While this isn't my favourite genre to read I actually enjoyed this one. It delivered something different for me to discover.

The story is very well put together and gives the reader something to hold onto throughout where you will spend equal time with either a few tears or a smile. I found the odd moment where I could cheerfully have chased some of the characters down and shaken some sense into them and this all added to the enjoyment.

The characters were all well thought out and reacted perfectly the whole way through the story. They also reacted realistically to events which helped enormously to keep the story flowing.

All in all I definitely recommend this one to anyone who likes a sweet story to fall in love with.

I own a hardback copy of this book.

A Caring Doc and a Calm Midwife Find Love!

This is the first time I read something by the authoress Tina Beckett and I enjoyed the angst filled romance that had a lot of good medical details. Always enjoy a writer who researches things thoroughly and can explain difficult concepts to their readers.

Midwife Jessica "Jess" Black is a dedicated and consummate professional who never loses her cool, especially in an emergency. Her work means a lot to her and with additional continuing training, she is assigned the tougher pregnancy cases. There is a reason for her calm demeanour too, her family even though loving, are always on her case to get married and have kids. To avoid these confrontations, she has moved away from London to Cambridge. However, a family gettogether brings everything to head with her twin sister, Abbie and it also introduces her to touch of romance.

By reputation, neonatologist Dr. Dean Edwards is known as a "playboy" in the hospital. He is unable to see Jess in emotional pain over the family medical emergency. In his need to comfort and alleviate her sorrow, he decides to protect Jess from the family's criticisms and her own insecurities by hatching a ruse of sorts. The doctor has his own past, torments and secrets that are hidden deep inside. And Jess might just be the one to heal him and make him feel worthy again.

This book is definitely filled with afflictions and familial issues. Both of the main protagonists have a lot to work through before they can move towards their attraction for each other. The supporting characters were annoying (especially Abbie and sometimes Jess' mother) but necessary for the plot. There were medical emergencies that were explained and handled well. I enjoyed reading about the cases and the doctors who handled it well.

The holiday season was celebrated well. There was some humour in parts, nothing laugh out loud, but it still provided some comic relief. Even if melodramatic, I enjoyed the premise of the book. I am curious to read other books in the Midwives On-Call and Midwives On-Call at Christmas series. If you enjoy a medical romance with main characters who have their own issues to solve before they care about each other in a English setting, you will like perusing this book.

I was pleased to have won this book in the Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

This was a relatively quick read and one that I enjoyed. If you like a nice sweet romance story, I would recommend this book. I shall be passing this book on to my daughter who loves romances where it involves doctors.
