François Schuiten was born in Brussels in 1956, as the son of two architects. He studied at the Saint-Luc Institute where he met Claude Renard. Together, they created the comics 'Aux Médianes de Cymbiola' and 'Le Rail', as well as three volumes of '9ème Rêve'. François also collaborated with his brother Luc on the series 'Terres Creuses' which was published in the legendary Pilote magazine. His final breakthrough into the mainstream of comics came with his transfer to the more adult Métal Hurlant magazine. In 1980, together with Benoît Peeters, he created the series 'Cités Obscures', in which his love of architecture is magnificently visible.

One of the conceits of the Cités Obscures is that they are aware of our world, but we are not aware of theirs.

There are, however, some notable exceptions, and this book introduces us to one for the first time. Isidore Louis – who bears a striking physical resemblance to Jorge Luis Borges – works at the ‘Institut Central des Archives’ of a European city (probably Brussels). He is given the task of collating and investigating scattered references to this ‘obscure world’ throughout history, and this volume represents the report he submits to his superiors.

It is absolutely gorgeous to look at. Each double page consists of one full-page illustration with facing comments from the sceptical but increasingly curious Louis. He does not know the context of any of the pictures – indeed in some cases he knows even less than us, if we've read the first two books – and so the images all retain an air of great mystery.

Nevertheless, he pieces together what he can. There are images here from cities we have already encountered, such as Xhystos, as well as new places like Mylos and Brüsel (soon to become very important). Traces of the Network from volume 2 are legion, which causes Louis considerable confusion.

Schuiten's artwork is again quite remarkable, each scene somehow conveying an internally consistent world, each location having its own traditions, history and (naturally) architecture.

Eventually Louis begins to consider the possibility that the Obscure Continent is not a hoax after all, but rather ‘a world which, though it has more than a few points in common with our own, seems to have developed in a more systematic and, dare I say it, a more harmonious way’.

His bosses take a predictably dim view of his conclusions. Perhaps there are those who are actively working to suppress this kind of information? But by this stage, Louis is already coming to the conclusion that it might be possible, in certain situations, to cross from one world to the other…

This is a book to dream over. It gives me the same feeling as an adult that poring over Alan Lee's illustrations for The Lord of the Rings gave me as a child, and that is a rare thing.

if you like this review, i now have we bite: www.michaelkamakana.com

050115: beautiful images, simple plot, meditative effect- who needs a story when you are looking at these invented, fantastic, vaguely european, cities from dreams? it is like a graphic version of Borges, places, worlds, that should exist more than somewhere in thought, so far this is my favourite of these obscure cities...

This volume of Les cités obscures is not inasmuch a comic, but rather a mixed media: it contains the findings of an archivist coupled with big drawings of various places within le monde obscure, sole of which we've already encountered, like Xhystos and Urbicande, and others we've yet to meet, like Brüsel and Mylos.

I love this different architectural style linked with each city. I also love how Schuiten and Peeters play with the possibility of this world as a real thing. In this way, you can really tell it dates back to the eighties, as it has a definite new age feel to it.

Impressionou-me o traço e a história.

I didn't think this was compelling or captivating at all. Nice panels though, as always with this duo.
