This is another book in the "Walking in the Rain" series, but from a different perspective. David Metcalf is trying to survive after the lights went out and the aircraft circling the Dallas and Forth Worth metro area fell to earth. With nothing to stop the firestorm that ensues, the city and neighboring suburbs burn. The conflagration is only one part of the problem; people are running out of water and food and willing to kill their fellow man to get it. David needs to find someplace safe where he can protect his family, but he discovers that there are things at play behind the scenes to keep the misery going. Follow David as he navigates the dangers in this new land where anyone could be a potential threat.
More great writing in this 'Walking In The Rain series'. This fifth book was written by the brother of William Allen and is seamless in its continuation of the story! The fourth book ends introducing a character long thought lost and this fifth book picks up with that character to explain what amazing situations and terrifying obstacles he has had to overcome.
Well written with perfect descriptions and mannerisms of how a younger sort (younger than Luke) would struggle to survive. It was a very enjoyable story introducing so many new characters in a very real way. The Allen brothers have created an outstanding series! Now I'll just have to hope that the sixth book will be out soon....and I have another great author to add to my list!
Could barely put it down ! Tense. The main character, a teacher, leads his group East from the Dallas / Fort Worth area through bad areas, figuring it out as they go, gaining some friends and allies, dealing with people gone bad. I've read the first four books in this series, and this goes very well with them.
Great addition to the series, ties more of the characters together and fleshed out the new reality after the Apocalypse. Well done by a contributing author.
Bit slow starting but picked up speed and very good character development!
At times I almost felt there was too much bang, bang, shoot 'em up and the it would seem to drag for a bit... However, as I said earlier, the pacing seemed to smooth out as the story progressed and the character/personality building was outstanding! The children were fully fleshed out "little people" with all the peculiarities of the same and there was never any doubt how much David loved and cared about "his" children ... Despite his effectiveness the were admirable soldiers when called upon and the love was fully reciprocated. In the end, I enjoyed this much more than I expected to early on in the book... And, I will be looking for not only the "girl/dog story" we were given a "peek" at but also a continuation of the story of David, his children, and everything family! Great job for a first timer!
Wow, M.C., What a great addition to Wills story, Walking In The Rain! I am really loving your characters that are to be added to the ranch, especially David and his kids. I have given five stars because that is how much I have enjoyed reading this series, so much so, that each time I end one, I have to get the next one. I would definitely recommend this series to everyone.
Much more violence than the first three books in the series
I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first three. A totally different character and there was violence on every page pretty much. The first three books had Luke who’s story I liked. I didn’t like the violence in the first books but without Luke all the violence was too much for me. Hopefully the next book will bring the storyline and all the characters back together again or I might not finish it.
MC manages to flawlessly continue the world invented by Will. To be able to pick up the nuances of this world gone wrong and give us an accurate side story is amazing. At no point does this feel like a hanger on story but instead an incredible story to continue and let us become engulfed in this world again.
I really enjoyed this book and that is an understatement. So very well done. The flow of the chronology is satisfying in that the author will drop back in the time line of the story and go into more detail of how things led up to the “present” action. Wonderful to be hearing more in the story of Walking In The Rain.
Believe it or not, I actually enjoyed this book more than the rest of the series so far. Mr. Metcalf was a teacher in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex when the pulse hit. Some of his students managed to make it to his home and so began his journey to the Messner Ranch. This is their story.
Great story line. It was hard to stop reading once I started. Had some good information on survival needs and very real situations to consider if the lights ever did go out. For a first time book, it was great. Looking forward to reading more of your books.
This should have been a different series then the first three books. This book is awful that. The "hero" should never derive pleasure from torturing people. That is what books ,4,5,6 main focus is. The "heroes" giddy fun in torturing people. Bottom feeder.
David Metcalf is barely surviving after an EMP sent everything into chaos. It’s a kill or be killed world now with few that can be trusted. He is heading towards promised sanctuary in northeast Texas with a ragtag group of children aged ten and up. Along the way he discovers that there is something very wrong with the government agencies who are supposed to provide aid.
M.C. Allen’s first novel in the Walking in the Rain series, Firestorm, is actually book number five in the series started by Will Allen. It is the best book in the group so far. The story is told from a different perspective than the first four and can be read as a stand-alone novel. We met David at the end of book four and this is his story.
I love this book. It is well written and fast-paced. The story is believable and the characters are real. It is serious yet has some light-hearted moments also. David always has to go pee at the worst time. The story melds with the end of book four and I hope there will be a sequel. If I could give this book six stars I would.
This series of books is terrible. The heros are all mary sues, and the world they have created is an NRA members wet dream, where only small town southerners survive, and anyone from the north or a city is an evil raping canibal. This is hateful, death wish inspired, murder fantasy, fan fiction caliber detritus disguised as a post apocalypse novel. If you love Trump, Guns, tinfoil hat conspiracies, and Militia hero worship you will love this book. If you hate the north, hate people who look different from you (oh god its an ethnic with tattoos! he must be a murdering, cannibal, rapist here for our daughters virtue), hate the federal government, or even just centralized authority, and think the civil war was a war of northern aggression you will love this book.
Rating this book with 5 stars should get you put on a watch list.
Great novel from the brother of the author of waking in the rain series
Liked it as good or better than his brother's main series. The only typo I saw was in the authors notes at the end "Conspiracy theorists" shouldn't be plural in this case. But, great read. Did it in a day. Need some more of Mr Metcalf!
I thought it was a great addition to Luke's story. It had a few errors that were overlooked when proofread but not enough to be annoying. I look forward to the next story.
What an awesome read with an incredible array of characters. I look forward to reading David's story. You won't be disappointed with this one. Pulls you in quickly and keeps you there till the very end.
I finished all the "Walking in the Rain" books and read this add on by a different author. I enjoyed the entire series and couldn't put them down before finishing them all. I'm not sure how realistic some of the enemies are/were but OK... I loved the books!
I am in love with David and his kids!!! Omg hurry up with the next book the suspense is going to kill me waiting to see how things go at the ranch. Are David and Tammy going to get together??? Thank you Craig for a wonderful book.
The writer has all the traits of the brother and does a phenomenal job at adding background and context to an already engaging story. Can't wait for more work from the brothers on a follow up of both stories coming together. Congratulations!!!
The concept is good, and it is well written/edited. I enjoyed every bit and am looking forward to your new series. (Can't seem to read any other sort of writing at this time!) Thanks so much for an exciting read.
I rather liked this book. It was nice to have a first person character that was not a teenager. Like a lot of the protagonists in the genre, the main character started to border on a superman type. I would definitely read the sequel to this story line.
