A bunch of random stories, each followed by the author's long reflections on 'lessons learned'. I'm not sure if it was the actual stories or perhaps the way the author wrote about them that really irritated me... I really did not like this book. The two stories that irked me most were #10 and #11.
In #10, Amer Ibn Zubair is said to have had a habit of praying at the graveyard 'because he loved his brothers and sisters in Islam'. However, he also hated to waste time. When his neighbors invited him for food, he would say "I don’t enjoy spending time eating my brother’s dead flesh by backbiting about him or our brothers in Islam. There is no better place to sit and spend time other than the cemetery because it reminds you of where you will be one day and no better books to spend your time reading than the Quran and Islamic books." so... idk, I guess he loved spending time praying for his dead brothers and sisters but didn't feel any need to spend quality time with any living brothers and sisters..? and way to make assumptions that they would spend their time gossiping? What an insulting reply to a dinner invitation?
In #11, a slave at the end of the story is considered virtuous for knocking on her master's door several times at night to pray and read Quran.. even after being told to leave the master alone. In the morning, the master wakes up and sees the girl praying to God saying, "Oh God, I know you love me, thus, you shall forgive me." So the master asks, “What makes you so sure God loves you?” She replies, “What could it be then, if not love; that I am chosen to pray in the middle of the night, while YOU are left asleep? .............................. super humble, ne?
