My Immortals #7

My Demon Warlord

Rate this book
A Demon Warlord Bound by Dark Magic to the Powerful Witch He’s Desired for Years.

Kynan Aijan’s centuries-long enslavement to a mage left him borderline insane and bound to Maddy Winters, a witch he intended to kill in horrible ways. Though he’s sworn the bonds they share will never be completed, their very existence feeds his desire for her even as he accepts that Winters will never forgive him.

For Maddy Winters, the fight against evil magic users always takes top priority. But her bonds to Kynan give her intimate access to his thoughts and experiences, and she can’t always ignore their chemistry. Her insistence that she has no feelings for him is a deception she can’t afford to give up. As Kynan and Maddy join forces to stop a rebellious and murderous witch, the dark magic that binds them locks them into forbidden passions and magic that could destroy them both. Will their fight for what’s right lead to a fight for each other?

My Demon Warlord is the seventh installment in the My Immortals series of dark paranormal romance novels. If you like magical supernatural tales, explosive chemistry, and irresistible passion, then you'll love Carolyn Jewel’s latest breathtaking romance.

****Light Spoilers ahead! ****

O.M.G! Maddy & Kynan's book!

I just need to start with - thar will be spoilers ahead! Read at your own risk.

I've been feigning for this book for months. I mean, I just found out about the My Immortals series late last year and I've already managed to glom my way through all of them. So I've been impatiently waiting for this book.

I don't know what to say. The tension and the past between Maddy and Kynan is a hallmark of their association and I was sure that there was going to be a lot of groveling...but there was not! O_O WTF? Why not??

Throughout my read of My Demon Warlord, something was bothering me. Niggling at me in the back of my mind. Maddy was coming across as a cold-hearted bitch. Kynan came to her multiple times, almost begging for more but Maddy would refuse. Maddy doesn't believe in love. But WHY? The text never gives a reason for Maddy not to believe in love so her constant refusal of Kynan felt mule-headed and a little petty...deepening her characterization as a cold-hearted bitch.

That's when it [what was bothering me] hit me! The text doesn't truly delve into Kynan and Maddy's past. Everyone knows Kynan hurt Maddy and that they are bound in some way (because of what Kynan did) ...but most of the characters behaved as if it were water under the bridge. The text does not give the full details: what exactly did Kynan do to Maddy? Kynan bound them together but by what kind of bonds? The text didn't say - and I'm thinking that the text dances around this point in order to make Kynan redeemable. Let's not forget: Kynan attempted to torture and kill Maddy.

Let's say that again: Kynan attempted to torture and kill Maddy.

But everyone (females, at least) seems to forget this and give Maddy serious shade cause of Kynan. Emily gives Maddy shit in My Dangerous Pleasure :

"He's [Kynan] not...stable," Maddy said.
Harsh silently applauded the way Emily stared down Maddy.
"I trust him," Emily said. "Completely. It's not my problem of you don't."
-Emily, My Dangerous Pleasure, pg 60

Bitch. Did he attempt to torture and kill you? NO? Oh, well then. My suggestion is to drink a big cup of Shut the Fuck Up.

And then Addison had the fucking nerve to do the same in My Demon Warlord.

"I know Kynan, though. He has serious feelings about you, and I don't want to see him suffer because you don't care about him. No mistake, Maddy, when Nikodemus brought me along, I told him outright I'd happily put you down if you managed to take him mageheld and Durian didn't get to you first." Her expression hardened. "Unlike them, I totally believed you'd do something like that. I still believe it."
- Addison, location 3297

Addison calls Maddy a cold-hearted bitch to her face and lays into her as if Maddy is what's wrong with Kynan. With all that shit Addison was talking, I bet she wouldn't have given Bejar half the fucking chance if he were alive. Fucking hypocrite. So Addison went from being a favorite character to being a total bitch that I'd have loved to bitch slap.

"Don't do anything different because I don't think you're worth him taking a chance on. He is, and you need to let him find that someone else."
-Addison, location 3323

WTF is this??? Where the FUCK did that attitude come from?!?!?!?!?!??!? Kynan tried to torture and KILL Maddy. I think she has the right to her damn reservations! What the fuck, Addison?? Everyone knows that Kynan was a little insane at the time BUT a crazy person can make you just as dead as a sane person. And Kynan tried to torture and kill Maddy.

In a way, it felt as if the majority of the text was against Maddy having major fucking reservations regarding Kynan. When Maddy's oath was broken in the attack against her and Kynan, Nikodemus throws shade at Maddy and immediately feels she's at fault. Maddy has been nothing but loyal but everyone was willing to give her shit.

Except Xia. Damn, I loved Xia just a little more for that.

Xia looked at her and snarled. "It's me, Maddy. Not some stupid fuck who doesn't know better. I was there when he pulled memories of you out of Alexandrine's head. I was fucking there. I know what he did."

Thank goodness for grumpy ass Xia! FINALLY somebody had Maddy's back. Because seriously: fuck Emily and double fuck Addison. I loved Addison in her book but in this one?? If I were Maddy, Addison would have had to kill me because I would have jumped on her ass. FUCK ADDISON.

"When I heard you and Maddy were off-grid, I knew you were responsible. I was ready to come after you. But this? You sick bastard. Fuck you for doing this to her. Fuck. You."
-Xia, location 3750

By the end of the book, I felt a lot of mystery remained: Who is Maddy?? She is clearly well-trained and powerful. She wasn't one of the discarded street witches, so what is Maddy's past?

I don't think I got all of what I was expecting in My Demon Warlord but I still enjoyed myself. My Demon Warlord also pushed the series arc farther and has some great addition to the war plotline. My biggest issue(s) are that there was a lot of mystery that wasn't cleared up and I feel that Kynan should have done a lot of groveling and he seems to have managed to avoid that.

Very, very, good; although I'll have to admit to being confused at the demon stuff going on more than once. Chapters 20-23 in particular. This was not one of the lighter reads in the series. The wordbuilding was solid; and Jewel takes the reader deeper into her demon world, and what it really means to be a demon in the fantastic world she has created.

The story has an overall plotline about mages who are running a breeding program to create mageheld demons from birth, and the efforts to stop it. The underlying story, and the meat of the tale, is when matters between the demon Kynan and the witch Maddy finally come to a head. Their issues and ‘relationship’ or lack thereof, has been simmering in the background throughout this series. It was great to finally get their story, and a resolution to their convoluted relationship.

A big thank you to Carolyn Jewel from this fan for not giving up on this series and self-pubbing to keep it going. This series is a fantastic read...

RachelW didn't get some magic in this 7th novel. On my part I'm not sure about the relationship's...

I got all the reason why K was a fuckup and the reasons behind his reticence. I have no idea why Maddy is this way. I don't need to delve into psycology-like blubbering, but I had no firm take on her.

This of course doesn't imply I didn't enjoy fully the book. *grin*

3.5 stars - My Demon Warlord (My Immortals Book 7) gives us the long awaited pairing between Kynan and Maddie. They have always had a steamy frenemies thing going on and while the series has always had a touch of kink and this one took that up a notch - Maddie was into pain and I wasn't as thrilled by that - but the action and back plot were good.

This is the second time I've read this book and I can honestly say that I enjoyed it a lot more the second time around. I think it is because Maddy is growing on me and I have a better understanding of her character now. Maybe I had to read a bunch more books in-between the first time and this time to get a better understanding of her.
I also love Kynan, which is a given since he's been my favorite after Iskandar for a while now. I enjoyed the insight to how he thinks and seeing how he has grown from his first introduction in My Wicked Enemy. The relationship between him and Maddy has really evolved since My Forbidden Desires for sure.
I also enjoyed the new magic theories/powers/spells introduced in this book.
I can’t wait for the next installment she gives us in this world.

This series is one of those series that I read and find myself re-reading it at least 1 time a year since my dangerous pleasure was published. I just love it, despite some issues I read concerning continuity and niggling little details like how many of this or that. The hugely imaginative world inhabiting this series trumps any issues a reader might have ... though the one about who killed Magellan is a pretty big one for me. Most likely because I was going nuts thinking I misread something so I had to go find it to make sure I was indeed not going nuts.
I was expecting a lot from this book, which is probably why I didn’t like it as much as I thought I should, I had built it up too high.
I’ve been looking forward to Kynan’s book (even though I had a good idea Maddy would be in it) since I first read My Wicked Enemy/My Forbidden Desire, Kynan is one of my favorites after Iskander and Nikodemus. I’ve never really liked Maddy and now that I have a better idea of why she had acted the way she did and I understand more about what was going on I get it. My opinion of her went up some but not a lot as she seemed to be pretty freaking whiney in her head at times. I would’ve liked to learn a little bit more about how she grew up, even a rough sketch of her family or something would have been nice.
Usually Jewel writes some pretty passionate love/intimate scenes, as in scenes where it doesn’t have to be sexual, just a closeness of mind that shows another way that demons differ from humans. they feel closer by just touching or drinking blood ... her sex scenes are usually so ... very riveting and we were finally going to get a peek @ kynan, which we only got a little peek at in the last book, but they were lack luster in comparison to what I’ve read in this series before. She is so very good at ramping up the tension of the characters and putting a massive chokehold on the reader’s attention before delivering the final blow. It just kinda felt like someone else finished it up for her.
I know that there could be more to the scenes; hell everything up to them actually fitting their pieces together was massively intense. When they got down to the tab B going into Slot A is where it kind of went ... and ... werrrrrrr’re done.
Wait? That was it, they’re done?
Sheesh, I sound like a total perv with that little bit of analysis.
As to what happened regarding the street witches ... seriously mage kind’s view on the kin really irritates the hell out of me. I sometimes wish death scenes for them were a bit bloodier or violent at times. One thing I was wondering though, Paisley said that Leonidas wasn’t a “screamer” so how did he get to be as old as he is? Or even Maddy, though a bit more of a clue about her age would be nice.
The thing that I didn’t get was in the breeding operation they sent the girls away. Why? In the first book there were a female warlord and a female kin (who was guarding outside near the end of the book), and Iskander’s blood twin, Fen, was female. So, do they manifest differently? Did they just think they weren’t valuable or something? Tao’s ability was a nice surprise, but it easily being taught to the others, after so long? Why didn’t they learn it before? Also, how did some of them fly back to Tiburon? I only remember reading about one demon having wings and I believe they were more vestigial than anything. Guess I need to do another re-read!

Rounding up to 4 stars. There was a lot of build up for this story and I really got into a lot of it such as the intensity of their relationship but other things pulled me out of it. Too frequently I had a hard time following what was being referenced or how people were situated in the space because it seemed like they would be in one place and then suddenly be somewhere else. The big battles seemed easily resolved without much drama. Realistic perhaps but left it not feeling like an epic finale.

I didn't feel like I understood who Maddy was. And maybe it's me but I wasn't clear on what happened between Kynan and Maddy. How were those bonds made? I read all the books back to back and even went back searching them all with keywords "Maddy" and sometimes "winter" and couldn't find scenes to explain the big blow up. If someone knows where that scene is I'd love to know. (and something to explain their attachment to pain. That's so hard to relate to so an explanation would have helped)

Jewel has a lot of talent and I really enjoyed her unique paranormal world and how she didn't stick tight to many of the mainstream PNR rules. I'd check out other paranormal stories by her for sure.

4.5 stars... But dammit I just realized I skipped 2 books... No wondered I was a little bit confused on some of these characters... Ugh I hate doing that.
BUT Kyann and Maddy's story stands well enough on its own with crazy intense passion and action. Hopefully there are more coming.

3 sorry stars

I read this as my first book in the Immortal series and I was completely befuddled for the first half of the book. Kynan and Maddy were like in a tug-o-war, he pulls she pulls and nothing happens (between them I mean). It's nothing like any romance I have read of Jewel. And the world they are in, the phrases they used - I didn't get it for the first half which is a long time into the plot. I normally get the world building (and language) within first 10-20%, this one went on too long. Perhaps it may be useful for the author to include the glossary at the start of the book and consider expanding it to include certain phrases used in this world e.g. "sworn" which seems to be used as a noun.

The protagonists come to a head about their relationship about halfway in the book, which is when I started to get into it more and understanding the dynamics better. But I read in another review there was clearly WAY MORE history between these 2 than is described in the book (spoiler: Kynan tried to torture and kill Maddy before!). You don't get any hint of this in the story - all you see is Maddy resisting the heck out of "belonging" to Kynan. I think if I had known this background before I finished, this would be downgraded to 2stars - for Kynan in no way made it up to her in this story.

The sex scene between Maddy, Vahid and Kynan while hot confused me some. I don't really remember scenes like this in the other books (i read it happened in book 1 - don't remember why though). Yes i know the Kin are very touchy feely. But sex? Does that mean he messes around with his other sworn while she is not around when they have needs? Just because its his duty because they are his sworn? Do the demons in this world have open relationships with the woman they love? I know she was okay with what happened.... but confused...

Would have been a 5 star read if that one scene didn't leave me with unanswered questions. It has been awhile maybe I'm forgetting something important.
Love this world - its one of my favorites. I'll be looking forward the next one.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. When I picked it up I didn't realise it was a part of a whole world and I was walking bang smack into the middle of a series. However in saying that it was so easy to follow, i missed the occasional reference here and there but overall it was like its very own standalone. Witches and Demons fighting together to bring about peace, and the sexual and emotional tension along the way creates for some interesting scenarios. I loved and hated some of the circumstances they found themselves in and the way they handled it. I think mostly though I disliked how the book just stopped. I wanted there to be more for Maddy and Kynans story, I wanted to see more into their ending.

I'm a big fan of this series and the world that Jewel created, so this much anticipated book was a guaranteed 3 star minimum for me. However, with that being said, I think that this series has the potential to be SO much better than it is. I know that Jewel has this amazing world and story in her mind that she sees vividly. But in transferring it to paper, sometimes it reads like she thinks we can see the same picture she has, which we can't...transitions are chopping, conversations and scenes start and end suddenly, background information is missing, etc. This series is AMAZING, the world building, the story, the characters. It just needs a little polish to bring it together.

I liked this book but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the first book in this series. Kynan Aijan was enslaved for a century now that he is free he has a score to settle, but it left him border-line insane and also bound to Maddy Winters a witch who he is planning on killing to completely get his freedom. What happens when they join forces to fight against an evil witch, will these two ever put aside their distrust enough to realize they belong together? The love scenes got too edgy for my tastes (pain is a turn off for me) but otherwise I liked this book a lot. I like this series and the world she is building here. Maddy’s complete resistance to admitting her feelings for Kynan was exhausting. Not a fan of that particular trope.

I gave up on this one. It just didn't have the same feel as the other books in this series, which I have recommended to several people. This one didn't work for me at all and I didn't feel like forcing myself to finish it just for the sake of saying I read it.

Great book.

This was worth the wait right back in the middle of the action. Great story about Kynan and Maddy finally getting together. Kynan has found some peace with his past. Can't wait for a new story in the future.
