This volume has some of my favourite scenes that cross over with the anime. It also has that one scene that always gets me. But I will not tell you because now you're curious.
There are lots of emotions in this volume, lots of heavy feels, the ones that punch you in the gut. We also get to see a softer side of Yusuke. The one he tries to hide, and build walls around. We also get to see the team in their down time. It's nice to see them trying to relax while not thinking about their pending doom.
We get some in-site on Hiei, his powers and how he fights. He missed two of the fights, so we never really get to see what he can do, or how much he has changed from earlier volumes.
What I loved the most about this volume, is the ending. All of these volumes ends with a sort of a cliff hanger, but this ending, this is real cliff-hanger. I'm so glade I have all of them, I don't think I could have survived having to wait for it. If you have never watched the anime, then you don't know what I'm talking about, then you'll be amazed and shocked at the same time.
But, I'm not telling.
All in all, as I have said for the other volumes, I dare you to take the plunge and read this outstanding series. You might be shocked about how much you love it!
Things heat up in this volume as we have our characters being pushed past their limits.
While the end of the final fight is a surprise it is a bit goofy how they move on. But the highlights of this volume are Yusuke showing who he really is and readying to unleash his new power. Hiei also gets a chance to shine as he goes toe to toe with two fights and gets to show off his sick moves. Kurama steps up last and his new appearance is one for the ages.
Overall, great stuff. This is when Yu Yu Hakusho becomes one of the GOAT animes. A 4 out of 5.
One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. First up is Yu Yu Hakusho!
Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. He’s hated by almost everyone around him and he knows it. When he’s killed after pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, he’s surprised to find from the afterlife that he has more people that love him than he ever realized after attending his own funeral as a ghost.
Against all odds, Yusuke makes a deal with the angel of death to turn his deviant behavior around in exchange for giving him another chance at life with his friends. He must prove himself that he’s worthy of being brought back to life by becoming a spirit detective, saving the lost souls of sorrowful ghosts one good deed at a time.
The spirit world is more complex than Yusuke realizes, however. He’s soon wrapped up in a world of cutthroat demons, evil spirits and other dark beings that have a bone to pick with him. While performing good deeds to save the living and the dead, Yusuke also finds the chance to put his supernaturally-enhanced martial arts abilities to use by fighting powerful paranormal foes from underworld societies.

Yu Yu Hakusho is extremely nostalgic and has a lot of appealing factors. The hilarious banter between Yusuke and his band of badass bros is the forefront of the series. Kuwabara is a lovable goofball who tries to mimic the tough guy antics of Yusuke while constantly revealing himself to be a huge softy with a heart bigger than his fake ego. Hiei is the classic edgy antihero that softens up and becomes gradually more sympathetic as you learn more about his tough upbringing. Kurama is pure class and elegance, his wits and tongue are as sharp as his looks. Then there’s the sassy, beautiful and hilarious Botan who acts as the grim reaper and leading lady. Quite the memorable crew.
Another great thing about the series that may seem odd to point out is the beautifully drawn 80’s inspired fashion. The characters change outfits almost every chapter and they always look clean and refined. It’s hard not to appreciate the style throughout the series. This coupled with the witty banter, crazy martial art demon fights, self-aware humor and fast paced story arcs with lots of action make it a pretty fun series.
While the series is simple and enjoyable, the story, world and villains aren’t that well made in my opinion. Everything seems made up on the fly with little logic or build up. The story and battle arcs get very repetitive and the second half of the series feels like a massive rehashing of everything we’ve already seen. The final arc and ending were unsatisfying and anticlimactic in my opinion. It introduced a bunch of new concepts out of nowhere and then did absolutely nothing with them. Then the series ends with a big cliffhanger with no real resolution.
Overall, I actually enjoyed the calm and relaxed chapters and subplots where it focuses on the main cast of characters bonding and hanging out with each other over the main plot, the battle arcs and the forgettable second half. I think the first arc of the story where it’s just Yusuke and Botan solving mysteries and saving the lives of lost souls was actually the best part of the entire series. The constant focus on battling mundane villains, training arcs and tournament arcs took away from the otherwise lovable group of protagonists.
Not as good as I remember from my childhood, but a fun and engaging series overall that’s easy to read and can lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.

Yusuke wins the match, but in a final display of rigged corruption, it's deemed a tie instead, but, thankfully, Kazuma wakes up and is able to fight! His fight was definitely a highlight of the tournament, thanks to the appearance of Yukina cheering him on. They finally get to rest and recharge, thank goodness! Also, Genkai finally reveals herself to Yusuke, and gives him a final test, (and her power) in order to ultimately face Toguro. At the same time, the semifinals begin, and it's three against five, Hiei easily winning his, and Kurama close to, until his former form gets unleashed!!
I'm definitely enjoying this arc, and glad to be remembering different parts here and there, like Yusuke's egg hatching into this cute lil monster friend!

The Dark Tournament keeps rolling on to the semifinals. This volume we get plenty of Hiei, which is welcome after he was sidelined for the last volume or two. We also get an update on the underworld beast egg with Botan and Master Koenma; I had pretty much forgot about that plot thread at this point, so it was nice to see that revisited. I wish we got more time with Keiko, Botan, and the rest of the ladies; it's so refreshing to see them and the guys versus all the demons in the tournament.
It appears Yusuke is having a bit of a Dagobah moment during this volume. That frees up the action for the other team members, though, while not entirely removing Yusuke (like Hiei was).
The series continues to maintain its even level of quality, both in art and story.
YuYu Hakusho is one of the greats. It’s definitely of its time. For me the mentorship of Genkai and Yusuke has always been extreme tough love at its finest. The stuff that forges an unbreakable bond. I’ve gone through some spiritual practices myself and it does reflect some of the same principles. The series continually impresses me with nods to spiritual, occult, morality and the unknown. The fights are signature, and while nearly every demon participating has the look of a B-rated movie villain they still stand out in big ways.
Yusuke does the main character thing where he needs to pull a powerup out of his ass to be tough enough to face the actual big bad, but in the meantime... everyone else gets to fight! Hiei, Kurama, Kuwabara, their matches are all so different it's cool. I like seeing the three of them bicker amongst themselves, it's always nice when the larger cast of a shonen actually get to DO THINGS. One of the best parts of tournament arcs, honestly, seeing everyone get to pull out cool tricks. And, well, the Dark Tournament is the standard for all tournament arcs, so this makes sense.
this has got to be one of my favorite volumes. its so good, we got to see so much of hiei and kurama and their abilities, and im never not going to appreciate an apportunity to see them. also, genkai, god i love that woman. this vol. leaves us with such a good set up, the upcoming fight with the toguro brothers, the suspense of what happened to yusuke and the reveal of the true power of kurama. im so freaking excited.

Fuck! What a cliffhanger to end on! I mean, I know what happens already, but still!
I want to say the scene of Toguro flicking that dude's brains apart is "iconic," but maybe it's just the case for my own memory...? Same for Kuromomotarou cutting off his fingers. And the sequential pages of Dog-Kuromomotarou biting Hiei, then Hiei's Darkness Flame Sword cutting Kuromomotarou.
Still fun, though not as engaging as the last volume. Yusuke's starting his final test and the fight with Fractured Fairytales started, so that was fun. I did like seeing Yusuke and Keiko have a sweet moment together, though it was literally a moment. I don't have much else to say, just an enjoyable volume.
This volume is really exciting! We get another look at the awesome power of Hiei and we get to see a couple of new tricks from Kurama as well. The is also a pretty emotionally impactful volume as we learn more about Genkai and the power that they will bestow on Yusuke. There is a lot of character development in this volume and there really aren't any wasted pages.
So refreshing to come back to this series (after a long break) and still know what in the world is going on. Unlike Hunter x Hunter, where with the latest volume I was completely lost! Give me Yusuke any day!
Ah, Kuwabara. "This is it, I'm dead, I'm toast" turns to "git OUTTA my view" when a pretty girl shows up, allowing Kuwabara to punt his opponent into next year.
