A very emotional volume, but I think the plot could have be a little tighter. The storyline did drag on a bit more than it needed to.

Loved the fight at the end. Yukimura always knows how to end a volume!

Band 12 war wieder richtig spannend! So viele gute Konflikte, es hat richtig Spaß gemacht, es zu lesen. Bei weitem auch das beste Cover bisher!

A very sad Vol. where secondary stories take the focus and secondary characters get their own character development but always building Thorfinn's character development, a great nod towards askeladd and his dynamic with Thorfinn, a sad closure for this subplot and a wait for the consequences of this whole situation that was generated through Arnheid.

Un Vol. muy triste en donde historias secundarias toman el foco de atención y personajes secundarios obtienen su propio desarrollo de personaje pero siempre construyendo el desarrollo de personaje de Thorfinn, gran guiño hacia askeladd y su dinámica con Thorfinn, un cierre triste para esta subtrama y a esperar las consecuencias de toda esta situación que se genero a través de Arnheid.

Buah, hacía muuuuuchos años que no me pegaba una de esas épicas tardes de verano encerrao en casa sin parar de leer tebeos, de la comida a la cena. Con este segundo arco de Vinland Saga, el de "la esclavitud" he rememorado aquellas maratones de lectura y he disfrutado como un enano de paso. Menudo cambio de ritmo y de tono se marcan Yukimura y sus ayudantes en esta etapa que es todavía mejor que la primera, vaya montaña rusa de emociones (se me metió algo en el ojo un par de veces), vaya planificación del argumento, vaya manera de introducir un subtexto tan humanista en la evolución de los personajes, vaya facilidad para "manipular" al lector a su antojo y vaya fieras dibujando. Y no, no es perfecto y tiene sus cosillas (alguna casualidad argumental, algún personaje que enloquece quizá demasiado bruscamente, esos códices en manos de granjeros daneses y ese concepto de "utopía" un poco bastante adelantado a la época de la historia), pero son detalles en un tebeo tan bueno que da igual.

Ahhh, for god's sake 😭

The main themes and conflicts of the manga coalesce into one hell of a gut punch in this volume.

It is pretty random how the Gardar rampage has suddenly just unfolded almost out of the blue to shake things up and test Thorfinn's resolve. It feels a bit like a seperate gothic short story happening in the Vinland Saga universe. But it's not sticking out too badly, it does a good job setting in motion various moral dilemmas and tensions that were building up somewhere in the background, waiting to be properly addressed.

And this side of the plotline was just so much more compelling and evocative than the adventures of Ketil's sons. I could feel this overwhelming sense of gravity and hopelessness of the situation. Just when Ketil's farm was starting to seem a bit like too pleasant of an environment for a manga that is in part a slavery critique xD

Really stunning art to boot. Gardar was kinda giving me strong William Blake vibes.

This volume hit hard and has one of the best emotional moments ever. We pick up with Gardar who kills snakes men and he is racing when he meets his wife Arneis but Snake whose enraged catches him and imprisons him. Arneis is sad but at night with Thorfinn and Einar and old master Ketil she reveals her backstory and its heart wrenching and you feel for it. She goes to clean wounds of her captured husband only to set him free and the next few chapters deal with the consequences of it. Thorfinn and Einar agree to help Arneis but then one of the greatest emotional moments happens when they do. Thorfinn vs Snake and Arneis and Gardar escape only to have one of the greatest moments ever and its such an emotional one. It breaks you as both sides could be seen as right and you feel for all of them. This is another heartbreaking tale of Vinland Saga.

Rimas con Monster, de Urasawa, en este tomo. Historias secundarias que se vuelven principales y un intento de dar pinceladas a unas subtramas que se vuelven complejas con cada nombre propio, con cada panel que no es más que una mirada.
Un pequeño cierre de un personaje que no se merecía tanto dolor, un vistazo de Makoto Yukimura a la esclavitud, a esa faceta tonta de la historia.

En este tomo se matan dos hombres dejando a entrever todas las costuras de la guerra y la futilidad de cualquier asesinato en el mundo. Se trata de comprender que no hay una sola muerte a manos de otro hombre que tenga justificación y de que la violencia es un terreno fangoso en el que nunca hay que poner un pie.
Yukimura escribe, en uno de los cómics más crueles y más violentos que he leído, de qué forma se aprende a amar la paz.

Well, I don't mind what the author is trying to do. I couldn't care less about the larger themes but they were there from the beginning so it's good to see the series is coherent in its themes.
The thing is, getting all those mini intrigues is annoyingly reminiscent of reading a manga's early chapters where the author has no clue of the larger intrigue he will create so he simply wanders around, putting short story after short story to fill his weekly/monthly obligations. After a VERY long 9 volumes prologue, getting more "sub-prologues" will rapidly test my patience (something that should need no prove).

Nella fattoria di Ketil arriva Gardar, schiavo in fuga che ha massacrato la famiglia del suo padrone. Cerca sua moglie, che è quella stessa Armis che è la concubina di Ketil, che le è morbosamente affezionato, nonché sogno romantico di Einar che oramai ha instaurato un rapporto fraterno con Thorfinn. Questi si trova di fronte per la prima volta al dilemma: infrangere il suo giuramento di non combattere mai più, o combattere anche solo per difendersi?
Il vecchio padrone, verrà in aiuto ai tre schiavi, ma Serpe alla fine avrà la meglio, Gardar, già ferito a morte, decede, e i tre verranno imprigionati.
La storia e i disegni continuano a livelli qualitativi decisamente alti.

Este volumen me tocó el corazón, quien dirían que el pasado de Arnheid iba a ser tan triste y a derivar en algo trágico.
Esto solo me deja con más ganas de saber que será de ella, de Einar y de Thorfinn. Presiento que a partir de ahora Snake se va a volver alguien importante para el futuro de estos tres.

La presencia metafórica de Askeladd también fue un gran detalle, ya que este hombre dejó una profunda huella en la vida de Thorfinn; prácticamente fue su padre, aunque ambos hombres se cortarían una mano antes de admitirlo XD.

El arco ahora si comienza a despegar y a esta historia todavía le queda mucho que contarnos.

Una de las dos tormentas ya llego y señores vino a romper nuestros corazones.

Ahora que estuve desconectado del mundo retome a mi querido thorfinn y su arco del esclavo y que decir. Lo del esclavo fugitivo y la esclava de la granja Ketiel te pega y duro, se supone que esta es una trama secundaria con personajes secundarios y uno aparecido de la nada pero que toma por completo el protagonismo aqui.

El ver el pasado de la esclava, como paso de ser una tranquila ama a de casa a la actualidad y el esclavo como pasa a ser lo que es ahora.

el final te deja.... te deja, Makoto Yukimura sabe a lo que viene a jugar y juega con el lector a su perro antojo.

This is so peak, what the hell. Snake's reading of the bible about loving your enemies is so haunting contrasting to the events and decisions that happened in this volume. Moreover, Yukimura's afterword cuts straight about the silent laments of mistreatment especially in slavery in this world. And Thorfinn and Einar stand at that crossroads. Because they understand the pain of slavery all too well. My heart goes out to all of them, especially to Arnheid and Gardar.

Every volume I praise seemingly more than the last! So brilliant. Askeladd appearing to Thorfinn asking him if he will continue to honor the oath of non-violence as he’s encountered with the potential of a fight for the first time… *chef’s kiss*

I can’t wait to see where the story goes and where we’ll find our main character Thorfinn next

Ca faisait longtemps que je n'avais pas avancé dans ma lecture de ce manga, l'un des rares qui arrive à me capter et à le faire dans la durée. Il m'aura fallu quelques pas pour me remettre dedans mais une fois fait, j'ai tout de suite retrouvé ce qui me plaisait dans cette saga, et l'évolution de Thorfinn.
