Inspiré par l’affection qu’il porte à la personne et au personnage de sa mère, Michel Tremblay renoue avec la veine centrale qui alimente le cœur de son œuvre. Voilà un roman d’une immense tendresse, qui nous fait remonter aux origines mêmes de son projet littéraire, bien avant que Nana ne devienne l’universelle Grosse femme d’à côté…

Né en 1942, Michel Tremblay grandit dans un appartement de Montréal où s'entassent plusieurs familles. Ses origines modestes marqueront d'ailleurs ses œuvres, souvent campées au cœur de la classe ouvrière, où misères sociale et morale se côtoient. En 1964, il participe au Concours des jeunes auteurs de Radio-Canada, avec une pièce de théâtre intitulée Le train, et remporte le premier prix. C'est à peine un an plus tard qu'il écrit l'une de ses œuvres majeures, Les belles-sœurs, dont le succès perdure. La pièce est jouée pour la première fois en 1968 au Théâtre du Rideau Vert.

Michel Tremblay est l'auteur d'un nombre considérable de pièces de théâtre, de romans, et d'adaptations d'œuvres d'auteurs et de dramaturges étrangers. On lui doit aussi quelques comédies musicales, des scénarios de films et un opéra. Ses univers sont peuplés de femmes, tantôt caractérielles et imparfaites, tantôt fragiles et attachantes, qu'il peint avec réalisme et humour. Vivant les difficultés du quotidien, ses personnages au dialecte coloré ont d'ailleurs contribué à introduire dans la dramaturgie et la littérature d'alors un niveau de langue boudé des artistes : le joual.

En 2006, il remporte le Grand Prix Metropolis bleu pour l'ensemble de son œuvre.

En 2017, le Prix Gilles-Corbeil lui est décerné pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre.

La fin de ce roman est épique! Quel personnage que celui de Ti-Lou, la « guidoune » de luxe d’Ottawa! Hyper attachante aussi la scène de consolation par cette dernière qui s’attache, comme nous, tout au long de cette traversée, à cette Nana terrifiée par son destin… Et que dire de la finale : d’une lucidité et d’une fatalité désarmante! Pour le moins très efficace. 4 1/2 étoiles pour cet autre opus presque parfait de Tremblay.

omg ça finit comme ça ?? c'était vraiment bon !! nana est très attachante et c'est le fun de l'accompagner à travers son voyage. c'est aussi rafraichissant de lire un roman où les personnages parlent québecois ahah. tokebac icitte.

Just when I thought I was free of Michel Tremblay's family, whom I've already followed in nine books (albeit tangentially in the "Notebooks" trilogy), I have to discover another set of books about them. The "Desrosiers Diaspora" series focuses on Nana, the matriarch of the clan, who appears in the first two books in the "Chronicles of the Plateau Mont-Royal." The first books picks her up in 1913, being raised by her grandparents in a small town on the Prairies. A call to join her mother in Montreal leads to a cross-country train ride, with stops along the way to stay with other members of her far-flung family. Each is beautifully drawn by Tremblay, with their natures laid bare during the few days Nana spends with each of them. I don't know how many books there are in this series, but I'm on board as they catch up to the start of the Chronicles just after World War II.

I thought about rounding up to three stars (read 'adding a gratuitous star for no particular reason other than I wanted to avoid being the one of first two-star ratings with a review'). But, if I give the book three stars then every time I open GR for the next however many days/weeks the recommendations box will say 'Because you enjoyed Crossing the Continent...' and I will feel annoyed and irritated because I did not enjoy Crossing the Continent. I, for some reason I still fail to understand, forced myself to get to the end of the book with the opposite of enjoyment for it. And, I would like to avoid being repeatedly irritated by the recommendations section even more than I would like to avoid giving one the first two-star ratings with a review. This book has annoyed and irritated me enough. Now, I can return it to the library and move onto something more interesting and hopefully much more enjoyable.

p.s. despite the characters' repeated claims (repeated ad nauseam as much else is repeated in this book) Saskatoon to Montreal is no where near 'crossing the continent'. It is not even crossing half the continent. It is crossing only about 40% of the continent.

Michel Tremblay est à son meilleur quand son héros ou son est la victime des gestes déloyaux de ses amis" "Les belles soeurs" et "Hosanna" sont deux exemples du genre. Dans "La traversée du continent", la héroïne Rhéauna bénéfice des gestes loyaux de sa famille. Le résultat est beaucoup trop sucré.
Parfois le roman devient ridicule. Tremblay décrit Ti-Lou la cousine de Rhéauna qui est une guidoune dont les affaires marchent bien comme étant une femme indépendante modèle. Ti-Lou a choisi cette profession après avoir lu "La dame aux Camélias" d'Alexandre Dumas fil ce qui démontre la valeur de la littérature.

C'est toujours un grand plaisir de lire Michel Tremblay. Basée sur la vie de sa mère, La diaspora des Desrosiers débute en Saskatchewan. On y découvre d'abord les grands-parents de Nana, puis au fil du voyage, 2 soeurs de son grand-père et une cousine de sa mère, Ti-Lou que j'espère bien revoir au fil de la saga. Mais le dernier paragraphe me réservait une surprise à laquelle je ne m'attendais pas. De l'excellent Tremblay.

J'ai enfin terminé la lecture de ce livre. C'est la belle langue de l'univers de Michel Tremblay que j'ai retrouvée avec plaisir. Les personnages sont délicieux. Je vais poursuivre la série, mais par intervalle.

I love Michel Tremblay's writing. This book is a gem. His obvious affection for his characters, while still making them fully human (ie flawed). His gentle humor.

I hope that there is a second volume of the story of Nana. As the book end the story was just beginning!

This book is full of strong willed, resentful, domineering woman -- but it's not they who stand out so much as the passive, weak-willed men around them. Seriously, my impression is that the fathers (or lack of fathers!) were the impetus for the dysfunctional personalities we see in great-aunt Regina, great aunt Bebette, and second cousin Ti-Lou. Unfortunately, history seems to be repeating itself with the young protagonist Nana who crosses the continent, ostensibly to be re-united with a mother who loves and wants her, only to find out she is needed to care for her mother's new baby. When her mother states she is using her maiden name again, the message is clear: we have another case of father in absentia which forces the mother outside the home to make ends meet and propels the child into an adult role in the home to fill the slack.
Tremblay shows how young Francophone women at the turn of the 20th century were victims, not only to the tyranny of their families, but also to the tyranny of the Catholic Church.
By the end of this book, I was very happy to be a woman living in the 21st century, thank you very much.

J'ai vraiment apprécié ce premier roman d'une série de 4 sur la jeunesse de Rhéauna, la « grosse femme d'à côté », qui est un des piliers de l'univers de Tremblay. J'ai d'autant plus aimé ce premier roman de la série parce que j'avais lu l'été passé, par inadvertance, le dernier tome de cette série de 4 « La grande mêlée ». Bien sûr j'avais aimé ce roman mais sans plus, peut-être parce que justement, il me manquait trop de clés pour réellement l'apprécier. Mais de revenir en arrière et me faire introduire les personnages à nouveau, que je connaissais déjà un peu, a ajouté de la consistence à l'histoire. Le grandes tantes ont pris vie et cet univers s'est enfin allumé. La grande traversée du continent est savoureuse. C'est aussi le passage de cette petite fille à la vie adulte de façon sec. Son univers s'écroule et elle part rejoindre une mère qu'elle ne connait à peu près pas, dans une ville qu'elle ne connait pas. Les rencontres sont intrigantes et les personnages savoureux. À lire absolument par les fans de Tremblay et les autres :)

"Crossing the Continent" proves to be a fascinating, fateful journey for young Rheauna, known as "Nana". Author Michael Tremblay sends his girl heroine on an epic train trip across the Canadian countryside of the early 1900's as she rides to reunite with the mother who had abandoned her five years ago. Leaving behind her grandparents and their farm, Nana's trek entails three stops, and at each stop, Nana meets a different and disarming relative. Taking it all in, both what she can comprehend, and that which she can only contemplate, Nana eventually reaches her destination as a quite different girl than the one who first boarded the train. What she has left behind is not lost to her, and she gains much through her travels. Sometimes you have to let something go so that it can return to you in its own time and in its own way. "Crossing the Continent" is the first in Michael Tremblay's series of "Crossings" novels, providing the story and character origins of his acclaimed "Chronicles of the Plateau Mont-Royal".

Je vais essayer de écrire en français, pour pratiquer.

J'ai aimé la deuxième parti du livre mieux que le premier. J'aime l'aspect famillialle du livre. J'aime ce qu'on appris des charactères des personnages après que Rèaunna leurs rencontres. Mêmes si beaucoup des histoires sont tristes. Puis, j'aime aussi les descriptions de toutes les villes canadiennes. J'aime que tous les personnes se confie à Réaunna et lui parlent des choses un peu inappropriés. Et j'aime aussi Jacques, qui Réaunna aime.

Mais je trouve le fin du livre un peu abrupt.

A interesting and entertaining read focusing on the life of 10 year old Nana who is asked to move from her grandparents' home in Maria, Sask. to Montreal in 1913 where her mother now lives. On the train trip east, she must stop several times and at each stop meets a new relative and we learn of their complex and diverse lives as well.

This book was a good character study. Rheauna traveled across Canada to join a mother she had not seen for 5 years. She stayed with 3 different family members overnight on her long train trip. From each of these women she had the opportunity to see 3 very different ways a woman could live her life at that point in history. For a 10 year old this was a life changing experience. A good read.

Mon premier Michel Tremblay, ben oui! C'était très bon, j'ai beaucoup aimé ça. Tremblay a un grand talent pour brosser des personnages intéressants, même s'ils ne sont présents que quelques pages. J'aurais pris une trilogie de mille pages à propos d'à peu près tout le monde, surtout Ti-Lou. Je ne m'attendais pas du tout non plus à cette finale. J'ai bien hâte de lire la suite.

A real page turner, so good to read Tremblay's style again! A great trip with the main character and I can't wait to read the next one!
