I enjoyed this story for the cute gay rom com it promised to be. I didn’t know until the end that the book was written after the screenplay and movie were made, but it makes sense because it definitely had all the elements of a movie. The jokes and banter were funny, the main and supporting characters were likable, and the flow and pacing were perfect and kept me engaged. The only criticism that I have is that the end was too abrupt and I wanted to see more couple moments with Myles and Brody. The prose wasn’t the richest or most beautiful, but not every piece of writing needs to be a literary epic of genius proportions. Sometimes you just want a feel good rom com featuring the best trope of all time: best friends to lovers.

This was a very funny, enjoyable, sexy and fast-paced read. Two young men make a promise to each other that if they don't meet "the one" and settle down with him in the next ten years, they'll give up the search for love and instead commit to each other for life thereafter...

I actually had this same agreement with my friend John...I am now married to Curt. No offense to John, but I think this is a very good thing! This is not a new concept...it's been done before. But, when it's done right (like in this book), it's easy to see why this concept has such staying power.

Recommended for a clever, fun and light M/M read.

I'll have to admit. I cheated. I saw the movie first and then read this book. And disclaimer: I met the author at GRL where I bought the DVD and only because I liked eCupid (a previous movie). But I also want to assure we are not friends in real life. I bought the Ten Year Plan because I just loved eCupid.

Getting back to the book: I liked the characters' interactions in the movie, particularly Brody and Myles. The bromance between the cops was funny, and a blast to watch on DVD. The book and movie are based on real people the author knows so it's not a m/m conversion of My Best Friend's Wedding, which is the biggest comparison I can make.

The story of Brody and Myles is a seductively sweet story of two friends falling in love with each other over the years but being afraid of really saying it out loud to each other until push comes to shove. You can read between the lines that fear probably kept them from being honest with each other.

If you're looking for a funny, but sweet book about love, then you will love this!

3.5 * rounded up

I had the pleasure of reading this novel after first seeing the movie. It was an extremely faithful adaptation, mainly because the author was also the script writer and director of the film. I see a lot of what I want myself to be in Myles. This book had quite a few editing errors which took me out of the book a bit. However, it was a quick read and a very enjoyable "don't realize what you have in front of you" story. I do wish the story delved a little more into the past and into the supporting cast a bit more, to me, that is the point of a novelization, to expand on the material already known from the film.

The recipes in the back were a nice and welcome touch, can't wait to try one or two of them.

I love the movie. It was fun to learn more about Brody’s back story. However, the novelization is a bit too much explanation and not enough of the characters showing us the additional content. It’s a bit like reading Wikipedia telling you about a person’s early life, interesting information but the presentation isn’t as compelling. Otherwise, it’s like reading the screenplay and if you’ve seen the movie you probably don’t need that. Good for the additional information to add to enjoyment of the movie but probably not worth it as a standalone novel.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

This book has been made into a motion picture. When I first got this book I thought to myself, “oh, it’s going to be a male/male version of My Best Friend’s Wedding.” Thankfully, it wasn’t! Instead, what we have are two best friends who are like day and night in their views on dating. One is all romance, where the other is a love ‘em and leave ‘em as quickly as possible type of guy. After consoling Myles after yet another date left tire tracks trying to get away, Brody agrees to make sure that Myles doesn’t die alone by agreeing that the two of them will be together forever if neither of them finds love before they turn 35.

Ten years later, with Myles no closer to finding love, Brody realizes that he needs to put the search into high gear. Signing his buddy up for a Grindr account, Brody hopes that maybe Myles will live a little and stop worrying about finding “love.” Without ruining the story for you all, let’s just say that Brody’s plan backfires as he finds himself falling for his best friend after all these years – right at the same time that Myles may have found “the one.”

This was a very fun, cute, albeit a bit sappy queer romance. I loved it! Cute premise: slutty guy and a hopeless romantic are bestirs and make a pact that if they're both single in 10 years, they will become a couple. The next 10 years were spent with the slut being a slut, and the romantic going through failed relationship after failed relationship, meanwhile the two of them continue to be the best of friends and continue to hide this growing passion for one another. It was fun witty, and in the end yes the romantic in me shed a tear.
