Yu Yu Hakusho Volume 10

The dark Tournaments heats up as the final two team are made here in this volume.

A lot of training, brutal fights, and a shocking ending make this volume worthwhile. To see Yusuke come so far after going through so much is really fantastic. On top of that you get an emotional payoff when a character passes here simply because of the build up. Togashi is a master at slowburn payoffs giving you both emotional and badass moments all in one.

Next up is the final part of the dark tournament saga, which I assume will be in the next two volumes. This was still great, a easy 4.5 out of 5.

Genkai epitomizes strength and fearlessness, serving as a remarkable example to all. It was a privilege to know such a formidable woman.

Rest in Peace, Genkai.

I've watched the anime so many times but I've never read the full manga. Reading about the Dark Tournament is still as good as watching. Always fun to find the differences between them too.

One of my big reading goals for the new year is to read a bunch of my childhood favorite manga for the first time in nearly 20 years to relive the nostalgia and see how they hold up. First up is Yu Yu Hakusho!

Yusuke Urameshi is a hardass teen delinquent that loves skipping classes, smoking cigarettes, disrespecting authority and throwing hands with the toughest gangs in the halls and on the streets. He’s hated by almost everyone around him and he knows it. When he’s killed after pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, he’s surprised to find from the afterlife that he has more people that love him than he ever realized after attending his own funeral as a ghost.

Against all odds, Yusuke makes a deal with the angel of death to turn his deviant behavior around in exchange for giving him another chance at life with his friends. He must prove himself that he’s worthy of being brought back to life by becoming a spirit detective, saving the lost souls of sorrowful ghosts one good deed at a time.

The spirit world is more complex than Yusuke realizes, however. He’s soon wrapped up in a world of cutthroat demons, evil spirits and other dark beings that have a bone to pick with him. While performing good deeds to save the living and the dead, Yusuke also finds the chance to put his supernaturally-enhanced martial arts abilities to use by fighting powerful paranormal foes from underworld societies.

---

Yu Yu Hakusho is extremely nostalgic and has a lot of appealing factors. The hilarious banter between Yusuke and his band of badass bros is the forefront of the series. Kuwabara is a lovable goofball who tries to mimic the tough guy antics of Yusuke while constantly revealing himself to be a huge softy with a heart bigger than his fake ego. Hiei is the classic edgy antihero that softens up and becomes gradually more sympathetic as you learn more about his tough upbringing. Kurama is pure class and elegance, his wits and tongue are as sharp as his looks. Then there’s the sassy, beautiful and hilarious Botan who acts as the grim reaper and leading lady. Quite the memorable crew.

Another great thing about the series that may seem odd to point out is the beautifully drawn 80’s inspired fashion. The characters change outfits almost every chapter and they always look clean and refined. It’s hard not to appreciate the style throughout the series. This coupled with the witty banter, crazy martial art demon fights, self-aware humor and fast paced story arcs with lots of action make it a pretty fun series.

While the series is simple and enjoyable, the story, world and villains aren’t that well made in my opinion. Everything seems made up on the fly with little logic or build up. The story and battle arcs get very repetitive and the second half of the series feels like a massive rehashing of everything we’ve already seen. The final arc and ending were unsatisfying and anticlimactic in my opinion. It introduced a bunch of new concepts out of nowhere and then did absolutely nothing with them. Then the series ends with a big cliffhanger with no real resolution.

Overall, I actually enjoyed the calm and relaxed chapters and subplots where it focuses on the main cast of characters bonding and hanging out with each other over the main plot, the battle arcs and the forgettable second half. I think the first arc of the story where it’s just Yusuke and Botan solving mysteries and saving the lives of lost souls was actually the best part of the entire series. The constant focus on battling mundane villains, training arcs and tournament arcs took away from the otherwise lovable group of protagonists.

Not as good as I remember from my childhood, but a fun and engaging series overall that’s easy to read and can lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.

This was a sad volume which I won't go into because of spoilers, but one thing I want to briefly discuss is Toguro's motivations. Toguro is honestly one of my favorite anime villains because he's a multifaceted individual with a solid, reasonable motivation for his actions. He doesn't want to fight time and possibly lose his strength to old age, so he decided to wish for an ageless, powerful body that is nearly unstoppable. It's such a simple motivation, but very human considering that aging is something that people often struggle with accepting, and seeing how this fear has warped Toguro is painful yet understandable. Despite adopting a demonic mindset and lust for power, Toguro is still human in his fears and desires.

But that's enough about that, I'm finally approaching the final battle of the tournament! This is a long arc, but I'm still pumped and ready to see it to the end!

While a large part of this volume is dedicated to fights against Shishiwakamaru and Suzuki, it's really in what we see of Team Toguro that makes this so great. Namely, the graphic gore we get from Karasu, Bui, and Toguro-ani's fights, but also an emotional element in the reunion between Toguro Otouto and Genkai. Toguro and Genkai fought alongside one another in a previous Ankoku Bujutsukai, fifty years ago, but they grew apart on vastly distinct paths, with Genkai mastering Reikohadou with the idea of passing it onto a pupil, and Toguro forgoing reiki in favor of raw strength, becoming a youkai in the process.

It's weird to think we're already halfway done with the whole series....

I knew this was coming, but I still wasn’t prepared for it. Genkai was always so cool and powerful, and I desperately want to cosplay as her one day. It’s still rare to see older women in manga with this much strength and knowledge, as well as completely accepting of her age, all of which is in direct contrast with toguro (younger), who is so terrified of aging and dying that he sold his soul to preserve himself.

Actually, I almost forgot to mention that this volume was all Genkai, being such a brilliant fighter, even after giving Yusuke (most, or almost all of) her power. Ugh, I love her.

The Dark Tournament has been so much fun. Every team has a gimmick, there are so many fun and creative battles, and despite the constantly raising stakes there's always a lot of humour. But now we get to see Genkai finally kick some ass, and... well... Toguro. Team Toguro shows up and reminds you why they're the bad guys you're here to fight. And for all the creative fights, Toguro is just STRONG. SO STRONG. BEEFY. He and his team are just so immediately threatening it's like the entire tone of the manga shifts the minute any of them enter the page.

I once went to summer camp with a girl who was so obsessed with Hiei that she was convinced she would one day get his third eye tattood to her forehead. Granted, we were 10. Needless to say, I decided to become obsessed with Kurama, because friends cannot compete over who is the greatest fan of an idol and maintain a harmonic friendship. So says 10 year old logic.

But I did have good reason to obsess over Kurama. He's kickass.

Wow! This volume was BAD ASS!
I have always been so in love with this series. It is my favorite anime of all time. I am so so thrilled to finally be reading the manga for it. This is my fav volume so far. The writing is beyond phenomenal in my opinion. The artwork STUNNING. I want everyone to read this! I would love to get some stunning collectors editions someday, I don't even care how much they cost😅

Fairy tales don’t come true and sometimes it can be a nightmare.
Watching Genkai fight is one thing, but reading makes it even more enjoyable. Genkai is the spark of humanity in this story filled with demons and kings of the underworld.
The dark tournament will soon be over and the best of the fights are yet to come.

This volume is a masterpiece as it balances action with heartfelt emotion, giving you the ole 1-2-punch as it were. If you attached to these characters at all, this volume will break your heart. It's one thing to have seen the anime, but reading this definitely broke me for a little while. It's really fantastic.

It's been interesting watching this develop. Togashi really likes doing that thing where the antagonist kills someone in a shockingly brutal way to establish how evil they are. The series has gotten a lot more violent and less funny as it's gone on. Still good, but if it keeps going in this direction I won't be able to put the rest in my middle school classroom.

Good, pretty emotional volume I'd say.

I'm not very pleased with how they're handling this thing between Younger Toguro and Genkai. It seems rushed, almost as if it was thought of late. It's not really fleshed out to well exactly why they feel the need to fight and kill each other, aside from pride I guess. It's not super well explained why they've waited all this time either, although I feel like I have a pretty good guess.

They do a great job of making him feel intimidating, and making Genkai feel like a true unparalleled master. This volume could be heavier on action, and it could do with some clarity on what exactly is going on with Kurama.

All-in-all, decent. This manga could sure use a bit more exposition dumping though, that's for sure.

Turnamen akhirnya mencapai final. Namun satu tokoh penting di sisi Yusuke "dimatikan" oleh Togashi sensei pada jilid ini. Perkembangan cerita utk arc dark tournament hingga saat ini berjalan dengan cukup baik.

If kurama wasn’t already winning all of the ladies over…He is now.

Man, a lot transpires in this volume. There are two rounds of matches, some humor and it ties up neatly to lead into the final debut. HELL YEAH LETS GO!
