Jens Schon etells the history of the GDR. He puts the spotlight on everyday life, "normal" people and the smallest villages. Party officials, the Stasi and opposition to the SED dictatorship are also focal points of Schone's attention. From the GDR's foundation, to the People's Uprising in 1953, right through to the building of the Berlin Wall, the Peaceful Revolution, and German Reunification.
I liked the topic of this book much more than I liked the treatment of it. It really seemed like Jens was out to explain how literally every part of East German society led to the inevitable collapse of the country and the bias is palatable. I think I would have preferred just to hear about the history of the country and not so much about the constant admonishment for all of its policies.
