In the first book, Through Many Fires, nuclear terrorism strikes the nation’s capital and six other American cities. In the second book, A Time to Endure, society continues to unravel, and civil war threatens the divided and economically-crippled land.
Now a new and even more lethal problem emerges. A swift and deadly flu epidemic sweeps out of overcrowded FEMA camps and strikes the nation with horrific results. Caden Westmore struggles to keep his family and community safe, while others use the plague to advance their own military and political agendas. Caden must succeed, but how can he, when both the epidemic and chaos attack his hometown and family?
Kyle Pratt is the award-winning and bestselling author of post-apocalyptic, science fiction and speculative fiction novels, novellas and short stories.
His most recent post-apocalyptic thriller is the Amazon bestseller, Through the Storm. His first venture in the post-apocalyptic genre was with the similarly named Through Many Fires novel. This first book in the Strengthen What Remains series came out in paperback, Kindle, and on Audible in August 2013. Within two weeks the novel appeared on the Kindle Science Fiction Post-Apocalyptic list, reaching #10, and reached #1 on the list on December 2, 2014. The second book in the series, A Time to Endure, reached the number one position on the Amazon Kindle war fiction genre list just over a month after release and then again in January of 2016. At the same time Braving the Storms reached the number eight spot.
While serving on ships in the United States Navy, Kyle wrote short stories to pass the time. After retiring from the service he continued to hone his craft and in July of 2012 released his debut novel, Titan Encounter, a science fiction space adventure. His second book, Final Duty was released in January of 2013. His most recent science fiction novel is Recall the Earth, the second book of the Guardian Knights of Terra series.
Today, Kyle and his wife Lorraine live on a small family farm in Western Washington State. When he isn't writing he repairs gates and fences, tends bees and chickens and blogs anything that comes to his mind.
Braving The Storms is an excellent book and in my opinion, the best in the three-book Strengthen What Remains series. The writing is crisp and the plot is superb. As usual with Kyle Pratt's books, the characters are authentic and true to life. Granted, the book ends on a slightly unsatisfying note and leaves a few loose ends. But that really doesn't take away from the story.
As for the storyline, its a goodie. It's one thing to survive nuclear attacks, economic upheaval, and societal collapse. But now Caden Westmore and crew have to deal with a lethal pandemic that's dropping huge chunks of the population. Talk about your worst nightmare! The title doesn't come close to capturing the drama, intrigue, and action contained in this story. Definitely a page-turner.
Each of the books in the series gets better and better and the author gets better through out the series. I actually think the first book was the worst one. It was slow and repetitive at times but I wanted to see what happened next in the story. The next two books were very quick and exciting to read! It was very hard to put the book down!
It seems like the story could even continue and I would definitely like like to continue the series if more books come out.
This is the third book in the Strengthen What Remains series. This series just keeps getting better with each book. Each book brings to life of new plot line while still carrying forward the main underlying story.
In this third book Zack, one of the teenagers introduced in book two, becomes one of the main characters as he is forced to grow up to fast in the conflicts brought on by the new world.
On top of the existing struggles, a deadly flu is ravaging the country at a furious pace.
The battle for leadership of country has been queued up nicely and I'm eager to jump into book four soon.
I enjoyed this book 3 a little more than the first two, mostly because some of the characters are starting to grow on me. I was unhappy at the loss of one of the very few of the strong female characters; in fact she was really the only one. The fact there are very few good female characters is bothersome; most are just keeping the home going. I had figured out the nature of the secret mission, but it was exciting nonetheless. Since this didn't really end with resolution, I assume there will be more books in the series.
This is the third in the series and is just as action filled and suspenseful as the first two. The book really makes you think about what would happen if our whole infrastructure were to collapse and how we would deal with it. There are two books that have been released since this one but they are filling in some storylines, not continuing it. I hope that Kyle Pratt is working on a book to continue the story!
As if nuclear destruction and a possible civil war due to corrupt politicians wasn't enough here comes a plague. I know it sounds like alot but knowing the scenario it is a likely continuation. Kyle Pratt does a magnificent job of painting a picture of the devestated nation and the surviors just trying to get by. The added political intrigue is just a topping on the cake, A must read.
Each book in the series developed the characters and moved the story to new tension. The third book was the best and left me wanting more. There are two novellas to fill in missing parts about two of the characters. I will definitely read more of Kyle Pratt's books.
Six U.S. cities nuked by terrorists. How they managed to pull this off I'm not sure. It would have to be suitcase nukes (and six of them to boot! how they managed to get hold of six nukes?), which would create a lot of nuclear fallout. If that were not bad enough the threat of an influenza pandemic is materializing out of the overcrowded FEMA camps. As these things do, little by little people are getting sick and dying. Trying to control the outbreak is nigh impossible. Our boy Caden and his troops are exposed, but luckily Caden is not infected; not so for some of his company. The other half of the book revolves around Zach; his ups and downs, ever increasing experiences, and growing pains. Add MS13 to our communities long list of problems and another hurdle for Zach. So much going on, one issue after another. As we close this volume we find two things; one, the battle is won but the war continues and two, there is much left unresolved for the next book.
This series just keep getting better. It continues to explore the challenges, losses and threats to the main characters of the story. A pandemic is the latest threat and is handled in a very realistic way. Character development in the midst of these problems is very believable and you really care what happens to them. Highly recommended. I can't wait for the next book.
Definitely some good reading. I was sad to reach the final page. Was hoping for some fireworks between Maria and Becky, wish the story had included their meeting each other. One heck of a good read. Good work Kyle Pratt!!!!
