When PI Charity Keone, a former model-turned-martial arts expert, saves the life of her new client, shipping magnate Daniel Williams, who thinks she is just another pretty face, she finds herself mixing business with pleasure when she succumbs to his passionate advances. Original.
Katherine Garbera is a USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 novels, which have been translated into over two dozen languages and sold millions of copies worldwide. She is the mother of two incredibly creative and snarky grown children. Katherine enjoys drinking champagne, reading, walking and traveling with her husband. She lives in Kent, UK, where she is working on her next novel.
The first two or three pages were promising but got bogged down by excessive introspection on the heroine's part. I generally like getting into the character's head but in Charity's case, it interfered with what was happening between her and Daniel so that Bare Facts became a rather uneven read for me.
The sense of real danger that surrounded Daniel never quite communicated itself to me, and I think it was a mistake for the author to allow her heroines to be tagged with the Charlie's Angels label. It detracted from the seriousness of the situation and prevented me from taking anything seriously. Hard to when Charity is described as supermodel beautiful with big breasts and the other two "angels" are equally sexy, if different in personality and skills. Sam, their boss, communicates with them through a one-way video conference. Naturally, he can see them but they can't see him. The emphasis seemed to be on building this image of the girls and the agency they work for such that it overshadowed the plot and the rest of the characters.
I never quite connected with the protagonists which resulted in my skipping the sex scenes to get to the action/suspense. A romantic suspense featuring the Yakuza ought to be a little grittier, IMO, but Bare Facts isn't very different from the superficial TV series that Charity, Justine and Ann (I think that's the 3rd girl's name) is likened to. In the end, this book just didn't pull me in and I couldn't help but feel that the old '70s TV series was a lot more entertaining.
Charity Keone works for a security firm, Liberty Investigations. The firm is hired by Daniel Williams, a wealthy CEO of an importing company.
Williams is being blackmailed by a man named Sekijima and recently had his home broken into and a member of his staff hospitalized.
Two other girls work for Liberty Investigations. They get their orders from their boss by speaker phone and jokingly refer to themselves as "Charlie's Angels."
Charity is a martial arts expert and a marksmanship shooter. As she is working to keep Daniel safe, they find themselves attracted to one another and have difficulty separating the business from the emotional side.
Danies had grown up on the streets and had been a member of a gang. In those days, he actually did work for Sekijima. Now, he doesn't know how much of his past he can tell Charity or what her reaction would be if she knew the things he had done.
There isn't much suspense in the story and I found the characters to be stereotypical and had no depth. As much as I wanted to like the characters, I found that I just wasn't drawn into the story and didn't care what happened to the characters.
Charity, Justine and Anna work for Liberty Investigations, a pseudo-Charlie's Angels type organization. All the women are gorgeous, and Sam (not Charlie) is the voice calling the shots over the speaker phone.
When Charity is given the assignment of guarding Daniel Williams, the sparks really fly. It is lust at first sight, which Charity fights because Daniel's life is in danger and she won't be as diligent if they are involved. The danger is real (Japanese gang trying to kill Daniel) and the sex is intense. A great start to this series.
This was my first book by this author. I enjoyed it but it felt a little too Charlie's Angels for me, right down to all the references. Don't get me wrong I liked the action and romance of the plot. I think for me though, the constant hiding of details from the main character and that action at the end was just too much for me. I felt like it went from dragging out the story with all the evading of information from the character to wham bam everything happens at once at the end.
Three badass women make up a team at Liberty Investigations. Their boss, Sam, has just taken a new job protecting an imperiled man. The man in question, though, is determined to use himself as bait and is not telling the women the whole story. When one of the team members, Charity, saves his booty he is forced to see her as more than just a pretty face and delectable body. To stay alive they must trust each other and work together.
