Whoa! So much great information, so little time....
The author really makes a 3D action film of writing a non-fiction informational encyclopedia including map. To keep you on tHe road toward putting your first book on the digital shelf and attract new writers to keep The 90 Minute Book Outline with them through their own journeys...
So many books a title that doesn’t represent what they’re about. Also in many books the focus is not narrow. This is an extremely specific focus is highly school and I will absolutely use it
The author talks about cutting the fat to your outline and yet his did not take his own advice. This book has many redundant points that make it longer than it.should be.
Short book, but packed with good information. I'm more into fiction and had just finished reading a book on Outlining Fiction, but I decided to read this one as well and I can take ideas from both.
I really enjoyed this new book by author R.T. Tolentino. Having written several books myself, over the years I have read a lot of "how-to" books for writing. This is the first book I have come across that described the writing process for an outline in such vivid and structured detail. I really enjoyed the author's "friendly and confident" tone as well, and it was much better than some of the writing books out there that read like boring textbooks, especially when they are focused on the mechanics of the craft.
The book "The 90-Minute Book Outline" is really well-structured so that you can get your outline done FAST; it begins small with writing down a few key ideas, and then shows readers/writers how to craft the outline by figuring out the niche that you're going to write in. Then do a brain dump and spend just as much time as needed don researching. As R.T. says, many new writers tend to overdo it with research because they think they have to be an authority first.
Write what you know. You can then outline everything in just one sitting if you take care of the essentials first. I really liked the "Reverse Engineering Idea". This strategy alone can save tons of time by knowing what you are going to write long before you write it. The book also has lots of examples that are easy to follow so you can whip through and has your outline done in the 90 minutes as specified by the title.
Another solid point is the emphasis on defining your target audience: when you reverse engineer your book first and focus on your audience that you are appealing to, it is easy to get the outline finished. The section on mind mapping is excellent and also includes some helpful diagrams and links to useful apps. According to the author you can also use your blog and repurpose the content. There is also some tools such as Scrivener and of course a plain whiteboard works just fine for mind mapping.
The Part 3 is extremely useful and if anything it was worth buying the book just for this. It includes 7 ways to be more creative in defining your outline. It runs through defining the target audience once more for more reinforcement and gets into narrowing down your topic so that you don't waste time in the writing.
It gives you another brief overlay of the whole process and takes writers from where they are to where they want to be. Finally, this book is really worth the time and money investment. I would have gladly paid 10.00 for it but got it for just .99 cents. There is a great system here that every author should follow so they can writ faster and better. This especially works for me because I don’t have much time in the day, so having a system to follow like this one is just what was needed
For the longest time, I've needed a book, website, program, etc. that contained at least one example of a non-fiction book outlined from beginning to end. Most books on writing non-fiction talk about outlining and give you perhaps a few links to recommended software ... and that's all. What Red Tolentino has done is talk about outlining, he supplies you wth the links to great software, AND he gives you three example outlines start-to-finish in good detail. He also includes the full outline for the book itself so you can see clearly how a full outline translates to a full book.
... Genius or, in the least, exactly what the new or less experienced writer needs. At the beginning of the year, I resolved to write one book a week for the entire year to build a comfortable passive income. An example outline was the last piece I needed to make that happen - and now I have four!
Could you write an even better book on this topic? Yes, I'm certain of it, but thanks go to Red who's shown us exactly where to start to that end. Cheers!
One of the best outlining blueprint books out there. I waffled between a 4 and 5 star. I settled on 4 because I would really like to see some more material on researching niches but more so a basic downloadable checklist on the blueprint process. Lots of repeat info to make, it seemed, the book thicker that was unnecessary. Even so, I would strongly recommend this book on the topic.
A no nonsense guide to creating a workable outline for your book
The author takes you from idea to implementation via a realistic step by step process for creating a non fiction book that will help provide value to your reader and make productive use of your time
Not insightful nor is this recommended for newbies. This explains little and creates more questions than answers. This also would have benefitted from a small editorial pass as there were some grammar issues throughout.
This book is well written and gives the necessary steps to outline your book. It takes the writer through process from coming up with the topic to writing the first draft.
