tertiary characters are also multi-faceted, and most of them serve some greater purpose. I actually delayed reading for a couple of weeks because I was worried I wouldn't love this book as much as I thought I would, but my fears were misplaced. I finished the entire thing in an afternoon.

I admit, I don't understand the author's penchant for fruit-based baked goods when there's chocolate in this world, but if that's my only complaint, the book is well worth your time.

This was a good marriage in trouble/second chance kind of women's fiction story about two spouses who have drifted apart and try to rekindle their relationship through poker. The only problem is the wife finds a deep love of the game and gets wrapped up in playing the circuit where she meets a mysterious and sexy Irish player.

Good on audio narrated by Susan Erikson, this was relatable and recommended for fans of books like After I do by TJR, Do I know you? by Emily Wibberley & Austin Siegemund-Broka or Last couple standing by Matthew Norman. (Bonus lemon pie recipe included at the end too and fun references to the author's other book, The coincidence of coconut cake).

Delicious weekend read that you will want to finish in one sitting! Enjoyed the twist on who the baker of the lemon pie is! As you read, you feel as if you are along side MJ and Chris in the hiccups of their marriage. Very smooth and enjoyable read, even I was able to understand the poker madness!

When MJ's marriage begins to fail, she turns to her new poker hobby for solace. But will her being away from her family so much make things better or worse?

I absolutely loved The Optimist's Guide to Letting Go (4 stars) by this author, but unfortunately, none of her other books have resonated with me. I found this one much more sour than sweet. And there was way too much about poker. At the end, the author tried to relate marriage to a game of poker, but I just wasn't feeling it. I wish I would have known when to fold 'em and abandoned this book hahaha.

I went into this expecting lighthearted chick lit, and while this was chick lit, it was a little more serious and less feel-good than I was expecting. The central plot or issue at hand, a lengthy marriage gone stale, is entirely realistic and I applaud the author for tackling the subject. However, I didn’t feel any connection to the characters, especially not MJ and Chris. I felt more of a connection to Doyle and MJ’s kids than to the main characters. I felt that MJ became too quickly enamored with poker; she played it once and was suddenly an expert and couldn’t get enough of it to the point where she neglected her family. I did enjoy the poker sections of the book nonetheless and seeing how MJ read her opponents, but this book didn’t live up to my expectations, but perhaps that is my fault. Still a solid 3 stars and a good read for poker fans and Reichert fans. I enjoyed The Simplicity of Cider much more and am excited to read The Coincidence of Coconut Cake.

Luck, Love & Lemon Pie was one of my reading goals this year. I am so glad I finally got around to reading it! It was really enjoyable the whole way through, even though I know nothing about poker. (My son recently tried teaching me how to play and I was thoroughly confused!)

After MJ's husband doesn't show up for their anniversary lunch in favor of a poker game, MJ tries to get closer to him by learning how to play poker. However, she is surprisingly good at it and it becomes an addiction of sorts. Soon, she's spending more time at the poker tables than around her kitchen table with her family. And it's affecting her home life. Not to mention the attractive poker champion who has taken interest in her...

I am glad I read this novel now instead of nine years ago because MJ is closer to my age vs when I was forty. (And it also allowed me to find the perfect actress to play her in a movie as I wouldn.'t have had her in mind back then. See below.) MJ was a sympathetic character whom I enjoyed getting to know. I also enjoyed the armchair adventure in Las Vegas, as it has been many years since I was last there.

I had a few concerns but they were more about stuff happening with the characters for the most part. I felt Chris was being unreasonable given everything started because he didn't show up for their anniversary lunch. And I was surprised that MJ wasn't alerted more about Kate's situation. The only thing that would have been nice were if the poker terms were explained better, perhaps even in a glossary or footnote. I had a hard time visualizing what was going on. However, that didn't take away from my enjoyment and I still give this novel five hearts, spades, clubs, or diamonds. (Why don't cards have stars on them?!?)

This was definitely a worthwhile read! Another great story from Amy E. Reichert! It was different from most rom-coms I've read and I appreciate that. I plan to add another book of Amy's to my reading goals for next year (I think I only have two left at this point and hope she writes more soon!)

(Trigger warnings below.)

Movie casting suggestions:
MJ: Brooke Elliott (her birthday is this weekend, oddly enough)
Ariana: Carla Gallo

I'd like to thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book!
I really enjoyed Luck, Love & Lemon Pie. It was a perfect summer read.
MJ and Chris has been together since the, well, lemon pie. Chris is a wonderful cook and they meet at a college party where MJ tries his lemon pie and falls in love. She even proposes to him right on the spot, however, he politely declines as it's a bit too soon. But the pair begin dating and eventually marry. Now with two kids, Chris working constantly, and MJ holding down the fort things have become a little strained. Chris misses their anniversary dinner which leaves MJ to consume their lemon pie, alone.
Mj then has an idea. Since Chris loves poker so much she think this will be their way to bond and become closer. That's all she wants anyways, lately she has felt as though they're drifting apart. To save her marriage she decides to start playing poker with her husband.
I really like the characters in this novel. It was a fun, entertaining, and quick read. Highly recommended.

Pick it up, take it home & READ IT! I loved it. It has a little bit of everything. I read with tears in my eyes at points, laughed out loud, and wanted to smack the characters when I knew where the story was headed (they didn't) and I did not want that to happen! So beautifully done, I loved all the characters and will be so excited to hear if/when another book is announced. I also should toss in that I was LUCKY enough to get access to an early e-book copy, but look forward to getting my hands on another copy when they are available in print.

From page one, I lost myself in Amy Reichert's latest book, Luck, Love & Lemon Pie. Every woman who's ever been in a long-term relationship will recognize themselves in MJ, a Wisconsin mother trying to win back the magic in her marriage. When she picks up poker as a way to bond with her hubby, she finds herself spending more time at the casino for comfort than at home. It's a story that whisks readers from the Midwestern suburbs to the Vegas Strip (helloooo Doyle!) and I found every excuse to keep reading right until the satisfying end!

I won this book in a giveaway. I enjoyed this story. I have been with my husband for 17 years and could relate to them as a couple. I saw myself in MJ because I was also raised to be independent and never rely on or need a man, and this made it hard for me to open up to my husband at first. I always say that people give up on marriage too quickly and don't put in the work, so I was glad to read a book that showed a couple having problems but sticking together and working to fix them. I also liked the strong, positive female friendships depicted. And the poker was really interesting.

LUCK, LOVE & LEMON PIE is definitely not a sequel to THE COINCIDENCE OF COCONUT CAKE. Nor is it quite as good. With a plot that is predictable and male characters that are as bland as a soggy pie crust, the saving grace for me were the female characters in the story. Wisconsinites will enjoy the occasional mention of familiar sites and towns, but others might not be as impressed. It was just an “okay” read for me…
