Madison Knight #6

Deadly Impulse

Rate this book
Looks aren’t the only things that can be deceiving...

When a sixty-eight-year-old woman is found dead outside the hospital in a wheelchair with an anti-abortion sign strapped to its back, Detective Madison Knight expects it to be an open-and-shut case. On the surface, there are no signs of foul play, but the deeper she digs, the more convoluted the homicide becomes. And when two more bodies appear, including those of a girl just barely old enough to drink and a homeless man, the direct links between the three murders are anything but simple.

Without a consistent MO, Madison doesn’t buy that a serial killer is on the loose, despite the conviction with which her ex-fiancé and fellow detective try to convince their superior. But Madison already has enough to juggle without having to defend her reputation. Debilitating flashbacks of being held hostage by the Russian Mafia mere months before haunt her on an almost daily basis, and the promises she made to herself while in captivity are becoming more and more difficult to keep. Learning to trust is hard enough without constant reminders of what destruction--fatal or otherwise--trusting the wrong person can cause.

Now, as both personal and professional friction within the department mounts, she and her partner, Terry, must figure out what motivation could span generations to cause someone to murder these people. But catching this killer is like grasping at straws, and grabbing the wrong one could mean losing not only her pride but also her boyfriend, her credibility, and her faith in humanity...

Once again, Carolyn Arnold has penned a strong and impactful tale in the sixth book in the Detective Madison Knight mystery series, Deadly Impulse . Madison is suffering from flashbacks from her abduction by Russian criminals, but when a suspicious death of a sixty-eight-year-old woman becomes a murder case, her compulsion to find justice kicks in. Teamed up with her partner of six months, Detective Terry Grant, they must sift through the evidence and lies to find what has really happened and why.

Madison is strong-willed, impatient, and independent, but her abduction and flashbacks are affecting her. Despite this, she is tenacious, loves challenges, and pressures herself to have all the answers. Madison is not as likeable as many protagonists, but her faults make her feel more realistic than the perfect strong female lead. Driven to solve crimes and seek justice, Madison often goes on instinct, which doesn’t always mean she keeps an open mind. Terry is a good balance for her and she respects him. He is fair and balanced, keeps her grounded, and challenges her when it’s needed. Readers get some insight into Madison’s boyfriend, Troy Matthews, the head of the Special Weapons and Tactics department of the Stiles, Pennsylvania police department.

The book is a good mix of police investigation and the personal lives of Madison, Troy, and Terry. Readers are quickly pulled into the story line with a writing style that grabs and holds one’s attention. The plot is multi-layered and has twists and turns to keep a reader guessing. Fluid writing, great characterization, and a mystery to be solved kept me engaged. My one quibble is that I would like a little more world-building to feel like I was in Pennsylvania. Themes include, murder, friendship, trust, relationships, secrets, and much more.

Overall, this was a story that captivated me from the first page to its last. The author did a great job of weaving the threads together. I look forward to seeing what is next for Madison, Troy, and Terry. Readers of mysteries and police procedurals will likely enjoy this series. By reading the series in order, the character growth and the relationships that develop over time are more obvious. However, this novel can be read as a stand-alone.

I purchased a copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date was October 29, 2015.

Deadly impulse by Carolyn Arnold
This is book 6 in this series but can be read as a standalone as this was the first book in the series I have read and didn’t feel like I had missed out on some major events like you can in some books.
So this is a crime/murder investigation book and has a feel of CSI to it. It is fantastically written with amazing attention to detail and clearly the author has a great deal of passion for this subject. It has mind boggling twists and turns which leaves you wanting to get to the end but not wanting it to finish. It is a realistic and thoroughly enjoyable book which isn’t dragged out to much but it isn’t too short either.
The main character in the book is detective Madison Knight who is very capable in more ways than one. She is career orientated and won’t let anything or anyone stand in the way of her current case She clearly has had a traumatic history with being kidnapped herself and the memories never seem to leave her alone. When she comes across the body of an elderly lady with no ID she starts to remember her own family. Her cases always get her full attention and she never fails to get to the bottom of what has happened. She really is a force to be reckoned with but will she give in and finally think about her personal life as well as her career?
For me this is a full on 5 star read. It is everything you would expect out of a book like this.

Detective Madison Knight, her partner Terry Grant and her team respond to the report of a dead body that was found by a fence near the busy shopping district of Styles. She was an elderly woman who was found in her wheelchair. He detectives follow the clues, interview some abortion protestors and learn that her first name was Faye.

Following more clues, they learn that her full name was Faye Duncan. Then more bodies begin to turn up. They continue to investigate and come up with a suspect. But did he do it? Reluctantly, they have to let him go for lack of evidence.

Their cases turn out to have more than one murderer. The motive for Faye’s killing was a lifetime of hate and jealously.

I didn’t particularly care for Detective Madison Knight. She was too prickly and too obsessed with her run-in with the Russians. I understand PTSD, but good grief does all that baggage really belong in this book? A mention or two would have been sufficient.

This novel was well written and plotted, an aside from the problems I had with Madison, not too bad a read.

Deadly Impulse: Be prepared for sleepless nights or non-productive days

So glad I was a bit behind on my to read list, because I had just finished Carolyn Arnold's Just Cause, when Deadly Impulse hit my bookshelf. If you have not had the chance to experience the Detective Madison Knight crime series, these two books could be read together. But you will want to go back to read the rest of the series to enjoy the masterful way Carolyn Arnold weaves her plot lines with ticklers for future cases, and the continued development of Madison as a person.

Deadly Impulse brings Madison Knight three seemingly related murders to solve, and as usual she jumps into the investigation head first. Even though one case is not assigned to her, Madison does not stand on protocol--a habitual irritant to her boss--and nothing keeps her from following all leads.

Grappling with PTSD from a near-death experience, Madison constantly struggles to keep the vows she'd made to herself if she survived, as well as to honor her partner's request that she never again put herself in harm's way without backup. Can Madison control the headstrong impulsivity that has threatened her life and career over and over again? Especially with three victims calling to her for justice.

And then there's that hunky new guy who clearly wants more than casual dates. Can Madison break the cycle of destructive past relationships to take this chance at happiness?

The pace is fast, with enough plot twists to make the book hard to put down. Carolyn Arnold leaves just enough plot lines open-ended to make you anticipate reading the next book.

This is the perfect book to cuddle up with a mug of hot chocolate or a glass of wine on a cold winter day--or if you're lucky enough, to read on a sunny warm beach!

Carolyn Arnold is on my list of favorite writers--you won't go wrong reading any of the four series she's currently offering.

: I love mystery novels and Deadly Impulse had me from the very start. I fell for this book like a fish takes to water it felt natural and like this book had been waiting for me. Madison is an amazing character she follows her gut instinct and does just accept the easy answer especially when she is sure there is more to the story than can be seen. I really was caught up in Madison's character her flashbacks of being kidnapped made me gasp and feel the absolute fear present at the time. I became a cheerleader for Madison and was right with her as she set out to prove that there was more to these murders than a serial killer they were somehow connected. I can without a doubt tell you that I did not see the ending coming. I love to try and figure out mysteries before the end but this one even got me. This was by far one of my favorite mystery/romance novels I have read in quite awhile. Carolyn Arnold is one author that makes me want to read more from her.

I found the main character in this mystery to be remarkably unappealing. After a love affair gone bad she avoids commitment and spends way too much time feeling sorry for herself and wallowing. Although she does have a good man in her life in this book she spends most of her energy making up reasons why it won't work out and treating him badly. All of the anger and hurt that this causes her goes into her job as a police detective where she accuses virtually everyone related to the victims, making up motives as she goes along and then being angry when the people accused have the gall to be innocent! We are told that she is a great detective, a woman worth pursuing romantically and so forth but, in my opinion the author does nothing to demonstrate this. I held out to the end to find out "who done it" but it was basically a waste of time. After completing this book I deleted other books from the same author that I got as free downloads.

This is the sixth in the Dec Madison Knight series. It is the third one that I have read and certainly the best. It's a crime/police procedural. It could be read as a stand alone. The main character, Maddie Knight, is getting well fleshed out and is a good character.
The actual story is about the murder of an elderly woman, initially unknown, found in a wheelchair near a hospital. As Dec Knight investigates, with her partner Terry, further murders happen. They seem to be linked but only two of the cases are assigned to Maddie and Terry.
Are the murders linked? Is it the same killer? There may yet be a twist to the story before it is resolved but that is proving difficult as they seem to be chasing leads that go nowhere.
It's a good read.

As police procedurals go, it followed the rules. As police/detectives go, never would be tolerated. Madison would not only not have any friends in the department, she would be ostracized and her career would be over before it got off the ground. That aside, I found the mystery aspect predictable and the editing sub-standard. It was only through luck that the detectives solved the case and then wrapped it all up in a matter of minutes because everyone suddenly felt like confessing and getting the guilt off their chests. Just couldn't buy it. Too convenient of an ending, it felt like the author was copping out.

DEADLY IMPULSE by Carolyn Arnold "Madison Knight" book 6 What is the connection with an elderly woman in a wheelchair, dead along the side of the road. Hanging around her neck, "put an end to abortion" . The wheelchair number is that of a missing wheelchair. Madison thought, hoped it would be an easy case, who and why of the case, to solve. They recognized the picture, she was a protestor, but the name, no one knew. A good plot, as you read, and try to figure out why an elder woman met her death this way.

I previously read a book in this series and didn't care for it. I thought I'd give it another shot. Bad decision. I did enjoy the story, although the ending was a little rushed and contrived. My main problem is the main character, Madison Knight. I can't stand her. She's so unlikable. I get it... she's a feminist. She's been hurt in love. Her job is her life. Blah blah blah. She's also a total jerk, even to her friends. If Madison Knight were a real person, she would've been fired a long time ago. I'm calling it quits on this series.

Deadly Impulse - a review by Rosemary Kenny

This fast paced thriller by Carolyn Arnold will excite lovers of feisty Detective Madison Knight and police procedural murder-mysteries, with its wide-ranging emotions and human frailties and strengths.

Both Madison and the other main protagonist, her partner Detective Terry Grant have issues to deal with - both inside and outside the Department they devote their working lives to with such dedication.
Madison is recovering from PTSD as a hostage for the Russian Mafia only a few weeks before this case began. Terry's wife is imminently due to give birth, which may cause new problems he will have to cope with at work on a daily basis.
The body of Faye Duncan (68), discovered with an anti-abortion notice pinned to her purloined wheelchair is the first of three disparate corpses to be discovered by the Stiles police force.
Can Madison and the team discover the real link before the killer strikes again? What is that link and how does it span the generations between the victims? When will Madison be able to start recovering from her ordeal - can her therapist help her make a breakthrough with her trust issues before she loses Troy for good?
You'll have to commit to reading this excellent addition to the Detective Madison Knight series - a hands-up winner for Carolyn Arnold - I loved it!

It has been a while since I read a Suspenseful Mystery novel, and when I say a while I mean years. I have always been a huge fan of Patricia Cornwell. So when I was asked to review Deadly Impulse by Carolyn Arnold I was happy to take a break from the usual love story that I've been reviewing. Don't get me wrong I love my romance novels but a good mystery is always great.

Deadly Impulse is book number 6 in the Detective Madison Knight Series. If this book is any indication of the rest of the series I am definitely in!! Madison Knight is a tough, sassy, and intelligent Detective. She is a straight shooter and takes no crap. When she is called out to the scene of a elderly woman found dead in a wheelchair, that has a Pro Life sign, strapped to it. No ID is to be found.
Follow Knight and her partner as they struggle to put little bitty clues together when the first murder seems to flow into two more murders. When two of the victims are found to be related to each other, the suspect pool has now been blown wide open.
Carolyn Arnold has timing, flow, and character development down pat. I literally finished this book in about an hour and a half. Thank heavens for school or I would have had to put it down. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book.

Thanks to the author and Amazon for making this e-book available. It was a quick read and the action was continuous. An older woman is found dead, sitting in a wheelchair in a location in front of a hospital where she has been in the habit of joining an abortion protest group. It takes a while for detective Madison Knight and her partner Terry to get a handle on who she is and how she was placed here without there being any witnesses.

As their investigation goes on there are two more murders, one who turns out to be the granddaughter of the first dead person and another completely unconnected who is a homeless person. The question is - are they linked in some way?

I enjoyed reading about Madison's thinking as she doggedly follows through to eventually solve all three deaths, even though the third was technically another detective's case.

This is a book that I think Gillian would very much enjoy!

Madison just can't give in to her emotions as they seem to let her down to often. The new case is a strange one as a old lady has been found in a wheelchair and no one has any ideas as to who would want to kill her. But once someone else is killed in the family, they dig into some dark things that disturb them. But why kill both of them? Madison knows that she has to make peace with her partner Terry as he is under a lot of pressure from home and she needs to trust her new boyfriend more and if she doesn't want to work on it he will walk away from her.
Will they be able to find the killer before even more people die? A great read full of action, new beginnings and just accepting that you can't change everything.

Life and families are never quite what they seam

Body found in a wheel chair outside the very hospital she protests outside of each day, young woman killed and is dressed in a vagrants clothes two deaths (three really but one is not Madison's case) is it one or two murderers. On top of that Terry's wife is about to give birth and Madison's love life is walking a thin line. Oh my word there is so much going on when you open the box no book out comes strippers vagrants families great aunts sisters and men and Madison is the one who has to sort it all out . A great read plenty going on and twists red herrings are all there. Oh and then there's Troy. I recommend this book for its mystery it's fun and the twists and turns

After I finish reading a book I like to read what other readers thought. Some of the reviews on this book surprised me. This is the third book that I've read in this series. It worked well as a stand alone for me since the author only moves ahead a few months between books and she provides reasons for Madison's flashbacks. She has a new boyfriend after ending things with defense attorney Blake. What remains the same is Madison's strong work ethic and desire to get justice for murder victims. In Deadly Impulse she needs to solve three murders that seem to be related. I like the work relationship she has with her partner, Terry Grant, and CSI Supervisor Cynthia Baxter. I find this series entertaining and I look forward to reading about further adventures.

Arnold has written a fine piece of literature for the avid police detective or just plain crime reader. The book was well written for the most part, although it seemed that some of the chapter endings weren't as suspenseful as others. The accuracy (although I wouldn't truly know) is breath-taking, to the point where some clues were useless and certain people were in-your-face red herrings. It was sometimes a bit hard to follow Detective Knight's thinking, especially near the end of the book, and that put a damper on the big reveal, but overall, a solid detective mystery to enjoy.

P.S. The focus on feminism and female empowerment was a really nice element to the story.

Deadly Impulse

What a great read detective Madison Knight, and her partner Terry are on a race to find out who killed three people, two of whom were related in the meantime, her partner Terry and his wife are about to give birth to a baby in the meantime, detective Madison Knight, and another gentleman from the precinct. His name is Tory , and this is Madison‘s new boyfriend. He was helping her towards the end because he did not want her going off on her own. This was such a great read. I enjoy Carolyn Arnold so much now I’m on to book 7 of this series, anyone wants a great series with a kick butt female detective this is your series.🩷📚😊

Lots of mystery and suspense all the way through. Kept me guessing.

Liked the relationship between Madison and her detective partner Terry - different views and both with personal issues to deal with - they complement each other. Madison is trying to decide how she really feels about Troy, Terry has a heavily pregnant wife, both trying to put their personal issues aside and concentrate on unravelling the threads connecting the murders. Added to all that Madison has flashbacks to when she was kidnapped by the Russian mafia.

A good read.

Not very likable main character

I hate to admit that I did not finish this book and I usually always finish even when I don't like it. But this was torturous to read. The main character was so over the top that it came out sounding ridiculous. Her actions and thoughts weren't very relatable or realistic. The writing style came across as amateurish. When she deserted her date because he didn't tell her that his sister was the chief of police, was about the time I decided that I could be reading something worthwhile.

This was an ok book. I didn't live it or hate it. It involves 3 murders and the Detective who tries to solve them. I haven't read a book involving this person in a while, so I don't remember all the drama surrounding her. It is almost as if her drama lends itself to be the most important part of the book, rather than the crime. The last 1/3 of the book, the crime is solved and the ending is not what I expected.

I have liked the series so far, but for some reason this book just grated on me. The main character is annoying in her self-righteousness. She clearly needs anger management classes, and her pursuit of the culprit at the expense of everyone else around her is somehow not endearing in this book. Her disdain for authority is now less being a strong woman and more churlish. I was not sad when I could finally close the book on this one.

I read this book out of sequence so I felt like I was missing something with the frequent references to the previous book . I still enjoy the team of Knight and Grant making sure they comb through every bit of evidence until they find the killer . However this time they have three murders and three different killers all connected together . Good read

This is a great crime procedural story that is filled with the frustration that the officers face while trying to figure out who killed who. I liked how Madison's character grew throughout the story. Although this is the first book I have read in the series I could tell that she has evolved as a person as well as an officer. I will be looking for more in the series.

Decent

It was a decent read but there really seemed to be a lot of unnecessary text. It made it feel like a short story stretched into a novel. Basically, every thought she had seems to be detailed out, which causes the book to drag quite a bit. Then, the ending is fairly anti climactic, and happens quickly. This type of writing didn't appeal to me, but may to others...

Madison did everything she could to make enemies in this story. She was so sure she had control of her life as a single female workaholic Detective. Thank goodness she has to see a Psychologist after her encounter with the Russian Mob. She is a great Detective and showed it. We know the worst nightmare will be coming after her soon. So does she. Bad PTSD.

Started out good. But there were recurring references to past events, presumably in a book I haven't read. A constant nagging that I'm missing a backstory that is important. Ending up stopping.

Another downer in this one is the sex and profanity. Granted it's light; most readers will probably gloss over it and wonder what I'm talking about. But my standards in this area is pretty strict.
