Miss Misery #5

Misery Happens

Rate this book

Sometimes everything goes to hell. Sometimes hell comes to you.

Miss Misery, Book 5

Jessica Moore has one hell of a to-do list. 1) Bring the fury who attacked her friends to justice. 2) Obtain the last item required to relock a magical prison. 3) Save the world by actually relocking the damn thing before its demonic prisoners escape.

But with a red sky enveloping the earth, humans and nonhumans alike are panicking, and the crazy fringe is getting violent. Anti-magers—humans who want to destroy all things magical—are waging war on Jess and her friends.

Then there’s still the problem of the key. It’s the last item Jess and her allies are searching for, but legend claims it’s trapped within the prison itself. Someone will have to go in there and face down the demons to find it.

Naturally, guess whose strange power is the only thing that might succeed? Even with Lucen at her side and a Gryphon army at her back, this might be too much for a misery junkie to handle.

Blood and tears will be shed, sacrifices will be made, and more secrets will be revealed. So kiss your loved ones and hold your weapons tight. No one ever claimed the apocalypse would be fun.

So the hard part about binging a series is that you have to stop and remember each book. So this might be a review of the series as a whole.

As an author, it's really rare that I take note of another author's "craft" or whatever. I hate that word. But let me tell you what, this series is an example of the right way to keep an overarching plot rolling for five books while still resolving each book in a neat little bow (#4 was a bit of a cliffy, but to be expected at that point).

Nothing about this series was rushed. Nothing about this series was haphazardly thrown about. Everything was intentional, as as an intentional person, I just LOVED that.

I appreciated the slow growth of this character. She was friends with Lucen for ten years, but it took him quite a while in the first book to break down those walls. . Through it all, she never lost her spark or her spunk or her fight. In fact, toward the end of this book, I was becoming very, very scared for her. I said on Twitter that I've never been more emotionally invested in a book series before, and that's absolutely the truth.

This is truly a well-done series and I'm so glad that I stumbled upon it. If you're a fan of urban fantasy, slow-to-unravel mysteries, really hot sex scenes (I mean, with satyrs, how can you not?), and a sassy-brassy heroine, please do yourself a favor and pick up this series!

Best book of the series so far! I really appreciate how the author kept the over arching series plot plates spinning in a way that felt natural and unforced, while still giving us a complete book with each episode. I admit I wasn’t sure about the series to begin with but there’s such great character development for the MC that I’ll be rereading with pleasure.

And thus endeth the story of our favourite Misery-junk...
When I started Tracey Martin's Miss Misery series I had a few misgivings. Despite really liking the world-building, the type of magic and magical creatures I just didn't see the love- interest being... well, interesting. And the immense self- hatred of the main character seemed to be taking it too far. Added to that my fear of a RV Harem angle and it might seem like a miracle I read the entire series.

But it isn't. A miracle. Boy, was I wrong to think this would be "meh"!
Martin has great writing skills and a wonderful imagination. Thanks to both she made me root for a mc that initially annoyed me, gave me the warm & fuzzies for the love -story and... surprised me time and time again. With the number of books, especially in the fantasy genre, I manage to read yearly that is really something.

With every new title I was drawn more and more into the story, and in the finale of Miss Misery, Misery Happens, everything we've been working towards is coming to a close, with no questions left unanswered (well, maybe just the one*). And while this storyline has definitely ended, Jessica herself could very well be the centre of new books to come if both author and publisher were interested. I AM!

But first, let's focus on book 5, the ending. When we left Jessica and friends lost against the furies due to the inner conflicts within the alliance she worked so hard for, she'd been kidnapped to open the pit of demons, had to fight for her life several times (cue CIaudius & leak! ), lost a friend, with another in a curse-coma and she and her fellow " anomaly - Satyrs " were studying to figure out how to close the pit again ...

Much to my delight a few adversaries in the previous books get their just deserts in this final installment. If you disliked, or hated, Fury Dom Raj, the so- called Leak in the Brotherhood and Claudius just as much as I do, know that they will all have to see Jessica arise the victor in one form or the other. And while I dislike admitting it, I have gotten to grudgingly respect Tom, maybe even like him a bit. His role will be one of value when the stuff really hits the fan...

With the sky turning red allover the world pred-hate & antimagic-sentiment is on the rise. The public panics, seeks a scapegoat and an easy one is found. As if Jessica didn't have enough on her mind due to her 'Saviour Warrior'-role, violence and terrorist attacks become a daily occurrence with Jess once again being made a specific target (*can the author please provide a short story on how the instigator for that is punished, please! It is the only question I'm left with).
In between all that, Jessica and her teammates seem to finally have figured out what Olef meant with his message on the wall. The Pit full of demonic pred-ancestors needs to be closed again and that key will be inside. Guess who's booked for a trip to hell?

With this vague idea of how to rescue the world, Jessica trains to protect herself against the demons in the only way she knows how: grow her powers and accept herself once and for all: both will play an important role when she needs to close the pit again. And both cause a lot of tension in the book (again: Claudius).

We're on 2/3-ish of the book when the final battle commences. The remaining alliance of World- and Boston Gryphons, Goblins, Satyrs, Jessica, and Mitch is out of time. Despite a severe lack of prep work, the group heads to the Furies' castle in France, not knowing what meets them. No matter what, it's time to save the world. But is Jessica truly ready? Can she fulfil the prophecy? Or is it Mitch who will come through for everyone?

With so much of their training happening mentally in the book, it'll come as no surprise that the fight against any of the powerful roaming demons in and outside of the pit is both mentally and physically. It's an interesting take on the importance of overcoming fear and the mental blocks we often build ourselves.

All fighting scenes, whether they take place in someone's mind or on the literal battleground, had me on the edge of my seat. Things didn't seem to go well, and at one point I even wondered if I'd misunderstood and a sixth book would be the finale. But when our heroes seem at a (literal) dead end the Biggest Bad makes a small mistake. One that Jessica catches and immediately takes advantage of. I can only say: when will bad guys learn?

Much of the mental battles, Jessica's in this case, also lead us back to previous books, particularly the self-hatred of the first. Looking back, I now think that particular character writing was actually necessary, even though I didn't feel it at the time ( When you can read the entire series without breaks it'll make the most sense ). Not only can we see our main character's growth, but fear, self-esteem issues... they become a core point in the storyline and a part of the magic of those trying to enslave humankind. How's that for a "food for thought" book message ;).

It's hard to describe the last Miss Misery installment without giving too much away, and I despise reviews with spoilers.
So, what I will say is this: nowhere did the book lose momentum. The worldbuilding, that of the demonpit included, remained consistent, and Jessica's struggle and behaviour, aswell as that of other characters, is both believable and "in character". It makes the end so much more satisfying if an author isn't suddenly adding new magic to the mix to "knit the story" to its conclusion.
At the end of the book, when you think all surprises and storylines have been written and concluded, we get one more lovely cherry on the cake. And it's a good one, especially in my eyes.

I'm happy I let my initial interest in the story & world- building sway me to pick up the second book, despite any misgivings I had. The Miss Misery series turned out to be great Urban Fantasy. Even though I enjoy the typical werewolves, vampires, or sorcerers & witch -types, seeing something original is much more delightful. The other typical "True Love in a Week-story" is missing aswell. There's magic in this world, and there's love. But both were different from most things I've read. And written well.

Having read each title in one go as a result of the good writing and interesting new takes on fantasy & romance, I can only say: If you like Urban Fantasy, but are ready for new magic characters, on the tip of your chair "Okay, one more chapter" excitement and tension, plus a love story that isn't truly finished until the very end, then I recommend this series wholeheartedly!

Happy birthday to the last book in my Miss Misery series! I can't believe this thing has come to an end, and I have to say goodbye to Jess, Lucen, and all my characters. Thank you to everyone who took the time to review these books, and to the readers - I hope you enjoyed them!

Wow, what a weird and insane trip this whole series has been. While I'm sad to see it end, I'm happy that all the characters ended up in a good spot. After all the mayhem and general badness, it's reassuring then a book can still pull out a happy ending.

Jess is still going through a lot when we join her in this book. She's mostly hated by the world, supported by a small group of folks, but still fighting off the big bad(s) and hoping her sort-of boyfriend wakes up from his coma. Even that is a lot to deal with, but couple that with training to save the world and trying to bring everyone along with you and she's got a pretty impossible task on her hands.

Lucen is definitely an even bigger superhero in this book. He manages to support Jess while not murdering his superiors as they put her through the wringer in training. Are there some bad times? Sure - but they work through it and come out stronger in the end. I can't even begin to summarize the ending and outcome here, and won't, so just suffice it to say that we see resolution in the best way possible. You even end up feeling a little bad for the bad/questionable characters.

Our heroine just needs one more piece to the puzzle to lock up the demons. Too bad that piece is hidden within the very place she has to lock up. Any volunteers for an impossible mission? Anyone?

This is book five of the series. It works pretty well as a standalone, but does build on the previous books. So starting at the beginning should provide a more complete experience.

This is an urban fantasy story, but it is rather unique in my experience. The mix of races in the story makes it quite different on its own, but our heroine's curse takes it to an entirely different level. The story is well written, but not always easy to read. There are a lot of different factions and personalities here and it occasionally gets difficult to keep it all straight. The flip side of that is that there is plenty of action, mystery and intrigue to keep things going. Overall, I really enjoyed this last chapter of the series and look forward to seeing what our author comes up with next.

Highly recommended.

I can’t believe that this is the last book in the series. I have quite enjoyed the ride in getting here, and this last book was quite entertaining. Poor Jessica still has to deal with the fallout with dealing the Pit, and they need to finish getting the vessels to close it. However, Jess learns more about herself in the process with secrets coming to light and events spiraling out of control. I would have liked a little bit more closer about a couple of things, but I am quite satisfied with this ending. Now I’m excited to see what this author has in store next. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

This is a very good conclusion to the series, and it should be read in order. The MCs are defined, and the storyline has action, adventure, and drama. It is entertaining. I liked this book.

Jessica is now facing the final chapter of her story – an ominous red sky signals the opening of the Demon prison – the first demons, the progenitors of the Furies and a terrifying force that could literally destroy the world.

Prophecy points to one small group of people who can close the prison and save the world – and chief among them is Jess. She has a lot to learn in very little time as well as a powerful magical artefact to find.

And just when she was getting her life together and finally deciding what she wanted from life: just as her life comes under unprecedented scrutiny – and hostility.

I generally really liked this book and the conclusion of Jess’s story – which came to an excellent conclusion. There are only two issues that pulled it back

Firstly, around the middle of the book it all kind of wobbles; the book kind of pauses. I can see why it wobbles and it makes sense for it to wobble but that doesn’t necessarily make the wobble. Basically there’s a tense moment in the middle of the book where everything is on hold. Everyone is researching, everyone is waiting for the bad guys to make the next move, everyone is tense, everyone is fearful, everyone is worrying about what will happen next, everyone is worrying about whether they’re ready or how their lives will change. Everyone is in holding as preparations happen. But everyone – specifically Jess – isn’t actually doing a whole lot. Even though I completely understand why they’re not doing an awful lot, it still feels frustrating – it feels like we’re gearing up to a major ending without actually heading for it, more like we’re waiting for a major ending to land on us. In some ways it’s the same issue I had with the last book – we have lots of preparation for stuff to happen without it actually doing so.

While I’m not a fan of what it does with the plot, I do like how it allows for a lot more focus on Jess, especially on her last outing. Here she can look at the remaining issues she has with being a satyr (including addressing her brief wish to turn Lucen human) as well as coming to terms with what she wants against her constant push to want what she thinks she should want, what is deemed acceptable to want. Her secrets exposed to the world, Jess is put in a position to look at her whole life and decide what she wants out of it – while at the same time also (with Lucen) recognising that it’s ok to have got as much wrong as she did. It was ok not to be perfect, it was ok to need to grow. Her relationships, her positions between the Gryphons and the Preds, her relations with friends and family are all examined and put in their place as Jess makes major decisions about herself and her place around them. No matter what ever else ends in this book, her personal story has reached a massively satisfactory conclusion

I am not happy about the woo-woo that drops that suddenly makes Lucen capable of monogamy. It seems to fly in the face of all this acceptance and still give her an out so she can have that conventional happily ever after even after she’d already accepted she doesn’t need it.

This part of the book also examines several deep issues with hugely potential storylines that were excellent on the face of it and, perhaps annoyingly, would have also been excellent to develop… which of course we didn’t have time to. Like the Mages throw in some interesting curve balls this book, and there’s a huge debate between magical hatred and prejudice that would have been fun to examine as well as Jess’s own position with the press, people, Gryphons and her own family. What was done was excellent – excellent enough that I think they would have been interesting to follow up.

The second thing that I wasn’t a huge fan of was the ending… it felt rather anticlimactic. Perhaps it’s because of the people who died in it, the cost that was paid or the nature of the battle with the enemies, but it didn’t feel… epic. Powerful and strong – but epic? The big bads just didn’t really sell me as big bad, especially considering several books of utterly huge and amazing build up going on.

Misery Happens, Tracey Martin

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Romance, Sci-fi and Fantasy.

I’ve been following this series since book one, and loving it but somehow dammit – I missed book four, and didn’t realise till I saw this final part. Dilemma – do I buy book four before reading this or plug straight in? Trouble is I’ve got into that situation once more with so many books and so little time...and hate to keep review books waiting for too long. A 36 hour day would suit me :-)

So, it was straight in to the final read, picking up on what happened in the last book as I went along. I know this world and its inmates pretty well now from first three so its wasn’t hard to keep up, and I could guess much of what happened in France from the text.

Poor Jess, Lucen’s Little Siren, she’s in danger Again. For her recently it seems it ever stops. What so hard to take is the Anti Magic/preds faction among the humans who don’t seem to realise she’s risking her life for them. Of course some of the Preds aren’t much better to her....but Tom, Lucen, Devon, Mitch, her friend Steph; they’re a close group around her now who do all they can to help and support her. Turns out she’s the key ingredient in some centuries old prophecy and all she has to do is dip down into the Pit – yes, the one full of powerful demons, find the Key that no-one knows what it looks like or where it is, and lock their prison..somehow, as no-one is quite sure how she does it. Easy Eh? Just another day on the life of Jess.
I love Jess, she’s grown and matured so much from the girl we met at the start. She’s had a tough life, and recent events haven’t helped. Lucen, he’s a hero in my eyes, saw her true worth years ago when everyone seemed to discard her and her own view was jaded and very low. He helped her then as best he can, and has been at her back ( in all ways!!) ever since. He’s such a real Gentleman, and so perfect for her, encourages her to find her true strength while encouraging her all the way, protecting her when its needed but never smothering her. Now they’ve finally come to something of an accord can they get a HEA or is it all going to end in the Pit?
Its been a great series, full of surprises, full of unexpected types and mixes, allies where they aren’t expected, betrayals too from sources once trusted. I’ve really enjoyed the journey, and its a series to go in the keepers file for rereading back to back ( and maybe finding time for book four too so I can fill the gap)

Stars: Five, a climatic ending but fitting for the series.

Preds are supernatural races that feed on negative emotions. Jessica is a human who has the ability to do the same thing. She's been roped into working for the Griffins, the magical human police force. Her mission this time? Only saving the world.

A strong end to a good series. This was one of my favorites! (Though three is still the best!)

All of my favorite characters were back, if only for a little bit. I missed Steph in the last book, so I was glad she was in it more! Dezzi helps train Jess and Mitch, so we got more of her too!

There was more levity than I expected. (It is the end of the world after all!) And there was some good banter with Lucian. I liked how he kept changing her ring tone to end if the world songs!

The pace was good. It only seemed a little slow leading up to the end, but that might've been my anxiousness to get on with the mission.

We've been teased about these super Pred demons for a few books and they didn't disappoint! I was trying to figure out which demon went to which species, but beyond the Fury they didn't seems to correlate.

My Complaints:

Lucian was too perfect! He was close in the other books, but he still had his issues. In this book he's always understanding, always giving Jessica everything she needs. It was a bit unrealistic.

The ending was also a bit too perfect too. I love my happily ever afters, but problems magically disappeared!

My only other complaint was that Devon was barely in it! (He's my favorite!) We got a hint about his past, but it felt like a deleted scene, because it was never mentioned again. Maybe a hint for a sequel? Please! I love these characters, but the world is amazing too, so I'd settle for another story in this world!

In the fifth and last book of the series, Jessica Moore, has become so much more than human, but more than satyr. She is the best of both, and is ready to save the world, humans and non humans alike.

I have loved Jess and Lucen since book one, and grew to love Devon as well, so much so, that his mostly absent self is greatly missed in this book. As Jess comes to terms with her nature, she is also realizing who and what she is willing to fight for. Even if it means she has to walk through Demon Hell to get it. If she doesn’t, everything will be lost.

As the last book in the series, Jess has the ending she deserves, but a lot happens in order for her to get there. This series was a lot of fun, and non stop action as she finds out what happened in her past, and who she is meant to be….oh and how she is now the only one who can save the world.

Love Jess’s snarkiness, even in the face of danger. Several laugh out loud moments while she runs from one end of the globe to the other facing her biggest fears along the way. But she won’t give up, and she won’t give in until everyone she loves is safe.

If you haven’t read the series, start with book one. Wicked Misery. You won’t regret it.

Part of me is sad to see it all over, but I honestly don't think it could have ended any better than what Martin has given to us here.
I look forward to many rereads of this series.
