About the author

Richard Baxter (1615-1691) was an English Puritan church leader, poet, hymn-writer, theologian, and controversialist. Dean Stanley called him "the chief of English Protestant Schoolmen". After some false starts, he made his reputation by his ministry at Kidderminster, and at around the same time began a long and prolific career as theological writer. After the Restoration he refused preferment, while retaining a non-separatist presbyterian approach, and became one of the most influential leaders of the nonconformists, spending time in prison.

When I first purchased this massive volume, I used to sit for hours just reading the super small print containing the many answers Baxter gave to situations. While I can't obviously endorse all of his responses, I was thoroughly amazed at the types of issues he addressed, and their direct application to even our modern times. I still, to this day use this volume as a reference point on almost any question. Great stuff!

Thought this book is very well suited primarily for:

* Growth in personal piety.

* As a good reference for counciling both believers and non-believers alike.

* Very good at going after the conscience.

* Some of it is not applicable due to the context of the time period for which it was written.

This is a great go to book if you have a question about what to do regarding personal struggles with sins or the sins of others. It is a huge book filled with great thoughtful advise on a wide range of topics. Even though it was written hundreds of years ago, it is very practical and applicable.
