Midnight in Legend, TN
Midnight Shelby is starting over. A real estate agent's virtual tour of a large two-story brick building on the main street of the small town of Legend, Tennessee caught her eye and she's leaving her smarmy ex-husband, the big city, and corporate life behind. The town is struggling but Midnight has ideas that will give it new life as well.
Martin McClain was born and raised in the Legend area. His family has lived there for generations, and he feels a duty to preserve the past. The website his son Daniel created has been good for business, but although Martin is a real estate agent by trade, he’s wary of newcomers’ motivations.
Especially Midnight Shelby, who seems bent on changing everything...even him.

If we haven’t met before, here’s the skinny on me:
USA Today Bestselling Author Magdalena Scott writes sweet romance and romantic women’s fiction. A lifelong resident of Small Town America, she invites readers into her world to find out what’s hidden just below the surface of those tiny dots barely visible on the map.
Romance, mystery, and the journey to be one’s best self are all part of a day in her neighborhood. Readers have commented that they’d like to move to the imaginary towns Magdalena writes about, which she takes as high praise indeed.
Magdalena is a practicing minimalist, having downsized from a 3,000 square foot house to a studio apartment, where her Giant Closet continues to resist taming. When not writing at home or spending time with family and friends, she loves to travel–carry-on baggage only–and is always pleasantly surprised at the kindness of strangers.
I enjoyed this short novella. It was well written, has a wonderful storyline and I enjoyed the characters. I'm putting my long tbr list aside and reading Christmas Collision, Book 2, in this sweet and continuing romance. So many things to discover in this pretty little town of Legend. JudyE
I got the small town and all the trappings of said small town, I liked the hero, but I could not stand the heroine. Midnight Shelby was a spoiled, entitled brat of heroine; she acted more like 18 than a 42 year old divorcee. She jumps to so many conclusions, opinions nobody asked for, and mood changes at the blink of an eye....and yet all her problems are of someone else's fault. The voodoo doll stuff just showed her to be a bitter pill to boot and wasn't funny in the least.
Martin was a decent hero, but really bland. I understood his motivations for wanting to bring in the right kind of economic resurgence into his small town. His family is a bit cloying, but the friends within the community seemed normal. I don't honestly see why Martin would want a relationship with Midnight and there wasn't any chemistry to warrant the relationship. I won't be reading anymore from this series or the author.
I received this book Free , thank you ! I loved the story line. It I set in a small town. The cast of characters play well together. A successful women, dumped by her husband end in divorce. Sparks flare between them but neither are ready to trust again. The town of Midnight is dying, can they save it and turns? If you like clean romance book with lots of heart, you will enjoy this book. Alice
Take one heart-weary young career woman who needs to get away from her past, add one old-fashioned, single dad, toss in his thirteen year old computer whiz son, and mix well in a small town filled with promise. You have the makings of a Christmas romance. This book is such a sweet read, from the set-in-his-ways real estate agent who can not see progress as anything except a destructive move for his hometown to the smart executive New Yorker who puts the plan in action to save it. Of course they rub each other the wrong way every time they come in contact! Still, when they begin to listen to each other instead of misunderstanding everything, things happen. This is definitely a good read. Ms Scott is a talented author with a plot that could be predicted, but is fun to read anyhow. Thanks for a good read!
Midnight getting out of a marriage after 20 years, would’t take the advances of a co worker and ended up being fired. With a new jag, and a voodoo doll, in the front seat, she comes to her property in Legend. A town with buildings and people’s heritage that go back for generations. Arts and crafts was what she wanted to sell here, the town was full of artists, but none willing to sign yet.Christmas Ball with the realtor, would people then recognize her as a valued member of this tiny, close knit community. The author was new for me, and I enjoyed it, it was fresh, dealing with second chances, big dreams, and a big desire to help the community. The plot flowed, and the descriptions were good. Enjoyable and easy to read, and hope to see more by her.
I live in a small town in East Tennessee....Sweetwater. This book sounds just like our downtown. I felt like Magdalena Scott used a part of our history.
Great read.
Fav quotes: 1. Living in Mayberry would require some adjustments. 2. This one is so true of East Tennessee.... MIDNIGHT REALIZED SOMETIME during the first day of interviews that Legend didn’t run on the same time she did. This was The South, and life moved more slowly. Much…More…Slowly. People arrived when they arrived, didn’t mind waiting, and were glad to sit and talk a while.
I really enjoyed this book about Midnight and Martin. Midnight comes to Legend, Tennessee, after her marriage of twenty years ends in divorce. Martin loves his small town and doesn’t want outsiders moving in. When he first sees Midnight, his attraction is instant. Can these two have a happily ever after or will her wanting to grow Legend be a dealbreaker? Grab your copy and fall in love with the small town of Legend, Tennessee.
This is a beautiful story of new beginnings that just happen to take place at Christmastime. A story of new beginnings for people and a town. Put a small town that needed help, a woman with a vision and, of course a man who didn't know he needed a happier life. I liked it so much that I've already purchased the next book to read tomorrow. Thank you Ms Scott! I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
Really good story. I really enjoyed Midnight's 'go all out' attitude and her way of enticing the locals to see and accept her vision of Ledgen. Martin came around a lot quicker than I thought he would and was more accepting of her relationship with Daniel than I thought was possible.
Midnight in Legend is small town romance at its finest. Martin and Midnight (I love that name!) set off sparks almost from their first meeting. Nice sweet story. Looking forward to reading more in this series.
Heartwarming story about a woman starting over in a small town.
Midnight has left New York in her rearview mirror, and set her sights on making a home in the tiny town of Legend. She never expects to find a love interest when she isn't even looking.
She’s an elegant woman from NY buying and moving to a small town in Tennesse. It’s an adjustment for all, her and the town. Eventually she comes to love them, they love her and she finds a man to love.
Pacing seemed a little off but it was, overall, a pretty decent little romance. I would be interested in the book being expanded into a full-length novel to see if the pacing can be improved.
Good clean romance and delightful characters who complement each other. Certainly worth your time to read. Good description of the joys of small town living.
Midnight leaves NYC behind after a bitter divorce and losing her job, and buys a building, sight unseen, in Legend, TN. The town is dying, and she wants to help turn things around. But her realtor doesn't trust outsiders and thinks the town is fine by itself. They clash, a lot, but are also attracted to each other. There wasn't a lot of build-up,; it seemed they just suddenly together, but I still liked the story and am looking forward to reading more about Legend.
Running away from ex-husband who also caused you to lose your job, come across a website designed by a 13 year old in the town of Legend Tennessee. You buy a building sight unseen to begin your new life. Boy is it different from NYC!
You know what they say…Success is the best revenge! Midnight Shelby is about to prove that theory.
Your husband decides he isn’t happy and wants out…but doesn’t say it to your face; he leaves a note at the breakfast table! What do you do? If you are Midnight Shelby, you buy an old building in another town, restore it and start all over again.
When Midnight arrives in Legend, she is not quite sure what to expect and most certainly didn’t expect the sexy realtor, Martin McClain who sold her the building through email. But it is Martin's son Daniel that speaks to Midnight’s heart. It is her energy and drive that inspires the town and intrigues Martin. He is amazed and drawn by her infectious energy and determination even in the face of all the resistance that makes Martin sit up and takes real notice. Martin and Midnight both have their individual baggage and put the past behind them so they can both start over…with each other.
Midnight in Legend is part two of a four part series, The Ladies of Legend, by four different and very talented writers. This particular part is an upbeat story of a woman rebuilding her life after the ultimate insult.
Midnight is a strong, resilient woman who can see the forest from the trees and welcomes the changes in her life rather than run and hide from them. She truly is a role model to the young woman surrounding her. The story is quick and not big into details or background but talks to the heart. This is an interesting short story that screams to belong to a bigger picture. Enjoy it for the treat that it is and move visit the other ladies of Legend for an even bigger treat.
Review by EmmaRae Book provided by publisher for review
This was a terrific outline for a book, but I don't think it was complete as short as it was. Short romances are great, but this wasn't a short romance. It just seemed to be a plot device for the series, or an exposition. There was no developing romance in it that I could see.
You saw Midnight's growth as a character and felt her love of the town… Midnight was beautifully written. The book seemed to focus on her campaign to Market Legend, but not the romance. I'd read a great scene, and then wonder what happened to lead to it or what followed it, leaving the scene sadly incomplete.
It didn't bring in the other characters, and all but Betsy and Midnight seemed paper thin. I didn't see Martin's character development at all and his behavior just didn't make sense. The few scenes with them getting to know each other were great, but there was just too much exposition without development or action. I also didn't understand why Christmas and the New Year passed by without a mention. Time flew, but nothing happened.
Sorry to say, this is not one I'd recommend from Magdalena Scott. Read it if you're a fan of the series, but otherwise I just don't see the point.
A novella/ short story of just 100 pages. I enjoyed reading this well written, sweet and cosy romance set in small town America.
An outsider from New York comes to this small town determined to rebuild her life after a nasty divorce. She is rather exotic in style and taste for the inhabitants of this small town and has some drastic ways of thinking.
The town seems to be made up of one very prominent family some of which are rather set in their ways and don’t want change but this lively lady called Midnight changes everything.
Midnight moves to Legend to start fresh. She wanted to find a place where she could make true friends and start a business that would help the community.
Martin is the real estate agent who sells Midnight the building and is reluctant to let her possibly bring more strangers into his beloved home town, even if it would mean saving the town.
This was just okay for me. There was something kind of rushed about it, which I kind of get because it was a shorter story, but it felt awkward.
A new start for midnight and the small town of Legend.
This is a book that enjoyed from first page to last. It gives you the feeling of community and friendship. Coming from a large city Midnight really had no Clue how smaller towns work. Martin was all about Keeping at status quo. Not liking any change of Where he grew up and still lived. All in all a very cozy Good read.
New energy in the form of Midnight Shelby brought new hope to the the small town of Legend where many people were unwilling to do things differently. Especially Martin McClain, hurt by his first wife, was determined to defy change; A heartwarming story of courage and perseverance and a willingness to take risks. An enjoyable read.
New chances! Small beginning with big hopes! Start life over is daunting, Doing so in a small dying town may not be the best idea Well written with a good story line
