Jesse's Lady

Rate this book
Charleston,, 1792. As America gloried in new-found freedom, inner turmoil rose. As Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr waged their private battles, as colonists braved a savage new wilderness and as a golden land became shadowed by slavery, a spirited beauty lived and loved with a passion few possessed.

Brianna Devereaux. Half French, half Irish, she returned from her schooling abroad as feisty and independent as ever, and found her homeland facing new struggles. Wild beyond taming, wise beyond her years, she challenged the issues of those turbulent times with a wit and fortitude few could equal. Only one man could match her indomitable spirit with his own. And together they dared to follow their hearts' desire - forged by the dreams and ambitions of a glorious heritage - to discover a love as vibrant and alive as their bold new land.

Edited on 1/19/24 for clarity.

A lot of people throw shade at this book because there aren't as many spicy scenes as some of Sattler's other books, but I absolutely love it. It was the first historical romance I ever read. (Aged 8, but no one cared about reading material suitability in the early 90s.) Jessie, despite his MANY flaws, is a hero I keep with me. I often compare other heroes to him. Briana is quick-witted and doesn't bend to his whim, so it's the perfect measurement of tension and spice.

This was my fifteenth time reading this book, and it was just as good as I remember. Sattler is an OG historical romance fiction writer. I love her style. Please note that there are several trigger warnings associated with this book. If you're a trauma survivor, please check online to see if this is something you'd be comfortable reading.

It was an ok read. I enjoyed the story but the tremendous amount of history and politics I could have done without in a romance novel. I don't read romance for a history lesson. I did start to skim over all the political stuff after a few chapters.
