About the author

In 2008 Rajiv Parti, M.D. was a world-class practicing cardiac-anesthesiologist – until his life was ripped apart following a diagnoses of prostate cancer. A routine surgery to treat it instead led to numerous complications. Between 2008 and 2010, Dr. Parti endured chronic pain, dependency on pain medications, depression and seven surgeries, the last of which he nearly did not survive. With a fever of 105 degrees, sepsis, severe pelvic infection and in horrific pain, as he was being prepared for surgery, his consciousness separated from his body.

While on the “other side” Dr. Parti journeyed through several realms of consciousness and beyond the “light at the end of the tunnel”. During his near death experience, he learned his life’s purpose: to be a healer of the soul, especially diseases of the soul, of the energy body, addiction, depression, chronic pain and cancer. It was only by experiencing the diseases that had befallen him personally that he could truly have empathy for – and help – others, because he now knew how it felt to be in their shoes.

In order to help people, Dr. Parti learned that he would have to leave anesthesiology and materialism behind. Miraculously, after learning these things, he returned to his body and, baffling his doctors, experienced a complete recovery from pain, sepsis, addiction and depression. Rajiv Parti was living a materialistic dream with the house, car, and beautiful wife to prove it. But, the many things in his life didn't bring him comfort when he developed prostate cancer and a bunch of unfortunate side effects from the surgery to remove it. Addicted to pain pills and disconnected from the people around him, Dr. Parti underwent emergency surgery and experienced something so incredible, that when he woke up, he completely changed his life, developed a new form of holistic health treatment, and gave up many of the possessions that were weighing him down. This is the memoir about that experience and Dr. Parti shares it in the hopes that it will change the reader's life or at least bring comfort to those who are struggling in their current life experience.

Like many of the other memoirs I've read by medical professionals, Dr. Parti talks about the completely scientific view he had of the soul, which is to say, if you couldn't see it and measure it, then it doesn't exist. Also, working on the technological edge of medical breakthroughs in the treatment of various diseases, had given him an invincible feeling. This experience blew that attitude away: "Feeling like a master of the universe is easy in the world of modern medicine. ... Maybe it's a sense of cheating death for others that gives us cardiac surgical teams the vague feeling that we can overcome our own death. Of course that isn't true. ... Reality popped that myth for me." pg 10

In his near death experience, Dr. Parti not only encountered his father, but also a huge crowd of his ancestors. They shared messages of forgiveness and love: "Love is the most important thing there is, my grandfather communicated to me. I am glad to let you know that simple truth while you can still make change in your earthly life." pg 44 But his time on the other side wasn't all light and love, Dr. Parti also had the (fairly rare) experience of seeing hell and the suffering souls within it. This is entirely my opinion, but I think that the detached manner in which Dr. Parti was living his life brought forth a major wake-up call from the spirit world. He saw hell first and then heaven and, in a way, that could be a metaphor for his life experience. I don't believe in "hell" myself other than the nightmare that people can create in their own minds and lives, but, I didn't experience it like Dr. Parti did. This memoir does not focus on the hell portion of the narrative, but, with the rarity of that experience, it could have. That, in itself, says something.

When Dr. Parti "comes back", he knows that he wants to start a new life and a new focus, but he doesn't know how. The information for developing a new type of medicine comes to him slowly during meditation: "What is (the new mode of healing) anyway?" "...It is how nonpharmacological treatments in combination with drugs can heal things like depression and addiction and other diseases. It's about searching one's own soul to fight back against the hollowness that pharmaceuticals alone or alcohol and illegal drugs create or don't really fill." pg 91. He eventually develops meditations and lifestyle changes as well as a manifesto for treatment. To me, the most fascinating part of this memoir was the communication between himself and the spirit world once he was back.

For readers who are unfamiliar with near death experiences, Dr. Parti provides a broad background with some of the major historical figures who went through it. Like Jung: "(Carl) Jung's NDE led to a split with Sigmund Freud, who believed that spiritual experiences were fantasies. Jung, however, considered spirituality an important part of our well-being saying that life has purpose beyond material goals and that our main task, the path we should all be on, is the one that leads to our own connection with the universe." pg 124

Ultimately uplifting and empowering, Dying to Wake Up is another excellent entry into the literature about near death experiences. Recommended for anyone who questions why we are here or what comes after. This is another good NDE account by a doctor.

The author was a distinguished anesthesiologist; but he was materialistic, lacking in empathy, and disinclined to listen to his patients’ accounts of their NDEs.

He becomes afflicted with prostate cancer, has to have several operations and becomes addicted to painkillers. During an operation he leaves his body and sees what the operating team is doing to him, and hears the anesthesiologist’s off-colour joke. At the same time he gets a vision of his mother and sister in their home thousands of miles away.

During the NDE Rajiv nears a place from which he hears “screams and moans of pain and anguish as wildfire moved over burned souls that withered from the intense heat”. He smells the odour of burning flesh and knows he is “on the lip of hell”.

A voice tells him that he has led a materialistic and selfish life, is arrogant and lacking in empathy and he recalls the various patients to whom he has turned a deaf ear. He realizes he has acted like a robot.

Rajiv is married with three children, and is particularly hard on his eldest son, Raghav, whom he has pushed to study medicine. He is cruel to his son, as his own father was cruel to him.

In his NDE at the edge of hell, he is saved by his dead father, now transformed into a man at peace with himself.

He also sees his grandfather, who states, "Love is the most important thing there is”. His father adds “Love is the best way to discipline because gentleness inspires respect”. He also tells him, “Anger is a choice.”

He can see the light at the end of the tunnel, “bright and powerful like a thousand suns”. He is pulled toward it – “the magnetic pull of pure and true love”.

Then he is pulled back into a past life. He is a Prince of the regions where he whips farmers tilling his land. A voice tells him to beg the farmers for forgiveness, which he does. When they touch him, he feels “loving jolts” like electricity; this heals a ligament tear in his wrist which has caused him pain for years.

A rapid review of lives follows, and then comes a life as a grower of poppies from which he produces opium, He is himself an opium addict.

The voice tells him, “You have another life and another chance to cure your addictions.”

Then R. is in the tunnel again and ahead is a bright light; his father leads him towards the light. He is informed that “pure love is the base reality, the underlying fabric of everything in the universe.” “Enlightenment comes when a person realizes that love is everywhere and is the only thing that matters.”

The three move toward the Being of Light. It is a “silver-blue form” neither male nor female. When the Being whispers in his ear, “omniscient, all-powerful love” pervades everything.

The Being of Light tells R. that he will become a healer of the soul, showing others how to heal addiction, depression and chronic pain, these same problems R. had. He would no longer be an anesthesiologist but a practitioner of consciousness-based healing. Instead of putting people to sleep, he will now wake them up.

R. would have to teach himself what consciousness-based healing was; but he already had the knowledge.

He felt that the Being might have been Jesus.

R. was ignored by medical staff to whom he recounted his NDE. They said they would come back and hear his story in more detail, but they never did. He felt he was a “victim of karma” because this was exactly how he had reacted to his patients who had had NDEs. He had said he would return to hear their stories but never did.

The angels told R. that addiction can be the result of an unfulfilled spiritual journey. This makes sense to me. I know that people with a strong Neptune in their horoscope can become alcoholics/drug addicts. If they “find God” or become open to their spirituality, they can renounce their addiction. By using their Neptune in a positive way, they can drop the negative aspects of the planet.

After his NDE, R. works very hard at releasing his materialism – he gives up the fancy cars and the family moves to a smaller, less ostentatious house.

The author describes in detail his various experiences during the NDE. Afterwards, he maintains contact with the Archangels Michael and Raphael through his meditations.

R.’s best friend Naresh is dying of cancer and despite R.’s efforts Naresh apparently cannot be helped. But when the time comes for Naresh to pass over, R. has a “shared-death” experience in the middle of the night where he meets Jesus. The following day he finds out that the experience occurred at the exact time of Naresh’s passing.

This is a comprehensive, inspiring book. It contains an “inner light” meditation by which to connect to the inner spiritual light. I haven’t tried it yet but will do so. The author tells us it is “incredibly effective ín seeing a spiritual light”.

I highly recommend that you read this wonderful book describing R.’s near-death experience and his subsequent complete transformation.

My want is to validate people’s experiences, no matter how far-fetched they seem—eg. Someone with a schizophrenia diagnosis who sees and experiences things I’m not capable of: I want to make space for that—and yet I rolled my eyes approximately 100 times while reading this book. There is so much I found problematic with it!

Someone who has a NDE and then decides he’s cured and has the cure for everyone else (despite doing ZERO work to heal himself)? This is Joseph Smith and the magical glasses type Charlatanism (in my judgement).

Also, I will add that I’ve had a NDE so I went into this expecting to relate and expecting it to be AT LEAST very weird and non-scientific... my judgement is it’s a guy who has a lot of emotional issues and trauma who never dealt with them and then had an NDE and decided he wanted to change but instead of actually changing and healing his trauma and learning how to experience his emotions, he told other people about it and talked about it a lot (that old “talk is cheap” adage).

Clearly this book triggered me. Why do I feel so angry? It’s the sale of “healing” by con-artists that I feel so angry towards because I believe that NDEs are real and that healing trauma and attachment wounds is possible, but I don’t believe this person.

Call me “old fashioned”, but I don’t trust a person who claims that god told him to start a yoga centre...

Let’s logically look at the story: Jesus came to Rajiv to tell him to sell his mansion and to get a slightly smaller mansion, to convince him that it's ok for his son not to do medicine and for him to set up a successful wellness business. I'm afraid there is some delusion going on.

I was looking forward to this book. This is very much the subject I am interested in pondering. However, the longer I read the more I doubted and disliked it. In terms of writing style there is a lot of repitition in the book, padded out. He should have got a better co writer to help. It is very typical of love and light books from the New Age movement in the 80's/90's. He does indeed put out the same positive life enhancing suggestions, which are neatly surmised into simple collections at differant points. He also includes various contemplations to do (meditations). However, for a man who apparently has come to terms with death and Universal Truth he struggles- particularly in the male identity/father/son relationships and with a friends death. The women in his life are in predominantly supportive roles. I found some of his ordinary and extraordinary experiences very trite. I fail to believe that he ate sanwiches and coffee made by his Hindu mother at 4 a.m in New Delhi to help him study each day, in what would have been the mid 1970's (he's roughly my age). I can only think that was put in to create imaginative sympathy. His description of experiences in the conclusion made me increasingly sceptical because of their odd yet strangely stereotyped sugary cosmic blissful nature. He also has some wierd descriptions of Buddhists that he searches out and his understanding of Christianity has superficiial and glib imagery. He seems to still be conflicted by his Hindu ego identity and about other social religions and is trying to find muddled compromise and tolerance, rather than living in the clarity of a holistic spiritual break through. However, I am sure through his difficult cancer journey, his addiction healing, his varying rich materialism and his family/past relationship healing that he probably has had some psychological/spiritual experiences that have given him personal insight which he tries to explain here. But by the end of the book, I am unsure of the whole truth in this book or of the real depth of his experiences. Life experiences which allowed him to move on from one type of expensive doctoring to another type of ...no doubt ...profitable new age healing.

Compelling story of Dr. Parti's near-death experience (NDE) while undergoing a complicated surgical procedure, which then transformed his life. Following his NDE, he resigned as Chief Anesthesiologist at a Bakersfield hospital and devote his life to consciousness and soul healing. There is a common theme with NDEs that people have experienced, and while his story is very good, it's almost too good.

Years ago, while in an Astronomy class, we were assigned to write about our own direct observations, looking up into the night sky. I did so - slept outside under the stars and watched the twinkling of the skies, and then witnessed a tumbling of a shooting star. I noted that I could actually see a slight burning aspect as the meteor entered Earth's atmosphere. When I wrote about my experience, I made it especially fascinating and colorful. Not inaccurate, but as a writer, I made it perhaps a bit more interesting than it actually was. The teacher was blown away, and passed around my essay for the entire class to read and experience. I was both proud and sheepish.

That's what I think may have happened with Dr. Parti's experience. It happened, I'm convinced. However, when there are two angels who spoke to him, who were the angels Michael and Rafael, perhaps they were or perhaps they weren't - there was someone there, but I'm not sure whether they were these very significant angels. Similarly, going to the edge of hell to talk with his father. It may have been a dark place, but hell? I'm not so certain. He admits to being drawn to becoming a Hindu monk early in his life, and is well-read in religious literature.

Overall, it's a very compelling read and I'm very attuned to the very significant NDE the author experienced. There were parts that seemed to have been artfully embellished, perhaps not intentionally, but done so in an effort to fully and colorfully illustrated an incredible emotional and spiritual experience. Much like the example of my astronomy essay. I'll be curious what Dr. Parti does next, living in a society where overt materialism is not good, but we still have bills to pay.

Either way, a fascinating read.

I really want to believe this book.....

As a cancer suffered and therefore being faced with my own mortality i am reaching out to books like this for comfort. I am confident that there is something that occurs once we have left the mortal coil that science currently has no explanation for. Whether this is our journey into the afterlife is the big question. Dr Parti has written a very moving account of his experience and if we take him at his word this near death experience should be reassuring. I loved reading the book however at times it felt a little like a story rather than a factual account. The experiences had whilst meditating, such as voices communicating with Dr Parti and lights appearing in the room, make me uncomfortable because such experiences are not commonly associated with nde's. At times Dr Parti paints himself in a very messianic light in that he has been given the task of healing the sick whilst helping them to find God. I would recommend reading the book however because it does offer a valuable insight into nde's and for me demonstrates why more research is needed into this phenomenon.

Riveting and relatable. Dr. Rajiv Parti’s personal account of his own near death experience (NDE) plus a shared death experience (SDE) with a close friend will humble, delight and inspire you. Breaking down the barriers of culture and religion, Dr. Parti shares his transformational journey to hell, heaven and home again.

This is a true story of healing the past, forgiveness, faith and courage to change. Once a wealthy anesthesiologist with a thriving practice in a prestigious community and driven to succeed in excess, Dr. Parti has transformed his life into one of service to others. The take home message from this book for me was that we aren’t obligated to carry our past with us forever. Cycles of abuse and control can and are meant to broken. Do it now. Don’t wait.

You will recognize veteran co-author Paul Perry’s guiding hand in this book. His vast experience in bringing NDE’s to life in the written word is world renowned.

This book adds even more sustenance to my belief that we can more gain wisdom and learn how to truly live by facing death, either through a NDE or a SDE (shared death experience).
As a physician, especially in having worked in Palliative Care and Oncology for a number of years, I have very much been privileged to be involved in some profound SDEs. It is these experiences that have heightened my spirituality, my gratitude, and my joy in life over the years.
So I can certainly appreciate what Dr. Parti speaks to and the transformation he experienced with his NDE. It is wonderful to have this witnessed to by a person brought up to view things so scientifically and give such credence to the many wonders in life and death we don’t have strict scientific evidence. There are too many wondrous and miraculous occurrences to be merely coincidental!

I really liked this book and thank The Cosmos for guiding me to it. There was one part especially that I felt a strong resonance to, recognizing that the message struck a deeper, personal cord with me. It was about guidance.

I respect and appreciate the beauty in Dr. Parti's revelation of consciousness-based healing. YES to more alternative approaches in medicine, soul healing, and spirituality. The typical western model of give-them-a-pill / surgery has its place, but it's certainly not the only model we must look at. There's WAY MORE to this field than we're conditioned to believe. Thank you to all the healers that bring forth alternative/holistic/real/spirit medicine. Thank you Dr. Parti for your courage in sharing vulnerable truths and bringing spiritual reminders to the world. Your messages are heart-felt and impactful. (Oh, and thank You to Dr. Parti's Guides for revealing the new form of medicine - Archangels Michael & Raphael!) I think the future of medicine is expanding (blessedly) and we're on the brinks of some extraordinary awakenings. An anesthesiologist witnessed his own near-death during an operation performed on him after prostate cancer surgery. He is able to recount a joke the doctors made during the operation, while he was out cold. He saw his own NDE.
There are other explanations for this...not enough anesthetic was administered, the brain shuts down and floods with chemical imbalances when dying causing hallucinations, vision is lost from the periphery giving a sense of tunnel vision, and so on.
But it's hard to deny that what Rajiv Parti saw wasn't real for him. Basically, it's anecdotal, and anecdotal evidence is the lowest type of evidence on the scientific hierarchy, at the top being peer-reviewed research with controls, and a null hypothesis.
Rajiv Parti heals extraordinarily quickly after his NDE. He loses his fear of dying, and has an increased sense of spirituality. He stops being a doctor and becomes a consciousness based healer. His life is transformed.
Transformation is a word all those who have undergone an NDE use to describe their change to a more calm, stress-free, compassionate and loving lifestyle post NDE.
Parti's consciousness based healing recommends dieting, meditation and exercise, and Parti says he has been able to reproduce his NDE through meditation.
Of course, it's also possible to have a similar experience by taking drugs. Ketamine, DMT, Ayahuasca are known to induce similar effects. But those drugs have side effects.
All in all it's a thought provoking book. I think it's only worth 3 stars but I liked the account of his relationship with his down-trodden son, and his long-suffering wife, and his angry father, and his insight, and his lack of insight, into his psychological state.

This book offers invaluable insights to the meaning of life. Mantras and tips are offered, which can help you grow as an individual. As Rajiv mentions, these are simple but powerful. This is one of those books you could carry around and read a little each day and become a better person. I saved many of his quotes, but one overall comment that I am still digesting is that many people who experience NDEs (near death experience) become more spiritual, but not as associated to one religion. Most religions have the underlying theme of love, Jesus; and this book shows that they are more common than you may think. Rajiv shows that through meditation the light is available to everyone. This is powerful. I just went to a lady who speaks with people who have lost loved ones, and one of her repeat sayings was 'Have you asked?' She spoke of the power of asking for what you need, and Rajiv speaks of that too. I became a strong champion of Rajiv when he had to justify his actions for 'downsizing' and quitting his anesthesiology practice in favor of a conscious based healing practice. And kudos to his wife for her support during this wild transition.

I'm only giving this book two stars because I found the author's focus was not what I really was looking for. I was looking for something to ring true at a deep level for me and I didn't find it, so perhaps it's simply because of where I'm at now. I had also just read Anita Moorjani's book "Dying to be Me" and yet I found that resonated deeply with me, and was hoping for the same from Rajiv Parti's book I suppose. But it just didn't affect me in the same way, so I was a bit disappointed. Perhaps it's just a woman's way of relating her experience is different from a man's and so I could relate to Anita's book more quickly. However, Rajiv Parti does relate a unique experience and has some interesting insights into his own life and I'm sure he has a lot to say of importance to the right audience.

Dr. Parti is an anesthesiologist facing a life-threatening infection, and while he was in surgery, he had a near-death experience (NDE). He was taken to the edge of hell, and he saw how he had been living a self-centered life. He was then taken to heaven where he was given the idea of consciousness-based healing.

The remaining 2/3 of the book deals with the aftermath of the experience. Relating the experience to others sometimes went well, but he was met with a great deal of skepticism. He worked to put what he learned in the afterlife into practice. He learned to heal the anger that ruled several generations of his family.

He promotes a belief that the body, mind, and spirit has a natural ability to heal depression and addiction. He has formulated an integrative approach to complete wellness using complementary and alternate medicine.

I don't want to say too much about this book because I encourage anyone interested in NDE/spirituality/afterlife subjects to read it for themselves, but this was a really great book.
A Hindu materialistic, drug addicted chief of anesthesiology has an NDE during an operation, that changed the entire direction of his life afterwards, forever altered. He took the advice from the archangels Michael & Raphael that he received during the NDE and downsized his house, gave up his career of 20+ years, became a better, more enlightened person, and started his own concious-based healing center and now lectures on NDE across the globe.
This book contains great nuggets of wisdom and I can't recommend it enough for anyone interested in this kind of subject. 5 star.

I LOVE NDE books, so I couldn't resist. This one is similar to others, but one thing that bothered me was his understanding that reincarnation exists, which is contrary to Christian teaching, even though he asserts that he has two major angels guiding him as well as Jesus. Supposedly at the end Jesus gives him a new name (Michael) but apparently he doesn't use it. For this to be true, I would have thought he would have listened to the "Light". Seems very much New Age. He is now a very successful Dr. of a different sort and apparently making a lot of money on his newest way of healing.

An interesting read. The author started out as a self-centered, money-hungry, extremely wealthy anesthesiologist who has a horrible relationship with his family, especially his son. He has a NDE. Then, goes on to completely change careers and lead a holistic wellness business, travel the world giving presentations, and meditating for entire work days. All the while, he is still being self-centered, extremely wealthy, and having horrible relationships with his family. I want to believe in what he saw. I find it very interesting, but his personality is just icky.

I was surprised to find that the entire book focused almost entirely on the author’s self-absorption. While learning about his journey had potential, the repetitive tone from start to finish made it disappointing. I expected deeper insight into his near-death experience, but there was very little substance there. Even after such a life-changing event, he seemed slow to grow—everything still revolved around his own perspective. I kept waiting for an uplifting or redemptive moment, but it never came. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this book and was relieved when it ended.

Love this book. A fast and easy read which can transform your life. It came to me at a time in my life when I was struggling to forgive certain family members and it reminded me that we are all one, all connected....those people are only myself in other forms. So I can heal a little bit more because of this book. Also highly recommend for people who suffer from addiction. I only wish it contained more information on his healing practice after the NDE.

I was intrigued to listen to this book and the subject matter.
Parts I just found too hard to believe but there are a lot of what Rajiv experiences, works through and explains that has had me pondering in my own life.
I try to be a happy positive person from the inside out, but this book has allowed me to see that I can do better - in THIS life

Dr. Rajiv Parti was an anesthesiologist, who didn’t believe in near death experiences until he himself had one. He was showed that his mission in life was to help people heal there pain and trauma through consciousness based healing (he didn’t even know what that was until doing further research) and found a path to joy and celebration.

He shares meditations that he used throughout his journey. From his experience, he ended up creating “The Seven Eternal Truths”: 1)Consciousness exists outside of the body. 2)There is life after death. 3)We have past lives and our experiences therein can shape our current realities. 4)We are all connected to each other because we are all made of the one and same energy that manifests as differentiated matter. 5)Divine beings exist to help and guide us. 6)There are different levels of consciousness. 7)There is one, all-pervading, supreme love and intelligence that is the source of the entire universe, and that love is the supreme source of creation.

Dr. Parti spoke about William Griffith Wilson (AKA: Bill Wilson or Bill W.) the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, and the steps & principles of A.A. I never realized how Spiritual the 12 Principals of AA are until he shared about them.

It was a quick & easy read that was very well-written. This was one of my favorite NDE memoirs. He was brutally honest on how he lived his life before his NDE.

Oh how wonderful is this book!!! I couldn’t stop listening, and kept thinking about it and likely will still be thinking about it for some time. His bravely sharing his experience with us, and the insights he gained from his NDE, from ongoing encounters and eventual SDE is profound. This is a story for everyone; for we are all human and will eventually pass from this mortal frame to the next phase of our journey. Wonderful book!

Me ha gustado mucho, pero como ya llevo unos cuantos leídos de la misma temática, no puedo decir que tenga elementos nuevos.
