Joseph Delaney

He was the author of Wardstone Chronicles, Starblade Chronicles, Arena 13, Aberrations and a new book came out in April 2020, Brother Wulf. This is a new spooks story featuring Tom and Alice, but introducing a new character, a young monk called Brother Wulf.
He first got the idea for the Spooks series when he moved to the village where he lives now and discovered there was a local boggart - ‘a man like me needs boggarts around’. He made a note in his notebook ‘a story about a man who hunts boggarts’ and years later when he had to come up with an idea at short notice developed this into ‘The Spook’s Apprentice’, the first book in the series.
He continued to draw upon the folklore of Lancashire and has acquired much local knowledge over the years which he tweaks and modifies to create his fictional world. Another source of inspiration has been Lancashire's varied and atmospheric landscape. Many of the locations in the County are based on actual places in Lancashire.
In the early days of his writing career Joseph worked as a teacher at a Sixth Form College: his subjects were English, Film and Media Studies. He used to get up early and write every morning before work. That way he could write a book a year – which promptly got rejected! When the Americans bought the series he decided to give up teaching and write full time.
Prior to teaching he worked as an engineer in his twenties, completing an apprenticeship just like Tom Ward in the spook’s books.
Joseph described his method of writing as a process of discovery. He didn’t plot too far ahead and often didn’t know what is going to happen until he writes it down. In other words he made it up as he went along. He prefed writing dialogue to description, in which he said he is a minimalist and leaves much to the reader’s imagination.
Joseph had three children and nine grandchildren and was a wonderful public speaker available for conference, library and bookshop events.
The Spook's Apprentice, The Spook's Curse and The Spook's Secret have all been shortlisted for the Lancashire children's Book for the Year Award. The Spook's Apprentice is the winner of both the Sefton Book Award and the Hampshire Book Award.

I really enjoyed this book! I know a lot of people were quite disappointed, but i liked it. It was a fast read, although not at all light, because there were lots of savage and bloody scenes. I definitely recommend it if you need something different and quick to read - Arena 13 has got some potential.

Citisem cam jumătate din cartea asta şi mă gândeam cât de mult îmi place ideea şi faptul că totul e dozat, şi că personajele nu fac lucruri (prea) prosteşti şi că ador descrierile şi locurile din oraş, ce sunt pe atât de frumoase şi interesante, pe atât de sângeroase şi parfumate (şi de cele mai multe ori nu miros bine deloc). Doar că lipsea ceva. Şi dacă mă citiţi de ceva timp, atunci ştiţi şi ce mă deranja. Nu puteam să simt personajele şi nu m-ataşasem de ele, ceea ce pentru mine e un aspect important, mai ales dacă vreau să recomand o carte cu tot sufletul şi toţi neuronii. Dar cred că "Arena 13" m-a auzit bombănind şi a întors foaia, căci în a doua jumătate m-a întors pe dos şi numai sentimente, tensiune, suspans şi acţiune mi-a dat. M-a pocnit cu tot ce-a avut şi mai că m-am simţit ca băieţii ăştia când sunt caftiţi şi n-au armura la ei. Dar mi-a plăcut! Şi mai vreau! Hei! Nu mă judeca, sună mai ciudat cu voce tare, bine?!
N-aşteptam nimic când am început "Arena 13", dar ştiam că Delaney scrie pe gustul meu şi cum ideea suna prea bine, am plecat cu nişte emoţii la drum. Şi cum ziceam, în prima jumătate m-am bucurat de descrieri, am văzut locurile şi oraşul, clădirile, oamenii, arena, antrenamentele şi-am aflat tot ce era de aflat, şi simţeam aşa cum neuronii mei ţopăie. De ce? Pentru că e ceva original şi bine scris, te prinde de la primele pagini şi vrei şi tu să participi la o luptă în arenă. Chit că vei fi făcut praf până să ajungi să respiri a doua oară, dar... e de la adrenalină. În timp ce citeşti şi afli tot mai multe, îţi creşte pulsul şi fie că vrei sau nu, ajungi să fii interesat de lupte, să cunoşti regulile, să-nveţi să controlezi un lac şi să lucrezi cu el, să vrei să devii mai bun pe zi ce trece şi să câştigi. Ce sentiment poate să fie mai puternic decât să ştii c-ai luptat pentru viaţa ta şi-ai învins?
Iar când Delaney mai toarnă şi nişte emoţii peste toate astea, mai bagă nişte suspans, o întorsătură, două de situaţie, nişte certuri, o intrigă, se mai înjunghie unii, mai se împacă cineva cu cineva, atunci romanul devine şi mai bun. Personal, aş zice că, dacă în prima parte aveam impresia că mănânc o îngheţată de ciocolată bună, dar nu impresionantă, în a doua jumătate m-am trezit că devorez o îngheţată cu treisprezece arome, toate gustoase, cremoase, reci, şi care te fac să nu prea vrei să mănânci în public. Că nah, zgomotele şi ce sunete mai scoţi tu, s-ar putea să pună lumea pe gânduri.
Deşi a fost doar primul volum, uitându-mă în urmă, pot să spun că se vede o evoluţie a lui Leif. Nu mai e atât de impulsiv, îşi controlează puterea şi atacurile, ştie de ce-i în stare, îşi acceptă greşelile şi înfrângerea, iar dacă pierde nu se enervează, ci foloseşte asta că pe-o lecţie. Plus că, pe lângă antrenamente şi cunoştinţe despre arenă şi lupte, Leif mai învaţă şi cum să fie un om mai bun, să nu mai pună totul la suflet, să nu se mai lase dus de ură sau de lăcomie, cum să fie mai înţelegător şi să gândească la rece. Abilităţi ce-i sunt de folos unui luptător şi-i pot salva viaţa la fel de mult cum o fac muşchii şi strategiile.
Mi-au plăcut şi celelalte personaje, dar nu le înşir aici, căci aş striga toată cartea : )), şi Delaney a reuşit să facă ce puţini autori reuşesc. Nu există bine şi rău în "Arena 13" şi fiecare îşi urmăreşte interesele, însă de mult nu mi s-a mai întâmplat să văd cum un personaj ucide, e egoist, rece, calcă pe cadavre şi tot ce vrea e şi mai mult sânge, şi să-mi placă, iar când vezi alt personaj ce e răbdător, simpatic, prietenos, calculat, are grijă de alţii şi luptă drept, să-mi vină să-l bat eu. De ce? Pentru că al doilea moare mai repede şi nimeni n-are nevoie de o povară lângă el. Iar cartea asta te face să vezi şi să vrei să fii şi tu la fel de răzbunător, iubitor de sânge, de omor, să vrei să te baţi pentru o victorie, pentru bani, pentru femei/bărbaţi sau pentru simplă plăcere, fiindcă aşa merg lucrurile.
Recomand cartea asta? Normal, mai întrebi?! A fost un roman fix pe gustul meu, adică a avut personaje bine construite, care ştiu ce vor, când vor şi sunt în stare să facă absolut orice ca să obţină asta, a avut replici ironice şi dialog bine scris. A avut acţiune şi suspans, dar şi momente de calm, ce te făceau să fii şi mai agitat, căci ştiai că urmează o bătaie zdravănă sau o vărsare de sânge. Mi-au plăcut tare mult regulile, antrenamentele şi tot ce-am aflat despre arenă şi lupte, iar faptul c-au fost şi originale, dar şi s-au potrivit (nimic n-a fost pus acolo doar să fie) a făcut totul să fie genial.
Nu cred că trebuie să fii adolescent să citeşti asta sau să-ţi placă un anume gen, să mai fi citit de la Delaney sau să-ţi placă luptele şi gladiatorii neapărat. Nu c-ar fi cu gladiatori, dar ştii ce zic. Însă nu recomand cartea asta dacă nu-ţi place sângele, te deranjează când moare multă lume, nu vrei să citeşti despre lupte, să vezi lupte, s-auzi de lupte şi să ajungi să visezi despre ele. Nu e despre prietenie sau despre familie sau despre vreo poveste de dragoste. Da, sunt şi astea în poveste, dar accentul se pune pe lupte, pe câştig, pe sacrificiu şi pe momentul ăla când adversarul moare de mâna ta. M, ţi-am făcut poftă? : )

Mi-am dorit de foarte mult timp să citesc această carte și iată că acesta a fost momentul ei. Primesc adesea întrebări asemănătoare cu „de ce cumperi atâtea cărți dacă nu le citești?”. Ei bine, fiecare carte are timpul ei rezervat undeva în viitor și decât să îmi pară rău că nu mai găsesc o carte peste câțiva ani, mai bine stă în bibliotecă la mine tot acest timp ca mai apoi să mă pot bucura de ea.
Nu pot să zic că aveam așteptări prea mari de la această carte fiind și una destinată, în special, copiilor de peste 11-12 ani, zic eu. Pentru că am pornit în lecturarea acesteia fără să am idei preconcepute, am putut să simt întreaga acțiune exact așa cum este transmisă. „Arena 13” tratează o idee originală, destul de interesantă, cu care eu cred că se puteau face mai multe. Luptele ce se dau în Arenă sunt de-a dreptul șocante iar regulile după care se joacă sunt de neimaginat.
Aflăm despre personajul principal că are abilități la care cei din jur nu se așteptau, dar din momentul în care secrete despre trecutul lui ies la iveală, totul capătă sens, secrete pe care însuși personajul nu le știa despre el. Aceste abilități, însă, mi s-au părut că nu au fost „exploatate” atât de mult pe cât se putea. Am avut mereu senzația că acțiunea se baza mai mult pe restul personajelor și pe calitățile acestora, punându-l în umbră pe Leif, personajul principal.
Am apreciat cât de mult am putut modul în care este scrisă cartea, narațiune combinată cu suficient de multă descriere astfel încât să nu mă plictisesc, dar să îmi și pot forma o imagine concretă asupra personajelor și a orașului în care se desfășoară totul.
Am avut parte de mega dezvăluiri la care nu mă așteptam și care m-au luat prin surprindere, am fost nevoită să recitesc de câteva ori pentru a fi sigură pe ce tocmai aflasem. Pe tot parcursul cărții simțeam constant un mister care plutește în aer care m-a determinat să citesc mai departe, așteptând să se întâmple ceva care să mă uimească de-a dreptul, care să mă facă să citesc fără să respir.
Faptul că acesta este primul volum dintr-o trilogie mă face să am speranțe că ceea ce urmează va fi mult mai intens și am de gând să continui. Am mai auzit și păreri că totul ar deveni mult mai interesant în privința personajului principal.
Recomand această carte tuturor peste 12-13 ani care doresc să citească ficțiune, dar totuși care să fie ușor de înțeles. Mai sunt scene explicite cu acțiuni dureroase și, poate, puțin scârboase, dar nimic îngrijorător.

Trebuie să vă mărturisesc că am avut o mică de tot reţinere înainte de a mă afunda în lectura cărţii Arena 13, întrucât Joseph Delaney e un autor de la care citisem şi îndrăgisem nespus de mult numai cărţile din seria Cronicile Wardstone, apărute tot la Corint Junior. Îmi era oarecum teamă că nu se va ridica această nouă serie la nivelul aşteptărilor mele şi voi fi nevoită să-l cobor pe autor de pe piedestalul copilăriei mele.
Pe parcursul lecturii, am avut permanenta senzaţie că mă regăsesc tot în universul Wardstone, întâlnind acelaşi gen de personaje, cu motivări asemănătoare, recunoscând un tipar, o reţetă încercată deja de autor cu care ştia că nu va da greş. În Wardstone îl aveam pe Tom şi înfruntarea cu Necuratul care i-a distrus familia, urmând lumea în care trăieşte, în timp ce în Arena 13 îl avem pe Leif, un orfan care îşi doreşte să devină un luptător pentru oportunitatea de a-l ucide pe Hob, djinn-ul care l-a lăsat fără părinţi şi care işi alege micul dejun, prânzul şi cina dintre locuitorii comunităţii, sădind teamă în sufletele tuturor. Dacă în Wardstone e plin de personaje feminine puternice, cea mai importantă de menţionat fiind protagonista Alice, aici am cunoscut-o pe Kwin, fata maestrului lui Leif, care şi-ar dori ca femeile să aibă şi ele dreptul de a participa la luptele în Arenă, fiind chiar mai bună decât mulţi dintre ucenicii tatălui său, ambele fete din aceste serii dezvoltând o pasiune pentru erou şi băgându-l în buclucuri, cu diferenţa doar a relaţiei dintre acestea şi maestrul protagonistului. Chiar şi maestrul Tyron mi-a amintit de Vraci prin replici şi acţiuni.
Arena 13 e un loc cu reguli binedefinite în care se folosesc lacii, un fel de umanoizi cu inteligenţă artificială pe care maeştrii îi antrenează cu un limbaj de programare încă nu foarte bine desluşit pentru a putea lupta în faţa oamenilor - un luptător min în spatele unui singur lac împotriva unui luptător mag aflat în spatele a trei laci (după 5 minute aceştia vor lupta în faţa lacilor). Deşi pare o luptă nedreaptă, dezechilibrată, de cele mai multe ori învingând combatantul mag, există multe strategii pe care luptătorii min le pot folosi pentru a câştiga în mod spectaculos. Meciurile se termină la prima tăietură aducătoare de sânge, nu moare nimeni decât în meciurile de revanşă sau în cele în care Hob provoacă un luptător min la luptă.
Deşi este o serie pentru copii, lectura ei a fost extrem de palpitantă şi am rămas cu multe curiozităţi şi întrebări la care sper să aflu răspunsul în volumele ulterioare. O recomand fanilor Cronicile Wardstone, cu menţiunea că aceasta mi s-a părut o serie mai bună, deşi nu îmi dau seama dacă asta se datorează faptului că e seria cu care am fost obişnuită sau chiar aşa să fie.

Trebuie să vă mărturisesc că am avut o mică de tot reţinere înainte de a mă afunda în lectura cărţii Arena 13, întrucât Joseph Delaney e un autor de la care citisem şi îndrăgisem nespus de mult numai cărţile din seria Cronicile Wardstone, apărute tot la Corint Junior. Îmi era oarecum teamă că nu se va ridica această nouă serie la nivelul aşteptărilor mele şi voi fi nevoită să-l cobor pe autor de pe piedestalul copilăriei mele.
Pe parcursul lecturii, am avut permanenta senzaţie că mă regăsesc tot în universul Wardstone, întâlnind acelaşi gen de personaje, cu motivări asemănătoare, recunoscând un tipar, o reţetă încercată deja de autor cu care ştia că nu va da greş. În Wardstone îl aveam pe Tom şi înfruntarea cu Necuratul care i-a distrus familia, urmând lumea în care trăieşte, în timp ce în Arena 13 îl avem pe Leif, un orfan care îşi doreşte să devină un luptător pentru oportunitatea de a-l ucide pe Hob, djinn-ul care l-a lăsat fără părinţi şi care işi alege micul dejun, prânzul şi cina dintre locuitorii comunităţii, sădind teamă în sufletele tuturor. When I first picked up this book and read the synopsis, I wasn't really impressed. From what the synopsis suggested, the book was based, in my opinion, on an over used plot in novels these days, with the protagonist's parents being killed by the antagonist of the novel, resulting in the protagonist looking for vengeance against the antagonist. However, as Joseph Delaney is one or my favorite authors, I decided to read this book anyway, and I am certainly glad that I did!
Throughout the whole novel, Delaney works hard to create a brand new world for this new series, informing the readers of the history and beliefs surrounding Arena 13, as well as giving us details on how the city works on every level in society, giving the readers a real insight in to Delaney's newest creation.
Along with this new world, we are of course introduced to new interesting characters, including the main protagonist Leif, Kwin, Tyron and of course Hob, the main antagonist. I feel that for this book, Delaney spends a lot of time and effort on the characters, focusing on making the characters within the book relate-able to the readers, providing us with a connection to characters, while the novel portrays strong character development throughout.
As for my views on the main story, it is not at all what I had expected. Delaney fills the novel with subtle clues leading up to major surprises within the book, as well as unexpected twists throughout the novel, making this an enjoyable read, especially for fans of the Hunger Games and the Spooks series.
However, I do feel obliged to say that although this novel is done to a high standard, there is a fair amount description given in some rather gory scenes, particularly near the end of the novel. If you think this maybe a problem for you, you may want to look at the spoiler for a brief summary of the scene concludes, so as to help make up your mind.
Also, although I have spoken highly of this book, I feel that little is accomplished in this book, which i believe Delaney does deliberately, as I think this book is mainly setting up this new universe, allowing Delaney now to focus fully on the story at hand in the upcoming Arena 13 series, which if are as good as this book, I am thoroughly excited for.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to young adults and fans of the Hunger Games and Spooks series, as well as to Divergent and Maze Runner fans.
P.S. This novel is particularly complex, as there is quite a lot to remember throughout the novel, which is needed to understand what is going on throughout the novel.

Леко съм разочарована, но се радвам, че прочетох книгата. Историята беше интересна и доста странна, автора се беше постарал да измисли свои думи като ордум, Крансин, улум и т.н., които първоначално не можах да разбера какво точно означват, но след известно време (и препрочитане на някои части) схванах. Героите имаха необичайни имена( е, някои като Лейф или Дейнън), което също ми хареса. Хареса ми цялостното развитие на действията, защото мен заглавието ме подведе и очаквах неконтролируем бой на Арена 13, а всъщност имаше повече от това. Нещата обаче които не харесах са две: прекаленото бързо развитие на действие и плоските герои. Не успях да се "свържа" с никой от тях, а с тези с които си мислих, че бих могла ме подведоха. Това са двата минуса, заради които давам на тази книга 3 звезди.

Харесах “Чиракът на Прогонващия духове” на Джузеф Дилейни, продължението “Седмият син” ме остави с по-смесени чувства, но интересът ми бе достатъчен, за да седна да прочета началото на нова поредица от него – “Арена 13″, което обещава нещо като гладиаторски битки сред фентъзи свят. Попаднах в още една приятно изградена реалност, в която мизерията на ежедневието е гарнирана с магично господство от чудовище на име Таласъма, което може да сменя тела и по своя прищявка отвлича хора или се изправя срещу най-добрите от бойците на Арената.

When I started to read it, I couldn’t stop until it was finished in one night.
I absolutely loved this book. I believe that this is one of the best young adult books that I have read so far this year. I also think that it is one of the best books that Joseph has written to date ( I read 6 books from Spook’s series). I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series entitled MY NAME IS KWIN.
The plot of the book is taking place in a futuristic world, where in past humans developed artificial technologies and built robots with high intellectual abilities. After a while this creatures took power in the world and made for humans a kind of reservation secured from the world by powerful walls. All that were allowed people to do, is to fight one against another. For the best fighters there was organized a special arena, where they could fight using lacs – primitive fighting robots, that can be commanded by step move made in the sequence of Nym code (something similar to a programming language, consisted of moves).
It feels like magical super glue has been applied as you are led deeper into the complex world of Arena 13. As you traverse its many levels, it reads as if you're peeling away the layers of fantasy onion - the more that you read, the further you are plunged into the world of combat, fighting and danger.
I loved the sub-plot surrounding the mysterious creature Hob, an evil being who delights in torturing people, displaying his devastating power by challenging an Arena 13 combatant in a fight to the death whenever he chooses. Hob's character is very vague; there's just enough detail to let your imagination fill in the gaps, but it works. It is very powerful and sublime.
Will people manage to take back power over wold and overcome this high intellectual, but dangerous artificial creatures? Is human nature able to get back world leadership?

A rather enjoyable book, though nothing remarkable.
However: the characters and world hold a promise for more, so it is possible the series will get much better. I doubted between 2 and 3 stars, but gave it 3 stars cause of the promise.

O lectură cu un ritm destul de alert, deși nu se întâmplă extraordinar de multe lucruri, iar autorul este tare zgârcit cu detaliile a ceea ce s-a întâmplat cu oamenii înainte de a fi închiși în Midgard - un fel de război cu roboții umanoizi creați de ei? De ce trebuie să se lupte între ei în Arena 13, când a mai rămas doar o mână de oameni? Ca să creeze locuri de muncă? O explicație cam ciudată, după părerea mea. I-aș fi dat mai mult de trei stele dacă acțiunea ar fi început înainte să se termine cartea. Когато Гери види нещо за "бой" го поръчва, а и описанието беше съвсем различно.(Няма никакви гладиаторски борби!)
Явно някакво програмистче, което не е влизал в зала е писал антиутопия, цялата история с боевете 3 към 1 е смешна отстрани (освен ако си нямаш джойстик), пое да види някой брой на Хип Шоу, ще му се изясни мънинко. Става въпрос за някакви полузомбита, които се бият, докато самите участници играят степ зад тях. Авторът се е напънал да ма и кървави неща, но си личат изкуствено, защото е реално тая безумно смешна арена е на 90% безопасна (но забранена за жени ъф корс)
Светът се е получил някакъв буламач в опита да е съвременен фюжън, по-добре да си беше останал на близкоизточни войни и джинове(но истински) вместо да слага кодиращи езици глупости, споменавания на Маори и имена от скандинавската митология, които са нелогични.
Отношението към жените е като на всяко незадоволено геймърче, не знае нищо за тях, освен едрогърдите героини в игрите (никоя жена нямаше да се даде на някакъв си Таласъм, само да си знаете), женските образи са двуизмерни, при Куин откровено глупави и лигави, като на презадоволено момиченце.
Мислите си, че с мъжете се е справил ми справил се е - непоклатимият Лейф действа точно като разюздан тийн и взима най-тъпите решения. Тайрън все едно е на 18, особено в последната сцена - честно, не може ли да има поне един, който да се държи като възрастен, но това е авторово безсилие на героя да покаже колко могъщ е врагът му(ако имаше поне малко мозък, нямаше да играе по неговите правила, след като очевидно не действат, това дори някой превъзбуден юноша може да достигне до заключението)
Изобщо ако сте геймър на 14 книгите (защото било поредица) е писана за вас, ако разбирате нещо от бойни изкуства, ще се смеете, признавам за хубавата идея всички да се бият с по две оръжия (аз самата съм почитател), но не се обяснява нищо за тренировката, която е много по различна от битка с едно(особено с тоягите, Куин е достигнала някакви умения, но бегли, можеше тя да е тайното оръжие в революцията на баща си, но той предпочита непознато момче, отколкото нея), но така е, когато вмести да е бие по круша ли гуми се натискат само копченца.

I am a fan of Joseph Delaney's work mostly because of The Wardstone Chronicles which is one of my fav series!!! If I am to be honest, even if I was excited when I found out about this new series, I really didn't expect much from it especially after reading the synopsis. I gave it a try though and I'm glad that I did, because the book delivers. At first I was off the track with everything that happened in the book, I wasn't really grasping the world. I was a bit confused with the events and practically my eyebrows where high in my hairline the first half of the book, because the author was very low on details. Nothing was fully explained and it felt that parts of the story were lacking but still that didn't put me off and it actually made me want to read it more. I was thirsty for details and my focus was fully within the story. When you read further into the story things become very interesting and you actually want to know what's going to happen next. Yes parts of the story were predictable and I did get the feeling that the book was too light for Delaney, but the world he created is so friggin interesting. There is a mix of mythology, with a dash of dystopian, arena fights, interesting characters and background story ( yes the very little of it). I have the feeling that the second book is going to be at a deeper level. Things will get into their places and we won't have that lacking feeling anymore.
I ended up really enjoying the book and yes maybe it's not as epic as The Wardstone Chronicles but the world that Joseph created in Arena 13 is awesome and original ( I mean I didn't read anything like this so I don't know for sure).
If you are a Wardstone Chronicles fan I recommend you to read Arena 13 without having Wardstone expectations because there is not even a vibe from that series and you'll feel like the candy is not as sweet as you remember. But that shouldn't put you off at all because really Arena 13 is friggin brilliant once you get deeper into the story.
Can't wait to read the next one!!!!

Joseph Delaney has created an interesting world although sometimes a little too complex. I like the similarity between programming lacres and programming computers. However, I expect a lot from the author about lacres and their consciences in the next book.
The characters are well introduced but I could not tie me to the hero, Leif, neither to Kwin (I hope she will grow up fast and change behavior). The author has a nice pen that allowed me to enjoy this book despite this lack of attachment to the characters. The last part of the book deserved to be a bit more developed too.
It is a good read that makes you want to know what happens next. Attention to sensitive readers because there are bloody scenes; from 13 years seems ok to me.
I read this book (arc in french) with the bookclub Lecthot in exchange for my opinion.

Les personnages sont bien introduits mais je n’ai pas pu m’attacher au héros Leif, ni à Kwin (j’espère qu’elle va grandir vite et changer de comportement). L’auteur a une belle plume qui m’a permis d’apprécier ce livre malgré ce manque d’attachement aux personnages. La dernière partie du livre aurait mérité d’être un peu plus développée aussi.
C’est donc une bonne lecture qui donne envie de connaitre la suite. Attention aux lecteurs sensibles car il y a des scènes sanglantes ; à partir de 13 ans me semble bien.

Ma première rencontre avec Joseph Delaney n'a malheureusement pas été mémorable. Pourtant son imagination avait de quoi donner quelque chose de très bon et l'univers qu'il a construit avec cette série et tout bonnement original et séduisant. Le reste n'est cependant pas à la hauteur. Des personnages manquant de charisme à l'intrigue pas toujours à la hauteur du monde créé, plus les pages défilaient, moins l'envie de continuer était présente. Le héros déçoit et les seconds rôles marquent peu ou sont agaçants. Les actes des personnages, surtout ceux du héros, qui commet des bourdes et ne va pas au bout des choses, sont loin de correspondre à la cruauté du monde qui s'étale devant eux. J'avais souvent l'impression d'avoir affaire à des gamins qui ne réfléchissaient pas et ça m'a hérissé. Un premier tome loin de m'avoir satisfait et une série que je ne poursuivrai pas.

En bref, dès les premières pages l'auteur nous entraine dans son monde avec des explications sur l'Arène 13 et les habitants du pays de Midgard. Mais petit à petit on apprend de nouvelles choses, on s'attache à Leif qui veut se prouver qu'il est capable de combattre et de débarrasser le pays de Hod, ce djinn qui terrorise tout le monde et qui s'autorise tout. J'ai adoré le récit qui se passe dans le futur mais dont on a l'impression qu'il est dans le passé. Une ambiance bien faite, des personnages agréables et une intrigue qui nous réserve quelques surprises, voici les ingrédients de ce premier tome qui promet une série très intéressante !

J'ai adoré le récit qui se passe dans le futur mais dont on a l'impression qu'il est dans le passé. Une ambiance bien faite, des personnages agréables et une intrigue qui nous réserve quelques surprises, voici les ingrédients de ce premier tome qui promet une série très intéressante !

Superbe. Une belle découverte. J'ai aimé le style, le héros, l'histoire... j'ai envie de lire la suite! Et quelle imagination! Une Terre du futur retombée dans un mode de vie archaïque après je ne sais quel conflit causé par une technologie mal maîtrisée, des combats de presque zombies programmables se déroulant dans une arène, des paris, des djinns, des danses de combat... des morts, du sang et des larmes... Bien sûr ça n'est pas trop violent, il s'agit d'un roman jeunesse quand même. Bref je recommande!

Идеята за програмируеми с програмен език човешки роботи като част от битки на арените е доста интересна, но Арена 13 е елементарно написана, кратка книжка за 12 годишни.

I knew this book had a gladiator theme going on, but I definitely know it would be such a complex story, and that it wasn't gladiator fighting exactly. This story was set so far in the future that they had reverted back to Ancient times. I found myself re-reading passages with long explanations because I knew I just had to properly understand the definitions and how it worked.
This is so different to his other series, and I'm not sure if I'll buy the remaining two. I think I will, because this is a series I could re-read later.
The one thing that frustrated me about this novel was So annoying. Can't wait for her to be taught a proper lesson.

Interesting, but reads as a really long introduction to the next book. I enjoyed it though, and may well pick up the next book.
I have to say that I thought this was middle grade, and honestly it sort of reads more like a young YA book - certainly in terms of violence!
I enjoyed the world building and the concept, and I really liked some of the history you learn of why the wheel and the arena are like they are. I’d like to know more about why they started at all though, and more about the world outside of the main city. Again, I think we’ll get that in the next book, and I’m really keen to see it. Especially with what Leif is planning to do at the end.
I found Hob to be a good villain/ monster but while he was scary, it didn’t feel properly real, even at the end. He feels a bit two dimensional, even through the haze of Leif’s anger.
Leif is quite good as a lead - I like his guts and determination. He also can be lead by his anger though which is a little frustrating, if understandable!
Overall, a pretty good read but nothing stellar. I do get the sense that it’s about to pick up a bit for book 2 though, and will be interested to see where it goes next.

I had to get this book on Audible because it doesn't look like it's available in the states. At first I had a REALLY hard time with this book, but as it went on I really enjoyed it.

Joseph Delaney est un maitre incontesté des univers complexes et complet, aux textes qu'on ne peut pas s'arrêter de lire, avide d'en savoir la suite. Ce livre ne fait pas exception, mais quelle dinguerie !!

Students will like the action in the book, but I won't remember it with its flat characters, meandering plot, and contradictions. I had more questions at the end than answers. I have read a lot of Delaney's books and I wouldn't call him a flowery writer that inspires me with his word choices. Instead, I like his simple plots, strong character arc, and creepy monsters. His books have violence in them but because the villains are monsters, it creates a slight buffer for younger readers. This book is violent but the monsters are more human-like and characters are beheaded, cannibalized, and stabbed. There's some blood draining too. This book reads like a draft and the plot holes and lack of character development left me frustrated. Like I said, many of my students will like the action and won't notice the conventional flat characters, but I was disappointed.
Leif is a thirteen-year-old orphan that won a lottery ticket to train with the master, Tyron, who runs a school for fighters. The trainees combat in Arena 13, a place where bets are placed on who will win, as the object is to be the first person to cut an opponent with a sword. Some fights are to the death and others are not. The combatants have two android-like lacs they learn to fight with in the arena. Lacs is an abbreviation of the word "similacrum" for the android's are in the image of humans. These characters are never really explained. It is hinted that they might have a consciousness and the great arena fighter "Math" relied on his lac like a human but this is not explored.
Leif is motivated to fight in the arena and his father has trained him. I was never sure why he wanted to fight. He's the best stick-fighter in his provincial town. When he comes to the city he wows everyone with his incredible skills, but his first fight is for money not because he loves it. He really doesn't have to overcome many internal obstacles in the plot. External, yes. Internal, no. I really thought this was underdeveloped. Leif's only problem comes from a romantic subplot with a girl and even then his actions are out of kindness and some peer pressure. He does not have much by way of flaws and is pretty mature.
Some contradictions surround his father when he says that he talked about the arena a lot and yet Leif is very naive about how dangerous it is. I would have thought the father would have trained his son to protect himself and warned him of the evil that haunted their family. He'd know his son was a target. Leif is a sensible kid and his motivations for fighting seemed in contrast with the recklessness and danger of being a fighter. When he wins the lottery ticket and Tyron shows him what he's getting into the motivation to stay and his inner monologue as to why he continued was just that he liked to fight.
The character arc of Leif reveals Leif as a loner who can't bond with others, but this was not revealed in the beginning strongly enough. At least I missed it. Leif has people reaching out to him and being generous. He is not isolated but favored by Tyron. He becomes friends with one of his roommates and Tyron's daughter. Again, just one of many contradictions. I thought the introduction of the game and patterning of the Arena was clunky. Rather than work it into the plot as he does later in the book, the beginning has two pages that say, "Dictionary of Nym." I skimmed it. The Nym language didn't work for me either. They use English to control the robots but its called, Nym. He explains that wurde is different than word, but that is it. Again, I wanted more depth.
The mish-mash of mythologies worked against the world-building. Sometimes I'm okay with a mix but I had a problem with visualizing this story because the Arena is so gladiator-like. I had a picture of Rome which was contrasted by Leif, the wolf imagery, and Midgard that is from Norwegian mythology and the Hob who sucks blood from victims making him more like the vampire folklore from Eastern Europe. My world-building was garbled by the contrasting images.
Kwin is Tyron's daughter and she wants to be a fighter. Her arc is clear although her character is flat because of the first person narration. She's more mischievous and a rule-breaker. She captures teenage rebellion and I found her more interesting than Leif. I would have liked it better if she had been the protagonist. She's flawed, obviously a talented fighter, and oppressed in a prescribed gender role. I recommend skipping this and reading Delaney's Spook's or Last Apprentice series.
