Christmas Lovebirds is the first in a series about the Harts, an Irish-American family of firefighting men and the women they are determined to protect. Melissa Hart has always been the over-protected younger sister, tagging along with her brother but never allowed to try anything risky. She's been in love with her brother Connor's friend Rob for as long as she can remember. Ten years ago, Connor and Rob ended their friendship after Rob slept with Connor's girlfriend, and the entire Hart clan has never forgiven Rob for this betrayal.
When Melissa ends up in Rob's ER with broken fingers and a possible concussion, Rob is shocked to see the young girl has grown up to be a beautiful woman. He's flooded with childhood memories and is eager to ask her out, but he knows that he can't act on his feelings with her entire family against him. But he's given a second chance when he accidentally ends up with Melissa's lovebird, and he finally has the chance to explain what happened all those years ago.
This was a really cute Christmas story! The lovebirds were adorable, they were the best part of an already great story. They each had their own distinct personalities, and shone each time they appeared. Rob was a lovable hero, he wasn't overbearing or domineering. He was determined to let Melissa make her own choices, and her own mistakes, and to stop the constant coddling. Melissa was inexperienced with relationships and acted immaturely at times, but she had a sweet personality that made me like her immediately. Near the end of the book we meet the entire Hart clan at once, and there were some hints to the match ups in the sequels, but there was no cliffhanger. It was a clean romance.
This was my first audiobook by Jennifer Groberg, and it was a great performance. There were a lot of bird sounds in the story, and she performed them well. They never grated on the ear or became annoying. She has a pleasant sounding young voice, and it was a good match for Melissa. I received a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the rest of the series and more by Rachelle Ayala.
