Good compilation of pictures, sketches and locations of various animals. Most are pretty animals, some are predators or animals humans should be cautious about coming across. There's paw/hoof/claw print sketches to compare to signs you may have come across or are wanting to confirm. It's listed where to look for the prints, as in and what kind of substrate you'll find them in/on.
I don't recall ever having been able to identify a track but, I have always thought it would be so fun to be able to track an animal so I decided to read Basic Illustrated animal tracks.
The first part of the book talks about things like when to track or where to track. And also talks about how to track, then goes into some tracking terms. Most of the book profiles different animals.
Listing their scientific and common names, size, habitat and habit. It was certainly fun to look at the pictures of the animals and learn a little about what they eat and how they live. I even learned about a few animals I had never heard of before like Javelina.
Then after the animal profiles it talks about other marks that animals makes besides their foot prints. Then they talk about taking photographs, drawings and plaster casts of foot prints.
At the end of the book they list some books and web sites. I had never thought that there were tracking schools that I could go to. Now I know.
After reading Basic Illustrated Animal tracks I know a little more about what is involved in tracking animals. I hope to learn more about animal tracking. It seems so exciting.
This was a quick, informative read. The book is packed with information about the various animals--not just their tracks, but their habits, habitats, ranges, and notes about similar or easily-confused tracks from other species.
