Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins series meets Law & SVU in the third installment in the Kink, P.I. series featuring modern-day renaissance man, Dominic Law, whose ability to seamlessly navigate the dark streets and the complexities of the fetish world allow him to solve crimes that no one else can, even at the risk of his own life.
After solving two of the more difficult cases of his short P.I. career, Dominic Law feels like the worst might be over. But before he can settle in to take on more routine cases and take a well-deserved rest, a series of intensely brutal homicides occur, making him wonder if someone is truly out to get him.
A series of copycat murders from the previous Roman Numeral case begin to show up in different parts of the city, while another crime scene close to home brings the specter of an old nemesis, hell-bent on revenge. Dominic finds himself in the crosshairs in a race against time to solve the cases before the grim reaper can fulfill a promise in the most explosive installment of the Kink, P.I. series yet.
Can Dominic postpone his reckoning, or will it be too late?
“Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written large in his works.” ~ Virginia Wolfe
Conjurer of worlds. Sorcerer. Man. Myth. Legend. Prototype.
All of these words describe Shakir Rashaan, who has been creating mind-twisting stories and lavish worlds for well over a decade, rolling onto the national literary scene as a contributor to Z-Rated: Chocolate Flava 3 in 2012. His raw, vivid, and uncut writing style captured the attention of the Queen of Erotica herself, Zane. A year later, Shakir’s debut novel with Strebor/Atria/Simon & Schuster, The Awakening, opened to rave reviews, while the follow-up in the Nubian Underworld series, Legacy, garnered even more success, and the third installment, Tempest, helping to make the series one of the most unique and best-selling in the erotic romance genre.
Rashaan would later add to his impressive catalog with the debut of the Kink, P.I. Series in 2015, starting with Obsession and following up with Deception and Reckoning. Drawing comparisons to Walter Mosely’s Easy Rawlins series, Kink, P.I. has developed into yet another best-selling series, carving its place as a “throwback to the days of classic mystery books” in the mystery genre.
Further adding to his impressive portfolio, Rashaan was a regular blogger for USA Today’s Happy Ever After blog, where readers could find him at his “Manly Musings” personal blog, reviewing books, television shows, and movies from a man’s perspective. He wrote recaps for various shows for the STARZ Network, including The Girlfriend Experience, POWER, and Survivor’s Remorse, before the blog was retired in late 2018.
Shakir has gone on in recent years to pen a series of bestselling novels, including In Service to the Senator, a sexy political thriller surrounding an up-and-coming vice presidential candidate, The Devil’s All-American, a unique paranormal romance featuring a rising college basketball star, Unthinkable, a not-so-conventional romance set in the entertainment industry, Love, Lust & Beautiful Liars, a romantic suspense novel about an international weapons dealer who was looking to retire and enjoy his HEA, and most recently in 2021, Queen of Cambridge, part of the Queens of the Castle anthology series.
Shakir has switched gears, jumping into the young adult world, developing the Neverwraith series, a YA paranormal fantasy for Entangled Teen/Macmillan, and the South Hampton series, in addition to several other YA and New Adult projects to expand his NEBU universe. Neverwraith is his most ambitious project to date, about a teenage descendant of an ancient metahuman bloodline who searches for the truth about the death of his parents and their connection to a centuries-old blood feud over sacred texts contained inside of his native Kindara, an island nation located near the West African coast ... all while navigating high school
Shakir currently resides in suburban Atlanta with his wife, soon-to-be college graduate daughter, and a Jack-Chi named Teddy.
Are You F@%*ing Kidding Me!!! Here we go with this shyt again! You would think I've learned but I succumb to the torture every time. Shakir Rashaan, I love to hate you so much right now! Two series, Six books and you still control my emotions through every page. We all need to know a Dominic Law. This man will let nothing stop him until he gets the job done and the case is solved. If it seems to easy, then you've missed a critical detail. Sometimes you have to look beyond the big picture and take the puzzle apart for it all to make sense. What you think comes to light from the dark isn't always what's in the shadows. Reading chapter for chapter, page for page was like running laps at the Kentucky Derby trying to catch the carrot being dangled in front of you. Just when you think you finally got and sit back to savor the win, he puts a red cape in front of you and you're off like you are running with the bulls. I want more and I need more... So obviously I'm saying it loud and clear, keep on writing!
What readers expect from a Zane presents novel--erotic scenes with no boundaries, stories from a multi-cultural point of view, and a unique story line--is well done by Shakir Rashaan. It is obvious in the storytelling that he has an expanse of knowledge about the BDSM community, rules and what needs to happen when those rules are not followed. The suspense part of the novel is woven within the thread of this knowledge as the lead male character and his counterparts try to unravel multiple issues that surface in the search for one killer. Rashaan does not disappoint at giving us a glimpse into that life, and also is adept at placing the red herrings along the way so that reader can, if they've followed along, figure out who;s behind the murders. -- Naleighna Kai, national bestselling author of Open Door Marriage and Was it Good For You Too?
“The last thing he suspected was the scene of his dreams turning into a nightmare of epic proportions.”
I don’t know how to start this review except by saying, the first chapter had me completely sold on this book. “Why was it about to be a nightmare for him? Who is doing this to him?” I love when a book hooks me in and has me asking questions.
Someone has it out for Dom and they have weaved an intricate plan to bring him down. Rashaan gives us a glimpse into the BDSM world as the reader knows the relationship between the colorful cast of characters based on the use of lower and upper case letters. This particular book doesn’t go knee deep into the sexual aspect of the BDSM world so don’t allow that to deter you from picking this one up.
“We were so focused on one person that the others quietly worked behind the scenes in other capacities, trying their best to put an innocent man behind bars.”
The Reckoning is a clever, fast-paced read. It is like a puzzle that makes you think one piece fits here and then you’re like, “Crap, I was wrong,” and then you have to try something else. If you enjoy a good mystery that has a sexual element to it, then I recommend a visit to your favorite retailer or online site and buy a copy of The Reckoning.
Side note, this is the third book in a series but you do not need to read the previous books to understand this one!
Author Shakir Rashaan's Reckoning is the 3rd in The Kink, P.I. series, but it can be read as a standalone. One thing that I love about this author is that he combines suspense, mystery, drama, and hot erotica in his books, all at the same time. it's like hitting the book lottery. The sex is amazing without being over the top, and the suspense has that “sitting on the edge of your seat” feel. My intention was to read a few chapters, and then rest, but I eye-gobbled it in one setting; it was that good. I absolutely love it, and can’t wait for the next book. I would definitely recommend that you read the book, and even though it can be read as a standalone, I'd suggest you get the 1st two books in the series.
